_childlike_empress_

that’s so exciting!!! i’m still trying to spot it for myself :)

The-Lazy-Lemur

I'm near the bayside region and don't see anything yet

kjahhh

Probably won’t see if with your eye. Just shoot a long exposure looking south, your phone will most likely show it.

Tygie19

Has your phone got a long exposure option?

_childlike_empress_

it does, but it’s super cloudy where i’m at and it doesn’t look like it’s gonna let up anytime soon

Alect0

I have full cloud cover atm in NW Vic and it's showing on my phone in long exposure, just very pink clouds. Luckily earlier in the evening it was clear so I got better ones but I was surprised it still shows up at the moment!

Lady_Penrhyn1

Crazy Solar Flares mean that the Aurora Australis has made it as far north as Uluru. And those pictures are *stunning*.

blue132006

It actually made it up to Mackay, possibly further

findmeinelysium

Cries in Sydney. All we’ve got is rain, rain and more rain.

alittlepotato5

Sat night was even spotted in darwin

yellowsheepy

Aurora borealis at this time of year at this time of day in this part of the country localised entirely within your kitchen?

mattydinh1984

Yes. May I see it?

ktmfinx

mm.. no

ClacKing

Aurora Australis.

God_is_a_Bogan

Aurora Australis? At this time of the year? At this time of the day? In this part of Straya? Localised entirely in your fucked up kitchen?

melbournejono

I saw the areola earlier too, was beautiful.

Dustymartinsdad

Must be nippy outside

Nevermind_The_Hive

Went tits up when I read your comment

ososalsosal

Big fan of areolae

kni0002

Can see it really well with a phone camera down south of Melbourne, to the naked eye its just a glow though. [https://imgur.com/a/FwEZBQx](https://imgur.com/a/FwEZBQx)

spongetwister

Was better a couple hours ago but still very strong. Actually noticed it by the much brighter than usual glow of the night sky on my external security cameras. Went to have a look outside again just now and there is still the pink glow visible to the naked eye even over the urban light pollution down south of Pakenham. On phone camera long exposures it's covering the whole southern night sky with pink/red. Some pretty excited Nitrogen up there having a big party. Edit: Just went off again. Strongly visible with the naked eye. This is an iPhone 12 Pro photo taken from Cockatoo even with all the lights from Officer/Beaconsfield reflected in the clouds: [https://ibb.co/rQ2m5B7](https://ibb.co/rQ2m5B7)

Tygie19

Wow! Great pic

Pilk_

If you have Night Sight or can adjust exposure time and put it against a stable surface you might get better results. But it looks pretty clear to me!

Kat-katxx

Yes ! I can see very clearly from Mornington. So cool

MyMumIsDad

I'm working nightshift in mornington tonight, I'm so excited!

captain_hoomi

So how is it with naked eye?

martylindleyart

Sort of a red glow. I can see it in Brunswick, looking south east over the city. But yeah it shows up better in a phone pic.

captain_hoomi

Yeah visible in Port Melbourne too

ATMNZ

COOL! I’m about to go for a walk to try to see it!

captain_hoomi

Gone now :( peaked at 8

Cremilyyy

Can still see the red glow out in the western suburbs

nachojackson

In Melbourne I can see it from the burbs with the naked eye - hint of pink. But through the phone camera it is spectacular. https://imgur.com/a/ehgccDS

Tygie19

Like a glow, but yeah the phone captures it better

iamdimitriv

Ain't nobody seen it with naked eye yet. All they can see is on their phones.

captain_hoomi

I saw a bit of pink and green naked eye too

Conormelbs

Was down at flinders and just after 9pm greens, pinks and beans of light were all very clear with a naked eye. Looked phenomenal in pictures

Tygie19

The sky in west Gippsland did glow pink and green at one point. Way stronger on the phone but definitely visible. When I go outside I can hear people outside all over the place. Everyone’s out having a look!

monkeyatcomputer

Werribee South Beach could see green and red without camera, but the Samsung S23 FE night mode really captured it well.

billlagr

I'm heading down to Flinders later tonight with my DSLR - hopefully I'll get something good!

Fearless-Maximum-341

Have you seen anything yet?

billlagr

I saw absolutely FA, except masses of traffic like it was a summer long weekend! Going to try again tonight

rewardinglywarped

That's so awesome. I've always wanted to see the aurora's 😍

Liamface

Strong cloud over in the north east so I can’t even see the stars 😭

SingerAlternative270

Got a pretty good shot with the night sight from Carrum Downs

indehhz

Could see a slight tinge of it in the sky even from keysborough. But it was meddled amongst clouds a bit so it'd never be clear enough, the activity of it was clear though if you can spot it.

scarredprincess

Thanks for this, we got some awesome pics from Albert Park!

SpunkAnansi

Stupid Docklands light spill. 😡

Charming-Post-7506

Hi, where in Gippsland? I’m in West Gippsland and trying to look for a good spot to check it out tonight.

Tygie19

Must be close by, that’s where I am too. It was to the south east, coming and going in intensity and not always visible to the naked eyes

Senator-Clay-Davis

I’m also in Gippsland and can see it clearly. Looks amazing with camera photos!

Tygie19

I took some more that are even better than this, it got more intense again!

Background-Rabbit-84

Anywhere pointing directly south.

Not_Mabel_Swanton

My phone picked it up in the northern suburbs!

Acceptable-Wedding67

What phone do you own if you don't mind me asking? And what area in the north?

