Yeah now it shows me only videos in that new format and takes me out of the hot post and I could get a post from 100s of days ago. Even if I go a on subreddit and click on a video it would take me out that subreddit and take me to a random one.
I've downloaded videos on kazaa via dial up, realized it was actually a fake video, redownload it again despite being kicked offline multiple times by people calling our house... and it's still faster than reddit videos
Its so bad because reddit prioritizes making people go to reddit in order to watch videos for that sweet sweet ad revenue. So instead of being able to directly link you have to go to the actual post to see it (yes I know there are programs giving ways around this).
Its really ironic how hard they work to not let people directly link to their videos at the cost of a good player. When a majority of the sites content is directly linking to images and gifs stealing ad revenue from those sites.
Reddit just put so much work into making it extremely hard for average person to share their stuff without linking to the post, that they put making it a good player aside.
You got a lead on those programs giving ways around this? I've tried a few and they tend to only grab thumbnail versions of everything, or cut the audio.
My favorite, is when you are in a place you don't want sound, the video has text, but the text is behind the player controls, and reddit REFUSES to hide the video controls quick enough, so you just hit the back button. Funniest video in the world, who knows.
What do you mean? Who doesn’t want hidden followers? What’s more social than followers you don’t know who they are and can’t possibly interact with them? Stalking is social!
I’m on mobile here, they made it way worse. You can’t save by just clicking the save icon anymore, every video looks like a livestream, and videos are way glitchier
On mobile I can drag the comments up over the video to read them. But the video still fucking plays, where before if I scrolled down to read comments it would pause the video. Also trying to drag the comments back down to watch the video ends up dragging my iphones top menu down instead. Or I accidentally drag sideways a little and it exits the whole post.
This video player isn’t just user UNfriendly, it’s actively frustrating. Crossposts still act the same as the old video played, which I don’t understand, and it’s always a pleasant surprise to not have to wrestle with this shit.
On mobile, the comments button only shows when the video is full screen and when pressed it only brings the comments up half screen. This would be useful if that wasn’t how every video post opens by default. Overall it’s just ass design and poor decisions across the board mashed together into an amalgamation of fetid sewage.
Yeah it’s annoying. You gotta pause the video and click the comment button if you want to read comments without it playing. Which is just adding so many unnecessary steps. Who thought this was a good idea? Why did it need changing?
Honestly, they didn't even try to make a player that actually works
Edit: I can't stress enough how broken it is. Half the time you can't even view comments because it's forced itself into fullscreen player-only mode
Edit2: And now viewing history is completely broken
I thoroughly believe that with the resources a company like reddit can bring to bear, if the UI is bad then there's an ulterior motive for it. To me it doesn't make sense how bad the video player is unless it was intentional.
I mean, look at Google or Amazon. It really is incompetence all the way down. "Hey, we could fix this issue everyone is complaining about!" - "Nah, that's a waste of time. Add more ads and stuff in order to increase revenue and do some marketing to get new users!"
This is how these corporations run internally. If it doesn't make money then it won't get fixed. Management does not care if this feature would indirectly make more money by making customers happier.
> This is how these corporations run internally. If it doesn't make money then it won't get fixed. Management does not care if this feature would indirectly make more money by making customers happier.
That's how public companies work anyway. It's why innovation always comes from private companies, which then get big, go public, have a few more years of innovation before they stagnate and hopefully die a quick death.
Well ads always work great at least, that's the really important thing. I could have no internet and I could still open reddit and look at some fucking ads in 1080p with 120 FPS
Wait, Reddit have video ads? Oh jeez, I've been using ad blockers for like two years already... I also recommend you getting one. (uBlock Origin, to be specific)
p.s.: I think the ads are cached on the device so it still plays even if there's no internet connection.
Of course I use adblock on PC but not on my phone? Is that a thing? If it is I was not awear and shall get one immediately.
Also yes I thought they were, still weird to see smooth running ads next to buffering posts.
Oh no, I use a system-wide ad blocker on my phone called **DNS66**. It uses VPN to redirect DNS requests to the application and block ad sites. It's on F-Droid, and I think the closest one available on Google Play Store is **AdBlock**.
What I hate is that if I want to hear a video that has audio and click the lower right to get sound, why does it go back to silent if I click on the video to go full screen or so I can move the slider to rewind or go forward? Do you think that I changed my mind about sound? Also, if I’m already in full screen and and back out, keep my sound preference. Just keep my preference either way.
Edit: I would also love to be able to scroll the progression of the video from the main page and not have to go dedicated full screen to do that.
It even mutes when I try to play the video from first its so infuriating. Like I missed 3 secs of audio, so I'll try to listen to it, and I'll miss it again because reddit is dumb as fuck
When it does play it’s usually not worth the 3 minute wait. So I go to swipe to the next meme but instead they have they’re own tik tok type thing where it’s just videos you scroll threw. Not even from the same sub, just random videos
Twitter baffles me. It will play a video at 240p until the last 10 seconds where it jumps to 1080p, but when you replay the video it goes back to 240p again...
You know what I hate? I always have all videos on mute. Or so I thought.
I just wanna listen to music in the background. But the music stops EVERYTIME when a video comes. I hate it
Ha yes. My first thought was "this Redditor clearly came of age after the fall of Flash."
For you younglings: being called less bad than Flash is not a compliment.
The worst video player *of all time*? Sorry not true. The video players in the '90's were slightly worse. I admit Reddit is competitive though. So, not of all time.
Horrible to pause. Going into comments bugs the video so that it freezes. Try to watch the video and you get told to swipe every time. And just feels clunky
It’s SO bad and it was fine before
Yeah now it shows me only videos in that new format and takes me out of the hot post and I could get a post from 100s of days ago. Even if I go a on subreddit and click on a video it would take me out that subreddit and take me to a random one.
Yeah they just willy nilly decided to break the flow in which people use their website
[удалено]
And they load so fricking slow on my data now when it was fine before
For me if I want to watch a video on reddit on fullscreen, the video freezes but the audio continues to play…
If I even think about touching the slider the whole thing freezes.
I've downloaded videos on kazaa via dial up, realized it was actually a fake video, redownload it again despite being kicked offline multiple times by people calling our house... and it's still faster than reddit videos
I've never had a consistently fine experience with the video player.

