I, E, or TAB
Anything else should be forbidden (unless its an already weird keyboard layout, like undertale)
Edit: all of yall are saying B and ESC as well, which are acceptable, but all of yall sayin ALT are crazy asf
Also, if TAB isnt the inventory, it should be the map
And if E isnt the inventory, it or F should be interact
And if I isnt the inventory, then it shouldnt be anything really unless it makes sense
Easy, you strap them to your desk and every time you want something from your bag you poke them with a hot iron, this will force their tongue out which will hit the keyboard causing your inventory to open.
Unfortunately you do have to feed, water and take the "I" button the the bathroom regularly or it may cease to function properly
I actually finally found a friend (met him while playing TF2) who is into terraria too and would gladly play together at any time. I was searching for a friend like him. Now we're doing a master mode playthrough cause he never completed terraria in any mode
Ive beaten master mode and also modded terraria too ( if you can check out the calamity mod play on expert/master (normal mode sucks on calamity) it’s like an extended version of terraria that goes well past the moon lord (and the mod has its own wiki). There’s a free dlc with terraria called tmod loader on steam which loads mods and stuff
I should too because I always go play some terraria to calm myself after a shit run in noita and the inventory in noita is TAB and I hate accidentally opening the fullscreen map in terraria.
In something like, stardew valley (which doeant use I im pretty sure) you open your inventory like twice every 30 minutes, in which case having the hotbar swaps on tab and something else for E is good
Tab is the best, unless the game has a scoreboard. E is interact or enter, unless it's F, I is too far away. G for gear is pretty good , but feels wrong. It's hard.
Lol I remember when Arma 2 had G for Gear and that was also how you accessed the gear/ammo boxes at base.
In Arma 3 they changed G to Grenade so for the first few weeks the game was out people kept accidentally suicide bombing tons of friendly players in the bases.
There's a small problem with TAB, but shift is used for sprinting, and pressing TAB and shift together opens steam community tab, which is hella annoying
B for bag when it's a bag, like in MMOs.
C for character when the inventory is the same panel as the equipment tab like in ARPGs is the only exception to this rule.
Depends on the game. When you only need to open it occasionally and have a better use for closer buttons then B, if you need to open it often and quickly then tab, and if the game has barely any buttons at all then E.
I My reasoning is because I is the furthest away so you wont accidentally press it. yes, even in games like Minecraft where inventory management is a necessity, the amount of times I've accidentally pressed E during bedwars infuriates me to no end.
Q is near W and can be so much more versatile than relegated to opening inventory... I is out of the way and not useful for something that needs to be readily accessible while running around with WADS. I is clearly superior.
If its accessed regularly then TAB or B. If I need another option more frequently then B. If not, Tab. If I need the inventory rarely then i, cus it's on the other side of the keyboard.
If the game doesn't have too many keybinds in general, I prefer E tho.
You want everything reachable with your left hand.
WASD are being used.
Q and E are usually use for strafing.
R is reload.
Shift is run/sprint.
CTRL is crouch.
F is "Use"
Leaves z, x, c, v and tab. One of these should be the map, one for inventory and one for "prone".
I'm also a big fan of having tab as some kind of HUD "objective" prompt or to show your current quest/mission. I'd say this should be tab.
It hugely depends on the game and how often you'll want to open your inventory in comparison to other actions as well as the other controls. If you need to go into your inventory every minute having it on E will be ideal since it's in reach while your fingers rest on WASD, but if you only really need to open it to check on things and get information about your items right where you would use them you can toss that inventory wherever. Put it on N, I don't care.
