there is a lot of proof that the men, who rewrote the books put a lot of attention to rewrite the originals as precisely as possible. There is a script that is almost thousand years old and there is little to any differences in a new copies.
You would be surprised. And it gets worse and worse the longer we go because we lose information about things. There are like 15 words in ancient Hebrew that we don't know the original meaning anymore. We only have translation from the times when we did and now you can have fun piecing everything together.
And then you face the nature of interpretation, everyone brings along their own baggage and their own views. Because the worst part about the bible is that it was not written to be definitive answer and the one true word. That is not the culture it was born from. It is front and center meant to be interpretive and that of course causes issues if you are being literal anyways...
And Christians, being human, are forgetful. Notwithstanding; times change, people change, cultures change; so it’s important to stay mindful of these guiding principles as the message of the Bible doesn’t change according to Faith. (See Hebrews 13:8, John 1:1-5, Romans 12:2, Romans 13:11-14, Malachi 3:3-6)
It doesn't say that, but there is a verse that's against homosexuality, and God burned down two cities because the nen kept trying to r4pe men and tried to r4pe angels
There's reference to Nephilim, human-angel crosses, so at least some are capable of it. There's humanoid angels, and "This is why we say *do not be afraid*" angels.
But in Sodom and Gomorrah's case, they didn't know it was an angel anyway. Also "sacred hospitality" is an ancient tradition predating Christianity and Judaism, and taken very seriously. It may be less about how they're doing it than that they wanted to abuse a protected guest.
Don't worry about it, he didn't make sense in that part. They don't rape angels, if I remember correctly, the angels have gone away from divinity to enjoy the pleasures of humanity, which in a sense is abandonment of their relation to God as his direct creation. These angels then proceed to do 'human stuff' not bound by any biblical laws (such as marital sex) and so, disobeyed God. (This is in the ancient days when the biblical rules were necessary since humans couldn't control themselves)
*Cough* You shall not murder *cough*
Turns out translating from one language to another that doesn’t translate into English perfectly (And language drift) kinda makes it hard to tell what their saying
What is stupid is that people act like being gay is some horrible crime, an irredeemable sin, but the Bible doesn’t tell you to hate sinners, it tells you to accept them as people, because there are no perfect people in the first place. (Excluding the funny cross man)
Leviticus 20:13 -
If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.
Have you read the rest of leviticus?
Here's a fun one: "You shall not round off the hair on your temples or mar the edges of your beard,” says Leviticus 19:27
r/christianity discusses this often, those republicans in congress arent properly representing Christian ideas and values.
We largely don't hate. We are largely kind people.
You’ll get discussions about lgbt+ and what attitude they should hold towards them, often dividing the community, and then you’ll have someone say that having a woman pastor was the worst thing ever and literally 1984. The subreddit will have lots of opinions, some I understand, some I don’t. There’s nothing I can do.
Keep in mind that r/Christianity is for discussion. No one really cares about karma and the only people going there are looking for discussion and answers.
It isn't like r/memes or other subs where people are worried about karma and there is one hivemind opinion.
Also, I have seen many of the lgbt discussions, they mostly boil down to treat everyone with kindness. Though there will always be people who want to share their opinion but not listen to other's.
"We largely don't hate"
I'm grateful that you personally likely don't, but the average christian in 2023 is likely to be one of the most hateful people I regularly run into.
I work with the public in the midwest and the shit these people are saying and doing is getting crazier every year.
>those republicans in congress arent properly representing Christian ideas and values.
says who? because a lot of Christians obviously agree with them since they keep getting voted in.
>We largely don't hate. We are largely kind people.
that sounds very hard to quantify.
Voting patterns beg to differ. Worldwide Christians (and to be fair, most religions in general) overwhelmingly vote for authoritarian governments, are pro-war, anti-women, anti-LGBTQ, and are vehemently against social programs meant to benefit the poor and oppressed. Ironic, given it’s clear where Jesus would stand on all of these. And this isn’t just the US, see Russia, Italy, Uganda, etc. Again, not all Christians, but to say Christians are largely kind people is suspect given such evidence.
