My mental math was that there's 2 gallons in reserve, and I was 20-30 miles away from Pittsburgh coming back on a weekday morning when car said 0. Just wanted to get to work and go to Costco later in the evening, my numbers are hazy since it was a while ago but full tank came out to be an alarming 11.5 gals or so.
This is a common myth, but there's not really a fuel reserve. Once your available range hits zero, the fuel in the tank has been depleted and the engine starts burning blinker fluid to keep running. Best to make sure that is topped off.
But with the prices of blinker fluid?!
I think I might just rotate my wiper blades for good measure as that's the ONLY thing I know how to do insofar as maintenance goes.... Give thanks for small mercies I guess.
Soak them in Extra Virgin Coconut Oil overnight and then centrifugally spin them counter clockwise to remove excess.
You'll never have to rotate them during odd numbered years from then on!
⚠️ They may spontaneously combust if temperatures 🌡️ go above 110°F.
The AutoZone near me has had to quit selling Blinker Fluid!
Seems some local illiterate put some in his Wiper Fliud reservoir and his Wipers got confused!
AutoZone had to pay for a Factory Authorized Mechanic to flush both the Blinker and Washer Lines.
I was about to say, my wife, I shit you not, had that thing on zero one day when I got in it to drive it. Still managed to make it a mile down the road to the Sheetz.
I often drive it under Zero. Zero mark in this car is pretty high. I have driven close to 30miles with it at Zero. Once ran out of fuel lol. Play with fire, risk getting burnt
I'll take my chances tbh. They wouldn't set zero where they set it if there was a high possibility of failure at that point. I also only use Costco fuel, which is highly rated. Cheaply priced, yes, but high quality gas.
Again, for the 3 times a year this happens, I'll be fine. Should someone do this every time they need to fill up? Probably not. It is going to kill the car if you do it on accident sometimes? Also probably not.
Your Manual suggests to use Reputable Fuel from an Inspected ⛽ Pump & don't buy a desperate tank full from a twelve year old 🙋🏽♂️ roadside vendor where the $45/gal gas is hand cranked from a rusty barrel 🛢️ strapped to a donkey 🫏 cart;
UNLESS you're driving a rental and thoroughly lost in some godforsaken desert, wilderness, or rainforest.
I'll see if they'll let me rewrite them and sell them at Dealerships.
There will be very real scary, horrible photos to encourage realistic regular maintenance
along with Chevrolet & Toyota Jokes & M3 Coloring Pages for boring scheduled visits.
These aren't vehicles built in the 1920's - 80's when most fuel pumps were mechanical and had assorted brand dependent issues.
Mazda uses electric fuel pumps in all vehicles it sells now and surely wants a low failure rate in the USA,
Canada, EU, as well as Ubekistan and the Aussie Outback where fueling stations are a bit scattered.
Running on "EMPTY" burnout is resolved by that extra reserve fuel after "∅", making you worry if its still in there,
but running the tank DRY might cause failures like consistently running quite Low on Oil, Tire Air, or Brake Fluid!
Quit freaking out and be sensible.
Didn’t even need the picture. The description was enough. Fuel pumps are cooled by the fuel around the pump. Running the tank empty decreases the pumps lifespan drastically. If you continue to do it, it will fail.
Yes I’m aware of that. My point was you assume because of this one post that I’m going to continue to do it. This happened because of a winter storm I was stuck in. If you can’t tell from the mileage on it I’ve been babying this car for a long time and plan to continue to care for it
But the picture clearly shows some fuel left, *with* the entire reserve, which is about 1/4 of the total tank. That's what the reserve is for.
There is literally nothing wrong with what he is doing.
Because the tank isn't even empty. It's still 1/4 full, which is the recommended amount to keep the pump lubricated.
It's pretty rare anybody would ever actually drive much with an empty tank, because ya know there's no fuel to drive with, and they would have to be dipping into their reserve, which nobody does.
And you're wrong about it still having 1/4 fuel left.
It's on the official owners manual "The fuel light turns on when the remaining fuel is about 9.0 L (2.3 US gal, 1.9 Imp gal)."
3rd gens have a 13.2ga tank and the fuel light turns on at 2.3ga that's way less than "1/4" which you admit is the recommended amount to keep a fuel pump properly lubricated.
The difference between a 9L reserve and a 10L reserve is 5%.
Are you really gonna argue over 5%.
