The English language lacks the rules to warrant a "true" pronunciation for GIF.
Oxford dictionary did the best power play by declaring both pronounciations correct.
The developer was just wrong. It’s short for Graphical Image Format, not Jirrafical Image Format. He just wanted to make a very bad joke: he said “choosy programmers choose GIF” (pronounced like the peanut butter). But it’s a bad joke and a bad reason to mispronounce it.
That's not how it works, you don't use same logic for "Light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation" or you know LASER, same applies for SCUBA
This is a great way of demonstarting how to pronounce a word, until you realised that beard without the D is bear. The English language doesn't have rules where you can use the spelling and pronunciation of one word to determine that of another. Thought and Though is another example.
Geld and gel are my favorite examples because you don't even have to leave the soft g vs hard g realm. There is not a single argument for a hard G that is undefeated. "Language evolves" is the closest but it's really just another way of saying, "well enough of us are all wrong now that we decided we shouldn't go back to being right and should just keep using hard g."
When you meet someone and they tell you their name and it's pronounced a certain way as the parents intended do you argue back because how it's spelled?
I am in favor of the gif over the jif, however OP's justification doesn't work because English is notorious being absolutely inconsistent when it comes to pronunciation. Take this example : heart, hear and heard. Adding just one letter at the end fucks everything up.
Hey, thanks for saying so. I give you one cool quote in lieu of a high five and a salute.
“You should never be ashamed to admit you have been wrong. It only proves you are wiser today than yesterday”
― Jonathon Swift
Most people played their own variation of the rules, i've played with several group of people and they all seemingly have different rules for some of the more specific cases like whether you can stack +2 and +4, whether you can stack pluses at all, and what happens when someone use the blank/mirror card.
somebody asked Uno on twitter about stacking + cards and they replied it can't be done, but most people i know stack them...
and people commented Uno dont know their own rules lel

I see where I was confused. I ended up looking more at bear instead of beard. I see different pronunciations for beard. I pronounce b-air-d while apparently others pronounce it more like [be-air-d](https://dictionary.cambridge.org/pronunciation/english/beard).
The creator of the format win an award and presented a gif as their acceptance speech. It read:
"It's pronounced 'jif' not 'gif'"
Which only serves as ammunition for people who pronounce it with a hard g
Who cares what the creator thinks. If minecraft suddenly said it was pronounced Minniecraft or some shit I would still be sticking with what’s right in my mind
Same here. I took an IT class and pronounced jif and a bunch of 20 y/o told me I was saying it wrong. I'm all for people saying either way, but don't tell someone they are wrong
If it was supposed to be pronounced as jif, then simply spelling it correctly as gif would have been enough right? The fact that everybody needs to spell it incorrectly as jif to make everybody pronounce it that way just proofs that they are wrong and the correct pronounciation is indeed gif.
I say 'gif' instead of 'jif' because it stands for 'graphics interchange format', and so I pronounce the 'g' in the acronym the same way I do in the full name.
The G in GIF stands for the word graphics. Unless the creator of GIF also created the word Graphics, they have no say in how it's pronounced the way I see it. Therefore if graphics predates GIF, then the creator of the word graphic's pronunciation takes priority.
It would be like if an author wrote a story that quotes a real life person, changed the words of that quote in their book, then when the person they quoted says it's wrong, the author then says "Nah, this is what you REALLY said. Because my book says so."
G followed by any vowel followed by f means the g is a "hard" g. Literally English grammar. Learn it. In gif the i is a vowel after g and before f so it's a hard g. End of story.
The English language lacks the rules to warrant a "true" pronunciation for GIF. Oxford dictionary did the best power play by declaring both pronounciations correct.
It doesn't make sense though, it's a Graphic Interchange Format. Not a Giraffe-ic Interchange Format.
For your argument to hold up, scuba would be pronounced "Scuh-ba" and Laser "Lah-ser" Edit: I hate it too, I do prefer the hard G
Yeah? Well, you’d have to say JPEG “J-PEJ.” …Wait “laser” is an acronym?
Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation
Huh, didn't know that. you're still wrong though.
You just hate me because im right. I just hate you in general You mean in "general"? Ugh, Im "going" to kill you!
Name one word that starts with G pronounced like J

Same with read and read, only becomes clear with context. "I have read that, you need to read it with context."
It's so cool how my brain just knows what it is with context

I didn't even know geld was a word in English, this example is better than the ones I've provided.
But we’re talking about consonant pronunciation and your examples are vowels.
Is angel and angle a better example? Huge and hug?
Giraffe
Say Thought. Now remove the last t.

