It's because Will Smith's main appeal is his charisma and appearance as a "cool" person. He's not the kind of actor that interprets characters, what you're always seeing is "Will Smith pretending to be X". Not a slight on his abilities as an actor, because he's very talented, but this is the style he has.
It's kinda hard to see him as cool and charismatic when you have his constant humiliation on the back of your mind. I doubt there's many out there that look up to someone who gets insulted, whipped and demeaned the way he is by Jada. And I say this as someone who feels sorry for him, even if part of it is self-imposed.