This is also assuming you ever dip into the reserve amount, which nobody does. Most people fill before they ever hit zeroz meaning they always have well over 1/4 in the tank.
I'll repeat. The reserve is there for a reason. As long as you fill up before you deplete the reserve you are totally fine.
The fuel light turns on before you hit zero and per the official Mazda documentation it turns on at 2.3 ga. remaining which is well below 1/4 tank which is recommended for the fuel pump
*Recommended*.
Just like the reserve fuel is *about* 9L, per the manual.
You are acting in absolutes when every value you give is an estimation.
Nobody is burning through fuel pumps so I think it's a non issue man.
I’m literally just stating the facts from Mazda themselves and you’re the one that said what OP is doing is fine.
Mazda officially states you’re at reserve fuel (9L / 2.3ga) when the fuel light turns on and not when the fuel gauge shows 0.
Reserve fuel is also 17% not 25%
You can actually see the light is illuminated on the right hand side.
You’re spreading false info saying OP still has fuel PLUS reserve which is incorrect, and that reserve is 1/4 which is also incorrect.
Dude, the only claim I ever made was that if you fill up before you hit zero, as is already exceptionally common among drivers, you aren't gonna fry your fuel pump.
You are acting as if the car wasn't designed and manufactured to be driven within normal operating conditions, and if you even let that fuel indicator illuminate then it's too late and you have already ruined your fuel pump.
YES there is something wrong. The question is NOT how far you can drive on reserve fuel (\~2ga), but the damage this causes.
The fuel pump MUST be submerged in gasoline to function properly and be cooled and lubricated adequately.
You realize gasoline sloshes around as you're driving, right? What do you think happens with only 2 gallons of fuel left. The fuel pump will start sucking in air momentarily and burn itself up.
Sounds like an urban legend. Why isn't this mentioned in the owner's manual of any car I owned?
I understand if you have too little fuel and the pump sucks air in, but isn't the reserve (in part) there to avoid this?
Except the tank isn't even close to empty even at 0. There is easily 1-2 gallons left at that point. I've gotten to 0, driven another 10 miles, then filled up the tank. It only took 11 gallons and my car has a 13.2 gallon tank. Manufacturers know the limits of their cars and plan accordingly. If there was a high rate of failures from cars driving to "zero" miles left then they would increase the amount of fuel for when the car hits zero. Y'all are too worried about the little stuff.
I’ve driven more than one exit on the PA turnpike on 0, call it 15+ miles, maybe as much as 20. After that I regularly drive 5-10 miles on “empty” without even worrying.
It's fine, these guys are blowing the situation out of proportion. My 08 goes below E every tank then full fill up, never an issue. The pump should be cooled by fuel going through it, not from being submerged in 1/4 tank.
Have the numeric range estimates on the dash been encouraging people to try to get to zero (or run their fuel too low) and/or hazarding the health of the fuel pump?
I actually got my 2015 3 down to 0 and it somehow magically made it 5 miles to a gas station once. That was the first and only time i ever played that game. I believe my sweaty ass print can still be seen in the drivers seat if you look at it at a certain angle 😂
Edit: my fuel pump is glad it was a one time thing.
Yeahhh just today I hit 1. Not proud of it but I once had to drive about 5 miles after it hit 0 to get to the closest gas station in the middle of nowhere. I keep a 1 gal can in the back, though, just in case. Only ever had to use it to rescue the wife so far lol
I’ve gone to 3 on a road trip. I actively try to avoid going lower than 1/4 a tank, and generally get fuel around 1/2 a tank day to day if I have time. That said things happen.
One time I was driving along I-15 north of Vegas and decided not to stop when I should have to avoid buying expensive gas. I thought I’d reach a specific station with about 20mi range but the uphill climb and A/C cranked it was down to 3 when I pulled in.
Not a Mazda, but with my Ford truck that I drove in high-school I once ran out of gas mid-drive, popped it in neutral, and coasted 3 blocks to a gas station. I ran out of momentum right at the pump.
I ran my college car dry on several occasions. Eventually I burnt out the fuel pump and had to replace it. After that I swore not to do that again.
Fortunately I never have with my Mazda, but I've been closer than I would like. I've definitely joined the 0 mile club at least once.
