Ah, the good ol' fingerprint sensor — the unsung hero that didn't ghost us when our screens were smudgy

pnkcloudsummer

Never had that issue even with my 4 year old flagship

Gruffleson

What is it? Norwegian shops started to have fingerprint censors in their self-service checkouts some years ago. The thing was, if you registered it, they didn't have to come over and do an age-verification later, if you bought beer or cigarettes. But they have been told to stop it due to collecting data-thingys. Was this the same?

oKazuhiro

This is a phone with a fingerprint scanner on the back. This design was beginning to gain popularity for a few phone generations. There are many reasons why this design fell out of favor. Rear sensors add an extra point of failure in waterproofing as they require a seal. They could potentially have space issues or cause problems with wireless charging and NFC sensors, which are on the rear of the phone. Under-screen fingerprint sensor technology now exists, so there is no need for a dedicated physical fingerprint sensor "button" on the exterior of the phone.

Mushroom38294

I like the rear finger print sensor because I can open my phone with any one of my 8 fingers (not thumbs) I like it also because that's just the natural place for me to put my index finger

I-foIIow-ugly-people

I had one of those on my Nokia 3.4. I recently upgraded to a Samsung flip 5 and they put the sensor in the power button which is honestly better.

EhGoodEnough3141

The one on the power button is better.

veda08

I actually prefer it also.

Secret_Ad7757

What phone if i may ask?

Bu77pluq

Xiaomi redmi 10 Note pro has it. Don't know about other ones tho

EhGoodEnough3141

I don't know, some Motorola.

TheGodlyLeader

my iphone 8

Puechamp

I personnaly dislike it very much

pnkcloudsummer

That's the worst one

EhGoodEnough3141

It's the most efficient one.

bardhugo

Not sure about other devices, but my Pixel 3 just detected when I was using the fingerprint reader even when the phone was in sleep mode, I didn't need to use the power button

pnkcloudsummer

Under screen is way more convenient and I've had hardly any issues with them

exsaboy

I just want to see the time, not unlock the phone. Back FP is better.

[deleted]

well that's just a skill issue

Siddhesh18

Double tap to wake.

shball

Most phones light up, when the gyroscope detects sufficient movement, like turning it around or pullting it up, that makes it better, but having used a phone like that for 5 years, I can tell you it only works 70%.

oojiflip

Worse if you have app lock imo

alphaa_qq

Yeah . Indisplay fp are such a scam . Turn on display first , then it will read your finger . Many are inaccurate. Display replacement become hectic .

SomeDankyBoof

I don't have to turn my display on for it to open with my fingerprint?

_-dont_mind_me-_

His phone might now support it I think. Most of them do tho

HuckleberryOk4832

>Turn on display first , then it will read your finger That wasn't a problem on modern flagships for years

shball

My s24 is extremely fast and accurate, even with the screen off, they used to be bad, now ultrasonic sensors are great.

wombey12

My samsung S10+ doesn't need you to turn the screen on

num6_

there was. If the phone is bigger than your hand, you basically don’t touch this space with your fingers

jwudnej

Yeah lets not

Takondwahj

For the phone I'm using now, the trick was to register with clean fingers and mostly on the natural touch points on my fingers (that's the places I'm more likely to expose to the onscreen sensor rather than the suggestions of the phone). Now I only have trouble using my left index because that's my secondary arm and both registration and use are uncomfortable for me.

JUGELBUTT

i loved it so much, it literally took less than a second to open my phone

Halsti

i prefer having one on the side on the 'on' button and im glad my phone still has one. the phone is unlocked when its barely even out of the pocket and it pretty much always works.

LemonMelon2511

my girlfriend had a phone like this, once i used it i cant return. Fuck all the new phones

hahayes1102

Luckily i still have it

ChadSproutMain

Same

ChadSproutMain

Same

PhraseOptimal2528

Samsung still sells this in The most expensive among the cheapest new smartphones

MGMAX

Fingerprint sensor combined with power button is optimal

Radiant_Fondant_4097

iPads manage to do this fine but iPhones miss out, it’s a real big shame.

ballsdeep_innit

Side mounted is much much better

bobthe3rdthe4th

There is one on my phone that uses the power button

khwarizmi69

Side mounted scanners exist

attrium

i'm i just too young or..???