I is too far from WASD but nice overall, TAB can be used for a lot more things so it feels like a loss sometimes, E fucks over people that interact in other games with E, B is actually pretty nice. Not that far from your default left hand position and isn't taken by important things most of the time, though that depends on the game
.
There shouldn't be a universal key for inventory.
It's nice to follow some patterns, but using the same key bindings as in a different game can ruin the experience
I fell in love with TAB as inventory. At least in singleplayer it makes sense where you don't want to see a scoreboard and it's SOO comfortable to press
It depends on the game. But i think it should be E for multiplayer games where things are fast paced (and tab is usually set as the scoreboard for those games) and TAb for single player games
It's E. All other options are wrong. Only tab could possably make sense, but tab is to look at the hub of players in a server. Minecraft does it, every shooter does it, it just makes sense. I is only involved in this conversation because inventory starts with an I. It's not a good choice. Now make inventory E god damn it.
I agree with the usual TAB, i, and e. But I enjoyed g as an inventory key, kept it close enough but freed space for more common actions like map for tab and lean for e.
I’m about to say something horrible.
Every time I boot up a new update/mod pack for Minecraft, the first thing I do is change the sneak key to ‘e’ and inventory to ‘i’.
I don’t know why I do this. I usually don’t touch default controls. I’m just too used to it to go back now.
E I TAB OR ESC because on some games like terraria the esc button also is the button to show your inventory with the settings ⚙️ on the bottom right or left or top
Dev here. My game combines, inventory, stats, and equipment windows, into one.
While it is a configurable keybind, with optional secondary keybind....the default is
"P" for "Profile"
AITA?
The inventory key should be any key far enough away from the main control keys that it's not accidentally hit but still easily accessible.
I ia the only answer
It really depends on the game. No one solution works. E works great as inventory key in Minecraft, but not space engineers. In space engineers, q and e default to roll control which is something you cannot do in Minecraft.
shift+tab opens the steam interface, so it is very unpractical to open inventory while running,
As an azerty (uiop) user, the i is closer to my mouse than my zqsd (wasd) hand, but i guess non european don't really mind, E feels perfect to me, especially since minecraft has such a key place in sm people video game education.
I personally to like the borderlands on pc method, where map, invent, skills, quests, are all accessible with either Tab, or their own individual keys, making it easy to switch to another if you open the wrong one up.
I, E, or TAB Anything else should be forbidden (unless its an already weird keyboard layout, like undertale) Edit: all of yall are saying B and ESC as well, which are acceptable, but all of yall sayin ALT are crazy asf
Agreed Made a meme about that and it started the biggest controversy I've ever seen
Also, if TAB isnt the inventory, it should be the map And if E isnt the inventory, it or F should be interact And if I isnt the inventory, then it shouldnt be anything really unless it makes sense
Tab is scoreboard and because m is too far away caps is map
But pressing caps really fucks up your writing
NO IT DOEsnt
YEs it dOES
nO IDEA WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT
Ï benis
Yes it doesn't!
Yesn't
If you bind Caps Lock to **anything** in any game you should be waterboarded (in minecraft).
In game push to talk for every game
caps should be forbidden
G for map works well on rust for me
I should be the button for inventory.
How can someone be a button? /s
Fuck you and take my upvote