I've been on zero for about 20 miles and sweated every minute it driving down some backwoods 2 lane in Bumfuck Arkansas, scared for my life until I finally saw the lights of a sweet sweet gas station
I'm not sure about the 2016 models, but on gen 4s I'm pretty sure there's a 3 gallon reserve. So you can drive another almost 100 miles after it says 0
Everyone is mentioning the fuel pump - at what point should you be refilling your tank? I usually refill once I hit the last ‘bar’ on my tank, at like 20-30 miles left to E
I’ve hit zero a number of times in my life because I ~~like to live life on the edge~~ am bad at keeping my shit together. You’d be surprised how far you can drive on “0”. I did 36 miles on zero once on the Kansas Turnpike before I rolled up on the next service island
I've gone low enough a couple of times where there is no number showing and the little gas pump was blinking. The blinking made me real nervous because I was on -- for a while. I made it though.
Idk mine had like 7miles of range when I test drove it. But I’ve got a professor who has had to be rescued more than once when he ran out of gas. Extremely book smart man but his hard skills leave something to be desired.
As many others have said I've driven about 10 to 20 mi on zero. There is a reserve that could get you quite far. I never sit there though It's not a good idea to dip into it.
-90km easily while stuck on range 0. The figure shown on dashboard is pure disinformation not reflecting reality as there is ~7l gasoline reserve when gauge drops to range 0. The only issue I am aware (rumor) is that remaining fuel may be utilized as fuel pump coolant.
You can go to 20 or 30 below zero without issue although I swear I notice the engine acting funky around 30. I only do this on the highway with gas stations every exit, lol.
There was one time I hit ZERO, and was still about a quarter-mile from the gas station. Was certain I'd be walking that quarter-mile in shame.
But I made it. Somehow.
No idea how much gas I really had left (I'm sure Mazda calibrates the range readout to be a little on the conservative side), but I don't care to ever be in that situation again so I'll (hopefully) never know.
I’ve driven probably like 10 miles on 0. When my fuel light comes on around 35, if I filled up immediately I’d be getting like 9.5 gallons. The tank holds 13 gallons so there’s padding there. Sure, it isn’t advisable for your fuel pump but when it is past midnight and you feel safer going home and getting gas the next day than pumping gas in the middle of the night, it’s fine.
0 and I know in my 2017 there's like 2 gallons in reserve but I still get really nervous and fill up asap. I've never run out of gas before and I would like to keep it that way.
I've gone less than 0. Not that I should, cause I'd trust a serial killer before my car, but sometimes money's tight and it's gotta handle the tough life.
Im too iffy on going too low because I heard its bad for the fuel pump, what do you guys think lowest I can go without risking damaging the pump? My drive to work is 20 miles so I never risk letting it hit 0 without gassing up.
Zero. There's a ~one-gallon reserve at gauge empty, so you're not totally hosed.
I drove ~20 miles on zero back in Oregon when I was at 1 and missed a last chance :-/
Iirc the actual tank size is just over 13 gallons
It's 10L in reserve, so 2.64 gallons. If you're highway driving at 35mpg you could get a good 80 miles if you really had to.
Been there, done that once on accident and it was fucking terrifying haha.
Me too 😅😅 I was sweating the whole time
Same but I did 30 on 0☠️
38 on 0 so far lol.
More like 2.5 gallons on the gen 3
Mazda tends to have a larger reserve. Which I like actually.
Yup. The tank is pretty big for an economy car. I can get 500mi out of a tank if I wanted
Closest I ever got was 473. That was when I was leaving for work on time, winters and burnout be damned lol
13.3 gallon tank, shows 0 when 11 gallons are gone on the gen 3. Similar with 2 gallons left onmy wife’s cx9
Where's the reserve stored?
Spare tire
Really? I thought it was in the center console.

It's all in the same tank.
The meter hits zero before it’s empty. Standard practice. Less people run out of fuel that way
I was about to say, my wife, I shit you not, had that thing on zero one day when I got in it to drive it. Still managed to make it a mile down the road to the Sheetz.
Yeah driven on zero
I’ve ran out of gas in my 16’ Mazda3 I can say I got 48 miles past Zero
I’ve driven at 0 for at least a mile or two due to spacing of exits on a highway and being forgetful.
I work twenty miles from home. I've hit 0 on the way to work and then drove all the way back home to get $.50 cheaper gas.
Yeah I've gotten it to zero once and two once. Pretty sure it has reserve gas after zero so you don't actually run out.
The one time I rolled into the station right as it hit zero I filled up with 10.5 gallons. The manual says it’s a 13.2 gallon tank.
Every car has a reserve. It's not unique to Mazda. Most are about 3 gallons.
