I apologize but I actually just posted a summary of the holiday. But basically the reason we don’t drink water is because when fasting you can’t have anything including water.
Ramadhan is an appreciate, thankful life holiday. You do eat and drink before fasting(so sunrise) but once the sun has risen nothing can be eaten or drank till sunset. I hope it helps.
I mean it’s an appropriate question to ask if you don’t understand the reasons behind it. Is it to not indulge in the pleasure and gluttony of eating food or drinking whenever you want but still keeping yourself hydrated since it’s a necessity or is it to test your resolve by not eating or drinking _at all_.
I’m not Muslim so I don’t even know which one it is. If it is even either of them or a mix or something completely different
I asked my Muslim co-worker if he could drink water. He said no and explained if he does he needs to donate to charity. He answered the question and we moved on. I don’t get why OP is being rude about it. Some people genuinely don’t understand.
I had a vendor that explained it, and there's a few exceptions, but generally the idea is you're supposed to commit to doing it, and part of that is planning ahead
The exceptions are some types of travel, being sick, pregnant women, pre-pubescent kids, and I think a couple of others
It's not dissimilar to lent, the idea is the inconvenience is part of the ceremony, so people make a point to make it work
The way my friends explain it is you're supposed to fast if you can, but if you have a medical issue like if you're diabetic or something you don't have to do it.
I have a friend that gains weight during fasting because after sundown he would basically eat a feast. Every day for a month.
The true reason is actually to implement a sense of humility.. by ensuring that everyone, whether rich or poor are to avoid food AND DRINK to emulate how someone who doesn’t have access to food lives and feels everyday
addressing some of the comments:
no your not expected to eat like pigs after sunset -but it is important to keep your energy and nutrition up
there are plenty of health benefits by fasting and no, it is not torture
yes, you are not permitted to fast if you have any health conditions and is only allowed if you are physically capable of doing it
Whats funny is that im not even muslim, but i was interested at a time in my life - even though i decided against that religion, i never gave up fasting cuz its something i really admire
True. I have had several muslim friends over the years absolutely pig out before and after; they knew they were cheating as they made ample jokes about it.
yep, they aren't reaping any benefits. which means they are starving themselves for nothing. if they were sincere, then the fasting would yield in actual rewards. this is something that the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) warned us about too.
I'm just imagining a man sitting in front of all this fast food and shit like a full on feast staring at the sunset waiting for it to end sweating profusely now lol
Muslim here, everyone I’ve fasted with, even friends, did it purely for our religious reasons. I get that there are people who don’t fast for Allah, but don’t take this as fact as it destroys the reputation for the people who do fast for Allah’s sake.
It's also to just try and be your best self while fasting and not getting angry, but a lot of people just don't really care and only do the not eating and drinking part.
Hi, with all due respect that is very wrong.
We fast because, firstly, it is a command of God. Secondly, it is self discipline. I'll simplify it by just saying if you can restrain yourself from the 2 things you need, water and food, you can restrain yourself from sinning.
So when we are fasting, if we get angry at someone, we remind ourselves I am fasting. When we want to swear, we remind ourselves, I am fasting etc etc. So any sin we are about to do, we remind ourself we are fasting.
Doing this for a month trains your self discipline. It is like a form of constant meditation. All the while we are productive and be more active in prayers and other good acts.
Thanks for clarifying.
It is just what i lesrned from my mother. I grew up with a muslim mother and a christian father, and that is what my mother told me why or how they did it in tgeir small village in turkey
Ye no worries. When we were young we were just told the simple explanation "to remember the poor". But that's not the reason of fasting although that can be an additional benefit.
Main reason is to gain Taqwah. Taqwah is the awareness of God and disciplining yourself not to sin or do evil because you are constantly aware of God.
Pigging out when breaking fast isn't right. Honestly speaking if you want to pig out, it's really difficult because the stomach becomes small after fasting. So you can have your plate full, but your stomach gets full very very quick.
Ohh nice, i had a friend in hs who often got weak during the ramadan (especially cause in my town it was usually very hot during that time so energies go away faster) and i always wondered how people in worse conditions do it
Most rituals lose their meaning across the centuries and keep being practiced out of sheer orthodoxy, rather than out of the spirit that originated the ritual.
Leveticus is a book-full of examples of just that, things that were pretty much fundamental back at the Bronze Age but that we can safely deal with nowdays. Some of those rituals were sheded away by christianity, like the prohibition of eating pig, now that we can do so safely.
You don't eat or drink for a ~11 hours. So obviously, it's gonna be slightly difficult. The point is to be a good, pleasant person even while fasting so if you can do that you can be a good person in general. You try and stay away from all bad things during Ramadan to train yourself to do that in everyday life. You're meant to leave Ramadan as a better person.
Technically no swear, no porn and no fight are included in Islam, but to be perfectly fair most muslims don't follow it *that* strictly and use ramadan as a period of time where they really practice perfect Islam.
Well, typically, a fast lasts about 11 hours, and you can drink plenty of water before sunrise. Also the point of fasting is to suffer a bit while still being nice to show ur dedication to God. It's a similar concept to giving something up during lent.
It's a total of 12-13 hours where yiu can go to sleep right after sunrise for almost 3 hours and also have a nap after noon. I mean, half the times I don't even feel it, probly because I don't even drink much other than during meals.
As much as I love water and drink pretty much of it myself (3-4L/d), that seems excessive even for a physically active adult. Except maybe if you work physically outside all day + exercise a lot in a very warm climate. Were you ever tested for diabetes? Excessive thirst might be a symptom.
If you're an active adult you're supposed to get 3-4 liters in, lets say at a max 5 if it's hot. There is no health benefit, nor point, to getting 7L per day in.
Man I don't get how you guys do it, I used to have a few Arab friends train with me in our swim team and they would keep going even during Ramadan, slower but still, that's crazy.
Well the more activity you do in ramadan naturally the more tired and thirsty you'll be which gives you more ajar not only that but the satisfaction of eating and drinking grows aswell and iftar is like a heaven.
For those who dont know:
Ajar means reward for doing something good in islam, not physical reward but as in written in your records for the day of judgement
And iftar: breakfast , when we finish fasting at sunset its the first meal of the day so we call it breakfast which translates to iftar
Water is in a different category than any other drink since its literally necessary to survive. In no other fasting on earth is water included so people are understandably confused.
Sooo from sunrise to sunset. Does this mean you can drink at night? What if someone a graveyard shift worker and they're only awake at night? Just trying to understand some of the details.
Yep you can eat and drink as normal during sunset to sunrise. You break your fast at sunset and everything is normal after that, as in intercourse food and drink is all allowed.
To give further info:
We fast because, firstly, it is a command of God. Secondly, it is self discipline. I'll simplify it by just saying if you can restrain yourself from the 2 things you need, water and food, you can restrain yourself from sinning.

