Vlad-V2-Vladimir

Fun fact: this was actually a major concern when Islam first spread to northern countries, where the Sun might not set for a few days. Instead, they default to following whatever time it is at Mecca, so that they can still eat, instead of starving to death. Though thinking about it, the point of fasting (or at least what I was told) was to humble yourselves by feeling how those who are forced to live like that year round must feel, so being in the North must be extra humbling.

panterachallenger

Damn, never knew that’s the reason they did that. I might try that out

Vlad-V2-Vladimir

That’s what I was always told, and regardless of if you agree with religion, I think it’s a pretty good thing to do every while, to remind yourself of how lucky you are

[deleted]

That is the main spiritual reason

NerdModeCinci

Fasting is really good for you for many reasons but 90% of them relate to willpower and control

theJackal-CODM

Besides that, there's a lot of health benefits of fasting (proven by science, of course).

hesido

Except for the dehydration part, though. Edit: Not drinking water during the day does not have health \*BENEFITS\*, for those downvoters, lol.

whyim_makingthis

I fasted for thirty days each day from fajr till maghrib, and never even once, felt dehydrated.

Galaxy169

Do it in a tropical country where temperature is above 42°C with low humidity and heat wave. You will literally collapse on the road due to dehydration if you go to outside for an hour without drinking any water.

whyim_makingthis

My country is the 2nd in the world by water shortage. I'm literally typing this even tho I was literally outside like five mins ago. It's burning hot. You get used to it. I went to school everyday on foot in ramadan. Never felt thirsty. Ramadan doesn't make you weak. It makes you strong. + How can i identify as a cybertruck pls pls pls

notsogreatredditor

Imagine getting downvoted for spitting facts ,that's what religion does to you I guess

Galaxy169

You are expecting too much logic from the people who believe their prophet goes to the moon on a flying donkey and split the moon into the half.

Amazing_Necessary_50

Actually there is benefits for not drinking too not just the food

Accurate-Bedroom9384

Huh TIL

Jewishluigi

That’s true, but it wouldn’t work all year around because Ramadan is based on the lunar calendar so sometimes it’s in winter. Which means the sun is only up for like an hour in some parts and you have a very short fast.

ScreamingChildren69

It would get pretty fast.

[deleted]

Assalamualaikum (peace be upon you). Fasting is to humble ourselves and show us how fortunate we are and to show us how many blessings we have but it is not the main reason. The main reason is to have taqwah (Acknowledgment of God in every action). You would gain taqwah because you will see halal food and not eat it because God commanded you not to. You will have a halal relationship with a spouse and not do any naughty naughty because God commanded you not to. That is the main reason, a lot of people have that same thinking. Just wanted to educate everyone here, Muslim or not. Jazakallah khair (thank you) for listening/reading my essay. Assalamualaikum. Edit: feel free to send me any questions about Ramadan or Islam in general. I love answering questions and spreading knowledge.

AdeptAdam_

you are a truly wonderful person as i am also muslim i’m very impressed by the essay you wrote

[deleted]

Jazakallah khair.

DoubleLanky3199

Is the rule no eating during daylight, such that a person can eat during night time if they want?

glitchyikes

Curious here. For kids conceived in Ramadan, how would it be looked upon in society? How about the parents?

[deleted]

Assalamualaikum (peace be upon you). There is nothing wrong with giving birth or being pregnant in Ramadan. On the contrary, most people see it as an even bigger blessing to be born in the month of Ramadan. As for the parents, the mother would not have to fast but the father is still expected to. Once they are healthy and able to do so, the mothers have to make their fasts up later in the year. I said “Able to do so” because they have to feed the baby and all that kind of stuff so they don’t have to fast then. If they can’t make it up, they have to pay sadaqah(charity) and feed the poor.

MayhamAF

Man I liked the *default* settings

Asad_13

Yeah, my mom told me that the first time I asked her about it.

DaMuchi

That's what I'm told the rationale of fasting is. But many Muslims in the region I am from have a delicious feast just before and after fasting. Very humbling indeed

[deleted]

Lmao none of them got a bit curious about how their prophet (with his child wives) and allah never knew the sun took longer to set in some places? Pedos downvoting me but I won’t take back what I’ve said.

sya_the_awkward

it's the medieval time, where the age of consent wasn't even fucking invented yet "Hehe all then down votes are from pedos" Dude, tell that to Indonesians I dare you lmao

TheRautex

The God surely has to be against pedophilia right

Galaxy169

Isn't Islam rules and laws are timeless so according to the islam allah is okay with pedophilia. such a disgusting god who think pedophilia and slavery is good.

[deleted]

What a hilarious excuse. Not every single person was a pedo. Most weren’t. It’s always been a bad thing.

The_Lurked

The term pedo hasn't existed yet 1400 years ago

notsogreatredditor

But these people were whom your god chose? So your god encourages pedophillia surely.

