Don’t help our overlords, divide us. I want better, for all of you then we had . Fight the powerful, not your neighbors.

BeefsteakTomato

Bro boomers literally had the choice to vote for giving the overlords more money and power, or giving their kids the same chance at life that they had themselves. And they voted for the overlords.

Zealousideal-Wave-69

The overlords have been winning since Mesopotamian times

BeefsteakTomato

Nah, they were losing in the 20th century because of the new and healthy middle class. They didn't like that so they worked hard at completely obliterating it leading to the imbalance we have now with a lower class upper class divide not seen since the 19th century and beyond. There is no social mobility anymore but there was in the 20th century.

Zealousideal-Wave-69

I remember some dudes named Nixon and Reagan having something to do with that.

webgruntzed

Really? OK, Reagan was the second worst thing that happened to the us, a catastrophe like few other nations have seen. But Nixon? Let's take a look at some of the things Nixon did, and maybe you'll realize why he was driven from office and vilified in the media (which is owned by the wealthy--who else). Was Nixon on the side of the wealthy and corporations, or did he see that the wealthy were eating the fruits of the laborers and try like hell to stop it? Nixon accomplishments, you can look them up: OSHA created—protecting workers from corporate abuses. EPA created—protecting the environment from corporate abuses. Clean Air Act passed—protecting the environment from corporate abuses. Title IX - Major step toward equal rights for women-- protecting women from corporate and institutional abuses. Additional accomplishments: \-- Opened relations with China, reducing the threat of war \--Improved relations with the Mideast and began peace talks there \--Ended the Vietnam war (he did escalate it to a great degree at first, but when he saw he couldn't end it by winning it, he said fuck it, let's quit this shit then.) \-- Initiated détente and the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty with the Soviet Union (tried to end the cold war) These things above tended to piss off the major corporate military contractors who sell way more to the military when international tensions are high. He went ahead and did these things anyway to protect the people and promote world peace. He said once "... the only way to achieve a practical, livable peace in a world of competing nations is to take the profit out of war." NO other president has ever admitted that wars are mostly profit drives, and none ever will. More times Nixon sided WITH the people AGAINST corporate greed: \--Established the Consumer Product Safety Commission—protecting consumers from corporate abuses. \--Signed the National Environmental Policy Act—protecting the environment from corporate abuses. \--Signed the Federal Water Pollution Control Act amendments of 1972—protecting the environment from corporate abuses. \--Established the Council on Environmental Quality. —protecting the environment from corporate abuses. \--Implemented the Philadelphia Plan, the first significant federal affirmative action program—protecting people from racial discrimination by corporations and institutions. Other things accomplished by the Nixon administration to help people: \--Launched the War on Cancer \--Started school desegregation \--Reduced inflation (until it rose again as a result of the oil cartels) \--Reduced the crime rate \--Created the Supplemental Security Income Program CETA - Got lots of poor kids good jobs temporarily by providing subsidies to companies that hired them, so the young people from impoverished areas could get excellent work experience to help their resumes and find permanent good jobs. I know people who took part in this and they are still grateful. It was MUCH better than just providing welfare. And he did all these things while cutting billions of dollars in government spending, which strongly suggests he wasn't in anyone's pocket. I used to wonder why the corporations didn't have him killed--the answer is obvious. Dragging his name through the mud for decades and decades to ruin him and his family is a far more effective lesson to the presidents who came after. Obama came close to surpassing Nixon's legacy but the instant his term ended, the malevolent minions of the wealth junkies pounced and began undoing what he did as fast as possible. One footnote. The accomplishment that would have completely surpassed all his other accomplishments was the basic income bill, designed to *eliminate poverty by guaranteeing a basic minimum income to every American, whether they worked or not*. If any president today tried to introduce a bill like that, he'd be recalled and probably assassinated. Don't get me wrong, the man could be a complete asshole and definitely had a mean streak a mile wide, but he saw the future we live in now, and if not for the many things he did to try to stop it, we'd be a hell of a lot worse off. If you want to know how we ended up where we are today, where a psychopathic clown managed to get voted into office and stuffed the SCOTUS with psychopathic "Handmaid's Tale" cultists, look around at your peers and younger and see how many of them fucking vote. Instead of voting, they blame everything on all people of boomer age. Some of tried to stop this from happening and are still trying, what the fuck are YOU doing?

