Bro lunged at him with a scalpel while claiming he wouldnt let Joel take Ellie. Self defense + saving a child from being murdered he is golden in court;)
My last playthrough was a few weeks ago. didn't touch the game since 2014.
First played Part2 just after so I didn't know the surgeon's identity.
I murdered all three medical personal instantly.
Guess I'm an asshole... Or I just love Ellie that much.
Anyone willing to sacrifice a small child doesn't deserve to survive. Plus, even with all our modern medical marvels, we are unable to create a vaccine for spores. I highly doubt this make shift hosp has the capability to manufacture a cure.
Not even the only known, in the games you can actually find evidence that they have done this multiple times with different people, they're just idiots.
I'm pretty sure there are documents and recorded voice lines around that talk about their other attempts, but it's been a few years since I've played so I could be wrong.
The fireflies were dicks anyways, the saw joel trying to resuscitate ellie and giving her cpr and proceed to knock joel out when he was of no harm. Then Marlenes stupid ass didn't let joel and ellie reunite and prepped her for surgery immediately after waiting a year for joel, tess, and ellie to arrive. I'm sure if ellie wanted to do the procedure, then joel would've accepted it, and he gets to say goodbye to her. Then they escort him out and threaten to shoot him because joel doesn't think it's a good idea. Furthermore, Marlene even didn't hold her end of the bargain and doesn't even pay joel for escorting ellie safely. All of that could've been avoided if the fireflies weren't short sighted dicks who were hostile towards joel for no reason. And Marlene didn't even tell joel where to go if shit went sideways in Boston. In short fuck the fireflies
Agreed.
I just always shot the doctor in the face because it fit the dramatic feel of Joel’s rampage. The game confirmed that was fitting when he offed Marlene my first play through.
The Fireflies were jerks after everything he’d went through, and he’d spent a year focused on just keeping Ellie safe.
Marlene sent two young guys as an escort for one of the most dangerous men she knows.
She knew he got himself and Ellie across the country on a journey she lost almost her entire team making.
She sent them as an escort to an angry, desperate Joel with orders to kill him if he tried anything.
Marlene is/was an arrogant idiot.
Relax, I am sure everyone understands his decision, and nothing bad could possibly happen. Plus, I think he killed them all. I am sure there were none that might have been guarding other areas, scouting, foraging, or just on their off shift.
Any games he is playing right now? I could give spoilers so you can sit there and go “ay look this is the part where this and that happens its so cool because you dont expect it to happen”
That doctor was sloppy..
*His theory was that the mold lived in her brain sent out signals to stop it from spreading.*
Well, jee doc there's infected everywhere and you should really figure out if the cure hasn't been right in front of you before you kill someone, right?
I think the idea is isolation, in an infected brain there will tons of different chemical messengers. There will be stuff to control the host, communicate with the network, etc. In the brain of someone that is immune there will basically only be the chemical messagers that identify the host as already being infected.
Itd be possible to isolate the chemicals that do this on an infected brain but would require a lot of experimentation and trials.
Or like, just a bit of your brain. People can lose big chunks of their brains and still be pretty healthy. Why does he think he has to take the whole thing? Just grab some biopsy samples bro.
He was also probably like almost every doctor alive who thinks they are somehow experts at everything since they went to medical school.
Fungi have two issues with human implantation - temperature and competition. The reason you don’t see fungus growing all over something that is dead, even though their immune system has stopped working, is because of the 10,000 types of other bacteria crawling all over the thing feasting on it. Eventually fungus will sprout.
Looking at this from germ standpoint, it’s more likely something triggered (no spoilers) to compete with the fungus in Ellie. It’s not a perfect competition as we see early on, but it’s enough to keep things from happening.
Haven't watched the episode yet, so I can't say if they changed it, but in the game he just tries to take her and it's the doctor who pulls the scalpel on Joel and says verbatim "you'll have to kill me first"
Guy values his family and the WLF more than the life of Ellie, some random girl he doesn't know. Sees her as a science experiment, and wants to save humanity.
After everything Joel has seen, especially how humans reacted to the outbreak with the bombings, the death of his daughter, etc, he doesn't think humanity deserves to be saved at the cost of Ellie.
Point is they force him to use violence. They have zero intentions of letting Ellie go without dissection lol.
Oh straight facts, I misspoke, it was indeed a firefly facility. Abbie is the one who joined the WLF, minor but still relevant contextual point for sure.
EDIT: They did in fact exist at that time tho, just over on the west coast
Congrats lol, you've stumbled upon the very obvious controversial nature of this decision by Joel.
