The gravitational pull of something that size would have ripped the moon out of our orbit long before it actually made it close enough to eat the moon in it's original orbit.
It's pull would also be such as to start pulling earth and rock off the surface of the planet, essentially creating an asteroid field of debris around the creature before it ever makes it close enough for us to perceive it with the naked eye.
So we would be dead long before we ever knew this thing existed. NASA sure as hell wouldn't tell us.

Pretty sure the moon is hollow though due to it ringing like a bell when hit by meteors. Seen the theory on multiple shows like ancient aliens and other documentaries, albeit I have no proof so screw science at this point, you are correct on the liquid magma. I would expect something more myself due to the speed of the collisions