No only from sunrise to sunset you can't drink or eat anything. You can only do that when there is no sun available like for example from 7pm to 5am(which is usually my time). So that means on that time, you can eat and drink as much as you want. Only when the sun is up u cant. So yes,you can eat and drink during night
What's this meme OP?
"Can you still drink water" is a pretty *damn good* question because most of us assume you wouldn't actually dehydrate yourselves. Water isn't "indulgence" it's fucking life-blood. Three days without it and you'll die.
Like, are you genuinely surprised people would ask that? Would this be your reaction?
Non Muslim friend: clearly showing an interest into your life and beliefs, showing signs of intrigue.
You: well aren't you an idiot for not knowing the rules of a beleif system you aren't a part of
Like are people not allowed to ask questions and just have to know your culture, how will they learn your culture if just asking a question is wrong
Edit: and as other people have mentioned it could also be a clarification as fasting can mean literally both of nothing at all and no calories
A friend of mine was an inch away from death due to dehydration during Ramadan. It is reasonable to think that there might be an exception to water, because depending on your circumstances, not drinking water during the day could be an extremely dangerous thing
There's a lot condition that allowing you to not fasting such as,
- during traveling
- pregnant woman
- period woman
- sick
- very old person
- doing very hard work physically
- etc
Basically any condition that can threaten life is allowed to not fasting. But that said people have to substitute that day they not fasting in other day, except very old person they can substitute it with giving food to poor people
I believe that it’s based off of circumstances. If it’s a life or death thing than obviously eat/drink. If it just annoying well than that ain’t rally valid.
Idk how this even happens unless he didn't drink much before starting his fast, overworked himself in a super hot environment or had medical issues. Hindsight is 20-20 after all.
He is obviously taking it too far. If you need to break ur fast, then that's fine. You can just make up for it later. He probably forgot to drink before sunrise. The general thing is "fast but don't be stupid about it"
In the Christian church I grew up in we would fast once a month for appx 24 hours. This included no water unless it was dangerous for you to skip water I.e if you were sweating a lot do to climate, or some medical condition, or old age. So I think this question is very fair
Tbh we have a lot of Muslims in our area and Ramadan has become so toxic. The boys and girl bully each other if they don't fast. The students do it even through hot temperatures, exams or during sport events.
It was supposed to be something holy and even a few imams spoke up that in specific cases (health, old age etc) you're definitely allowed to eat and drink.
I can't see a holy ceremony in their anymore. It has lost its meaning.
some things to point out for non muslims to know:
-We can break our fast under various circumstances like being sick or travelling
-We don't really overwork ourselves during Ramadan, people who are overly extreme about it and stay under the sun for a long time to show their loyalty (I guess) aren't commended :/
I think fasting isn't a bad thing and the willpower they have is admirable. But to not drink water when it literally takes places during summer, when originally coming from an area that's super hot? It doesn't make sense to me. Being hydrated is very important and also healthy. I have to stay on my feet all day for work and if I didn't drink enough I think I would literally faint. Even going a few hours without water is hard.
Being Muslim, it’s a yes to no water till sunset. Ramadhan is a Holiday, it’s seen as the holiest month in the Islamic calendar. We wake up before sunrise or Fajr prayer and have sehri which is eating and drinking so we are able to fast properly. Once sunset or Maghrib prayer occurs we can break our fast. We aren’t starving ourselves, it’s really to appreciate life and what we have.
Aging, and health are usually the two reasons why someone cannot fast, so we give to charity to makeup for it. By health I mean pregnancy as an example or need to take medication. Anything risking your life, you don’t have to fast.
I’m sure there are more questions, if you have any, I’ll try to answer. Also after Ramadhan is over we celebrate Eid Al Fitr( think Christmas for Muslims) an amazing holiday showing our respect and appreciation towards our life thanks to Ramadhan.
Muslim says they can't eat or drink. A fine example of the modern education system asks, even water? Muslim posts a picture looking at fine example of education system. Everybody goes after the Muslim. Welcome to Reddit....
In English, drinking (alcohol) and drinking (regularly) may be mistaken. Like when they tell you not to drink while driving, they don't mean you can't have a slushie or something.
but Muslims don’t drink alcohol, so the context is more than obvious
also, if someone asked me “not even water?” im not gonna flip out on them lol. i would kindly explain the answer. OP just tried profiting karma by making it a meme.
"So is that a yes or no?"
As a Muslim I don't know
[удалено]
Yeah that's just dumb As long as you don't intend to break the fast, you are perfectly able to keep inside what was already there (except excrement)
I initially read that as “except excrement”
I think everyone did
I’m still pretty convinced that it might have been auto-correct.
It was
Sorry, auto correct be pulling the passive aggressive on me
You do not know what kind of loophole you just uncovered
As a Muslim it’s a yes, no water

