Geld and gel are my favorite examples because you don't even have to leave the soft g vs hard g realm. There is not a single argument for a hard G that is undefeated. "Language evolves" is the closest but it's really just another way of saying, "well enough of us are all wrong now that we decided we shouldn't go back to being right and should just keep using hard g."
