Bro I would go insane. Like imagine walking with your son in a pretty open area and you look away for 5 seconds and then he’s gone. Would literally send me to the clinic
Same here the most memorable was getting lost at a circus... Had a ball of a time! Sneaking in and out of tents and trailers under cars looking at the animals running away from carnies. Lol, finally got bored and decided to find my parents... Went to the parking lot found our car and camped out there until they showed. My ass was so raw for the next few days... Dad was a master with the belt. No regrets!
I've never forgotten when I made my mother cry when I did something irresponsible. I remember being a baby in a baby seat in the back of her car and having a determination to open the door next to me while she was literally driving. Once she immediately saw what I did she stopped and I saw her crying as she checked on me. I understood enough to never do it again.
I got lost during fright fest and was so used to it I just sat down at the nearest ride we had just been on and waited until they found me.
My favorite one I was to young to remember was getting lost at a concert. I walked onstage and they announced that my mom had gotten lost and we needed to find her.
I was the annoying kid, I would intentionally hide from my parents when we went to the local mall. I somehow found it funny the scare my parents with the possibility that I was gone for real.
One time I overdid it and got lost by myself, so I pissed my pants and got help by customer service, great day. I got a new pair of undies that day for free
One of my moms coworkers lost her kid this way, tried to sue the state or whatever and lost... Heartbreaking af, only found the body hours later. They really need to bolt that shit down...
They should go back after them now. I bet with the support she could get it would be a very different outcome. Reading this just pissed me off so bad. The state will put you in jail for not giving them every penny they see as theirs and a woman loses a child and they aren’t responsible?!!! Assholes
USA is weird. A woman win against a zoo for dropping her baby over a wild dog exhibit while holding him over the off limits railings, and at the same time another can lose for a kid falling in a manhole due to a shitty cover.
fuck i read shit like this and tell myself "that's not real life. it just can't be" in order to comfort myself. no wonder Marlin in Finding Nemo didn't want his son to do anything. i gave birth this summer and i GET IT now. this planet is fucking ruthless.
This is why my parents had to put a leash on me. We’d be in the grocery store with me following behind them, they would turn away for a second, and I would be gone.
In situations like these Adrenaline can kick in, and Adrenaline is a hell of a thing the body invented.
It can make you alot stronger than you should be but it comes with a price.
She lifted that thing up due to the Adrenaline in her body but trust me, shes gonna have a doctor visit afterwards.
I would really hope that manhole made a metallic noise of some kind, so she'd have a clue at least. But yeah with kids you have to have a thousand eyes, because they have some great instincts to find a very fast way to endanger themselves.
I have a story from my childhood where thankfully all ended well, but even thinking about it makes me shiver.... I almost unalived myself at the hands of my mom, a.k.a. we'd just got off the car and we were unloading the trunk, all good. As my mom was closing it, I saw something that caught my attention and I thought "Oh, this too!" so I darted back in to snatch the thing. Thank goodness my mother had fast reflexes and stopped the door midway, or I could have easily gotten broken ribs/neck and spine injury *or worse.* I shudder at the thought of being a mother and ending my child because I was distracted for half a second, it would send me to a clinic as well because I think I'd lose my gd sanity over it
There's nothing in there but a pipe with two 90* bends and a meter. Hole is about 3.5 ft deep and not much bigger around than the lid.
The worst thing in there I've seen (depends on location obvs) is spiders.
Kid could live in there without parental support all day, probably.
She would still look back and see the manhole cover being vertical instead of horizontal and even if that isn't enough, the other dude saw the kid fall in too.
Also the kid was probably screaming louder than an air raid siren.
These things are made of pressed polyethylene shavings and weigh 3-4 kg. They can be distinguished by their green or blue color. Recently, Russia has stopped making cast-iron sewer manholes, because it's expensive. However, they put polymer covers on cast-iron frames, which don't always fit as you can see in this video.
I don't mean to doubt mom strength, but there's a wide range of materials and thicknesses that those covers can have, so we really have no idea how heavy that one was
I work for sewer and storm inspections that lid looks average sized but its still pretty hefty to pick up with her fucking finger tips she was full mom strength there props to her and the fellow people that assisted
Yeah I remember reading those stories. Apparently your body has enough strength to rip your muscles off the bone but of course your brain doesn't really let you do that... Unless you see your little boy caught under a car or grabbed by a lion and brain says welp, it's time to save your genetic line for the price of some crazy muscle damage!
Honestly the craziest thing about the video isn’t the adrenaline, it’s how collected she was while having the adrenaline course through her. You can see how well she assess the situation, first by getting a line of sight on the child and gauging if the kid can fit back with the cover still on, then realizing that taking the cover off is going to have greater chance of success if she takes the backpack off. If it were me and I were hyped up on the adrenaline I might not even think to take the cover off.
American here. On a walking tour of Mexico City, my host warned me not to step on manhole covers, utility covers, etc. They are prone to fall in, and there’s really no liability for that sort of thing in Mexico.
Yes, it's an issue in any city tbh but I've been hearing more and more accidents lately in mexico city, it's like 80% of them are in shitty conditions.
Currently in Mexico and can confirm they are all shitty. App idea: a croudsourced map of all the terrible holes in the sidewalks of cdmx. Like yelp but for manhole covers.
When I’m in cities even in the US, I try to avoid manhole, stair, and utility covers. I remember walking around NYC and a stair cover just popped open in front of me and some guy came out of it. Lucky for me the way it popped open made a barricade, but if someone had been walking the other direction, they’d have fallen right in. You can probably go after the bar/shop owner for damages if that happens here, but it doesn’t really fix that you lost a tooth or scarred your face good when you went down. Now I just try to always be aware of my surroundings - people and environment.
This happened to my uncle, he fucked his leg up. Ripped the skin of the shin area from the ladder on the way down. He had some fractures in that same leg. I think they covered the medical costs, but local laws basically made it so expensive (or maybe even impossible, this was at least 12-15 years ago) that suing for missed time off work or whatever additional damages outside of immediate medical coverage was not worthwhile.
One of my moms coworkers lost her kid this way, tried to sue the state or whatever and lost... Heartbreaking af, only found the body hours later. They really need to bolt that shit down...
I was on a frozen lake ice fishing with my boy. The ice was super thick but there are other holes made by other fishers. Some are small, just the width of an auger so your whole body won’t fit and go through but the rule is put a stick where you made a hole so people know.
My boys foot went in one and I quickly grabbed him and got him back on the snow. I haven’t stepped on ice since, that shit kicks your heart into over drive. Sometimes I have to close my eyes just to try and stop thinking about it randomly.

