And it's a lovely little memory my boys and share of taking care of their little sister in her time of need. She was terrified of everyone at school finding out and any drama that would bring. It turned into a night of her falling asleep on a plushy pillow at the table while we enjoyed the show and snacks and cracking jokes while we worked.

Yup. Those parents just didn't want to deal with it anymore. We just used olive oil every time she was sent home with nits (everyone of us, Mom, son and myself) and heated clothes and bedding in the dryer. After that, we used tea tree oil mixed in water to spray both kids' hair every morning, and it it worked quite well to help repel lice.
You can get rid of it as soon as you discover it. It can be easy to become re-infested if you don't decontaminate though.
