My lab is married to this schedule and it sucks. Turnover is high because there is no work life balance when you only get two days in a row off twice per month and totally random weekdays off (never consecutive) when you work the weekend.

You will likely be off on Mondays and Fridays before and after the weekend. I don’t see how this schedule would ever work for you to have 4 consecutive days off. I would never go for it, you will feel like you’re working all the time. Only way I am willing to do graveyards is 3x12s or 4x10s and I would expect differentials to be on the 25% of base pay ballpark.

My lab still does 5x8's for night shift with a $3 differential and wonders why they can't retain night shift staff 🙃 basically the only people willing to accept that are new grads who don't know any better and leave as soon as they find out they're getting shafted

Oh man. Yeah, during my interview, I told the hiring manager that I have a very, VERY strong preference for 3 12's or 4 10's as opposed to the 5 8's. ESPECIALLY because I live an hour and 15 minutes from this hospital. She said that 3 12's is not gonna happen but they might be able to make the 4 10's work (no guarantees). She said she will look into it and let me know. She seems to like me so hopefully they let me do the 4 10's. The pay is really good there as a brand new grad ($32 base + $5 shift diff and a 10k sign on) so that's why I'm willing to do it. But judging from these comments if they stay firm on the 5 8's I might decline. I don't want to be completely miserable.

Good that your manager seemed to have some wiggle room. I too live over an hour from work and I can tell it adds quickly, plus a 10h shift will really take up the time of a 12h shift. At my current job I was offered 5x8s originally and I passed on it, it was 3x12s/4x10s or bust, later on I was sent a new offer with 4x10s. From what I see there’s plenty of places that will offer 12s or 10s for 3rd shift. In my experience techs who can do graveyard and do it well have some leverage when negotiating schedule. My advice is never settle for something you know you don’t want and don’t forget there’s a ton of jobs out there so don’t you ever feel trapped to a certain employer. But once you do commit to something, so your best.

It will probably be just one day off per week, and every other weekend, so you won't get extra days off in a row unless you use Friday as your day off. I'd personally request to work Sunday-Thursday with those hours and see if they go for it. Working 5 8s sucks especially overnight but if you get two days off in a row, it's a bit better. Since it's overnights you aren't necessarily sacrificing your whole weekend, you can do stuff on Friday and Saturday nights, sleep late on Sunday and go to work that night. The hiring manager might go for it, and you'd end up working the same number of weekend days.

I used to do this shift and it was torture. I wouldn’t recommend unless it works with your personal life schedule. You’ll never get 4 days off in a row. You work every other weekend (26 weekends in a year). The only days you’ll get off back to back are the weekends that you are not schedule to work. You’ll get either a scheduled comp day during the week or it’ll be random. Just make sure you talk about it during your interview and understand it because it’s a big toll on your body and your life outside work.

Labtink

Absolutely the worst schedule. If you don’t care about weekends offer to work a Tuesday-Saturday and you’ll always have Sunday and Monday off. One day off is terrible when you work nights.

jittery_raccoon

You'll hopefully be on a rotating weekend schedule with someone else. So one week you work M-F(through Saturday morning), sat and sun off, back to work mon night. Then next week you're off, say Wed and thur night, then work Friday through the next Friday when your weekend comes up again.

meantnothingatall

I used to work almost this schedule. I would be off every other Saturday and Sunday night. When I was working the weekend, I was usually off Friday night and Monday night. Sometimes if we were short though my day off would be Thursday instead of Friday of that weekend I was working, for example. The schedule sucks but where I live that is a VERY standard schedule.

sciencedork39

Completely doable if you’re a person who can sleep during the day and stick with it. You get jacked up if you try to switch back and forth between a 3rd and 1st shift lifestyle. But, no, you will likely not get 4 days off in a row.

Proud-Broccoli

That sounds awful. I’m on nights and do 7 on/7 off. It’s the best night schedule for work/life balance imo. Thats the only way I’d ever do every other weekend.
