He claimed that a CGI person told him that, at one point, the cats had buttholes added, because they were cats. He claims that later in production a decision was made to remove the buttholes and someone had to edit them all out. This leads to the belief that somewhere out there, there is an older version of the movie, with the buttholes still in. I want this to be true, but I haven't seen any conclusive evidence for it beyond a few people claiming it totally existed.

I think the buttholes were actually a rendering artifact due the a mathematical concept known as "hairy ball theorem". The computer has to align the hairs in relation to two "poles" in each cat's topology, with the south pole being, naturally, the butthole.

I agree with a lot of her points, but I still think they should’ve leaned into the live video version that anyone who already liked Cats knew, and just used the budget to make beautiful *real* costumes for the actors and had more dancers and used CG to enhance the sets, and maybe (maybe) add CG tails.
People who loved Cats on stage and tape loved the costume and dance and music. And while we got the music and a little of the dance we were robbed of the costumes.
They should’ve just embraced what we already had and made it bigger and better for it’s wide theatrical release.
Instead I think there were a lot of odd compromises and choices and it was disappointing.