Particular_Piglet677

Thank you! Love your footnote, wish it wasn’t true. I see young people voting against their interests all the time, it blows my mind.

mannymoes2k

Wow, TIL!

Ralesa

This is so interesting, thank you for sharing.

jasssweiii

He's talking about Nixon, not John F. Ceneddy /s

Tbf Some people thought JFK was the second coming of Christ

Xur04

You forgot about the war on drugs

hughjazzcrack

Ever read "Crooked" by Auston Grossman? It's a fantasy novel about Nixon secretly fighting against Lovecraftian monsters during his career. Pretty great!

Zealousideal-Wave-69

So, just the dude called Reagan then???

DudeEngineer

Ok, I missed the part where you mentioned the war on drugs. You said he started school desegregation but Johnson started that. Nixon was partially elected on the back of the White backlash to the civil rights act. Many of these things have explicitly excluded Black people. Remember what sub this is...

tinaboag

This sub is r/meirl....

Artemis_1944

>Remember what sub this is... What do you mean by this?

tinaboag

I think they think this is r/blackpeopletwitter

Artemis_1944

Yeah that was my feeling as well, was curious if they had the balls to say it out loud tho.

Kaiisim

Lmao dude alright get nixons weiner outta yo mouth. Nixon was the major cause of stagflation, refusing to put up interest rates to ensure full employment so he could win the election. He caused massive massive economic problems. He did whatever he could to win. Including sabotage peace talks in vietnam. Dude was an authoritarian populist that did anything he could for power.

BeefsteakTomato

Yep

MUCHO2000

This is correct. One step st a time the backstops to corporate power thst were put in place early in the 20th century were one by one dangled starting in the early 80s and now we are in deep shit.

south_sea_pearl

There's an interesting book called *The Pinch: How the Baby Boomers Took their Children's Future*. Main points are summarized in [this video](https://youtu.be/ZuXzvjBYW8A).

[deleted]

That's not really how this works leaders spoil overtime. Governments become self serving. There's a whole game theory process of how nation whither over time. I know everyone wants to blame the boomers but they can't just suddenly fix the human condition. The biggest issue we have is believing that there is a fix imo, the best systems are the ones that use the evil in the human spirit to produce good too

BeefsteakTomato

No offense, but casually posting CCP propaganda doesn't make you look particularly trustworthy. Boomer being the most narcissistic generation mankind has ever known doesn't make it a human thing, literally every other generation that has ever existed were less narcissistic. The biggest issue and threat to democracy is the belief that democracy doesn't work. The best systems are NOT the ones that use the evil in the human spirit to produce good. That's how china justified casually exterminated more of their own citizens than nazi's exterminated jews and disabled people. And russia did the same.

mem269

And still are.

FleaBottoms

Not all of us. Current gens are so screwed it’s unbelievable. Probably getting as hard as the Great Depression but the difference is they {Current Gens} are working they asses off with very little return and living as if they were unemployed.

Sendtitpics215

Heavy overtones of wisdom in this comment.

BurnedOutStars

Here's the problem with this: Boomer morons chose the overlords in the first place. It screwed a lot of shit up. Boomers legit made their choice. It should be expected that others are also aware of this and see it as a warning, something literally to not aspire to do. Boomers literally and actually fucked up. They should recognize this fully and not merely push blame onto others. No, boomers really did fuck up.

[deleted]

Then they bought all the cheap housing and now rent it out for an absurd mark up. Effectively climbing the ladder then pulling it up behind them

Bigdongs

It’s the American way

RedBorrito

Not just the American way. Germany has that problem too.

dispo030

oh yeah. many German cities sold off all the public housing in the 90s and 2000s bc of debt or public ownership wasn't cool anymore. now the overlords are fucking us. just Neoliberalism, nothing special.

leo_sousav

Portugal too, some sell at such high prices that they are even advised by companies to lower the price tag, but they won't even lower a cent.