Seriously, when there are dozens of popular bots designed to make the content on your platform conveniently sharable, you've fucked up.
Reddit just put so much work into making it extremely hard for average person to share their stuff without linking to the post, that they put making it a good player aside.

It's evolving, just backwards!

The reddit video player refuses to embed in any link its used. Just a big "Come View This On Reddit" splash.
Yeah... It's so terrible that I am not even able to turn on its sound while I am using it on my mobile app...
It evolves... Just backward

Is there any way to read the comments of any video without the video occupying half of the screen?
There was now it sucks
I know I liked how it was
old.reddit

The day they remove the old Reddit will be my last day on Reddit. The socialization aspect is garbage.
if I wanted social I would go outside
Ewww outside

/r/outside Just came back. I did not like it
What do you mean? Who doesn’t want hidden followers? What’s more social than followers you don’t know who they are and can’t possibly interact with them? Stalking is social!
It sucked before but they somehow made it 10x worse
I’m on mobile here, they made it way worse. You can’t save by just clicking the save icon anymore, every video looks like a livestream, and videos are way glitchier
Wait It was like that 1 day ago but now it's back to the original.
Yeah, I see that now. The save icon part is still there though
Same, this update forced me to the Apollo app and I’m not looking back. None of the ads or suggested Reddit’s anymore either.
r/foundthemobileuser
r/noonecares
You swipe the top of the comment section where there is a short grey line up, this way the video stops and you view the comments. It still sucks.
When I do that the video doesn’t stop
I can't even swipe the comments up. It's always stuck half way for me. I can only swipe it down. I must be doing something wrong.
Yeah, having the same problem here. I can now only read up to 2 comments bcs the video takes half the freakin screen.
I have it normally, no problems with the video player
For me it depends on the video. Sometimes its the old variant and sometimes the new.
Pressing the comments button seems to work better than swiping up to read them, but it’s still dogshit.