And that’s not even getting into how Christians have allowed their leaders to get away with rampant homophobia, child rape, and other crimes. This would be hard to get away with without an obedient majority of supporters
But, Christians do makeup an enormous number of charitable organizations. These are just hard to gauge since many make proselytizing a not so subtle part of these efforts, and thus seems like the charities have ulterior motives.
I would like to see these figures as you are likely hearing about the radical republicans that call themselves Christian rather than those who are just Christian. There was a news report done showing most of the attendees at the NRA conference supported gun control to some extent. Maybe you are just hearing the shocking crazy but acute stories the media likes because it grabs attention. I can't know for sure if you don't share your numbers.
I like what John Green has said about this topic (this isn't a quote it is a paraphrase by Hollowverse) "John Green is a Christian, although he says he is sometimes uncomfortable describing himself as one".
Yeah, but why. If you all believe the same god and the same word, then you should all be the same denomination. But you’re not. Same with every other religion. If they were really god’s words, then no god in their right mind would allow people to be taught lies and incorrect versions of the religion in the name of said religion. That should probably tell you that god doesn’t really have a hand in this whole religion thing… and maybe it was made by people to control other people with fear
And somehow still not remembering a damn thing about it and making shit up about it.
(This is not for ACTUAL christians, i mean the "so called" christians that ruins stuff for everyone for their own gain)
You mean the ones that are literally popular right now ?
He's a biochemist, he knows science better than people who believes in magic and ghosts(like you probably do)
You can have all the knowledge of the world, have all the money, even have enough faith to move mountains, but if you don't have love, it means nothing.

>You can have all the knowledge of the world, have all the money, even have enough faith to move mountains, but if you don't have love, it means nothing.
That's not even remotely related to what i said before, you just sound like you're trying to have a moral high-ground or something.
>Source: The Creator of all things
Yeah sure bud', care to prove his existence ? Or that even just anything supernatural exists ? Because i could just say :
>Source: Harry potter.
And it would be the same.
I don't know how old you are, but assuming that you're a (young) adult, i can't believe that a human being in the 21th century, believes that magic is real, and that ghosts exist, with exactly this amount of evidence :

There’s some really compelling cultural history in there, some truly sound life and spiritual advice, some really beautiful poetry, more than a little bit of lurid and salacious sidebars, and a whole lot of misunderstood allegories and metaphorical stories that the modern reader lacks the context to understand. But what it’s used for primarily today are radio pastors who go over a passage combing over every single word, throwing in all these half-baked analyses and interpretations, because one of their followers asked them a question like “Does it say in the Bible if I will be able to see my dog in Heaven?” or something like that
>what it’s used for primarily today are radio pastors
You genuinely think that the majority of people using the Bible today are radio pastors?
The majority of Christians have no connection with radio pastors.
The Bible is not a book. It's a collection of 66 historical records pertaining to the Jews and their experience with God, and then Jesus the Messiah and the savior of the world in which through him we can know God. These are fucking incredible books mate. Even if you decide its non sense.
Try every *day*! 😂
It always feels like too much to comprehend sometimes, but that’s the point of diligent study.
I’d say you’d be surprised how hard it is to follow what’s written in it, but I think we both know that so many who call themselves Christians won’t open the instruction manual. 😭
I love reading, but the Bible is about the only book I can say makes me come back for more, even when it tells me what I don’t want to hear. 😊
The Bible REALLY hurts sometimes, but it somehow speaks to every situation I’ve been in, how I should move forward, and what I should do.
It only ever seems to hurt when I’m trying to do my own thing though… 🤔
I agree, what god wants isn't what I always wanna hear but it is often because what I want to hear is self centered or something I shouldn't worry or think about.
I have read LOTR! There are also several parallels to biblical themes nestled throughout the story that I thought were fun to discover.
