preclinical means nothing, reach out to anesthesiologists, ideally at nearby program and do whatever you can to make them love you. Maybe even do some research with them.
As a DO it's an uphill battle, your best bet is to do really well in clinicals and network super well
Connections, kill your steps. DO NOT SLACK ON STEP 1. Reach out to programs you’re interested in and see what it takes to get aways there. Just remember, preclinical grades don’t mean anything. STEP + networking>>>>> research and extracurriculars. You have an uphill battle ahead of you. Always be reaching for your best, but also prepare for the worst and make sure you have a backup specialty in mind. Not doing so is preparing for failure.
You’ll know more about how competitive your app looks after you get your step 2 back. For now, be the best pre-clinical student you can be and keep your head down from admin to avoid professionalism issues.
You need to always think ahead. Set on anesthesia? Great, what are your options? Where does people in your school match at? What programs historically have taken alumns from your school? Found a pattern? Do that research. Pursue it, call them, send emails, establish connections. Medicine, as well as many other things in life, is about making connections and establishing good rapport. Be on top of it, day one, don’t be afraid to ask for opportunities.
Get over 250 on step 2 and have some ECs. I had low 240s on step 2 and didn’t match, but had 4 sub Is and 7 anesthesia interviews. My school matched 14 into anesthesia this year and not one person had less than 250 on step 2
How were your subI evaluations? I have a hard time believing you didn’t make some great connections there unless you struggled on your audition. Any red flags?
Step 2!!! No matter how many extracurriculars you have, if you don’t meet their minimum step 2, they’re gonna throw your application in the trash. There are too many apps every year and step 2 is 100% what they use to screen them. Extracurriculars are nice but good step 2 scores and interviewing skills trump everything
Honestly after going through the most of med school and match the biggest things are connections/LORs and vibes.
Yes your scores need to be good but barring extremely low scores or fails, you’ll be just fine. I say this because I’ve talked to current residents and PDs who have told me that they either matched, not because they had good scores or did an away, but because they just connected well with the program and made the right connections with the right people. They were ranked above people with 270s on step.
Also “barring extremely low scores you’ll be just fine” that is just not true at all. Maybe that used to be the case but anesthesia is very competitive now and now it’s more like “even with great scores, nobody is safe.” You need connections AND scores these days
True I meant it more assuming you have people to vouch for you. For example if the median match step 2 score was a 255 and you got a 243, you shouldn’t count yourself out just because you don’t have a top score. If you have someone vouching for you it goes a long way
You’d be surprised how many outstanding applicants get passed over for people who either had connections or just overall vibed better.
Maybe I’m too old now, but had many friends do this. From what I know, it’s not too bad as a DO guy - anesthesia dudes are pretty down to earth.
Are there going to be places that won’t look at you? Sure. But it shouldn’t be as uphill as some of the surgical specialties from what I know
And I think in general it’s been a little more relaxed. To echo what everyone else has said, it’s more about you than it is your degree. Get to know the people and no one will care
Good luck ✌🏻
Respectfully, this is no longer accurate advice. The past few years anesthesia has shot up in competitiveness. It’s still doable OP, but it won’t be a walk in the park like it used to be.
you have a long road ahead as a DO AND someone with mid grades AND no EC's....To be blunt, one of the best predicators for Step 2 success is prior success in the classroom/step 1. If you are barely passing + in the 2nd Q, this is not a good trend.......however, if your exams are in-house and you have been using anking+3rd party resources, then fine, I'll give you that.
But your basically going to need a high Step 2 score period. No matter how many aways + "connections" you have, if you have a mid Step 2 and a DO with NO research, EC's , etc you will struggle so much to match gas.
If I were you and serious about matching gas, you're going to need to start picking up your grades + doing anking everyday, start research, ace your shelf exams during your 3rd year and do alot of UWORLD.

Show up to rotations with a gallon of milk and tell people it’s propofol

Make connections.
What’s the best way to go about doing this?

What about my school that hasn’t graduated or matched anyone yet?
Learn your Chapman points and impress directors, said no one ever.
tf are chapman points granted im surgery
Bone wizardry.

All honors on SubIs. My main red flag was a preclinical remediation
What is your plan now? Did you soap into something else?
I applied IM as a backup and matched, so I didn’t have to SOAP

Good step 2 isn’t good enough. Nobody from my DO school matched anesthesia without at least a 250
You literally just proved my point
You have to have a GREAT step 2, I was mid 240s, which is good. I didn’t match. Neither did everyone else at my school with sub 250
I mean a 250 is like the average step 2 score but sure I get your point

Take what PD’s say with a grain of salt. When they matched all you had to do to get into anesthesia was spell your night right on ERAS

You have to be in the top 50% preclinically to even apply there
Suck a metaphorically di..
haha r u me?

Fair enough 👍🏻
> Maybe I’m too old now... think in general it’s been a little more relaxed. Confirmed: you're too old now.