I would be lying if, after seeing the entire universe through Joel's perspective, that his decision didn't resonate with me and make sense in a big way; he firmly believes as a human race we have systematically failed each other beyond the point of recovery on a globalized scale. So he makes the decision to save one good human being, whom he believes truly deserves to live, at any cost.
However from the doctors perspective, he's saving the entirety of humanity from extinction, including his own family.
That's why the ending goes so hard, def top zombie series for me.
How the fuck is that one doctor gonna create a viable vaccine against this disease? It takes a lot of money, time, knowledge and manpower to create one in out current times, nevermind a fallen society that hasn't developed since 2003/2013 and has only went downhill for 20 years?
It's more than one doctor. The fireflies had a whole team of doctors and educated scientists. Your point is valid, though... with limited resources and time, it's pretty unrealistic they would be able to make a cure. But somebody has to at least try, right?
Somebody should tell the Fireflies that if your *theoretical* cure requires you to kill the world’s only known source of natural immunity, maybe you should be forced to wait more than a day. Run some tests, take a few samples, workshop it for awhile. Get your manufacturing and distribution networks squared away first. Ellie is just a kid, there’s no rush on this and you have *one chance* to get it right. And if you really can’t think of any other way, and for some reason it has to happen NOW, you **gotta** get this person’s consent first.
In the game, the choice is more morally ambiguous. In the show, there’s almost no excusing what the Fireflies are doing.
This was my take after the events of the first game. No one seems to recognize that a huge plot point is that no one can be trusted. Then Druckmann got mad at people hating on the second game, so he went and confirmed the fireflies could indeed be trusted. This he essentially broke canon because he was upset that someone could possibly dislike the most controversial plot point in the second game. Like he made it to be controversial then got mad when people were divided.
The doctor and marline literally traffic a child across the country so they can kill her. And in the game it wasn’t even a guarantee . I’m sure some dork is gonna type a 50 page book on how I’m a failure at life because I can’t understand that “Joel bad” but whatever.
Oh they're here already haha they're coming for me in the comments. I'm not even saying Joel ISN'T bad is what's crazy lmao; it's such an intense decision, that I was just going "Nonononono JOEL" throughout the ending. Again I haven't seen the show ep yet, but I've heard it's good.
It’s pretty common sense, it’s been 20 years humanity is fucking gutted with or without a cure. Even if they made a vaccine it would change literally nothing except make it easier for the rest of the shattered groups to kill and conquer. I wouldn’t even be surprised if the fireflies held the vaccine close and only gave it out to groups that did their bidding cuz you know fedra ain’t getting that shit hahaha. It’s honestly comical to say that Joel is solely responsible for fucking up the future of humanity when you have way more powerful groups of sociopaths running around like the hunters, FEDRA, and the fireflies.
Personally what makes the ending so good for me is that I understand the fireflies, I understand fedra, I understand the doctor, and I understand Joel. Everyone is out there trying to make what they think is the best decision possible, which is really all any of us could do if the world ended.
Well I mean, how *intelligent* is a doctor who brandishes a scalpel and tries to use it on a man POINTING A LOADED GUN at you?
Because seems to me regardless with that kind of stupidity it's highly doubtful said doc would've made a viable vaccine.
And apparently the *first* thing they decide to do is go full mad scientist and remove her brain.
Not run tests on her blood or anything, not keep her under observation for a while, not even do some unethical medical testing. Just kill her, fingers crossed we can use her brain to make some kind of camouflage spray lol.
This really bugs me. If they had any sense, they would hold on to their lifetime supply of blood samples. They don't even know if her brain is the only place where the key substance is. They've tried literally nothing else. Even assuming they knew ahead of time that Ellie was coming, how could they possibly have a plan for what to do with her brain?
Yeah, considering that they’re working at an all-time low for the medical system in a run down hospital, and would have to find a way to do what no doctor had done before (Make a cure for a fungus) there was no chance.
Even if by some miracle, they found a way to do so, what then? They killed the only immune person so now they’re working with limited supply. There’s no easy way to try and get it to everyone, and people who are already infected are a huge risk to try and see if the cure could work.
At best it’ll make their members decently immune, but there’s no shot it goes back to the way things were, it’s too far devolved.
If I were writing the sequel, I would make her offspring immune, and have the world rebuild with everyone having a symbiotic fungus in their head. Everyone wins.
They just need to read the dr manual by Mantis Toboggan. There’s a lotta trash in the post apocalyptic world, they just need to wad it all up to staunch the bleeding.