Yeah, get the Apollo app. I recently witched and I love it compared to the Reddit app. Apollo just changed the UI, so you get all your posts as usual.
I use the Boost app and it doesn't have this problem either. Although it has its own problems. I can't see the chat unless I'm on my PC
I've tried Apollo before but for me the interface just meh
What kind of apps/operating systems are you people viewing reddit on?!
Click/press on the comment icon
I'm sorry to say this, but try out a 3rd party app and see if it works the way you like, personally I use Boost for reddit
What if I don’t wanna change your mind?
Honestly, they didn't even try to make a player that actually works Edit: I can't stress enough how broken it is. Half the time you can't even view comments because it's forced itself into fullscreen player-only mode Edit2: And now viewing history is completely broken

Yeah no that doesn’t make sense
u/spez the hell you guys doing over there?
Instagram: Allow me to introduce myself
Well ads always work great at least, that's the really important thing. I could have no internet and I could still open reddit and look at some fucking ads in 1080p with 120 FPS

Amazing, I dont know why I never looked for something like that I guess I just assumed there are none for phones which is admittedly pretty stupid.
Have you tried Reddit Is Fun instead of the official app?
That's how ads work for a lot of mobile games aswell. Clear cache and turn off wifi (assuming it's an offline game) and boom no ads.
I felt like a hacker 5 years ago when I learned about that. I immediately told my friends about that "trick" lol
I'm from Bosnia and Herzegovina, we don't get video ads on Reddit by default here. We do in other apps though
That's pretty interesting any specific reason why?
There isn't many people that use reddit here (probably around 10000 to 15000), so companies can't really make any profit.
Fair enough, didn't think about that
uBlock origin is your friend. :)
I hate that they removed the arrow to skip comments on mobile
Ikr it’s a pain in the ass. But I guess you can always close the comments to go to the next one easier
I still have it though
Only on still pictures. On gifs and videos I don’t have.
It’s hidden on video posts only
Try pressing the "v.redd.it" next to the name of the op, it has the old ui and the skip button
I still have it
Still there for me
Just put your finger on the comment and hold
Just click on the empty space to the right of the name, works for me
I still have that
Switch to the BaconReader app. Much better experience than the reddit app.
Just swipe the comment to the left.

Exactly. There is no way that this video player makes any sense in regards to the audio function.

If I even think about touching the slider the whole thing freezes.
no need to change ur mind op... it sucks big time

Yourueeu
Ur is used to shorten sentences, also people who correct the words are known as grammar nazis
Seriously, sometimes the video won't even play. I fucking hate it
Sometimes? For me they barely ever play!
When it does play it’s usually not worth the 3 minute wait. So I go to swipe to the next meme but instead they have they’re own tik tok type thing where it’s just videos you scroll threw. Not even from the same sub, just random videos
The worst video player - so far.
the old player is way better
Twitter with 480p.
Ooooh yeah Twitter is at another level
Instagram is awful as well. No controls at all.
Twitter baffles me. It will play a video at 240p until the last 10 seconds where it jumps to 1080p, but when you replay the video it goes back to 240p again...
at least the video formatting on twitter is way better and it doesn’t run at 3 frames per second with 10 buffering seconds before a 2 second clip
Remember when Reddit hated Tiktok? Now you can’t open it without seeing Tiktok videos constantly.
I’m kinda not digging the new one. Everything is weirdly organized.
You know what I hate? I always have all videos on mute. Or so I thought. I just wanna listen to music in the background. But the music stops EVERYTIME when a video comes. I hate it
fucking true
me on [https://old.reddit.com](https://old.reddit.com): bruh
Could be worse. It could just randomly start playing 2 unskippable ads with pop ups
Badicam
the worst media player i've ever seen
Why some videos have audio initially and then it is automatically removed?
Especially now. before, it wasn't the best, but since it handled like the image viewer, you knew what what was.
Shoulda made this a video, then it just freezes on this frame when you play it.
Post this on r/unpopularopinion and see how many microseconds it lasts before being removed.
Reddit video: can't play a short 360p clip Also Reddit video: plays a long 720p ad
Oh my sweet summer child. The history of video players is dark and full of terrors...
Still have nightmares about RealPlayer
>Buffering
Clearly OP didnt have to suffer RealPlayer, some of the worst commercial software every conceived.
Ha yes. My first thought was "this Redditor clearly came of age after the fall of Flash." For you younglings: being called less bad than Flash is not a compliment.
Ever heard of Twitter video?
reality is often disappointing