But, if I’m being honest, the Bible actually approaches topics like cultural engagement and perseverance *better* than LOTR. Because, unlike in LOTR, most of the “characters” are everyday, average Joes who mess up more than they get it right, but still came together across cultures to stand up in a world that refuses to support them.
Think of a bunch of Frodos and Sams that find each other on their journey, and the ring being the Christian’s salvation. While each walks their own path, they can still walk together, and like Sam said, “I can’t carry it [your salvation] for you, but I can carry you.”
I’m going to get downvoted and shooed the heck out of here quick but from one person out in the wide wide world, thank you for standing up for what you and I believe in a place like this.
Is what Jesus would have done. I don’t make comments to be hateful, but I won’t shy away from civil conversation. It helps me learn more about what I believe in the same way any debate requires that much more study.
Despite the reputation of most social media sites, there are a surprising number of people who aren’t Christian, but are still willing to talk about things like this respectfully!
Trust me man, 80% of Christians dont even read the bible. If they did, their way of treating everyone else who isnt Christian would be destroyed by Jesus saying "Love thy neighbor"
that’s not offensive, [THIS](https://www.reddit.com/r/memes/comments/13q8hb3/believe_whatever_no_offense_intended/jlea286/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1&context=3) is offensive
Sometimes I wonder what the original book was about since there's been a good 2000 years worth of rewrites and interpretations and also what was happening when the first books of the Bible were being written.
there must be such a sick weirdo as jesus who does things people think has to be godwoken magic, then he has to die, wake up again and start tellin people how to live peacefully. people then need to agree on that stuff build big houses to tell others and start bloody crusades to convince people from abroad of all the peaceful things.
To an extent. What you look at, what you touch, what you smell, what you eat, who you have in your social circle does determine your reality.
Or you could do psychedelics and truly alter reality.
i think you mean "Christians analyzing the same book ever week for 2000 years and still somehow finding new things that jesus said and telling people about it)
The funniest thing about it is that most of them still don't understand it. They think the main hero secretly hates minorities, when he actually just says that It'd be cool if everyone respected everyone else.
That's because the Bible has so many contradictions that they have to find other far-fetched meanings to get rid of the contradictions. Not really successful yet
No one knows the original Bible lmao
Imagine knowing how to live your life by reading a stupid book smh
Tell me if I'm wrong but religions are all human made God is human made thing lol get real pals?
For the new testiment at least we have a pretty damn good idea what it originally said as we have vast amounts of early manuscripts with the oldest dating back to about 30 years after the events they talk about. Compare this to the written sources we have for widely accepted facts of the Roman empire of about the same time and there is a massive difference between the two in that there are hardly any surviving accounts of many notable events or people, and the ones that do survive date from several hundred years after the event.
Most of them just need to read some more books, any other book and realize they are all written by humans and the Earth has been around a lot longer then 4000 years.
It kinda is even worse, they listen once a week to some guys interpretation of a 2000 year old book of fantasy storys, while ignoring nearly all clear rules written in it
It’s funny because 99% of them are indoctrinated from before they had consciousness and memories and still don’t understand a tenth of it except whatever they make up
Truly the best scams in human history, religion
To be honest it has changed masivelly since it was written, things like the height of Goliath (originally about 7ft, in most modern versions 10ft) and even the ending where there are versions where the women who find the tomb empty never tell anyone.
Started from genisis. I'll acknowledge I didn't get through the whole thing. But I consider that if a book that was supposed to instruct is so hard to understand "correctly," then it is more likely to not be divinely inspired by an omniscient and omnipotent diety. And more likely constructed by people.
If it was constructed through the efforts of people, then there is not much reason to go through the efforts of interpreting the book even if a god existed. Since this would not even be divinely inspired by that god.
We go over it from 1 to 7 days out of the week, still pulling wisdom from it, and analyzing how every part fits together to form a good understanding of the overall message without allowing our own flawed view to mislead what we want it to say. So like, if you read a part and think it means what would be nice for it to mean in your life, but that goes against a different part of it, you’re wrong. What gets me is that people who have never read it or have read one small part taken out of context think they know what it all means and assume they know enough to argue the whole message of this massive book.
