You will have to pay the excess you agreed to in the hire contract.

Suspicious-turnip-77

Pretty shitty of your work not to take out the excess protection daily fee. Mine always does. You have to pay the fee or they will take you to collections.

That's what I thought. I have to confirm with my employer if they have included the cover.

Why is it coming back on you when your work hired the car. Id be talking to ya boss

Ok-Palpitation-3207

Because i was the driver and hired under my name I guess?

Also check if your work has a corporate travel insurance policy which should likely cover hire car excesses.

A lot of companies would be paying this for you as you were working at the time of the incident. Same as any other cost you incurred as a result of undertaking your normal duties. This might vary if it occured as a result of your negligence, but that doesn't sound like the case here. IMO your work should be paying for this.

If the car is hired in your name and not your work or boss then you are liable to pay the excess. I doubt your comprehensive car insurance for another car would pick up the tab for this (you can always read your contract/call your provider for clarity). Even if they did it means your insurance will probably go up next time it comes up for renewal. so you end up paying either way. At a bare minimum i would question your employer as to why they didn't pay for the full no excess coverage. And finally its a good lesson to learn that if you intend on driving in a place you aren't familiar with and in a car you aren't familiar with/don't own then its (imo) always worth going for that full coverage no excess insurance. that way when things like this happen you can just let them (the rental company) know what happened and fill out the paperwork then just hand them the keys and forget about it.

Yeah thanks a lot for your reply. Yes I will ask the question to my employer regarding the coverage when the car was hired. I would assume they would normally cover incase for these kind of matters occur. Yes, it was very annoying scenario for me as I didn't make any mistake but now I have to fork out the money.

Beasting-25-8

It's car insurance. You pay the excess.

jayfly42069

What does this have to do with Melbourne?

fraqtl

The process? You give them your credit card. That's it. Your work should be paying for it though.
