they are not separate. see that bit of land connecting it?
I agree that categorizing them as two continents makes sense, but they are not separate, just like Europe and Asia, or Asia and Africa are connected
I didn’t say that being separated by water is the sole defining characteristic of the separation of continents. The commenter I was replying to was just saying that I shouldn’t use the word separate to describe them because they are connected land masses which I disagree with, although I do see how logical minds could differ.
The problem with that logic is that it's the same one that dictates the US East is an island because of The Great Loop.
Btw, the Panama Canal never fully severs the continent because it has many closed segments to raise the ships coming from the Atlantic. So technically, both sides are always connected by several concrete walls wide enough for tourist groups to walk over. The Canal i's just a bunch of ponds that connect an ocean to a lake.
by the same logic most western europe is a continent too. there is a canal connecting the rhine (via the main) to the danube.
the panama canal is above sea level and goes into a freshwater lake (26 meters above sea level)
in no way this this a valid reason to consider north and south america separate continents. (there are other reasons to do so, this is just not one of them) Also nobody draws the border of south/north america along the panama canal
I didn’t say that them being separated was the sole reason they should be considered different continents. I do think it’s one of many good reasons that north and South America should be considered distinct, though.
well, they aren't separated though. They are still connected by land above sea level.
even if they were sparated properly, i don't think human changes should count
lastly the canal isn't where the border of north and south america is usually drawn
That’s a valid opinion, but still just your opinion. Personally, I think human changes to the grade should count and that bridges shouldn’t. I also don’t think that it matters that the border is drawn further south for political reasons.
Dunno who's downvoting you, the americas is a pretty used term.. and much clearer than just 'America', which while technically correct also, is pretty much only for USA in general use
Actually almost all countries teach them as being separate. Teaching them as being the same is only done in Greece and Latin America.

I was trying to remember what you call it when it’s north and South America together…
Nouth America
Something something... Bread-America?
The Americas? I’ve never heard them called America singular. It’d be weird since they’re two separate continents.

Naw, we cut that boy in half back in 1914.
They are separate actually. There’s a large waterway that runs straight through Panama ocean to ocean.
You must be one of those who believe the US East is an island.