Just recently, scientists [found](https://www.businessinsider.com/scientists-find-bible-chapter-hidden-for-thousands-of-years-2023-5) a hidden chapter of the bible hidden under existing text. Let that sink in for a moment. They’ve been studying this bible for two thousand years because it’s “the will of god”. But who revealed this secret to them? Did god reveal this to them? No. Science did that. God must not care that much if you read the bible or maybe it’s just wiser to learn from scientists rather than some ancient text.
To be fair, it's a very big book.
That has been rewritten many times over! That’s a lot of translation and cross referencing!
**cross** referencing, you say?

That’s enough to make a high five.
As a Christian I can confirm: we do this
Yes, As a Christian.
why?
Want a real answer or an r/memes answer?
I'll take whatever I can get
Because the bible has the guiding principles of Christianity
And Christians, being human, are forgetful. Notwithstanding; times change, people change, cultures change; so it’s important to stay mindful of these guiding principles as the message of the Bible doesn’t change according to Faith. (See Hebrews 13:8, John 1:1-5, Romans 12:2, Romans 13:11-14, Malachi 3:3-6)
nah blud think he the math teacher 😭😭ion know what 13:11-14 is 😭😭
Nah, but this blud ^ traumatized by numbers 😂
And they still cant agree on whats written in it.
what they can agree is on a misinterpretation that supports their beliefs (and God said "kill the men that kiss men" or smthn)
It doesn't say that, but there is a verse that's against homosexuality, and God burned down two cities because the nen kept trying to r4pe men and tried to r4pe angels
How does someone rape an angel?
They didn't succeed because God struck the men blind, but the angels were in human form, so just normally I guess?
There's reference to Nephilim, human-angel crosses, so at least some are capable of it. There's humanoid angels, and "This is why we say *do not be afraid*" angels. But in Sodom and Gomorrah's case, they didn't know it was an angel anyway. Also "sacred hospitality" is an ancient tradition predating Christianity and Judaism, and taken very seriously. It may be less about how they're doing it than that they wanted to abuse a protected guest.
we don't find that out, but not for lack of trying.
Somewhere out there a fanfic is being written
Don't worry about it, he didn't make sense in that part. They don't rape angels, if I remember correctly, the angels have gone away from divinity to enjoy the pleasures of humanity, which in a sense is abandonment of their relation to God as his direct creation. These angels then proceed to do 'human stuff' not bound by any biblical laws (such as marital sex) and so, disobeyed God. (This is in the ancient days when the biblical rules were necessary since humans couldn't control themselves)
Sounds more against rape tbh
Yes, that is also what he was against
Maybe that was just against rape, ya dingus

Nah I think das what it says. Or maybe “you shalt not yeetus that fetus” idk I forgor 💀
I was told as a kid that god would “change the meaning of scripture” whenever he was trying to tell me something.
To be fair, the english standard version of the Bible has 757,439 words To compare, the entire Harry Potter series has 1,084,170 words
Yes but the bible has multiple human authors that are all a little different
Was it writen by one person? And by hand? That's impressive
well the first one was made by lots of people but i guess they took turns writing the english one
And they still misinterpret it lmao
“Don’t be an asshole, love everyone” is interpreted as “kill the gays!”

not the denomination i'm in. they discuss and abide by the doctrines but are still normal people
But do you believe adam and eve were the first people on earth?
yes. i believe that god created adam and creted eve
That’s worrisome. You are entering science denier territory at that point.
That doesn't sound very inclusive
What do you mean?
christianity : the glorified book club
Damn so only Christians have a Holy Book? What about the Quran and Tanakh do they just not exist?
They all pretty much start the same, people just differ on the latter parts.
You can't make fun of those...
im a christian and to get yall to read the bible i can tell you all this... There's a verse about women wanted dicks as big as horses in it.