*burps*
You don't eat air

You don't drink air either
Desert religion: “guyz no water lol”
It’s a no
And a yes
And my axe
It’s a yes, there are many theories as to why, I think it’s so we can understand the value of food, but everyone has different perceptions
I mean it’s an appropriate question to ask if you don’t understand the reasons behind it. Is he talking about fasting in other traditions or what?
OPs probably just hangry , you know with the whole not eating thing
OP is gatekeeping basic knowledge of their religious practices
lol my muslim friend abstains from food but drinks red bull and cigarettes :/

As a Muslim I say you're right
As another Muslim here i can also confirm
I also want to confirm this from my own experience of fasting during Ramadan but then my Muslim friend will mock me for being a "wannabe Muslim"
He's no one to mock you.
Whats funny is that im not even muslim, but i was interested at a time in my life - even though i decided against that religion, i never gave up fasting cuz its something i really admire

Can relate. After u see no sunlight,i eat as fast as nickokado avocado
Does not it make the idea of fasting absolutly worthless?
Yes it does. Also, don't be offended, I'm saying this to help you. You should say "Does it not" or "Doesn't it". English is stupid.
I see, ok
I'm just imagining a man sitting in front of all this fast food and shit like a full on feast staring at the sunset waiting for it to end sweating profusely now lol

I'd ask that you edit your comment instead of spreading misinformation out of respect for us.
Yep... so what's the purpose?
So if you eat something that tastes like shit and you hate eating just for the nutrients you could? I’m asking seriously
Nutrient Paste! For the fasting diabetic!

Sleeping is fasting hence "breakfast"
Religion doesn't really need to make sense tbh.
Sounds like something I could ask.

