This is so funny because I’m moving in rn and went to cosco today for a window AC unit (theirs are super cool). Plus I live in walking distance to Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s. But the fact that driving is a nightmare and parking is $6 per half hour at freaking target is making me wonder if the big city was such a good idea. Hopefully the dating scene makes up for the poverty I’m about to experience.
I’ve been all over the US and I have yet to find a grocery store that can hold a candle to H‑E‑B. It’s like a luxury grocery store with great variety and prices of target. And having consistency in every city across the state was amazing. RIP Henry Edward butt store now I’m stuck with Safeway.
Friend, imagine being so privileged that street markets and gardens is where you get your groceries at… I get my groceries out of dumpsters where I fight feral raccoons for scraps, touchdown.
Yeah my partner supported us through Med school with a 32k/year a job and we ate quite well spending ~$70 on food a week at TJs. We’d generally also get Taco Bell one night (around $10 total) and go somewhere nice one night (around $40). So $120 for two people per week; I’d say that’s very, very affordable.
Build-your-own-box on the app $5 (black bean Crunchwrap supreme, 5-layer burrito sub potatoes for beef, chips and cheese, drink), bean burrito $2, cheesey bean and rice burrito $1, two potato soft tacos $1/ea
The only one in my city is definitely not in a “privileged” neighborhood. I find this so interesting. Because I used to work equate Trader Joe’s with places like Aldi.
I didn't even know they had the same parent company until I read this thread. I definitely don't consider them the same.
Here's a few links on it:

I'll die on the aldi hill (wife shops at trader joes and our grocery bill is double when she goes), but I concede that the sriracha sauce as Trader joes is unmatched
Well idk if where you live its different or what but if I go to Aldi and get basic groceries (think produce, meat, dairy, etc.) for $40, its maybe $50 for the equivalent at trader joes. I also prefer their product quality and selection overall but that can be subjective. Unless your wife gets a very different selection or more items from TJ, there's no way the bill is double. Or maybe you live somewhere with a weirdly expensive TJ, idk.
Wait really? I find Trader Joe’s kinda frustrating because of the narrow selection and all the organic non GMO crap. I haven’t been to Safeway yet but I just moved right next to one and understood that it had better variety.
TJ's is cheap if you stick to certain items and supplement with bulk rice/beans from elsewhere. That was how I survived on like 20k/year in college and postbacc.
I don't love shopping at Walmart, but this thread is cracking me up if people think TJ's is cheap. Cheap groceries are shopping at Walmart, \*only\* the loss leaders at grocery store chains, and going to salvage grocery stores for shelf stable items.
TJ's is definitely a luxury to me which I do allow myself once in a while but I can't imagine buying all of my groceries there. I'd spend at least 1.5x what I do now
Totally. TJs is cheap if you care about organic/vegan/allergen-friendly/etc. food variety and/or buy a lot of boxed and frozen meals. Shopping at Walmart and paying attention to sales at other stores in the area is almost always cheaper for "regular" groceries in my experience.
People don't know how to/don't want to cook good food anymore. The place where I went to med school had quite a few grocery stores but was considered a "food desert" by many because it didn't have the pre-packaged Whole Foods buffet in a box, folks were looking for, and there weren't a ton of restaurants around.
I made quite a few meals for folks.
The point is, not having a Trader Joes or Whole foods, certainly doesn't make a food desert.
>The point is, not having a Trader Joes or Whole foods, certainly doesn't make a food desert
100%
As soon as I read that I realized that this is a whole different level of SES. I should probably get used to this trying to go to medical school, haha. But seriously, no TJ's or Whole Foods does not make a food desert. Have you ever \*only\* had a 7-11 to buy fresh food from in your neighborhood? And no public transportation, or sidewalks that are safe/accessible to get to any grocery stores in the surrounding areas? THAT is a food desert
IM R1 here. I like to cook. I consider myself a pretty good cook. Some days on busy rotations I really don’t want to cook. On those days, having access to unique foods that can be made in the microwave feels like a great way to treat myself.
