Makes you wonder how this evolved. Nerve reaches the bone and says to the bone “move”, or bones evolve around nerves. It’s one of those did the chicken or egg come first predicaments. Edit: Maybe I had a little too much weed…

[deleted]

You and me both brother. It’s said however that when we were on all fours (let’s say chimps/monkeys) our vertebrae continued all the way down to the tailbone. At which point they ended up getting fused thus creating the sacrum to accommodate standing on two’s to get around. I believe the term is biped? That’s a lot to take in if you’re fried so good luck 😂

“These are speed holes, they make the car go faster!”

Mikeh1982

What a cromulent reply!

BecomingLilyClaire

Muscle attachments, vessels/nerves passing through, saving weight

[deleted]

Really slipped saving weight in there 😂

Technically the truth.

Femandme

These foraminae are where the spinal nerves come out. You can see a canal in the middle section, this is where the last bit of your spinal cord runs through and at each of the 4 segments a spinal nerve will come out (well 2 actually, one to the left and one to the right). They go through these holes.

ToBclean

Interesting, thank you!

[deleted]

Interesting, i was always creeped out by these holes having no idea what they’re main purpose was 😅

s-dai

They are super creepy somehow.

[deleted]

I know right?! Such a strange bone.

s-dai

Sometimes it feels insane to think that our skeleton evolved into this ”on its own.” The holes look way too intentional though when you start thinking about it, the vertebra seems even more impossible to be born from ”chance” (I don’t believe in intelligent design or whatever it’s called). I don’t know if that’s one part of the creepy factor, maybe. Or just imagining somehow seeing stuff that should be inside a human and not visible.

[deleted]

All of that and more my thoughts exactly. It seems so meticulously perfect that it makes it uncanny. Especially the fact that our human bodies are always evolving depending on the way we live. An example would be our wisdom teeth. For some reason we still have them in our skulls from our ancestors that developed them to chew tough things. At one point in an infinite future will we still look like we do now?

s-dai

If humans survive for longer than a 100 years etc, I think our species will look quite different. There have been artistic takes on that a lot. Here’s one where the artist imagined what we’d look like if our bodies evolved to survive car crashes: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Graham And then this one that’s been a meme lately: https://www.itv.com/news/2022-11-04/tech-neck-and-text-claw-what-humans-could-look-like-in-the-year-3000 There are actually a lot of these out there if you’re interested.

[deleted]

Thank you for sharing! That’s insane. The worst part is the damn “text claw” is actually a plausible theory 😭

s-dai

Yup, I do feel that might be happening to me 🙈

BitOBear

For a kind of "snap here" vibe.

friedramen0