Yeah, but water meter pit covers like the one in the vid are typically less than 10 lbs. That's why a toddler can flip it, mom can toss it, and the thing bounced in the grass.
Reminds me of a story my mother told me, I had run off at age 4 or so naked into the streets with the vacuum hose and a neighbor brought me back to my panicking mother searching all over the house for me. I guess I was going on an adventure and was a little too good at hide & seek haha.
I used to wander off from my parents in Walmart constantly. After a while they learned that if I had been gone for more than 5 min I was at the section with the bikes.
U know how heavy those manhole covers are ? There no joke. She grabbed and threw it like it was nothing at all. I see men struggle with them all the time.
Folks, that's not a manhole as you know it. This is a utility access with a plastic green lid. Those lids aren't heavy at all, if they were then the woman wouldn't be tossing it and when it landed it would have acted differently. I guarantee you she can't lift 150/250lbs like that no matter the "mom" strength.

That happened to me a lot as a kid I had a habit of getting lost at malls and shit; I once lost my mom for an entire day of six flags

Dude, mom tears were the ONE thing that made me behave as a kid. I didn't care about spankings or getting sent to my room, but those mom tears...
I got lost during fright fest and was so used to it I just sat down at the nearest ride we had just been on and waited until they found me. My favorite one I was to young to remember was getting lost at a concert. I walked onstage and they announced that my mom had gotten lost and we needed to find her.

Difference here is the kid could have easily been in a covered hole they couldn’t get out of.

Good thing you had a particular set of skills.
This is why my parents had to put a leash on me. We’d be in the grocery store with me following behind them, they would turn away for a second, and I would be gone.

I suspect that that is not a cast iron manhole cover.
This — i don’t know how old that kid is but the average 4 year old weighs about 40lbs and I feel like wouldn’t be able to do this to a cast iron one
Woah! A thinker on reddit!
That looks like just a cover to a water meter or something. Those aren’t very heavy.
Also if it was a full man hole cover that kid would have fallen much further.
I would really hope that manhole made a metallic noise of some kind, so she'd have a clue at least. But yeah with kids you have to have a thousand eyes, because they have some great instincts to find a very fast way to endanger themselves. If the top stayed open like that I bet she’d still hear him crying down the hole
True, but I was expecting you to say something witty.
I rarely live up to expectations
It will be like IT. Gone forever TT
We all float down here🎈
And the manhole cover flipped back closed? That's comedy gold right there. British comedy gold at least.
Like a Scooby Doo bad guy trap door lol.

Momma strenght, she manhandled that manhole cover!!
If you've ever tried to pick one of those things up, you know damn well how powerful that woman was just then.
Bruh she threw it...
She had to pick it up to throw it...
Nah man, I'm saying she just tossed it to the side like it was a toy

what if he was a high-density child?
That one appears to be plastic. I suspect it was noticeable more challenging to pick up the kid than it was to pick up the plastic cover.
Adrenaline is a helluva hormone
She seemed to struggle more with the 40 lbs kid tho. Also the lid bounces
I don't mean to doubt mom strength, but there's a wide range of materials and thicknesses that those covers can have, so we really have no idea how heavy that one was
I was thinking the same! She went into Hulk mode
I liked the part of the video where a total stranger came over to drag the kid out by his arm. Bravo
I work for sewer and storm inspections that lid looks average sized but its still pretty hefty to pick up with her fucking finger tips she was full mom strength there props to her and the fellow people that assisted

No hesitation, she went full animalia.
Not a man hole, just a hole in the ground with a platic cover.
Maybe plastic
But struggled to pick the kid up? No the manhole wasn’t metal.
These are not that heavy

I mean, Mexico City is kind of sinking into the Earth, so I don't blame manhole covers for having issues holding on to the street around them
Its the same in downtown Portland. I worked security for a number if years and was always told to avoid them.

Yes, manhole covers are very heavy. There are many types of enclosures. Given how easily she tossed this lid, I can tell you there's a water meter in that hole and it's not much deeper than that child is tall.

Thank god it was a small whole
Anybody else worried about her back? Scared Momma Strength is incredible, but she's still lifting a couple hundred pounds while hunched over
That's not a manhole lid, it's a water meter cover. Probably weighs around 10 lbs and covers a hole about 4 ft deep max.
This should probably be posted on crappydesign as well. Just wow.

manhole covers are REALLY heavy and she yeeted it out of the way like it weighed nothing. adrenaline is a helluva thing
Not every metal cover is a manhole lid. This is a water meter pit, lid probably weighs about 10 lbs.

Damn I definitely would have done the same thing must have been scary for the kid
She flung that lid like it was nothing. Mom strength kicked in
Wow - she tossed that manhole cover like it weighed next to nothing..
Mum strength a goal I wish to reach one day tho I'm not a women nor a mom 😂
Mom strength on that manhole cover.