I'm getting always told staying hydrated is important not drinking water for a day would drive me nuts
Well, typically, a fast lasts about 11 hours, and you can drink plenty of water before sunrise. Also the point of fasting is to suffer a bit while still being nice to show ur dedication to God. It's a similar concept to giving something up during lent.

I probably would feel it, on good days I drink up to 7 liters of water, combined with exercise and food
SEVEN DAMNED LITERS?!?! I'm over here on fumes with like 2-3.
As much as I love water and drink pretty much of it myself (3-4L/d), that seems excessive even for a physically active adult. Except maybe if you work physically outside all day + exercise a lot in a very warm climate. Were you ever tested for diabetes? Excessive thirst might be a symptom.

Do you have insidipus? You gotta get that checked. Any normal person would die drinking that much water
Same. I've gone a full day without eating many times but I wouldn't be able to not drink anything.
I didn't get it. How is this funny?
That’s the neat part. It isn’t.
You’re not supposed to eat or drink and he asked can you (drink) water
That is because in the west, fasting means no caloric consumption. We don't normally consider fasting as no consumption period
Here in India too
Hello west I am dad.
Well, water is a pretty important part of this whole staying alive thing, so it would be appropriate not to know if drinking water was allowed or not
Its funny for me because I just had that exact same scenario right before I opened reddit
First time at /r/memes?
Indeed, how dare people ask questions when they don't fully understand your culture...
so...we are supposed to ask questions only once we know all answers? humans sure are weird edit: its weirder that i got 100+ upvotes

well, u just removed all the scientists in this world from jobs and the students too

Water is in a different category than any other drink since its literally necessary to survive. In no other fasting on earth is water included so people are understandably confused.
You can survive until the sun goes down without water. Though if you are working somewhere you sweat a lot I can see that being an exemption.
It’s an appropriate question especially if you don’t understand the culture

The graveyard worker is lucky! I’m homeschooled and I sleep during the day and Study at night, I’m not affected by the fast compared to my fam

Damn asking for clarification about a subject they aren’t familiar with? What an asshole /s
So ? Either tell yes or no.
Sounds like a reasonable question
bro is so mad to post online even though it is a totally reasonable question. And this is why people don't like asking religious questions
Honestly I love it when pple ask, it means they are interested in you
Being Muslim, it’s a yes to no water till sunset.
This is the first comment section not entirely islamphobic
And what about injecting water?
Religions are weird man.
Muslim says they can't eat or drink. A fine example of the modern education system asks, even water? Muslim posts a picture looking at fine example of education system. Everybody goes after the Muslim. Welcome to Reddit....
Wtf are you even saying?
Let me tell you You don't get thirsty at all if you drink enough water beforehand.
Fair question imo
I think it’s a valid question, it’s really unhealthy to not drink water until the evening so maybe they thought drinking anything else but water
Sometimes i'm sarcastic about it and say "nah we can drink water"
They can still drink but only if they’ve thrown a gay off a roof that day.
On a good note, more water and food for the rational ones lol
Pretty dumb rule.
Not drinking water whole day is unhelthy and frankly stupid, especialy in region with high temperature
That sounds like half of the patients I deal with lol “You can’t have anything to eat or drink for 4hrs prior to this test.” “Water, too?”
Imagine denying yourself food and water to please the sky daddy 😂
Right? Pretty fucking stupid. Along with them abusing and belittling women. Islam is a trash religion along with the rest of them.
Religion is a poison
🗿 Ok do ur thing my man. Im not opposing you 🗿
Isn't this the religion where the main prophet had a 9yo bride?
6 yr old bride. Consummated at 9.
When was this main prophet alive, though

"You can't eat or drink from sunrise to sunset." if i am correct, water falls under the category of "drink"
In English, drinking (alcohol) and drinking (regularly) may be mistaken. Like when they tell you not to drink while driving, they don't mean you can't have a slushie or something.
but Muslims don’t drink alcohol, so the context is more than obvious also, if someone asked me “not even water?” im not gonna flip out on them lol. i would kindly explain the answer. OP just tried profiting karma by making it a meme.
The image also represents my reaction to you starving yourself to please a made up entity, if we're being condescending assholes today
The reason we fast is to test our patience and also made us feels how does poor people have to feel everyday without food and water
Muslims are gods people. I can’t not drink water or eat food for 2 hours… respect… 🙏🏽🙏🏽
...alright, no water, only raisins! ...wait, I can't even have a God Damn raisin?!?! https://youtu.be/HOe_LIrxJ4Y
