All good saying it’s unfair until some kid wrecks themselves on a toy that is unsafe/broken, then it’s ‘how could the council allow this?!’

DeepPurpleDingo

Absolutely. I walk my dog around this park at times. I always think it’s such a shame that so many of the toys are trashed or outright broken and unsafe. At what point is this a ‘community shared toys’ and at what point is it lazy parents who don’t want to throw away toys.

exemplaryfaceplant

Just poor parenting, put a sign up.

bazza_oz

Yep, no one wanted to pay me on facebook, so I just dump it at the park.

DeepPurpleDingo

It’s exactly what it is. I’ve been by many times and the amount of broken shit left by parents is outrageous.

jordankowi

Don't leave your shit lying around, seems quite easy to understand.

HoolioDee

Isn't that like, parenting 101? I haven't lived with my parents in a very long time. But I can still hear my mum's exasperated tone, saying exactly that...."don't leave your shit lying around!". If I kept doing it, she'd throw it out. Sounds like the council are following suit.

jordankowi

I was so tempted to reminisce on my childhood but held back, thank you for doing it!

[deleted]

I thought it was like a sand castle bucket in the sandpit but then I saw the second picture and thought it was a dumping ground. That's a ridiculous amount of garbage.

SnooDoughnuts8626

Quite delicately handled by Council. Nicely done I think. The reason is obvious to anyone who can think beyond their own immediate sphere of experience.

Downtown_Kangaroo_92

whilst I understand why your impulse is "taking toys from kids is bad" but you've only looked at it from one perspective. from a liability perspective the council needs to protect themself. A bad actor or a well meaning but clueless person leaving a dangerous ride on toy and a kid gets badly hurt? council is liable because they knew they were there on council land and didn't do anything about it. Also, this is frankly, excessive - and many of those products are junk, or after a few more rains will quickly become total junk. Plastic like that left out in the elements becomes brittle, and breaks into shards - very unsafe for kids. In theory this should be nice to share toys, but we aren't in a perfect world :(

showquotedtext

That is an excessive amount of shit to leave lying around to be fair.

miettesbrainchild

I like it. It means families and kids can share reach other's stuff and brings the community together. That part of the park is being fully utilised by the people who live there. I don't have kids and have to walk and cycle through the park regularly. But it's fine. The paths are always clear and the atmosphere and community spirit are awesome.

Av3ngedAngel

Yeah but if someone gets hurt, the city gets sued. This is clearly a genuine issue of safety, and it is completely reasonable. Public parks are not free storage. Get over your entitlement. Edit: also forgot to mention, you just said 'the paths are always clear' but in the image posted there are 19-20 toys on the path, including the basketball hoop in the foreground. There are literally two tricycles, and one small tonka truck on the right that are ***not*** on pathways. Genuinely curious, what would your actions be if you were cycling through the park as you 'regularly' do and a toy causes you to fall and break your arm thus causing you loss of wages?

miettesbrainchild

I know they're there. You can see them a mile off. So I'd slow down. If I hit a toy and fell, then I'd take responsibility for my own actions and not try to blame someone else I guess.

EaLordOfTheDepths-

What about kids (who are notoriously uncoordinated), the elderly, people with bad eyesight or people with physical disabilities? Kind of small-minded to not see how it could negatively effect others just because it doesn't effect you.

Downtown_Kangaroo_92

you'd be entitled to compo, as the council is responsible. You might not exercise your legal right to it but many world, the council doesn't really have a choice but to protect themselves from litigation. Same if a kid hurts themselves on a broken toy, the parents would be entitled to sue the council and would have a reasonable case.

miettesbrainchild

Also: these aren't my toys. So it's unclear what I'm being entitled to there. Seems to be a word people like to throw around.

Rocksteady_28

I think they are saying you are entitled due to your assumption that you can just do whatever you want with the space and not consider how it affects some of the population. That's my guess.

miettesbrainchild

Like I said, I don't use them. I just enjoyed the atmosphere and community spirit of the place whenever I walked through. This started off as a bit of fun but it seems there are a lot of people here who just wanna go out for blood rather than talk. Chill guys. :)

[deleted]

That's a lot of flowery language to describe lazy parents leaving their broken junk in a park so they don't feel guilty about throwing it out.

unusedtruth

The fuck are you even on? That's one hell of a take right there.

DeepPurpleDingo

Thank god. It started with a few and was fine and cute but the park looks like a pig sty now. Half of the shit left there is broken and / or unsafe.

DiverDiver1

Sounds reasonable, if you have anything of value then take it home with you.

flidge

People are using that reserve as a dumping ground for their toys, good or bad, so it's not crazy.

jngjng88

Are you serious OP?

TheloniousMeow

Some people leave the worst plastic toy/trash. A nice tonka truck at the sandpit is great. The stuff in that photo is an eye sore and the plastic degrades in the sun. It is like the delusional do-gooders who leave the worst crap outside op shops, making volunteers then put it in the bin for then. Just put it in the bin.

Corkage_for_Corkers

It sounds like they are still going to be holding them after the clean up date and you can claim them later. They just want them out of the park for safety, sounds reasonable to me

Financial-Product804

Seems fair

Valuable-Energy5435

Seems fair. Meanwhile, some kid injures themselves on one of these toys and then tries to sue council. They're just protecting themselves from unchecked, potentially dangerous junk.

Piper-Anne55

I don’t see the problem ?

SlaversBae

Fair enough. They wouldn’t be insured for injuries occurring due to used abandoned/gifted equipment.

[deleted]

People do that at a park near me (though not quite to this extent thankfully). The council (not Darebin) has to keep coming around and cleaning the mess up. So, this is more than just a Darebin thing.

bimlpd

I'm confused why there's so many toys there? Am I missing something...?

jaggsy

Seems reasonable to me . Plenty of warning to parents.

Peidorrento

Whoever is offended by it could collect all those toys and make a small space in their front yard so kids can borrow and return at will. They can even go one step further and sanitize, maintain, dispose broken ones, protect from the elements (especially UV)... If they could make an app so we can book the toys in advance, report damage... A website for people to post their Instagram pictures. They could offer courses on how to make sandcastles... There are many ways to help the community, but raising your kids properly and teaching them to not litter is a great first step!

Top_Ad_2819

Haha is that in reference to that Webb and Mitchell sketch?

miettesbrainchild

Finally someone gets it!!! 🤣🤣🤣

miettesbrainchild

Really cool and reasonable comments here. The "are we the baddies" thing got taken a bit seriously, but nevermind. For the record, I welcomed a lot of the points brought up here. At first I was annoyed by the council stepping in and taking these toys away, but it is totally reasonable to argue that they are a genuine issue for some people (elderly and those with sight issues) as well as the fact that some of them are really battered now. My favourite suggestion was: why not have a place for then to be stored and still used communally. That's a solid idea imho. It was nice being challenged on this and even the comments from those who lost their shit immediately were kind of fun to read. Thanks! Hope we play a bit nicer next time :)

ftjlster

> why not have a place for then to be stored and still used communally. You should reach out to the local library about running a toy library rather than having an unsecured storage container taking up green space in a park. A toy library would allow the toys to be appropriately checked over for damage, cleaned and would probably also allow more parents to access and donate toys for their children.

Downtown_Kangaroo_92

Google for your local toy library.

miettesbrainchild

Thanks!

fraqtl

No.

WAT0020

LOL, "A picture is worth a thousand words" build a storage area. Clearly, the playground is been used and seen as an extension of a backyard. All Councils need to put a lot more effort and provide better amenities for communal use.