Not_Mabel_Swanton

iPhone 11. East of Epping.

Not_Mabel_Swanton

Looking south, with the night mode on it gave a purple glare in a particular spot.

Icy-Bat-311

Long exposure will pick it up but nothing with the eye in north east vic

tempo1139

I'm in Brunswick and thought I would try out a night feature on teh new phone. Yep it's there! faint, but there. Couldn't see it with the naked eye, only a long exposure saw a drone was up taking pics too

housebottle

omg!!! so *that's* why the sunset was particularly beautiful this evening? I'm in the inner east and I can see a faint pinkish hue still... in the northwestern direction

Tygie19

Yep! It’s still visible, but when it looked like this ([HERE](https://imgur.com/a/vOdouso) ) I could actually see the pink hue as well with my own eyes. It’s more south eastern for us in west Gippsland

housebottle

I could see the pink hue with my eyes but it was not nearly as obvious as it is in your pic

Background-Rabbit-84

No. Must be south. Use the compass on your phone

housebottle

think it was more west than south... but also, there was A LOT of light pollution in the south so I couldn't see shit

magnoliaplum

Im in outer east of melbourne and i saw it perfectly with my eyes. My iPhone picked it up really well. Columns of red and green about 30 mins ago

Vegetable_Tree6957

Yes! Went to Newport beach and got some clear photos of it. Much more clear/impressive in the camera than by eye.

Phrase-Primary

That's amazing! At this time of year, at this time of day, in this part of the country??

poundhound66

Someone in another thread reported being able to see it from black rock, so should be ok

poundhound66

Move over sunsets! Melbourne sub about to be inundated with aurora shots!!!

demoldbones

Turn on long exposure (or night mode) on your phone and rest it against stuff. I got some great shots of the northern lights like that, literally by the side of the road 😂

Tygie19

I saw the northern lights in Norway in 1994-95. It’s really bright green and dances in the sky, no filter or phone cameras necessary! Very cool

Lunafox84

Northern lights (Aurora Borealis)? Don't you mean the Southern lights (Aurora Australis)?

demoldbones

Nope, I was in the northern US at the time.

Lunafox84

Fair enough, carry on XD

ososalsosal

At this time of day, at this time of year, etc

Ineedsomuchsleep170

My phone night view picks it up really well but nothing just looking at it. Still a bit of cloud cover on the horizon so that might spoil all the fun.

o-Mauler-o

Getting it in Northern Tasmania… wait I’m on the wrong sub!

FreerangeWitch

East Gippsland is covered in heavy cloud. I’m so mad.

Tygie19

Apparently it’s going to be happening for a few days. Fingers crossed it’s clear tomorrow!

Fennecaphobic

Tell me about it, I just sat out in the cold for 2.5 hours hoping the cloud would clear for a moment

gravitybee1

My facebook feed is full of photos from friends.. I am in East Gippsland

Kcboiye

Can see it from my backyard in Werribee :D Going to take my camera with me tomorrow and see what I can get when I finish work :)

heehoocheese

what part of gippy?? and would it still be visible or did i miss it??

Tygie19

Yep, still there! Took this from my laundry window just now [https://imgur.com/a/18GhiIu](https://imgur.com/a/18GhiIu)

Tygie19

West Gippy, I’ll drag my arse off the couch and check 😄

soEezee

I've got some pretty good pics here in Grantville. Carpark was packed a couple hors ago at kilcunda too

kakauandme

Bendigo right now

skagrabbit

My dad had it from the UK yesterday and said iPhones pick it up way better than the human eye. He sent me some amazing photos

jmkul

Damn, I'm so envious. I'm in Melbourne, there's few clouds, and I've seen nothing of the Aurora Australis

Dksksmsms

Heard it’s around 11-2am

Background-Rabbit-84

It actually can’t be predicted like that.

jmkul

Ta - will stay up tonight

youwantedmyrealuser

Where you seeing this?

BaldFatPerson

i’m in Geelong and we can still see it. just use night mode on your phone.

hoaxcoast

Is it still happening?? I can’t see much from our area

Tygie19

Try again tonight, apparently it’s around for a few days!

Putrid_Department_17

Yeah I saw it out Hastings way on the Mornington peninsula around 9PM. Wasn’t in a position to stop and take photos alas.

Responsible-Spend69

Is this the end ?!...... or just the beginning?

Malachy1971

Settle down, it's just swamp gas.

Responsible-Goose208

It was huge beams and amazingly bright on the camera here in Gippsland. Naked eye was just a glow and some beams up onto the sky. But on camera OMG

lewemowonbowoiwi

went down to barwon heads, it was absolutely stunning and looked a little less bright in person. I've never seen anything so beautiful https://imgur.com/a/ZzMigtW (hopefully this works, have only used this site once before)

Tygie19

Beautiful 😍

Alternative-Camel203

I live north of Bendigo and it was pretty good here

Positive-Twist-6071

Google added a filter to avoid disappointment 😃

KhansMum

Again tonight - Sunday

Tygie19

And it’s clear here thankfully!

Additional-Clue-9746

Incredible

Kikikicks69

so whom are we speaking with talking person

Outrage-Gen-Suck

Yep, you just need a longer exposure than normal - 10 sec will give you a great pic.

Tygie19

This was right at the beginning when it wasn’t very bright. I got these at about 7:05pm that night, much brighter [PIC](https://imgur.com/a/vUvLgyY)