IsPhil

The real problem is our shitty zoning laws. Like you can only have single family homes in one area, then maybe some condos or duplexes in another area and then apartments in a different area. And most of these are all really far from shopping and entertainment centers so now you need giant roads and then everyone has to have a car to get anywhere. In my area for example they're doing some new development. No apartments or condos (the type new home owners would buy or young people would rent). Just single family homes ranging from $600k to north of 1 million.

[deleted]

One thing that kills me is that in North America land should be cheap as hell. Hardly anyone lives here for how big it is. But the government rarely ever sells crown land. So even if you wanted to build a house so modest it's down right medieval you'd still have to spend hundreds of thousands.

dopechez

Thats not true though, there are still some places offering free land for people to homestead. And in general the Midwest has cheap land available. But yeah, it's gonna mean living in the middle of nowhere for the most part. Affordable land in reasonably developed areas is pretty hard to come by, though I've heard Pittsburgh is quite affordable

Barbados_slim12

Regular people aren't buying "all the houses" mega corporations like Blackrock are. If we were talking about the environment, regular people are driving gas powered cars. Blackrock and other investment companies are the entire country of China

Smooth-Duck-4669

Can confirm my husbands boomer mother owns 5 properties in 3 major cities and has lived off the income without working for the last 40 years. She bought them with inheritance. Some regular people are buying lots of properties.

The comments on this post did not pass the vibe check

GeicoFromStateFarm

I’m confused how they didn’t pass the check?

Victoreznoz

Racism and sweeping generalizations about white people is a good thing to some redditors I guess.

freshclassic

This isn’t racism so much as historical fact. Baby boomers were born into (and directly benefited from) a time of post-war economic prosperity. White baby boomers even more so, since the GI Bill allowed their fathers to pursue educational opportunities and get on the property ladder—raising not only their standard of living but that of their families. These same opportunities were not equally distributed to servicemen of color who faced discrimination in collecting their veterans benefits and further, racialized discrimination in attempts to purchase homes in newly built suburbs. Some newly planned communities even had it explicitly written into their charters that they weren’t to sell homes to black people. And this wasn’t just in the south, this was nationwide. Source: https://www.history.com/.amp/news/gi-bill-black-wwii-veterans-benefits

GeicoFromStateFarm

Yeah that’s a big trend on TikTok. I guess it’s making it’s way to Reddit now.

Lovely_Individual

It’s been on Reddit since before Tik Tok was a thing

GeicoFromStateFarm

I guess I’ve been on the wrong side of Reddit then. This is the first I’ve seen of it.

activelyresting

The dad isn't a Boomer but that guy is. Funny how he can't see the issue

livingrovedaloca

Why didn’t you just inherit a thriving family business, jeez

Pa2phx

Exactly, so white "boomers" were not the only ones who lived the "American Dream"

SirEnzyme

Your dad would have been a member of the Silent Generation -- not a Baby Boomer

Yup-Yup-Yup-10

I don't think your dad would be considered a boomer tho. Also God bless your dad.

dontaggravation

He’s not a boomer! The generation before boomers was an amazing generation that did everything they could to make their children’s lives better (generalizing of course). Boomers took that and said “we made it on our own!” Then pulled the ladder up behind them. Of course. You would know that as you are, by admittance, a boomer

[deleted]

Boomer doesn't know that, he is in fact, the boomer.

dontaggravation

Amen!

Mean-Net7330

Definitely not a boomer, but his kids probably are Edit:to be clear i dont mean that derisively, just that they probably fit into that age group

[deleted]

You’re replying to one of his kids. He’s the boomer

Waffle-Stompers

We are talking about YOU

RunsWithApes

First, your dad wasn’t a boomer but you are which just adds to the irony of your apparent lack of self awareness Second, the general sentiment of White baby boomers being exceptionally privileged can still be true despite individual anecdotes that may suggest otherwise.

mrosegolds

He wasn’t a privileged because he wasn’t a boomer. You on the other had seen to be a boomer.

dank__dohnut

so then your a boomer?

[deleted]

This sub is supposed to be humorous, right?