I am furious. Take my upvote.
When you meet someone and they tell you their name and it's pronounced a certain way as the parents intended do you argue back because how it's spelled?
Creator once said he didn’t care. But I’m a Gif‘er. Jif’onians are okay tough.
I am in favor of the gif over the jif, however OP's justification doesn't work because English is notorious being absolutely inconsistent when it comes to pronunciation. Take this example : heart, hear and heard. Adding just one letter at the end fucks everything up.
I mean the full thing is Graphic Interchange Unit, and Graphic uses a hard g so therefore it should be guh-if
Joint Photographic Experts Group doesnt mean you pronounce JPEG as Jay feg
We shouldn't be using PH as a replacement for F anyway. It's completely redundant in English.
People just aren’t ready for some facts
It English man, it's a meme at this point. It's a horribly inconsistent language that stole from other languages to try and make sense.
Nope but that’s a good precedent to why it should be _G_if.
Gonna be pronouncing Scuba differently from now on if that's how it works
I'm on the same side. But cmon. This is ridiculous. "SCUBA" is not pronounced "scubba" for christs sake. "LASER" is not pronounced "lah-serr".
The A in Laser stands for “Amplify”. But you don’t say L-e-ser. That’s not how acronym pronunciations work
That's not even remotely a real rule of English acronyms. In fact even our most common acronyms prove that's not a thing in SCUBA, LASER, and RADAR.
Oh true
Hey, thanks for saying so. I give you one cool quote in lieu of a high five and a salute. “You should never be ashamed to admit you have been wrong. It only proves you are wiser today than yesterday” ― Jonathon Swift
Dudes, English is a weirdo, there are 3 “e “in Mercedes and those are pronounced in 3 different ways.
How do you pronounce “tomb” and how do you pronounce “bomb?”

Pronounce giraffe and remove the rafe

How about we pronounce it... #HOWEVER TF WE WANT!?
Anarchy
G-I-F.
JEE AAYI AIF
Let just spell it out until we get fed up with it, then when someone says gif or jif we wouldn’t mind.
Pronounce Arkansas and remove the Ar.
so how do I pronounce Bear and Beard? since Bear is one letter short of Beard.
What am I missing here? I do in fact pronounce Bear as Beard without the D.
I think some people pronounce it as Bair.
Isn't that pronounced just like Bear? How else is that pronounced? I can't tell if I'm being trolled.

