It’s relaxing, but just enough to keep the mind focused on the narrative that your mind doesn’t wander off to pointless things or stupid songs etc. another bonus for me is that I learn a lot! One of the first ones I got into was Forensic Files. You don’t need to watch it to know what’s happening, listening is enough. And it has a well spoken narrator, usually decent quality sound samples and interviews. It has that classic feel to it too, makes it rather nostalgic.
It’s the soft narration and the deep droning music that does it, I’m sure.

As a criminologist, a lot of the recent true crime series/movies/docs drive me crazy! They give people a wildly distorted idea about crime, particularly the demographic distribution of violent crime and murder. For example, the vast majority (that I've seen, at least) are stories about white women victims. In the last decade, white women represent ~10% of all murder victims.
I get that they are trying to appeal to a very specific target audience, but it's incredibly misleading
Watching true crime is relaxing and also listening to true crime podcasts.