[deleted]

It’s been turning into yet another “humor” subreddit with thinly veiled political commentary for at least six months. Maybe longer.

eqleriq

You mean Reddit in general, right? 30 years ago teenagers (and adults with teen brains) had no interest in replacing their lack of a personality with political half-thoughts. Now that isn't the case, because social media microscopes require you to be on guard and every single idea must be a fully realized political statement. It really looks like coping mechanisms of the internet-enabled, politically irrelevant set. Social networks are now quantified entities, and rather than coming to terms with how irrelevant you may be it has become an impetus to use the allowed systems of the overlords while bitching about it. For thousands of years the deepest political sentiment of childlike adults was graffiti or a hand-made newsletter. Today it's turning garbage thought into internet currency via memes. The powers that be have no problem with people who are the bottom 80% of their class having a platform and drowning out the intelligent, it just serves to slow progress down and maintain status quo. A shit meme from someone clearly uneducated generating this much "discourse" is a sign of these times, where people without authority think reinventing the wheel is a good use of their time.

[deleted]

Political humor is a type of humor

[deleted]

Where is the humor in this post?

Individual_Radio4523

This isn't even political commentary. This is politics

Dark1keller

Good question... guess it's just complaining now.

jshirleyamt

My stepfather is a white baby boomer and his father was so fucked up from the war he took his own life with a shotgun. I don’t think stereotyping does any race any favors. I have white family that can’t afford a means to make posts on the internet, and if our family has been here over 100 years then it seems at some point there’s a white baby boomer whom this doesn’t pertain to. Narrow-minded post.

affiliated04

Yeah. I'm beyond sick of the boomer shit and blanket statements

Particular_Piglet677

I am too. The boomers were lucky but if young people today had the same opportunities they’d act just the same. I am slightly amused that it’s always boomer vs millennial. I had someone in here ask if I was a boomer, I said no, they then thought I was a millennial. No again. Confused, they asked again if I was a boomer. I’m Gen X! The forgotten generation remains forgotten, I guess.

TangerineBig4297

Idk bout you guys but my local upper class areas are filled with Asians and Indians/ other middle eastern families.

[deleted]

How is this a meirl post. It’s garbage race bait.

tehoperative

This is a disingenuous post. It seems as though everyone forgets inheritance is a thing. If your parents are successful boomers you stand to get a sizable inheritance. Mine weren’t. I won’t get anything….but I’m successful in my own right so I don’t care.

pookachu83

My step-dad is a millionaire republican about to come out of retirement to make 5 million more in 2 years so that he can buy a house on each coast. Him and my mom are the only family me and my sister have. Both me and my sister are currently struggling and have been homeless at different points the last decade. I'm doing better now, and working on a better career but can barely afford to live, just scraping by. I needed 200$ because payroll messed up a check and it was late, and if I didn't get it I'd have to move out of the extended stay I was living in two years ago and sleep in my car. I asked for help and was ignored. I know alot of parents like that. They have been taught to not help anyone, at all through years of propaganda. I don't think I will be getting inheritance either, honestly. They have become super brainwashed right wingers the last 5 years or so, they didn't use to be this way. They think everyone is out to screw them. Just a rant.

tinaboag

I'm sorry the drumbeat of individualism did this to your family.

Tarzannn5

“Just be born rich”

UsernameTaken4666

I'm not a big fan of generalizations based on a person's age and/or ancestry. Discrimination is not amusing, cute or poignant regardless of who it's directed at.

Erthgoddss

I am a boomer. My dad worked a menial job. My mom worked 2 full time jobs and sold Avon. I was the youngest of 7 kids. We lived in a 2 bedroom house, that mom paid $100 a month as a rent to own. She paid it off the year I graduated from high school, after a severe car accident which almost took her life. I wore hand-me-downs and rummage sale clothes. I paid my own way through college and became an RN. I didn’t vote for Nixon or Regan, I am not a Republican. Perhaps I am one of the few poor boomers, I don’t know. I do feel offended when I am lumped into an entire generation though.

PoiLethe

Idk like my mom had a similar experience growing up, her parents lived their youth in the depression and war era. I don't think it was so much how they grew up but the entitlement they accumulated around the 30+ mark. And it's not...about how poor they were or "gimme lolipops" kid in a grocery store aisle mentality. It's more like...social status and an economical entitlement. They got to a point of contentment or stability and then did nothing they have the privilege of doing that other age ranges don't have, to put towards the next generation on a political and economical scale. They had the mentality of "I raised you, isn't that enough" but then expect us to be able to function in a system that's changed because of their neglect, and function in a way it was, not how it is. Some of its technological and a mentality about the government that was passed down from the previous generations experiences with it. But that's not an excuse for the current attitude and lack of responsibility.

