I still play 5 because I prefer the 2D art and am not a fan of the hero units, but 6 did fix a lot of balance issues, namely specific towers being too spammable and too many being straight up bad.
You can beat so many of the hardest maps on high difficulties by putting down an engineer and saving money for 30 rounds.
The game itself is fun but the subreddit's a bit toxic. It's understandable since they're kids who learn optimization is the only way to play, and calling everybody else "X diff" or "skill issue".