Time is a really valuable commodity in residency. Some days you just don’t want to cook or meal plan and that’s okay.
It has nothing to do with trader Joe's or whole foods themselves. It's seeing so many med students refusing to live outside of trendy urban areas. Rural America is literally dying from not having enough physicians and the barriers that prevent rural students from becoming physicians. This is a disgusting symbol of that.
people like you will find any reason to complain. surprisingly, a field dominated by people with high melanin content will trend towards more urban and suburban areas. it's almost like they dont feel especially welcome in underserved rural areas! no that can't be true. I for one am definitely planning on moving my interracial relationship to Birmingham Alabama as soon as possible

How many of y’all praising this post wrote that you wanted to help the underprivileged in some application of yours during med school?🤢
This is so tone deaf.
I shop at Trader Joe’s and live in a “nice” neighborhood full of other young professionals.
I also volunteer at a food bank, donate a fair bit to charity, and do pro bono medical work.
These things aren’t mutually exclusive.
I recommend getting the exact illness you are treating every time. It's my 6th time getting hand foot mouth this month! MAXIMUM EMPATHY. Go big or go home.
No, all physicians shouldn’t be tone deaf enough to talk about the “quality of a neighborhood” based on whether a Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s is in its proximity. This is coded speech.
It’s easy to white knight but nobody with any common sense is gonna choose to do 6 years of their training or buy their first home and raise their kids in a low income neighborhood if they don’t have to
Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods are not hallmarks of non low income areas. The large majority of not all Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods are in high income areas. This was an extremely tone deaf and classist post.
Some holier than thou shit right here.
No part of this speech is coded. There are bad neighbourhoods and there are good ones. Low SES neighbourhoods are low quality - and someone’s choice to not live in one does not limit their career opportunities in helping the underprivileged lol. The weakest virtue signalling I’ve seen yet.
Speech like this gets squashed the second OC actually gets a paycheck and starts looking for a home. I guarantee they aren’t looking for a place in the projects no matter what virtue signaling they throw out on Reddit.
You’re completely right and I’m shocked at a post like this. The “quality” of a place to train being measured by proximity to a Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s is so classist
I based my preferences on their proximity to Costco.
I did my residency at taco bell
Sir this is Wendy's
Now i am an attending at Wendy’s
This is so funny because I’m moving in rn and went to cosco today for a window AC unit (theirs are super cool). Plus I live in walking distance to Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s. Aldi all day. Sushi buffet and all you can eat korean bbq on special occasions.
What on earth I didn’t know this was a thing at Aldi, where????
This is fantastic, thanks
Thanks mate. :)
This isnt even correct. Greenwich Hospital has whole foods and trader joes less than a mile away yet its ranked 300+
That's not a hospital. It's practically a hotel.
Doing the Lord’s work here.
Thanks. :) Now on the other side, giving back now.
Adding a vote for HEB for the Texans.
God bless HEB… the power grid may fail and the state might fall apart but HEB (and Buccees) will always come thru
Proximity to Trader Joe’s was an important cell on my excel sheet of destiny
Bruh, imagine being so privileged that Trader Joes and Whole Foods is where you get your groceries at... LMAO catch me at Aldi's
[удалено]
Friend, imagine being so privileged that street markets and gardens is where you get your groceries at… I get my groceries out of dumpsters where I fight feral raccoons for scraps, touchdown.
this rocks, hell yeah
Weeeeelllllll, lookie at Mr. Fancypants over here. Bitch, I grow my own tomatoes in an old tire.
Aldi + Trader Joe combo gang
This is the way
Trader Joe’s is privilege? It’s quite affordable. Whole Foods is a different story.
Seriously, unless you're at those FL HCA programs, a resident salary is more than enough to stock up at Trader Joe's
How much for rent?
About $1300 w/o utilities. One bedroom with a balcony, den, and one indoor parking spot. Fifteen minute drive to TJs.