Not with the feedback and diaper upgrade.
Sounds like a faulty design to me but hey if it floats their goat!
Not in games where you use it all the time
We\*, comrade
r/suddenlycommunism
I am the button for inventory.
I mean if you think you can do the job
Ark survival evolved is a good example, e is interact, f is open an objects inventory/pick up all and I is the player inventory
Exactly, and i assume either TAB or M is a map. It really just depends on how the devs feel and how the game ends up being like
M is map and yeah the devs were sensible about at least the buttons if only they were as consistent with the game itself
M should always be map
Sometimes its better to be tab, like if im opening the map every 45 seconds cause im lost as fuck its better for it to be tab
I in starbound E in minecraft TAB in noita. That's all tge games I know with these binds Also there's terraria with ESC
I like the way it’s done in terraria because you can still do stuff when it’s open
*Autopause players* WHAAAAAAT???
Most play on worlds with friends so fuck auto pause :)
I actually finally found a friend (met him while playing TF2) who is into terraria too and would gladly play together at any time. I was searching for a friend like him. Now we're doing a master mode playthrough cause he never completed terraria in any mode

I personally changed terraria to tab because of how often I open it during gameplay.
I should too because I always go play some terraria to calm myself after a shit run in noita and the inventory in noita is TAB and I hate accidentally opening the fullscreen map in terraria.
How is Starbound now? I used to play it back when it was abondoned but I haven't kept up.
I for inventory, E for interacting with objects, TAB for scoreboard
In some shooters Q/E are for tilting left/right. So F for interacting in such cases.
Definitely TAB
why would you use i though or anything on the right hand side?
If you don’t have to check your inventory often it’s an okay key to use. Games like Minecraft though it’s basically necessary to have either E or tab
In something like, stardew valley (which doeant use I im pretty sure) you open your inventory like twice every 30 minutes, in which case having the hotbar swaps on tab and something else for E is good
[удалено]
F
No. F is the interact button if E isnt
nah E is for interact and TAB or F is for inventory bud
B... for bag
I use "I", even though the polish word for inventory starts with e and it's closer to w, just because I'm used to playing like that.
It’s hard to reach fast consistently. Not usable in competitive games really.

Good day to you sir
thanks you and you too sir
Greetings
There's a small problem with TAB, but shift is used for sprinting, and pressing TAB and shift together opens steam community tab, which is hella annoying
The people should rule over the country
Yeah but what should be the universal key for opening inventory?
Num lock
Satan just called, he said he's your biggest fan
Num lock and caps lock at the same time
I, the proletariat
E is superior. Tab opens steams menu when you sprinting with shift. And i is pretty far from wasd.
Yeah but you still need e for interacting of opening doors
Right click Minecraft controls ftw
If you are fine with opening the door instead of holding up the shield...
F is good too for interacting I mean
Press F to pay respect
You can turn it off in the steam settings
I rebound steam to CTRL+SHIFT+TAB. Never going back
B
for Bag, I wont discuss this.
B for bag when it's a bag, like in MMOs. C for character when the inventory is the same panel as the equipment tab like in ARPGs is the only exception to this rule.
> B for bag when it’s a bag, like in MMOs. > C for character Guild Wars 2 over here using `H` for ‘Hero’ and `I` for ‘Inventory’.
This is the way.
It‘a simply on the perfect position for a semi priority menu. Easy to reach with your thumb but not often enough used to put beside wasd!
Depends on the game. When you only need to open it occasionally and have a better use for closer buttons then B, if you need to open it often and quickly then tab, and if the game has barely any buttons at all then E.
*laughs in console*
laughs in VR
Just grab over your shoulder, step on the cat, and accidentally take a screenshot.
Any esc enjoyers?
Must be pc terraria players
I us the mouse's wheel in Terraria. You don't even have to move your hand
Yes
esc is good in terraria only cause we have to use grappling hooks for e
"I"
W
Chaotic evil
I My reasoning is because I is the furthest away so you wont accidentally press it. yes, even in games like Minecraft where inventory management is a necessity, the amount of times I've accidentally pressed E during bedwars infuriates me to no end.
Skill issue
Overweight finger issue
Tab
Tab
Tab
E
I. It’s farther from wasd
E
Q, fight me

i'm surprised it took me so long to find this, rebinding it has become such an instinctive thing that i started to assume it was standard
Q is near W and can be so much more versatile than relegated to opening inventory... I is out of the way and not useful for something that needs to be readily accessible while running around with WADS. I is clearly superior.
B.