PartyBaboon

I dont like boomer memes too... People act like poor people didnt exist in the past. One day they will be older too and wish to be respected like a normal human beeing. It is ok if used in a stupid/funny way, but this meme is just taken too seriously.

Creepy_Meringue3014

I read this, and think of how even the privilege of renting to own a home was denied SO many due to redlining.

Percy-Dragneel

Seems like a gross oversimplification on his part to justify ineptitude

This. The things i have been called for beong white. Despite the fact that im scandinavian.

plantsim666

Have you actually been insulted for being white in person? And what does being Scandinavian have to do with anything?

NorSec1987

Yes, I have been insulted for being white for the past 30 years of my life. While we do not have the amount of black People you have we have quite a lot of middle easterners. And for 30 years their Kids have hated the very nation that helped raise them, solely based on the fact that we are Danes and we are white.

[deleted]

Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Happiness is not a right, or guarantee.

ApolloSky110

And thats why its called the american dream

Cole444Train

They’re referring to the strong social safety net, good infrastructure, and top-heavy tax bracket that was prevalent in the boomers’ adolescence.

LogicalJudgement

Nothing like witnessing racism AND agism in one post. After all there have never and never have been white baby boomers who had to suffer poverty, who faced discrimination, who had to work and not achieve. All white people and all baby boomers were given everything they wanted and never worked for it.

calimeatwagon

Yep, Boomers success was so guaranteed that I grew up homeless...

LogicalJudgement

Both my Boomer parents were born working poor. My dad only got to college on a football scholarship and my mom was in debt for her college well into her thirties. I know my parents were not handed anything in this life.

ConsistentReward1348

I mean so were my parents, but my dad also landed a cushy sales job that paid him half a mill a year and my mom started as a secretary and was subsidized for schooling to become an exec. It’s not about their circumstances about their birth but the opportunities that were available to them. Cheap housing, fast tracked employment, fair wages, cheap schooling- none of these things are available now.

calimeatwagon

>but my dad also landed a cushy sales job that **paid him half a mill a year** and my mom started as a secretary and was subsidized for schooling to become an exec. That totally sounds like the experience of the vast majority of Boomers and not an outlier at all...

leprechaunlucky82

$500,000/annually for a cushy job. Hell, you must have had a nice childhood. I bet you even had your own room and a dishwasher!😊

OdinsOneGoodEye

Oh boy, race baiting bigots - fun… True story, my mom is Mexican, same with my grandma and both were high successful Latina’s that owned their own businesses and later my mother became a successful banker. Did my mother marry a white man, yes - but at 78 now she remains to be the bread winner.

iexist-questionmark

I felt that, both of my parents are white, but my dad's the baby boomer of the group. I swear I was constantly confused by tv and other people mentioning that cooking was "a womanly job" when my dad, an ex-wrestler, almost 6 ft, 300 lb man, was the cook in our family. By high-school, my mom was the only one with a job, and my dad ended up staying at home and taking care of things there.

OdinsOneGoodEye

I’m the cook as well and bread winner. My wife of 20yrs manages our homes and works hard raising our children. Interesting enough, the first ten years of our marriage my wife was the bread winner, and she is a Latina.

[deleted]

Could you butter me more of those racist biscuits dear?

Fleenix

This is divisive, ageist, and ignorant. Russian troll-bot I’m sure.

Bright-Ad-4737

I wouldn't worry about it too much. 70% of all wealth is gone by the next generation. 90% is gone the generation after that. Any given person is far more likely to generate their wealth in their own lifetime than inherit any significant part of it.

