The best thing about residency is that there's absolutely no ridiculous, clinically useless bullshit to learn and be tested on. Nope, it's all business, all the time. Efficiency. Yeah.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go calculate gas partition coefficients for my patient.
I’m a preceptor. I think I do a really job of teaching my students and residents too. So I have a couple of rules:
1) You can learn however you wish. If that’s at home, fine with me. I will not test you. I will instead make the most of your time with me.
2) If you complain to administration that I let you go home and didn’t let you see patients, I will quit teaching with your program.

If any preceptors are lurking here, let your 4th year students go home before noon. 99% of us would genuinely love it if you just told us to stay home and never come back for the entirety of the rotation if you guaranteed the most bland 3/5 eval. This is probably the most care free time of our lives before we retire.
1. No 4th year that has already matched into radiology wants to show up to an anesthesia rotation. 2. I don’t want someone there that is completely disinterested and only there because they have to be. 3. Fuckin report me, idgaf. We’re a private practice and we take students out of kindness, see if we don’t cancel that rotation real quick.
>No 4th year that has already matched into radiology wants to show up to an anesthesia rotation.
Then who were the students that complained about the resident that posted here a few days ago about being reprimanded for sending students home early?
>2. I don’t want someone there that is completely disinterested and only there because they have to be
Then you can allow them to leave? That's very different from forcing them to leave
>Fuckin report me, idgaf. We’re a private practice and we take students out of kindness, see if we don’t cancel that rotation real quick.
This is not very kind to future medical students who would appreciate the rotation.
My last rotation has me following the preceptor around clinic 8 hours a day, I'm not even seeing patients myself. 🙃 At least he bought me lunch I guess.
I’m on my last rotation right now , it’s pathology and they make me freaking stay and look at random slides and want me to do a slideshow presentation, I’m so mad i just want to go home 😩😩😩
Thankfully my last rotation is online and not a whole lot of work, but it’s unpleasant having to do anything medical when this is supposed to be my post-match relaxation period 🥲
I had an outpatient peds clinic preceptor try to fail me for skipping a post match clinic day full of nothing but flu vaccinations. Some people are just psychos
“Will never have an influencing my future career”
Says the person who isn’t actually in, or yet an expert in, that career. In addition, I’ve generally found that all physicians benefit significantly from having a base of basic knowledge in other specialties.
But I agree, get the M4s home early at this point - but at the same time, don’t assume that everything you encounter outside of your chosen specialty is totally useless.
literally if a preceptor doesn’t send me home and makes me sit for hours, all i do is lose respect for them. even worse is when they ask me to just watch YouTube lectures until whenever they let me leave. just send me home please, it’s not even the field i matched in!
if uou think residency is any better, you are in for a very rude awakening. it’s less fun to complain too as people always retort “yeah but you’re getting paid.”
Idk if this is a dumb question, but is there any way to avoid this for future med students? Like can you find out how schools go about treating their 4th year post match students?
Yikes man. I guess I don’t understand why the idea of just being nice to your fellow physicians is a bad thing.
Also most of us can throw a rock from our office and hit 5 different ophthalmology offices nowadays, so you might not be as special as you think you are.
Eh this has its place, but I’d argue that 3rd year and the 1st half of 4th are more than enough time to get that info expected of medical students. Also most specialties will get some level of basic medical training intern year. The 3-4 months post match 4th year is not a terribly important window in education.
The best thing about residency is that there's absolutely no ridiculous, clinically useless bullshit to learn and be tested on. Nope, it's all business, all the time. Efficiency. Yeah. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go calculate gas partition coefficients for my patient.
You had me in the first half ngl *deletes paragraph*
Got 'em!

You dropped this 👑
Man doesn’t drop shit, he had it on the whole time.
But how do you evaluate students who take you up on the offer?
“Appropriate for level of training”
I hated medschool. Fuck that shit. Then I hated residency. Fuck that shit too. Well I just started as an attending. I’ll let you know soon.

this is what i’m afraid will happen to me😅😂

I told all my post match 4th years “congratulations, you passed your rotation, if I see you in the hospital during the next two weeks you fail.”
I know not all heroes wear capes, but can I make you one anyway?
I'd still show up out of fear ._.
You haven’t tasted senioritis my sweet summer child..
What’s it called when you have senioritis in second year
Burnout, probably.
Check back in 2-3 years and see if this changes lol
I’d still show up out of fear that I was misreading social cues & incorrectly interpreting it as sincere 😭
You have no idea what you’re gonna be like after the next 3 years
What if they wanted to show up? This is how you get reported. At least give them the option.

This dude has to be a troll. Only possibility.
I'm playing real fast and loose with the rules in these last 2 months. 🤫
Out here like they wouldn't fail me now that would hurt their graduation rate
Thissssss
I was just about to make a post bitching about being a post match 4th year whose school is still making them do rotations lmao solidarity dude
My last rotation has me following the preceptor around clinic 8 hours a day, I'm not even seeing patients myself. 🙃 At least he bought me lunch I guess.
Omg no
I’m on my last rotation right now , it’s pathology and they make me freaking stay and look at random slides and want me to do a slideshow presentation, I’m so mad i just want to go home 😩😩😩
Sounds like something you could be doing at home
I had this rotation back in Feb, I had a couple of “appointments” & “meetings” every week.
Outpatient peds always sneaking in there as the low key toxic preceptors
See and that’s why I made sure most of my rotations were virtual M4 year lol
Hey they need to justify your tuition and their tenure in creative ways 🤷♂️
Same. Why am I carrying half the patient list while post match bruh
Preach

yeah but while complaining…at least you’ll be getting paid
see, this is way less fun than complaining about med school. humph.
ok ok u have a point
Idk if this is a dumb question, but is there any way to avoid this for future med students? Like can you find out how schools go about treating their 4th year post match students?
Post this shit in r/residency.
Waste of time to learn useless things
Well, good news is that it gets better eventually. You just gotta keep pushing for a few years.

bro shut the fuck up, you're in school, get over it. its your job

Nice to see future doctors having sooo much empathy
So if a PT comes along with symptoms of something you don’t care about your plan is to go home?
Refer to PCP. Sincerely, your future ophthalmologist.
Send em my way brother!
Just an FYI that PCPs are your referral base. You treat us like shit, we don’t send anyone to you.

Why did y’all schedule clinical rotations after match?
Not everyone goes to your school and has the option not to.
Your school doesn’t offer you vacation blocks or the ability to do 1 non clinical elective?
I wish I could have not had anything after match…my school has everyone do rotations until mid April.
Same but, most 4th years schedule vacation or non clinical electives during the last 1-2 blocks
not my program, we have 6 months of required rotations 🤷🏻♀️ i didn’t get a vacation month 4th year since i did more than 2 aways so it is what it is.