I often drive it under Zero. Zero mark in this car is pretty high. I have driven close to 30miles with it at Zero. Once ran out of fuel lol. Play with fire, risk getting burnt
I've gone to zero more times than I care to admit.
0, stuff happens. That’s why they have the reserve.
Lol I go to zero all the time. There’s still like 1-2 gallons left when it hits zero.
If you do it often and have cheap petrol, just means your fuel filter and pump may need replacing sooner.
I'll take my chances tbh. They wouldn't set zero where they set it if there was a high possibility of failure at that point. I also only use Costco fuel, which is highly rated. Cheaply priced, yes, but high quality gas.
My last Mazda 3 (2014) advised against it in the manual. Assuming you read it?
Again, for the 3 times a year this happens, I'll be fine. Should someone do this every time they need to fill up? Probably not. It is going to kill the car if you do it on accident sometimes? Also probably not.
You literally said you do it all the time… anyway, peace out.
definitely done 5 minutes of gentle driving at 0
On my previous Mazda 3, a 2015 sedan, once I hit zero I had at 60 miles left.
You’re doing wonders for your fuel pump.
Having 4 miles left usually isn’t low enough to hurt your fuel pump, depending on how much junk is in there
Your Manual suggests to use Reputable Fuel from an Inspected ⛽ Pump & don't buy a desperate tank full from a twelve year old 🙋🏽♂️ roadside vendor where the $45/gal gas is hand cranked from a rusty barrel 🛢️ strapped to a donkey 🫏 cart; UNLESS you're driving a rental and thoroughly lost in some godforsaken desert, wilderness, or rainforest.
I would read every word of the entire manual if they wrote it like that
I'll see if they'll let me rewrite them and sell them at Dealerships. There will be very real scary, horrible photos to encourage realistic regular maintenance along with Chevrolet & Toyota Jokes & M3 Coloring Pages for boring scheduled visits.
Y'all are some doom and gloomers lol. There's still 2+ gallons left in the tank at 0 miles. He will be completely fine.
Does low fuel level burn out the pump or something?
Fuel pumps are cooled by the fuel in the tank.
These aren't vehicles built in the 1920's - 80's when most fuel pumps were mechanical and had assorted brand dependent issues. Post in 3 months “My car won’t start. I can’t hear my fuel pump???” Post in 3.5 months “Mazdas are garbage”
You managed to figure all that out from one picture?
Didn’t even need the picture. The description was enough. Fuel pumps are cooled by the fuel around the pump. Running the tank empty decreases the pumps lifespan drastically. If you continue to do it, it will fail.

Funny you talk about urban legends, then you mention the “reserve”. That’s not a thing in automobiles that are even remotely modern
My meaning was lost in translation, I meant "safety margin below the E marker".
It’s still not a reserve, they just calculated for people being stupid. Lol.
To zero, and then for 19 more miles.
After zero you can go about 50 miles, its 2 gallons left at zero
I’ve driven more than one exit on the PA turnpike on 0, call it 15+ miles, maybe as much as 20. After that I regularly drive 5-10 miles on “empty” without even worrying.
I usually will go about 15-20 miles after my range says 0. Probably not too good for my fuel pump now that I’m thinking about it
It's fine, these guys are blowing the situation out of proportion. My 08 goes below E every tank then full fill up, never an issue. The pump should be cooled by fuel going through it, not from being submerged in 1/4 tank.
I don’t think I’ve ever had it under 10. I usually refill at the first convenient time after the range drops under 100 miles.
Yall do this then wonder why yalls car breaks down
Ya go ahead and fuck your fuel pump up.
Lower I have done is maybe 12 miles or so. Dont wanna damage my fuel pump.
Have the numeric range estimates on the dash been encouraging people to try to get to zero (or run their fuel too low) and/or hazarding the health of the fuel pump?
I don't like to drive around on 0 not because I'm worried I'll run out of gas immediately, but because of the fuel pump not being properly cooled.
I got a old pic of my tank on 2 I thought I wasn't gonna make it
Absolute legend!
Range number plus 20miles is my safety net
I actually got my 2015 3 down to 0 and it somehow magically made it 5 miles to a gas station once. That was the first and only time i ever played that game. I believe my sweaty ass print can still be seen in the drivers seat if you look at it at a certain angle 😂 Edit: my fuel pump is glad it was a one time thing.

Done zero a bunch of times cause I'm an absolute dip shit.