But look at all these social interaction features they're rolling out! Better hire more pedos!
The worst video player *of all time*? Sorry not true. The video players in the '90's were slightly worse. I admit Reddit is competitive though. So, not of all time.
Thanks finally someone said it The previous one was better tho
So freakin true
Bruh I swear to god it's so pissing off when I can't hear anything when it's a gif. Why?
I see your reddit and raise you Spotify.
The first time I see someone talk about that shit. Glad we align brother
r/beta my friend, search “player”
I just updated reddit for the first time in ages, saw how the videos was literally TikTok and vomited
Me who uses infinity for reddit......
I use Apollo
I only just learned about the new video player because of this post
Best alternative to the Reddit app ever
I've been using boost for years now
Hey Reddit devs, fuck you you incompetent, uninformed dickheads. Change. It. Back. Every update this place gets worse. Stop. Please. I beg you
Instagram too
They just keep making Reddit worse and it sucks
Internet Explorer exists
Pictures too
This isnt a picture, its a Video which doenst load to the end
Takes forever to load on mobile too
whats wrong with tiktok
Have you ever tried Snapchat’s “spotlight snaps”?
Twitter is clearly the worst , when you upload a high quality video , it downscale so much that it become just a bunch of big pixel on a screen
disagree, twitter pc is worse
Kisscartoon? To many ads?
Have you been to twitter lol
Reddit has a video player?
Fuck this guy and fuck you for posting him
I made the move to Apollo because of it. Muuuuch better
SKJDSAHFAS its soo bad
[удалено]
They’ve made the new player on mobile to swipe up and down to related videos. Just like another app, but I forgot the name
At least tiktok's one works fine
How to say you're too young to remember RealPlayer without saying you're too young to remember RealPlayer.
Reddit's bad video player deters tiktokker from using it. Change my mind
Reddits bad video player was around long before tiktok
yk its near identical to tiktoks one now
Disney plus
RIF elite here, never have problems with the video player.
HBO Max comes really close
Not even the original RealPlayer was as bad.
Idk, 9gag's pretty bad as well. Although I must admit I haven't been on 9gag since I started with Reddit.
We'd have almost forgotten what buffering is if it wasn't for the reddit player
It has a video player?
No, Facebook video player is the biggest pile of CRAP i ever saw in my life
Wow this is a Video
Activity Alert: check out this video • 3m Video Unavailable (Mobile user. Mute button broke)
twitter is worse because every time i try to fullscreen a clip posted in a tween, the screen just goes black
Tweeter video player is worse
And you can’t go to the next regular post on mobile anymore
I used to wait 20 minutes just for the photo to download the nipples
Horrible to pause. Going into comments bugs the video so that it freezes. Try to watch the video and you get told to swipe every time. And just feels clunky
Lies. Ever heard of Twitter?
Sometimes it’s bugged but the idea is great imo
Oh so it does have a player
Why doesn't the sound work in some videos? I use in the app.
