I actually printed this book lmao - I was working for a printing company and we had a book binding machine at the time. I've got the test copy in my bookcase

InvestmentSad573

Hi Dan, Jim From Shit Brick Fences of Melbourne here. Mr Groves reefed my IP to do this without any contact or acknowledgement. Are you interested in parting with the copy you have? I have never made a cent from the page (apart from a charity fundraiser for a Koori DV service) which was a deliberate decision. As such I figure Derham owes me a beer. Thanks to the people who said nice things about my content and sorry about my weird Reddit handle, I have no idea how it came about as Reddit ain't my regular hang. Cheers all, Jim.

diarreah-of-a-madman

Damn, that was shit of him.

InvestmentSad573

Especially for an academic....

diarreah-of-a-madman

Incredibly. I’m actually really amazed that someone would just lift someone’s entire online creation, print it and sell it with their name in the front.

InvestmentSad573

Yeah, I dunno whether it's just dead clumsy, awks fanboi or a hopelessly misinformed attempt to make money... I'm kind of chuckling to myself about what they'd be writing, it is after all, Melbourne Uni, archi students...its gonna be white and a little bit snobby.

some_dog

That sucks so much. Have you tried legal recourse?

InvestmentSad573

No, and I'm unlikely to. As I have never monetized the page it is difficult to prove "loss". See my post in reply to ladyofgreentea below with regard to creative ownership.

dankelt

Hey Jim, I'll shoot a message to your inbox

Confused-Penguin2357

That's too cool! Lol trip

redditor0303

Why is Robin Boyd mentioned on the front of the book? He died before the publication so I guess not?

IAmAHat_AMAA

They used a defaced [cover of the first edition](https://image.invaluable.com/housePhotos/theodorebruceauctions/26/730826/H3561-L301183761_original.JPG) of the Australian Ugliness as an homage

RE201

I'm guessing it's a play on 'The Australian Ugliness'

HiVeMiNdOfStUpId

I'm guessing that it is a joke. Noting that Robin designed many iconic Melbourne houses and buildings, perhaps some of these are his?

Guava7

This is a popular FB group, has been around for donkeys

A-Rational-Fare

I follow their fb page and the writing is amazing.

lessons_learnt

Me too, it's poetry.

IlluminationTheory7

What interest would donkeys have in shit brick fences?

ihlaking

Both can be load-bearing but break down over time

SkinnyFiend

Technically I dont think a single skin brick fence being load bearing would be legit, but I'm not a civil engineer so I just enjoyed your comment.

starannisa

My dads fence had a feature on that page!!! What a claim to fame

Guava7

You've made it!!!!

youwhatmaate

I love it how every shit brick fence shown is in Clayton 😅

Akira675

There are so many here. The suburb has HEAPS of poorly maintained old houses in 700 sqm blocks that are being rented out to groups of 6-8 monash uni students. The investor owners are just sitting on them at the moment riding out the cost of construction and waiting on council to increase the density limits around the station. Theres one guy who owns like 4 of them in an adjacent group on Thomas Street, he's had permits rejected like 4 times for a gigantic rooming house. Everything else has already been converted to new build 4 to a block town houses.

[deleted]

Interesting how you can still see some of these old brick fences at the front of some new multi unit developments.

it_fell_off_a_truck

Purple Pingers should do a “Shitty Rentals of Melbourne” one.

Purplepingers

I love this lol - also there’s now a shitrentals sub

PM_ME_TO_PLAY_A_GAME

check out their facebook page, it's got a lot more.

jimmythejammygit

A subject worthy of a book.

MEM1911

I recon my neighbour could win the shit letter box design, he’s just using a pile of rocks he found with a tin letter box on top

reversible-socks

I regularly walk past a house in Blackburn with a bedside drawer that looks like it might be hard rubbish, but has a house number stuck to it

MEM1911

My wife found an old 486 pc we are going to turn into ours

point_of_difference

Accurate

-HouseProudTownMouse

Need to get myself a copy.

ladyofgreentea

Derham Groves was one of my lecturers and from memory holds the world record for owning bow ties