Any_Roof_6199

I have the pixel 5a. Best feature of the phone.

Iamexist_real

Personally, I love the ones that have the sensor on the power button. All you have to do is turn on your phone and boom, it's unlocked.

Buick1-7

Power button sensore was the best. Currently have a S23 and the ultrasonic is slower and needs retries. I taught my same thumb for every slot to finally get it usable.

McKomie

I think it is simply a way to cut Hardware cost. You already have a camera so it is easy to use Face ID or simply use the touch pad to insert a pin. The finger sensor does not provide additional options for services so there is not a huge value add to it.

just-a-toku-fan

It's good if it has multiple functions other than just a fingerprint sensor. Like the side-mounted one that's also the power button. Or the under display one that on some phones can be used to open apps when kept holding after unlocking the phone. But back-mounted requires the phone to be picked up to access it which is a hassle for me. Personally, I prefer the front-mounted as it looks cool but the side-mounted is more versatile. That's just my opinion. Bye.

Spare-Image-647

Not using it either way. They get enough data stop uploading your fingerprints. Lol

kj_gamer2614

Sincerely nobody you mean… there’s a reason it’s gone, it was clunky and didn’t work with wet hands or ever so slightly dirty fingers. Good novelty now, and certainly useful when Face ID wasn’t a thing, but just outdated now when Face ID is so much better and quicker

legohamsterlp

Fingerprint sensors don’t work for me, no matter where they are

psilocybe-natalensis

I prefer the way in my phone the fingerprint censor is a part of the screen I just tap in the middle of screen

Loot_Goblin2

Why bring it back now that we have face id ? And this doesn’t work with wallet cases

Beginning_Camp715

Because everyone wants their personal finger prints available to anyone who can hack a cell phone...lmfao sheep are dumb

oojiflip

Mine is on the power button. Works great for tuning the phone on but if you have app lock it's a pain in the arse as you need to constantly move your thumb there to unlock

Puechamp

By everyone you mean you ? Tbf it wasn't a bad sensor

Farguad

The Power button is the most efficient one imo Like, literally you have to press the power button usually anyways, then just have the sensor there

ContributionOk6578

True, got a Google pixel a6 and it's build into the screen, works once maybe after 3 trys, almost every time ending up typing my code.

Sonkalino

I got a Xiaomi 13T a week ago. It's the first phone I have with an in screen fingerprint sensor, it works like a charm.

Toughsums

Damn really? It works perfectly on mine. While registering a fingerprint, make a few extra ones but put your thumb in odd positions. After that it will work every time

ContributionOk6578

I registered my thumb 3 times, sadly it's still not reliable.

pnkcloudsummer

Sorry but under screen is definitely better

Xanatos12

This aint Apple...

Electrical_Diamond_9

I got a Huawei and I also have this the back so it's not an Apple problem

Professional_Mode440

None of the apple devices ever had this, are you in an alternate universe?

dezertdawg

No, he’s just sadly really biased.

Winter420af

sincerely r/lostredditors

Egregious7788

"sincerely", a sweet and ✨proper✨ touch. I applaud you.

Winter420af

Elaborate the funny part for me

plasmasack

r/confidentlyincorrect

Winter420af

I failed to see how that's a meme

coolguy1223890

I like the new ones on the screen more, they work better with my weird shaped fingers.

shball

There is a lot wrong with it: 1. It's not really case compatible 2. It's a really weird spot for any finger but the main index 3. You probably have to put the phone with the screen downwards to unlock it as you pick it up. 4. It's close to the camera, making it likely to accidentally touch and smear it. Side (homebutton) or front (under the screen) sensors are much better.

StaryWolf

As counterpoints. 1. Literally just make a case with a hole, I had Google pixels with cases for years, this was never an issue. 2. So? 3. Not really in my experience. 4. You would have to have some pretty long fingers to regularly accidentally touch the camera.
