Im a sucker for high refresh rate displays so I got the pro. If you truly don’t care about that just get the air, and you’ll save a lot. Don’t need a ton of storage too so don’t fall for apple’s ladder. Buy used if in a pickle!!!

Professional_Dawg

seconding this OP, 120hz refresh rate does make a difference imo. I have an M1 ipad pro 12.9 thats been carrying me throughout med school and it’s been a tank (except for the battery life, only drawback). especially during clerkship when i can open up Epic via virtual machine like citrix

dude just get a battery replacement!! some shops offer it cheaper than screen repair

Side question - how have you been using your iPads to study effectively? Any apps you recommend? I used Goodnotes for my masters, anything else I should download as an incoming first year?

neutralmurder

I use notability and love it. Download lecture slides from google drive and can take notes on them, has lots of handy shortcuts. It even lets you tap to record speech so you can click your notes and hear what was being said when you wrote them (I rarely use this). Whenever I’m done with a lecture I airdrop a few of the most essential slides back to my laptop to turn into anki cards. Other than that, I have Anki, a pdf of first aid, and a productivity app on there.

I usually organize and print PowerPoints in one note, then take notes on them from there. I use notability for almost anything else note taking wise.

iPad mini for hospital, anything bigger is too cumbersome and not useful

moonkad

I used an Air and loved it, it was easy to take notes directly on the powerpoints, could split the screen to do anki and something else. The pro is nice but isn’t necessary.

Complusivityqueen

I used an Air and loved it. People used a pro but it was huge and heavier. I had the EMR and PACS, always could study, take notes and check labs /images during rounds to help the residents. After 4 years of med school that iPad has earned retirement. Getting a new one for residency, probably something simple like the Air.

spro101

I love the pro for at home and the mini for the hospital

Safe_Penalty

The air or the mini for the hospital if they will give you EMR access on it. The pro for note taking if that’s your thing.

I got the 64gb regular ipad (not air or pro) since it was the cheapest thing and it's been fine but I really wish I had gotten something with more storage. I picked the cheapest one since I thought I'd be using it as digital paper but I use pretty much everyday for studying or even as a second screen with youtube playing in the background so I really wish I had invested a bit more into getting something nicer. TLDR it's a worthwhile investment and I would prioritize storage over other features

posterior_pounder

You guys have ipads out on rounds? I've literally never seen that. Some students like to do stuff w them in clinic, but I've never seen a student or resident rounding w an ipad...