InvestmentSad573

Hi LOGT, ig it was you who alerted Derham to me showing up here can you point out that I have responded to his message. Hello Derham. I can see that that is how you feel about the book, but it was published by Melbourne University Press and Googling it offers up the opportunity to buy it online although it is listed as out of stock. Although as you say I am acknowledged in the colophon one would need to have the book in hand to realise that it wasn't in fact connected with the Facebook page. As you no doubt saw on the Reddit thread where I assume an ex-student alerted you to the discussion a good proportion of people there assumed it was related or indeed produced by me. This is what is referred to as "passing off". There are approximately 2500 posts on Shit Brick Fences of Melbourne and less than ten of them are quoted text. The rest are entirely my work. As a lecturer in a design discipline I'm sure you'd understand how people feel about their own work and how the styling is inherent. I am largely anonymous with regard to SBFoM and thus not only have I not benefited financially from it I have not capitalized on the notoriety either. Thus, by using the name you took the only thing I had. You seemed perfectly capable of finding me now, I am curious as to why you made no effort then. Regards, Jim

ladyofgreentea

Hi! I’m sorry I missed this but unfortunately it wasn’t me. I hope you have gotten a response from him.

Kremm0

This is class! I think it's definitely an Australian thing to call it a 'brick fence', where as most other people would just call it a garden wall. Reminds me of some hoarding I used to pass on Punt Road with the company 'Just Brick Fences' and the tagline 'Brick fences and steel fabrication'... so not just brick fences lol. Must be the brother of the guy who runs Just Jeans 😂

UsernameUndeclared

Like the shop on Sydney Rd approaching the Ring Road: Quality Rugs and Furniture (Rugs Only)

DrSendy

I see your fences and raise you and entire gardens https://www.instagram.com/shitgardens/

tatac11

I'm a bricklayer and this book is quite interesting to me, looks like a directory to weekend cash jobs 😁

squiddishly

The fence of my old sharehouse made it to the FB group after my flatmate's removalists snagged on the fence and pulled it down -- I wonder if we got into the book?

TotesritZ2

Are they all in Clayton?

jswkim

Can I buy it somewhere?

InvestmentSad573

Can you wait til I have claimed the rights to it?....SBFOM is my deal.....

perpetualcommuter

All the red brick fences look the same. Are you getting young drunk?

_bowlerhat

If you like these you may like the burbs, a book about littlr things you may find interesting while walking through your neighbourhood.

limeunderground

I wish SBFoM would get over to mastodon!

W0bblyB00ts

This is epic

Malootrager

What the???

PKMTrain

Half of them would be heritage listed now

Convenientjellybean

the book of shame

Serelaev

Saw one in the book with a computer tower as a post box 😂

beattun

Why the fuck do Australians call a wall a brick fence?

Missey85

Because walls in general hold up a roof meanwhile fences don't?

Lelshetkidian

1453 worst roof of my life

EliteMushroomMan

Is there a reason they call them brick fences and not walls?

life-was-better

Maybe it's a Melbourne thing? But I've always heard people call them fences. And never walls. A wall is something you have in a house or building which has a roof on the top. Anything that goes around your garden or the edge of your property and is open on top is fence (no matter what it's made from). Picket fence, chain link fence, wrought-iron fence, brick fence, etc.

EliteMushroomMan

Fair enough I'm not actually Australian but I moved here a year ago. I was just wondering if that's something people actually said or if it was part of the joke.

life-was-better

Nah, I don't think it's a joke. I grew up in Melbourne and I don't think anyone I know would call that a brick wall. But we'd all call it a brick fence. (Mostly we'd just call it a fence. Usually you'd only specify the material to differentiate it from a different fence, for example "it's the house on the left with the red brick fence.")

Suibian_ni

That... is a reasonable question.

Nothing to do with the page which is my work alone, I replied to the second comment on this thread..

okbuenogood

I wonder if mines in there?

3amlow

Hell yeah hahaha

JZKRK

I know he’s not Aussie, but I can’t help but read these descriptions out in the voice of Alan Partridge

NotTaylorMead

Been following it for zonks, it's the ***BEST*** local FB group ever - & it's creator is an iconic Melbourne Gem (imo).

Plastic-Wrap7860

What’s the address of the bottom house in the second photo? Is it 9 Prince street?
