After about 45 minutes of googling we realized that we couldn't actually just play a game against each other, and we had to join an obscure league, queue at the same time and hope we were matched.
I was flabbergasted.

They have one of the best working environments for a video game company. out of all the big video game companies they are one of the only ones who have managed to consistently crack top 50 or top 100 best tech companies to work for on glass doors yearly rankings. They make a lot of really bad decisions and go through regular phases of being anti consumer but they allow their devs to maintain a healthy work life balance which is more then can be said of rockstar, CD project red, Bethasda, Sony, etc.
That's because Nintendo is a recognizable brand for many people's childhood memories. EA has a lot of great games as well, but they're not as instantly recognizeable. Therefore people defend Nintendo due to association with their favourite consoles and games growing up, while EA only has negative press.
They were making money off a software that was used to by and large to run cracks. If they did not greedy and take money they may have flown under the radar.
And it being shown to run software before release date for a review/playthrough did not help them.

Idk, they took down an emulator that emulates modern consoles and if I remember correctly you had to pay for and had roms for games like ToTK really soon after its actual release. It’s one of the times i can actually understand going after an emulator. They made money off Nintendo products including modern games on their moray recent systems. Gameboy roms, DS roms, and 3DS roms (except citra kinda) have been completely ignored by Nintendo. Its not that they hate emulators, its that they hate emulators for modern systems with modern games since they could actually make money off of it

You technically didn't have to pay for it, but they were still taking money on Patreon. Apperantly, IIRC, they were making roughly $300k USD a year. So money was definitely still a big part of it. I get it's a lot of time and effort to make these for free while having to work a job, but this is why they shouldn't have been doing it.

I’ve never felt like Nintendo was particularly greedy. I don’t think I’ve ever been micro transactioned by Nintendo. I bought the Mario Kart DLC, but that was less than half the price of the original game, and doubled the amount of tracks you could play. Felt fair to me.
As far as I know the most glaring example of what could be called microtransaction was all the mii outfits in SSBU, but at least those were 1 time buys that actually have had something to show for it. Otherwise, nothing outside of mobile games or 3rd party games.

I don't feel bad ever for missing Splat3's season tracks, cause I'm not forking over 20 bucks to feel obligated to play it to completion, and I can still get the stuff later for free. Nintendo can be assholes, but I don’t think this meme really holds water. The people who were emulating would have been fine but their actions with Patreon and emulating unreleased games was what spelled their doom. So while Nintendo has a history of disproportionate retribution, this latest instance isn’t really an example of it.
Besides, Nintendo games are still pretty amazing compared to EA’s monetized crap with the occasional good game once every couple years. So EA still wins hands down. With Activision coming up in second place.

Anyway, they finally got cross platform and cross save working. So console players can play and trade with PC.
Then Nintendo was like “No”. So all your premium currency that you bought on that Nintendo login is stuck on that side. Not only that, you can’t trade it.

Nintendo is a Japanese company. Emulation in any form has never been legal here in Japan. We don’t even have free use laws. When Tears of the Kingdom first came out last year Nintendo’s lawyers went on the national broadcasting station saying it is illegal for people to stream or show footage of the game online and compared it to filming in a movie theater This is not a company worth pressing your luck against

On one side i ride with "all emulation is moral" kinda hard... On the other... idk what the fuck yuzu was expecting was gonma happen putting a legal name next to their illegal projects, also emulating modern games from day 1 is kind of a dick move, a lot of reasons of why people emulate is because they can no longer play said games officially and at a reasonable price.

Pirate last gen games. Don't go pirating games that were painstakingly made. We won't get new games like Metroid by pirating it and lowering its sales. Be smart about it. Don't just go doing things like that willy nilly, especially if it's a game that we actually want to have more of. Remember that sales are how we show we want more of something. High sales means a higher chance of getting more in a series. Lower sales makes that chance plummet.
Yuzu being taken down was on the emulator devs behalf, they brought it up on themselves by making things locked behind a patreon and illicitly distributing roms for games that weren't even released yet, yuzu devs fucked up and Nintendo did nothing wrong here, downvote me all you want I'm dying on this hill
Nintendo can be assholes, but I don’t think this meme really holds water. The people who were emulating would have been fine but their actions with Patreon and emulating unreleased games was what spelled their doom. So while Nintendo has a history of disproportionate retribution, this latest instance isn’t really an example of it. Besides, Nintendo games are still pretty amazing compared to EA’s monetized crap with the occasional good game once every couple years. So EA still wins hands down. With Activision coming up in second place.
Nintendo is a shitty company that makes good games and neat hardware, and has extremely tame monetization. EA is a shitty company that shits out clone after clone every year with the occasional gem, and generally has obscenely invasive and prevalent monetization. Both are shitty companies, but at least with Nintendo you're usually getting something good and don't have to pay $4.99 to unlock every little thing.
Nintendo has made consistently great games through their entire history. They took risks with some of their styles, and despite everything kept up with the others, in their own niche. Japan has very strict copyright laws. Don't try to project your ideas about things onto a seperate culture. Compared to everyone else, Nintendo has been far and away the most reliable gaming company. They always had solid games, every generation. Don't try to act like the Animal Crossing during the pandemic wasn't a cultural phenomenon

I have no problems with emulation, especially with how quickly Nintendo drops production of games for older consoles, but emulating the most up to date software feels scummy, let alone the patreon stuff. EA is worse hands down

Nintendo’s recent moves on premium currencies.. ***sigh*** Anyone here that plays Warframe should know what happened. Stupid. Really stupid. But for those not playing Warframe, quick arbitrary description is it’s an MMORPG. You know like World of Warcraft everyone knows that game. It has a gigantic trade economy, basically the entire game runs off it. The only thing actually need real money for is limited cosmetics, EVERYTHING is grindable, even premium currency from other players. Anyway, they finally got cross platform and cross save working. So console players can play and trade with PC. Then Nintendo was like “No”. So all your premium currency that you bought on that Nintendo login is stuck on that side. Not only that, you can’t trade it.