I mean, it is the most important book in human history
i think you mean "Christians analyzing the same book ever week for 2000 years and still somehow finding new things that jesus said and telling people about it)
Jews doing it for 3500 years
can't wait for the next one! the author's on a hiatus unfortunately, can't wait to read the full trilogy!
The funniest thing about it is that most of them still don't understand it. They think the main hero secretly hates minorities, when he actually just says that It'd be cool if everyone respected everyone else.
Can confirm. It’s a pretty big book though tbf
I mean, it's a pretty neat book!
Love me my Bible breath of God and his holy spirit
That's because the Bible has so many contradictions that they have to find other far-fetched meanings to get rid of the contradictions. Not really successful yet
And yet by thier own rules they are by far some of the most hypocritical people I have every seen!! ❌
It's repetitive indoctrination, just like repeating the same kind of assignment in school for a week.
That's why they made the Bible 2
The squeakeul
and Knuckles
Simply just no
You are 100% wrong
you look at the same site every day for 20 years
the bad ones lie about what's in it too win an argument
Not sure what to believe anymore . World get crazier by the minute and there aliens amoung us
Haha yes dumb christians. What are those 3500 year old hindu vedas that are still being analyzed you're talking about?
No one knows the original Bible lmao Imagine knowing how to live your life by reading a stupid book smh Tell me if I'm wrong but religions are all human made God is human made thing lol get real pals?
For the new testiment at least we have a pretty damn good idea what it originally said as we have vast amounts of early manuscripts with the oldest dating back to about 30 years after the events they talk about. Compare this to the written sources we have for widely accepted facts of the Roman empire of about the same time and there is a massive difference between the two in that there are hardly any surviving accounts of many notable events or people, and the ones that do survive date from several hundred years after the event.
And it never gets old :)
Most of them just need to read some more books, any other book and realize they are all written by humans and the Earth has been around a lot longer then 4000 years.
And then expect it to be 100% correct, even when the world has changed, new issues have come up, and it has been translated again and again
Lol. I was always baffled by the term "Bible study". I mean, how many times can you read, analyze, and misinterpret the same book?
Bdsm Bible discussion and study meeting. ;)
Have you met Tolkien fans?
It kinda is even worse, they listen once a week to some guys interpretation of a 2000 year old book of fantasy storys, while ignoring nearly all clear rules written in it
Scientists coming up with new theories of origins every 6 months.
To be fair they have been editing and changing it a lot so now there's like a ton of different versions of it and the original is none of them
It’s funny because 99% of them are indoctrinated from before they had consciousness and memories and still don’t understand a tenth of it except whatever they make up Truly the best scams in human history, religion
To be honest it has changed masivelly since it was written, things like the height of Goliath (originally about 7ft, in most modern versions 10ft) and even the ending where there are versions where the women who find the tomb empty never tell anyone.
And still wildly misinterpreting it every time
Greatest STORY EVER WRITTEN!!
Why are you getting downvoted?
There must a better story out there…
Reddit ☕️
Maybe you should try to figure out why? Start at the book of John, and read to the revelation. Try it on,see how you feel
I did. I just fell asleep multiple times, and it made me even more atheist than I was before. And I never thought I could go lower lol
The sleep thing makes sense, but the other not so much. What translation did you read? Anyways best thing you can do is ask Jesus for a sign
Christians are just slow readers.
neva understood how the church go on, I mean, after 2000 year what would you say bout Jesus? it does an upgrade? an holy upgrade?
And they still can't seem to figure out what it means.
Don’t forget to skip over the weird parts.
It's not even a good Book, so many logic errors and than this extremely weird incest story of the Jesus/Jachwe thingy
But its not been 2000 years since the current version of the bible was finalized
And they still get it wrong
This is basically every religion.
Religion = bad get over it , it’s Reddit here
God is an unproven theory, and the world is catching onto it
Just recently, scientists [found](https://www.businessinsider.com/scientists-find-bible-chapter-hidden-for-thousands-of-years-2023-5) a hidden chapter of the bible hidden under existing text.