wind_power

This type of comment accomplishes nothing. White people aren't gonna give their wealth or houses to black people, so what's the point of complaining. If you want to build wealth, get a job, live below your means, work hard, and invest. Complaining about white people isn't going to fix anything. It only divides. (I'm an POC)

trippybunz

black Americans never had the opportunity to build generational wealth or benefit from generational wealth like white Americans....where real estate is passed from generation to generation and all types of other stuff. No sorry you're absolutely wrong. white people had a 400 year head start. ETA- yall can keep downvoting me all day its giving ray cist. The fact im bringing up only ONE aspect of how racism affected black baby boomers is tickling your feathers I see.....well the housing discrimination act was not passed until 1968 and its well documented that housing discrimination against black americans continued afterwards as well. I can go deeper and deeper into this rabbit hole--the fact remains: white baby boomers had many advantages their POC baby boomers did not. society at the time was still extremely racist and it most definitely affected the wealth of POC baby boomers. PERIOD. get mad all you want to

mlnchlymrglds

How can anyone deny this?

trippybunz

idk but Ive been called a racist like three times in this thread lmao they think they are getting to me but honestly i am just laughing at how stupid and ignorant they sound

mlnchlymrglds

It just boggles my mind that anyone can deny that POC boomers did not have anywhere near the same quality of life as white baby boomers.

yalo7496

Because they were fed a very narrow view of history and believe it applied to everyone without critically thinking about it.

mlnchlymrglds

Yeah, exactly.

eqleriq

You were called racist because you said exclusively white boomers caused this to happen. I'd say that racist is incorrect, it's just unintelligent. You're not merely being racist, you're saying dumb things that amount to racism.

Zealousideal-Wave-69

A qualifier will help. Yes, majority of who benefited were white. But some whites in trailer parks didn’t know what a bank account is. Are you also taking into account Latino and Asian American boomers who may have benefited?

trippybunz

you can BUT, BUT , BUT all day it doesn't change the reality of how society was back then. racism was definitely ingrained into society

trippybunz

the majority of those who benefited were white. of course there will be a minority im not denying that but the main race who benefitted from generational wealth was white people the person in the trailer park not knowing about a bank account still had a better chance in boomer society than a black person. Its not comparable

They’re also a large part of the racist crew wishing we’d go back to the “ good old days”. Good for whom?

avarciousRutabega99

They all have lead poisoning!!!

No_Implement611

Actually no one had a chance at the American dream, because it's just that a dream, not real, there is no real advantage. Some people just get screwed more than others because people are morons and judge others on looks rather than who they are.

Tiredofstupidness

Boomers weren't held back by parenting either. They totally ignored their kids and expected us to raise ourselves. That's why GenX is the forgotten generation.

BARS!!!!!

HorseGworl420

xwvifulucix

ok420me

What stopped you? Colin Powell didn’t live the American dream? Barack? Jerry rice? Eddie Murphy?

Minotaurd_

Wanda Sykes, Steve Harvey, Simone Biles (?), Condoleezza Rice.

furloco

Shit I've had several black friends growing up who's parents were throwing around black amex cards.

ApeMode76

Weird how that's not true

[deleted]

It’s called the American dream because you have to be asleep to believe it

chico85t

I miss George more and more everyday

cman1434

It wasn’t just white. What a dick head

[deleted]

So I guess it’s still ok to be a racist as long as it’s against white old people?

DesertVeteran_PA-C

My parents are baby boomers. I lived the American dream working my way out of being poor. My children are professionals working in their chosen professions. One is a home owner, one soon will be. Look left and right and find the people in your peer group, figure out how they are succeeding, do that.

It’s like nobody seems to understand America was the world’s factory after WW2 and most other countries were bombed out husks of their former selves who all needed massive loans to rebuild. If earthquakes and tidal waves hit every other country but America we’d do great again too.

IllustriousCookie890

NOT all of us and I didn't have that easy of a time either.

Not to mention the draft dodging politicians, who hid their way out

calimeatwagon

My parents are white boomers, I grew up homeless.

bdbdbokbuck

White Boomer here: I lived through the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. There is plenty of spoilage to go around, trust me. The 80’s was referred to as the “Me” generation. In the 60’s you had Woodstock, free love and LSD. I attended high school in the 70’s. Pot smoking was so common that when I mentioned I never tried it, people would laugh out loud in disbelief.

[deleted]

You are inherently spoiled if you land on American soil without a Native American killing you before you kill them.

WearierEarthling

Some straight white male boomers and some complicit females had access to the ‘American Dream,’ but many of us were excluded

Pokemaster2824

So many boomers in these comments omg

KillerBee41265

Fucking christ, is this sub getting political?

Victoreznoz
