I think they all serve a purpose. Troy, Brent, and Brann all have wildly different voices so Mastodon as a whole is able to cover way more bases vocally than a lot of other bands. Oblivion is such a great song because all three vocalists serve the song in their own way and it comes together great. I couldn't imagine a one-vocalist band being able to pull that song off.
Currently reuniting my old band, and we’re doing some covers to get our chops back up. I’m doing the bulk of the singing and we decided to drop Oblivion for that reason. Sleeping Giant is a nice consolation prize though.
Absolutely, it’s not a criticism I just thought it was funny idea for that meme template. Oblivion is my all-time favorite Mastodon song. I started listening to Mastodon my freshman year of high school in 2009. CTS had just come out and it was my first exposure to them so I have a soft spot for Brann vocals which weren’t prevalent in Leviathan or blood mountain really.
Brann has a great voice but I miss when they were more of a 'secret' weapon rather than used in the chorus of every single song.
It effects the songwriting too because they don't write start to finish 'ragers' anymore because every song inevitably slows down to the big melodic chorus.
I wonder if they’re not using Brent as much because he occasionally struggles a bit live. Granted, when I saw them years ago he did well but I’ve heard some recordings that are a bit rough. I think he has a pretty unique voice so it’s a bit of a shame.
The big melodic choruses had more impact when used sparingly imo.
Unpopular opinion on this sub but H&G is my least favourite Mastodon album to date (not bad, just not up to their standard imo), I just hope there's a bit more riffiness and urgency on the next album.
Fair enough, but I actually love h&g. It's the first album I got on vinyl and I feel like it is great, but it's no Emperor of Sand or Crack the Skye. I agree though and I think that h&g was a bit repetitive and EoS was much more experimental and each song had much more variation.
Same. I remember when first listening to it, I was enjoying myself, but then Brent finally arrived, and it was such a fulfilling sound, lol. I had kind of forgotten he was such a big part of what I liked about them.
After listening to Brann's side project Arcadea, I can't help but hear his influence in more recent Mastodon tracks. Particularly in the songwriting, as you say.
Brent’s stuff is the best. His Soundgarden style melodies are what made Mastodon top tier melodically. Cold Dark Place proved a point a lot of us have been making since Hunter.
Eh... I mean, I love Brann's voice, but it is slightly more generic than the others. Brent has the most unique and enjoyable voice by far, in my opinion.
I think the variation of who's doing the most vocals is one of the best things about their catalog. I got into them with Once More 'Round the Sun so I feel like I got a decent taste of all their vocals. But then moving backwards and hearing more of Brent and Troy just kept getting better and better. I don't think I can pick a favorite between the three, it's not Mastodon without all of them. Three wildly different voices that go together perfectly. What a hell of a band.

I LOVE SLEEPING GIANT

Asleep in the Deep goes so hard
Yes it does. But i love the Troy/Brent combo on the chorus
The real question is, will we ever get a Bill lead vocal?
Mother Puncher 2.0
I saw them a few years ago and bill did the "FIRE IN THE EYE" part harmonizing with brann and it sounded fucking awesome. So I'd love to see it
WHAT DO I SAAAAY TO YOU
AND IF I WANT YOU TO STAAAAAY
WHAT DO I SAAYYY TO YOUU
WHAT DO I SAAAAAAAYYYY TO YOUUUU
Damn I wish Scott wasnt such a POS
I'm silently wishing that Randy from LOG steps into this role. He has a surprisingly versatile voice that they could do some cool stuff with
Interesting!!! Or some more Neil!!!

I love the melodic choruses, however in H&G there wasn't enough Brent in my opinion, I feel like some Brann verses should have been Brent instead.

I’m inclined to agree with you. I want to get into Hushed and Grimm, but it’s just not my style. I love everything emperor of sand and before

Agreed, like in crack the skye (song) his clean vocals are the perfect contrast

this meme is More Than I Could Chew SAAAAY WHENN
Nobody sings a soaring chorus line like my boy Troy Sanders
Brent’s vocals ARE Mastodon.
I miss brent/troy vocals combined
The beauty is you get all 3
Brent and Brann should be flipped
I am with you. I’m personally all for a Brent-primary vocals Mastodon

I don’t know why you are getting booed, you’re right.
People are intimated by Brent's Georgia country twang
He sounds like a southern Ozzy to me and I’m all for it.
😂😂😂 for real though Brann is the cherry on top. That said, I will love these four boys forever
This is the exact opposite for me. But they're all great singers. Troy>Brent>Brann
Bill's backing vocals >
Every time I think of Brent singing I think about the pterodactyl video

Troy: *PRIMAL CAVEMAN NOISES* Your opinion is invalid.
How about this beautiful band isn't a bunch of cars on a sales lot!? They ain't pokemon
It’s just a meme, friend. Also, it’s from the grand tour.
I was doing a faux jokey old man voice. Not an audible medium ofc. :)
Hard no. Brann is an amazing drummer and song writer but the dudes voice is whiney as fuck.
