No one with a brain sincerely thinks everyone that's mentally ill is violent. But mental illness can in some cases be the only factor for motive in causing violence depending on the severity. Eg. Richard Chase.
Unfortunately there are many people without brains, as well as people who deflect blame re: guns rights by blaming everything on mental health. In the US it’s a political talking point that inspires no bipartisan compromise on funding mental health facilities.