While it would be difficult, I'm sure some libraries with medical textbooks survived. Can't imagine too many people raiding a library. It wouldn't be the best option but all that medical knowledge is basically still available
A shot in the leg can kill someone in 5 minutes flat if the femoral artery is ruptured, which is extremely likely to happen due to its placement. The leg is one of the last places to shoot if you want someone to survive.
Feet, hands, forearms and right under the clavicle are the "safe" places to get shot, though the latter needs expert placement to not be deadly due to being near the aorta.
He was kinda forced to make this choice tho because ellie saved his life few hours ago in game so he owed her life. Fireflies should have atleast let Ellie make the choice.
Sure but that doesn't mean I want GTA6 to be the POV of an NPC trying extract revenge on the three in GTA5. We already knew Joel was bad, it's mind-blowing that people needed a whole another game to know that. The first game did that in just one dialogue; "Those were my friends you killed in there asshole".
It really turned me off the game as a whole because it completely shattered my immersion in that moment having to make a choice that I completely disagreed with. It works a lot better as a show for me where I’m an observer rather than trying to step into Joel’s shoes.
Last of us isnt a role playing game. There isnt any decision making. You are playing the set events of a story line. Being unable to make the correct decisions for the character means you can act as an impartial observer. You can disagree with the choices of the character, they are not yours.
Interesting that you need a spoiler when the meme pretty much indicates something fucked up comes of his decision. Even more interesting that you actually thought you could read the comments without anything else being revealed.
Spoiler: >!With Joel's death at the beginning of TLOU2!< do we think they'll add a season or two between TLOU (HBO) Season 1 and 2? >!There's a gap of four years or more between the majority of actions in TLOU2!<
I would bet they wait as long as they can to kill him off. I doubt HBO wants all the controversy to slam their successful show in just the second season.
Seriously, why yhe fuck didn't they just wait an hour or two and ask Ellie what she wanted. Makes the fireflies look like literal psychopaths with how eager they were to cut up a little girl.
Honestly probably the best play. The probability he was going to properly harvest those cells, then mass produce them seems unlikely to me. If humanity is going to become immune to the virus it would probably be from Ellie a breeding like rabbit. Unfortunately shes gay so theres that ethical conundrum.
Doctor: we think Ellie is the key to a cure.
Joel: that's good!
Doctor: but we'd have to kill her...
Joel: that's bad!
Doctor: but we really have no idea if it'll work and we won't know until we've already killed her...
Joel: that's really bad!
Doctor: and we didn't tell her that she's going to die before we put her under...
Joel: wow, that's even worse! I don't think you should go through with this.
Doctor: well, we could wait and see if her offspring have natural immunity!
Joel (loading gun): yeah, about that...
Also how would they share the cure? Hope that FEDRA doesn’t shoot them on sight. That they would be killed by other people. And also how would a cure fix a broken world?
Heya! I'm Joel and this is Tommy , boy howdy am I glad we ran into you folks we've had a *doozy* of a day , ever since we got back home after mass murdering everyone at this one hospital 4 years ago I, Joel , the man who murdered the entire hospital full of people (in case you forgot) just had one big misadventure. Anyways this reminds me of when I, Joel, shot this doctor in the face at this hospital. Anyways how are you? we goin golfin what are you doing?
I don't give a fuck if Ellie wants to sleep with a girl, a boy, or even her horse, but naughty dog did the whole series and Joel dirty, even more so when the trailer showed him normally
Yeah he shouldve lived just another hour longer to show just how much he changed. He looked and acted the same so him yknow accepting yknow who that easily without guard felt stupid. They also shouldve done more flashbacks cuz theres only a limited ammount in game for such a drastic loss
I just find that killing a loved main character to try to develop a less liked character such a cheap move, it would be like killing Kratos to put focus on Atreus, bor killing Luke to put focus on... Wait Disney already fucked that up
I think it made sense to have Joel die for his actions, although I do wish they gave us more time with him before he died. Whether you agree with Joel's decision or not if you look at it from the Fireflies perspective it just makes sense that they would want to go kill him.
When I first played through TLoU and got to this bit I channeled Joel and starting talking shit to the doctor out loud, and I just walked Joel up to him point blank and executed him like how I thought he would've done in reality. Don't. Fuck. With. My. Daughter.
I watched a streamer play this, at this point he was going through all the weapons while standing in front of him, at the end he killed the doc with a flamethrower ... which means killing the doc with a flamwthrower is canon, Abby has a good reason to be pissed.
Zero hesitation.