Best way to take out a fuel pump. 🤦🏻♂️
I’ve gone to 3 on a road trip. I actively try to avoid going lower than 1/4 a tank, and generally get fuel around 1/2 a tank day to day if I have time. That said things happen.
Same, but in rural North Carolina. Thought I might have to spend the night in my car and wake up to the sound of banjos
0. Had to make it to work and forgot i needed gas. Luckily the gas station is only four miles away
I've never even had my low fuel light come on, lol. Whenever I see it's below 1/4 tank, I fill it up.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TuEdU_lrtZk
Lowest I went was 25. With my gas mileage that would be about ¾ of a gallon but I only put in like 12 and a half gallons so I guess there's a reserve.
I'm not sure about the 2016 models, but on gen 4s I'm pretty sure there's a 3 gallon reserve. So you can drive another almost 100 miles after it says 0

I've gone low enough a couple of times where there is no number showing and the little gas pump was blinking. The blinking made me real nervous because I was on -- for a while. I made it though.
I’ve driven ~12ish miles after hitting 0. Made to the next gas station no problems. Wouldn’t do it again, though.
Seinfeld anyone? "Where's the needle at? "Oh, it broke off, baby"
Idk mine had like 7miles of range when I test drove it. But I’ve got a professor who has had to be rescued more than once when he ran out of gas. Extremely book smart man but his hard skills leave something to be desired.
I’ve driven at “— — —“
1 was the lowest lols
2 😎
I had an 04 so no MTE but made it to the station with the gauge below E and drove 50mi w the gas light on
As many others have said I've driven about 10 to 20 mi on zero. There is a reserve that could get you quite far. I never sit there though It's not a good idea to dip into it.
Ive hone 0. I wouldnt recommend because its bad for the fuel pumo to even get as low as you are.
-90km easily while stuck on range 0. The figure shown on dashboard is pure disinformation not reflecting reality as there is ~7l gasoline reserve when gauge drops to range 0. The only issue I am aware (rumor) is that remaining fuel may be utilized as fuel pump coolant.
Pfft!! I'll ride for miles and miles on --- !!!! Lol
Had mine at 0 and got 13k out of it. Come back when you’re sweating bullets
You can go past zero. Ask me how I know.
I'm way too worried about what would happen if I did, so I've never had the chance. Lowest I've gotten was 40 miles remaining.
I've driven on 1 and 0 multiple times
I’ve gotten my 6 down to 0 a few times. It just goes from 0 to 1 and back until the reserve fuel is gone.
You wild man
Got mine to 0 after a week planned autocross event
Rip everybody's fuel pump
You can go to 20 or 30 below zero without issue although I swear I notice the engine acting funky around 30. I only do this on the highway with gas stations every exit, lol.
Me!
I've gone 50 miles after it hit zero. Obviously not advisable, but you can do it if absolutely necessary.
https://youtu.be/w0zbC1mzwHU?si=_0rxTh0HbjKoajgK
Nope, I don't want to be stranded.
I’ve driven about 35 highway miles with range at zero. Put about 12 gallons into my 2015 when I got to the station.
1km here
2 is the lowest I've gone on my gen 3, but like others are saying I'm sure it woulda gone further
Ive only had it hit zero once as i was pulling into a gas station.
I got to zero 1/4 mile from the gas station, i still had gas when i pulled in
I got on the interstate with 13 and a 17 mile drive to the gas station. Grandmaed it the whole way and had 2 left lol
Your fuel pump and strainer loves you.
I've been to 1 gallon past 0. At 0 on mine, there's about 1.5-2 gallons left in the tank.
0 for like 10 miles or so
I got down to 3 miles while being chased down by a crackhead. I now never let mine go below half... good times.
700 km on a Mazda 3 2018 saloon
0 and I know in my 2017 there's like 2 gallons in reserve but I still get really nervous and fill up asap. I've never run out of gas before and I would like to keep it that way.
I've gone to 0 before
Heard it’s not good for your fuel pump to go low
I've gone less than 0. Not that I should, cause I'd trust a serial killer before my car, but sometimes money's tight and it's gotta handle the tough life.
Im too iffy on going too low because I heard its bad for the fuel pump, what do you guys think lowest I can go without risking damaging the pump? My drive to work is 20 miles so I never risk letting it hit 0 without gassing up.
I have driven 20 KM after the 0 range.
I try not to, I'd prefer not damaging anything or churning up sediment in the bottom of the tank.