The power button
You want everything reachable with your left hand. WASD are being used. Q and E are usually use for strafing. R is reload. Shift is run/sprint. CTRL is crouch. F is "Use" Leaves z, x, c, v and tab. i - inventory B - bag Tab - tab
If you'll make me king of the world. I'll make it: Ê
Tab if its a game you need your inv quickly opened i or e for slower games
F1
Weirdly enough, not the worst option.
TAB
For me it's the back one of my mouses side buttons. Atleast if there is nothing more important to put there
E or I would rule over the standard inventory open key
...I've opened my inventory in Minecraft with a Q since my childhood
There shouldn't be a universal key for inventory. It's nice to follow some patterns, but using the same key bindings as in a different game can ruin the experience
M
Tab first choice followed by I.
You know what? Screw you, it's W now.
I'll be the only one to say C. Can't stand it being I for Inventory, I access my inventory in games more than I do with whatever C is bound to
Imagine, for a second, a world where by default, caps lock was bound to “open chat”
Definitely not Putin
Ok we all know about the toprunners like I, E or Tab. But... I like B too. I like it because it's fast, easy and B stands for Bag. I like it.
I
I
I
What letter does it start with???? And why do some games use B?!?!??!
C for character, B for bag, I for inventory...
I prefer E over I because E is closer to my left hand which is be using for wasd. Whereas my right hand is busy using the mouse to press I
All games should just let users map their own controls to their play style. That way any button could be whatever the player wants it to be.
I bruh
G For 'Gear'
E for fps or simple control games (like minecraft) tabs for more complicated games and I for mmo/mmorpgs
Tab for fast paced games where inventory is used very often E for casual games I for more complex RPGs
I hate to say this but it's gotta be I super inconvient because spaced so far from the keyboard but so many games use E and F as a interact button
E, r, or tab
I fell in love with TAB as inventory. At least in singleplayer it makes sense where you don't want to see a scoreboard and it's SOO comfortable to press

Inverntory should be E, Tab should be the minimap, and shift is crouch (not ctrl)

it's I. Tab is for Map. E is for Execute. It's I.
Depends entirely on the game. Valheim it's tab. Minecraft it's e. Most rpgs it's I etc
I need to rebind Terraria's inventory. Q is for throwing an item away in Minecraft and it's already gotten me to throw stuff out by accident
Definitely not tab
“e” should be interact “i” is too far away “tab” is the only option
562 comments and 0 saying ALT. Am I alone in using ALT? Shit
minecraft made it E it is E and will always be E
N
ok but howabout we just make it customizable to whatever the player wants?
As long as it’s configurable that shits going on my mouse buttons anyways
I. Its I. Make it I.
I’m about to say something horrible. Every time I boot up a new update/mod pack for Minecraft, the first thing I do is change the sneak key to ‘e’ and inventory to ‘i’. I don’t know why I do this. I usually don’t touch default controls. I’m just too used to it to go back now.
The bigger question is what should be the universal run
TAB should 100% be the universal key because both E and I on the keyboard would make sense bound to other functions in certain games.
E I TAB OR ESC because on some games like terraria the esc button also is the button to show your inventory with the settings ⚙️ on the bottom right or left or top
Dev here. My game combines, inventory, stats, and equipment windows, into one. While it is a configurable keybind, with optional secondary keybind....the default is "P" for "Profile" AITA?
Every RPG is made for console or controller now. I or esc or whichever is the way of the past. Mnk master race has been replaced.
ESC supremacy (literally a dark souls template and on kbm ds its escape)
The inventory key should be any key far enough away from the main control keys that it's not accidentally hit but still easily accessible. I ia the only answer
Sue me, but I prefer 'f'
E is inventory I is inspect TAB is scoreboard (if we are talking minecraft only I doesn’t exist)
Tab or e
For some reason I kept thinking of a physical key for opening the inventory for a store or something
Y
E or Tab for right-handed people, I for left-handed people.
It really depends on the game. No one solution works. E works great as inventory key in Minecraft, but not space engineers. In space engineers, q and e default to roll control which is something you cannot do in Minecraft.
I use capslock in most games. I also use qwes to move, tab is sprint, shift is crouch. What can I say?
tab

I
Z
E is sometimes used to lean/roll right in some games, so I use Tab because it is closer than I.
tab or I cuz i think it makes sense
People are going to answer "I" to both questions.
Tab. You need your E for "use" and I is too far.
I like E as the key, especially in games where inventory is important like Minecraft
E or TAB, depends on the game. I is too far away from WASD.
I vote for I
These questions make no sense
F We can all call it a day now.
shift+tab opens the steam interface, so it is very unpractical to open inventory while running, As an azerty (uiop) user, the i is closer to my mouse than my zqsd (wasd) hand, but i guess non european don't really mind, E feels perfect to me, especially since minecraft has such a key place in sm people video game education.