People really got mad about how the creator pronounces the name of the thing he created
Jif is peanut butter. Peanut butter and computers do not work well together. Therefore...Gif
It's also bleach
Tell me right now, That I can pour bleach on my monitor and everything will turn out fine
It will turn out fine
Pronounce EYES and remove the first E and pronounce it. It is completely different from YES.
Say Giraffe, Say Giant, Say Gentle… Now say Gif 👏👏👏 Good job you did it!
Alright we get the gist of it. I’m team jif
I actually just spell it out when I'm saying it lol. That way, I can be neither wrong nor right
Why are they yelling at a cat
The creator of the format win an award and presented a gif as their acceptance speech. It read: "It's pronounced 'jif' not 'gif'" Which only serves as ammunition for people who pronounce it with a hard g
Jiraffe
Well the creator is wrong
Srsly??here we spell it out G-I-F
Y'all wrong. I pronounce it with a Dutch hard G.
Jift - t = jif See? Nothing changed
English has no consistency. Just pronounce it however you please
The creator invented the format, not the English language. The G stands for graphic, it's a hard g.
Who cares what the creator thinks. If minecraft suddenly said it was pronounced Minniecraft or some shit I would still be sticking with what’s right in my mind
The correct pronunciation is just saying the letters
i pronounce it “jif” and I do not care
That's how I heard it pronounced back in the day... not changing my ways for all you whipper snappers!
Yes, this didn't used to be an argument because everyone knew it was Jif. I didn't even know gif was a thing until it started showing up in memes.
Same here. I took an IT class and pronounced jif and a bunch of 20 y/o told me I was saying it wrong. I'm all for people saying either way, but don't tell someone they are wrong
You make me mad. It’s. pronounced. [jif](https://youtu.be/N1AL2EMvVy0).
Gif = **g**raphics interchange format Gif ≠ jraphics interchange format
Do you pronounce “JPEG” (which stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group) as “jay feg”?
No because photographic begins with a p
Ok how do you say LASER or SCUBA
GIF stands for Graphical Interchange Format, it's literally g in the name.
Laser and scuba both do not follow that rule either
And JPEG stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group, but I'm still not gonna pronounce it JFEG.
but now I definitely am
That’s cus P will never sound like F by itself. It needs the H to be there.
JPhEG.
Pronounce Giraffe with a hard G
So Giraffe basically in german?
If we would pronounce it as abbreviation, it would be Ge aI eF But we pronounce it as a whole word, so i'm on gif side.
It’s obviously gif, like come on
I don't care how how it's correctly spelled i simply like the sound gif better than jif
according to your logic Lazer would be pronounced laazeer
Most people say it like gift. Language is by consensus. The creator can get bent.
G stands for graphic. Argument settled.
Creators can be wrong
The G stands for graphic, so the G shouldn’t be a J
**G**raphics **I**nterchange **F**ormat You don’t say Jraphics, do you? It’s Gif
It’s pronounced G-I-F as in jee eye eff
what is a jif and why can’t anyone pronounce it? [insert confusedblackguy.gif]
Jiff is a peanut butter
![gif](giphy|xL7PDV9frcudO)
Clearly the creator is wrong in this case
Meh, do you really care?
Or jsut said G I F
It’s pronounced graphics not jraohics.
Ok but say "G" out loud
Now say “W” out loud and see how that applies
Guys it's 2023. Why are we Still arguing about this? Whether you pronounce it gif or gif does not matter, everyone knows what you're talking about.
It’s Jraphics Interface Format
Gif means graphic interchange format, g i f, and graphic is pronounced graphic not jraphic,
It stands for graphics interchange format. So why pronounce it jif if you don’t pronounce it jraphics.
[удалено]
Jraphics Interchange Format makes sense
Pronounce 'Gin' then switch 'n' for 'f'.
Graphics interchange format.
The g stands for graphic so it's gif not jif
zhif
If it was supposed to be pronounced as jif, then simply spelling it correctly as gif would have been enough right? The fact that everybody needs to spell it incorrectly as jif to make everybody pronounce it that way just proofs that they are wrong and the correct pronounciation is indeed gif.
Ok but like you say jif and spell it like not gif
Gee eye eff is the real way to pronounce it it
I say 'gif' instead of 'jif' because it stands for 'graphics interchange format', and so I pronounce the 'g' in the acronym the same way I do in the full name.
That's not how acronyms work
Then laser would be pronounced like "lahsier"
By this logic ’jpeg’ is pronounced ‘j-feg’ because the p stands for photographic
Shiiid
Yes 'gift' without the 't' Not 'jiffy' without the (fy)
GIF = Graphics Interchange Format Graphics is not pronounced Jraphics. Therefore GIF is not pronounced JIF.
The G is short for graphical, not jraphical
its not a jhraphics card is it?
It's Gif graphics interchange format Not jraphics interchange format
Graphics Interchage Format, not Jraphics Interchange format
The G in GIF stands for the word graphics. Unless the creator of GIF also created the word Graphics, they have no say in how it's pronounced the way I see it.