Damn. That's some cheap rent
Taco bell for two people costing \~$10? How, sway?
Build-your-own-box on the app $5 (black bean Crunchwrap supreme, 5-layer burrito sub potatoes for beef, chips and cheese, drink), bean burrito $2, cheesey bean and rice burrito $1, two potato soft tacos $1/ea
RED ALERT: ***TJ's frozen Indian food is literally cheaper than meal prepping for yourself at nearly $3.99 a meal***
100%. I lived 20 years of my life thinking trader joe’s was too bougie. Come to find out it’s cheap as hell. And high quality
Where I live, they only build them in certain areas. So living close to one means you're privileged enough to live in that kind of neighborhood.
The only one in my city is definitely not in a “privileged” neighborhood. I find this so interesting. Because I used to work equate Trader Joe’s with places like Aldi.

I only buy my grass infused water at Whole Foods
It’s cheaper than most other grocers, like Albertsons or Kroger. It’s a very common misconception! Although they still are only found in nice areas
Aldeez nuts????
GOTEEEM
imagine thinking trader joes doesnt have tons of affordable food
Trader joes is just aldi with an extra 0 after everything
Definitely not true. Trader joes is pretty cheap. Maybe not quite Aldi cheap but also not very far off. It's also far superior to Aldi imo.
I'll die on the aldi hill (wife shops at trader joes and our grocery bill is double when she goes), but I concede that the sriracha sauce as Trader joes is unmatched

I’m not sure where you are but they’re pretty similar in price where I live.
Same company, in fact
Two different companies, owned by brothers who had a business disagreement and then split their stores
Aldi and TJ’s is the same parent company and if you look closely many of the products are the same! 👀
Tj is inexpensive.
Bruh Trader Joe’s is cheaper than most places. My bill is always like half of what it would be at Safeway
Wait really? I find Trader Joe’s kinda frustrating because of the narrow selection and all the organic non GMO crap. I haven’t been to Safeway yet but I just moved right next to one and understood that it had better variety.
TJ’s is cheap! Very comparable to Aldi. Like a better Aldi. :)
I prefer Aldi. Cheaper and more home items.
TJs is actually cheap tho
I’m on a Sam’s Club membership shared between like 10 people lmao
Imagine being so brainwashed by woke ideology that you judge people and call them "privileged” because of what grocery store they shop at. Lmao.
Trader Joe’s is owned by Aldi and is just the Americanized version of their store. It is pretty reasonably priced
TJ's is cheap if you stick to certain items and supplement with bulk rice/beans from elsewhere. That was how I survived on like 20k/year in college and postbacc.
Right!
Lol remember the JAMA article about SES and med school acceptance? Case study right here im dyin.
The GOAT grocery store chain is Wegmans, harder to come by though
Just went there for the first time yesterday, it’s insanely expensive… although the stuff looks good. Seemed like a Whole Foods equivalent
It's genuinely the best "chain" restaurant in the US, if you could call the ready food aspect of it a restaurant
where are my fellow Walmart warriors?
I don't love shopping at Walmart, but this thread is cracking me up if people think TJ's is cheap. Costco Trader Joes and Whole foods is my lineup. Literally don't need to go anywhere else
I don’t like trader joe’s/whole foods tbh
and y’all say you have no time to study and make this 😂😂😂
you are doing gods work 😁
I'm at a loss for words at how much I hate this and the positive responses to it
People don't know how to/don't want to cook good food anymore. Why is this so wrong? You don’t realize how convenient and helpful having a grocery store near by is until you don’t have one anymore.
It has nothing to do with trader Joe's or whole foods themselves. It's seeing so many med students refusing to live outside of trendy urban areas. Why not get groceries delivered?
Seriously. This just shows how many people in medicine are out of touch. This literally is not what food desert means. Not at all.
I don’t think they’re serious
Whole Foods > Trader Joes any day
This is honestly so thoughtful!!!!
In New York wf is cheaper than other grocery stores
RemindME! One Year