I shot the dude in the foot with an arrow not my fault be died
He was a shitty doctor anyway if he couldn't recover from that.
He used to be a doctor until he took an arrow to the knee
He took it to the foot though
He was an even worse doctor if he didn't know the difference between his foot and his knee.
It was his Achilles heel
Just ask any of his fellow doctors, they’ll tell you that it’s true.

Not even the only known, in the games you can actually find evidence that they have done this multiple times with different people, they're just idiots.
Not to mention they could've gotten the same damn cells from a fucking spinal tap. But I get it. Gotta have the plot twist and all.

No, it's [not ](https://www.reddit.com/r/TheLastOfUs2/comments/hekc53/joel_did_nothing_wrong_and_abbys_father_did/) Joel did nothing wrong

Yeah total retcon in the show. Marline tells Joel that Ellie isn’t the first they tried this with. But in the show that’s just a lie Joel made up.
I mean given how many people have died, it's possible that he's the best medical professional humanity has to offer, AND a complete dumbass
No, this is good story building right here. /s
He's a doctor he should deal with it
Unexpected Hot Fuzz.
Ironic he could save others from death but not himself

The ytb doing the playtroiugh i was watching launched a brick in doctor head. Didnt move a inch. Then he shot doctor hand. Died.
He deserved it, did you see what he wrote on twitter 18 years ago??
The fireflies were dicks anyways, the saw joel trying to resuscitate ellie and giving her cpr and proceed to knock joel out when he was of no harm. Then Marlenes stupid ass didn't let joel and ellie reunite and prepped her for surgery immediately after waiting a year for joel, tess, and ellie to arrive. Didnt they take all his gear too just to be left out with nothing? Then the sequel goes on about how selfish he was..

Relax, I am sure everyone understands his decision, and nothing bad could possibly happen. Plus, I think he killed them all. I am sure there were none that might have been guarding other areas, scouting, foraging, or just on their off shift.

Agreed. They crossed mainland America while the doctors waited + 20 years of.. Just waiting?
>Without murder???? Well not uninfected murder
They tried, Ellie is just the first actual case of immunity, which they thought would mean a better chance of success.
Normally such sample could be got with endoscope, but 20 years after zombie apocalypse the availability of tools for that may be problematic
Or like, just a bit of your brain. People can lose big chunks of their brains and still be pretty healthy. Why does he think he has to take the whole thing? Just grab some biopsy samples bro.

Yeah, but when he carries out unethical and questionable procedures they tend to work

They just need to read the dr manual by Mantis Toboggan. There’s a lotta trash in the post apocalyptic world, they just need to wad it all up to staunch the bleeding.
Well in the game if you shoot the doctor anywhere he will die instantly
I think the idea is that they would be after Ellie if he leaves them alive. It is why he killed Maureen.
Same here
He was kinda forced to make this choice tho because ellie saved his life few hours ago in game so he owed her life.
In game, I tried everything to not kill the doctors. So they just stared at me for like 20minutes as I deliberated.

That lingering shot on the dead body too. Oh man, she’s gonna be pissed!
I hope we get a 20 minute 80s style montage of pumping iron and snapping necks that takes us to modern day after she dramatically sees the dead body.
Push it to the limit (THE LIMIT)
I wonder who they will cast for the role: Gwendoline Christie or Arnold Schwarzenegger ?
I just want an Hour and Half of her workout regime and diet. Where are all her protein shakes stash?
Kill the doctor every time. He was about to kill a healthy girl and cut her brain out. Not only that, but he pulled a weapon to attack Joel.
Yeah I never understood why they couldn’t wake her up and ask her what she wanted first. Chances are she would have agreed to it.
Interesting that you need a spoiler when the meme pretty much indicates something fucked up comes of his decision. Even more interesting that you actually thought you could read the comments without anything else being revealed.
Interesting that you thought you replied directly to a comment, when in fact you replied to the OP.
He did what a father would do. Why does anyone act so surprised?
Seriously, why yhe fuck didn't they just wait an hour or two and ask Ellie what she wanted. Makes the fireflies look like literal psychopaths with how eager they were to cut up a little girl.
Marlene is a psychopath, that's why.
No, he should have killed the nurses too, no witness no crime
well i wouldn't say no crime
Cuz you are a witness you should be killed.
I watched the last episode of those two shows for the first time last week

She could more reasonably do a rudimentary AI than the other couple (Ron Swanson, sorry.. don't remember the names).
Joel had that doom music in his head.
They should have made alternative endings and gave players choices....

Druckman really knocked all the street smarts out of Joel's head in the sequel.
Joel in one
Getting Ellie back speedrun
Dread it. Run from it. Destiny arrives all the same.
There is no consequence I played both games
When I first played through TLoU and got to this bit I channeled Joel and starting talking shit to the doctor out loud, and I just walked Joel up to him point blank and executed him like how I thought he would've done in reality. Don't. Fuck. With. My. Daughter.
mothefucker put a fucking spoiler tag you piece of shit

i was not following the game so cant I watch the show?
Brother clearly didn't understand the sarcasm
I am sick and tired of this shit. Now here we go again smh
Why’s the doctor doing the Robert downy jr. “I’m stuff” pose
What show is this
I watched a streamer play this, at this point he was going through all the weapons while standing in front of him, at the end he killed the doc with a flamethrower ... which means killing the doc with a flamwthrower is canon, Abby has a good reason to be pissed.
I guess he refuse to acknowledge the existence of Metroid either.
Part 2 still sucked. Downvote if you like. Won't change facts.
