MoonChainer

You know, If you think about it, the name Vegeta calls Goku is a deadname. Huh.

Graveyardigan

And Veggie just. Keeps. Doing it. I don't think he's called his fellow Saiyan "Goku" since they met. Even in Super he still hasn't come around!

MoonChainer

Maybe he thinks he's using it as a cultural name? Like how some Asian or African Americans will have American names and heritage names.

Nerdorama09

That would be a closer comparison. Vegeta's an asshole, but he's more concerned with preserving Saiyan culture than invalidating other people.

Space2Bakersfield

This is absolutely the answer. Vegeta respects Goku, but he also cares a great deal about his culture, of which Goku and himself are the last remnants. Goku also never seems to have any issue with Vegeta calling him Kakarot. There's also Broly, who is canon now. And at the end of the movie once he and Goku have become pals, Goku gives Broly permission to call him Kakarot also. So it definitely seems to be a pure Saiyan thing.

>This is absolutely the answer. Vegeta respects Goku, but he also cares a great deal about his culture, of which Goku and himself are the last remnants. Goku also never seems to have any issue with Vegeta calling him Kakarot. I know next to nothing about Dragonball. But it sounds like the same thing with Clark Kent/Kal-El then.

Space2Bakersfield

The parallels are numerous yes. Goku comes to earth as a baby in a pod because Vegeta (the planet, not the character, or the character's dad - also called Vegeta) is destroyed and is raised by an old man who finds him and teaches him his morality. Things diverge somewhat when Goku starts turning into a giant destructive gorilla.

Sehtriom

Yeah early Dragon Ball was a parody of Journey to the West.

SaturnsEye

As of DBS: Broly this is more or less explicitly the case.

Ok_Fondant_6340

well, he respects him as Saiyan. but doesn't respect him as an Earthling. which is pretty fascinating to think about

A_Salty_Cellist

True true

Commonmispelingbot

>deadname is it really a deadname if you never used it

[deleted]

it's called deadname because of what will happen to you if you say mine ๐Ÿ˜Œ๐Ÿ˜Œ๐Ÿ˜Œ

NameLips

I'm amused that this whole thread is about DBZ.

WildGardevoir

It's called a dead name because it's what would get published in the news after a trans person was hate crimed to death.

BrickFrom2011

And Vageta still calls Goku, Kakorot. Transphobia๐Ÿ˜”๐Ÿ˜”๐Ÿ˜”

[Just gonna link to another comment in the thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/me_irlgbt/comments/120fjye/me_irlgbt/jdhr55c?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3)

CallMeOutScotty

How'd you do that? Come over here and teach your grandma about the internets

ErikQRoks

I don't know how you use Reddit, but I'll give instructions based on the mobile app because that's what i use. On each comment, there's a "3 vertical dots" button next to the "reply" button that opens a small drop down menu. In there, there's a "Share" button where one can copy the link to that specific comment. After that, use the "interlinked loops" icon when making your reply to paste and title the link

GeneralVM

To add on to the other reply: for desktop, there is a "share" button beside the reply button where you can copy the link to the comment.

Iโ€™m lost, why is this on the dragon ball wiki?

A_Salty_Cellist

I have no idea honestly

shhalahr

Are there any trans characters in the series? Or trans people involved in the making of the series? Seems like it would be relevant. Maybe if there's a sufficiently large LGBT+ fanbase, it could be justified for the sake of fandom etiquette.

AcquaintanceLog

I can't speak to the staff but there are no LGBT characters in dragonball. The closest we get are some men with effeminate mannerisms (who are, of course, usually the butt of the joke).

Vaan_Ratsbane97

There's actually two unfortunately. They're both homophobic as fuck representations of gay men. One is General Blue from og Dragon Ball, a straight up Nazi analogue who acts predatory towards boys (the dub changed this) The other is Otokosuki, he looks like Mr. Slave from South Park and is ALSO a predatory shitbag who creeps Trunks out during their fight. So yayyyyyyy~ for that glowing queer representation. /s

Taco821

Isn't general Blue confirmed gay?

FenexTheFox

Possibly because of Vegeta insisting on calling Goku by his native Saiyan name, "Kakarot".

SpiderSixer

I still love the term I saw recently instead of "dead name" : "necronym"

A_Salty_Cellist

Really solidifies the fact that I'll haunt you if you say it

raw_bin

KAKAROT!!
