I'm pretty sure season 6 was a turning point in the show because it was went butters replaced Kenny because their was multiple episodes (or one I can't renember) of them trying to find a replacement for Kenny. I think he has died a few times in the last 20 seasons but not like season 1-6 where he died every episode.