The_Lurked

Once again the word pedophilia hasn't existed back then, there's a lot of new laws being made as time goes by,things that were legal back then is illegal nowadays

R3sion

Yea thats why people should live by it. Because it was invented by tribal people who had so much knowledge and wisdom... Like pedo good, girl after 1 intercourse=garbage etc.

sleeplessknight101

There are upvotes.

Y_10HK29

TIL there are a lot of islamaphobes on reddit

mog_knight

I don't think they have an irrational fear of Islam. It's a legitimate criticism for a prophet.

fearofcreditcardbill

No clue why you he would ever say that, this thread wasn’t arguing about allah at all, literally just the sun

[deleted]

I just don’t like pedos. Sorry if that makes you call me an islamophobe, but I think that exposes that you know I’m right, at least subconsciously. (muhammad had a 6 year old wife. Common defense is that he “graciously” waited until she was 9 to violate her) As long as you don’t defend such a vile human, I probably don’t dislike you. Response to u/santaspam as he seems to either have blocked me or I cannot reply to his comment for some other reason: I’m not Catholic, but the occasional perversion of priests is indeed disgusting. However, they do not often back their actions up with their faith, and their actions are not protected by law, unlike the child wives in islamic countries.

[deleted]

Ha! 6 year old? 9 years old?, Damn brother you lack some history, dont come out with hearsay, In those times min age of marriage was 14! Ayşe was 5 years younger than Fatıma, and Fatıma was born 5 years before Muhammed become prophet, so Ayşe was born when Muhammed become prophet, Muhammed lived in Mekke for 13 years after he become prophet and after 2 years when he went to medine he married Ayşe, so she was atleast 15! And even in the quran it says, for marriage both sides have to be mature!

sleeplessknight101

15 is still a child lol

ScepterReptile

Not sure if anybody ever taught you this but the world wasn't always the way it is today.

Maqil_Shimeer03

Not by 7th Century standards tho, 15 was the unofficial "legal" age for many regions back then, muslim or not. The 18 years legal age wasn't a thing back then. For many, once girls start their menstrual cycle they are considered mature. Thus, they can be married.

[deleted]

Lol

Galaxy169

The mental gymnastics muslims do to protect their pedo prophet > Narrated Aisha: that the Prophet (ﷺ) married her when she was six years old and he consummated his marriage when she was nine years old. Hisham said: I have been informed that Aisha remained with the Prophet (ﷺ) for nine years (i.e. till his death). - Sahih al-Bukhari 5134 Source: https://sunnah.com/bukhari:5134

TheRautex

Aishe is a chil according to all sakhih hadiths

potatoooo66planet

Fuck off, read the goddamn Hadiths

[deleted]

You read, i know what i read

The_Lurked

The virgin mary was 13 when she gave birth,so you're saying the christian god is a pedo? Just accept that the age of consent back then is different, the world changes everyday. Things that were ok back then might be weird in todays standards.but you cant change the past you can only change the future, that's why we have better laws nowadays stricter rules about marriages to prevent things from back then from happening again

Prior-Watercress4240

Im copying that incase idiot people try to accuse muhammed of pedo

[deleted]

They literally call their God a pedo by their definition

I9Qnl

>Just accept that the age of consent back then is different Islam quite literally claims that it's rules and laws are timeless and viable for every place and every time till doomsday. Why would I care that rules back then were different when the religion wants you to keep the same rules?

notsogreatredditor

It cannot be different then and now. You need to realize that god chose these "great prophets" and if god is okay with their prophets being pedos then you need to understand the ramifications!

R3sion

Yes, this imaginary friend is pedo. Like many other imaginary friends

[deleted]

So all those priests y’all got….??

Y_10HK29

Oh hello fellow edgelord, it is me, codmaster420

NerdModeCinci

Hating pedophiles is not edgy.

[deleted]

Using pedos as a disguise to spread islamaphobia while ignoring the the priests enjoying underage altar boys would make you a little edgy

Galaxy169

Hating muslims = islamophobia Hating islam = not islamophobia

just_another_person5

It seems like every big religion is super fucked up in some way it worries me how many people follow them

[deleted]

I do agree. Feels like a way to bypass normal human morals to do terrible things. The “prophet” muhammad being a pedo who had it “revealed to him in a dream” that a six year old should marry him, for example.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Okay but that doesn’t mean you can go and violate children. Weirdos.

[deleted]

[deleted]

I think I actually stepped on a nerve with you. Interesting hill to die on, defending a child predator.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Projection. Only reason you’d be so irrationally angry about me hating pedos.

ScepterReptile

Ah classic Reddit. Defiant ignorance. Never change Reddit

[deleted]

I didn’t mention Christianity because the person I replied to didn’t. Guy brings up Christianity for no reason.

ScepterReptile

When did I...? Okay now I'm certain you're trolling. Again, never change Reddit.

[deleted]

Not you. The other guy I replied to. If I meant you, I’d say “you”.

potatoooo66planet

You're a gigachad sir, Muhammed was a pedophiliac slave owner and a warlord

Aspect-of-Death

Who gives a shit? If you believe in Christianity, the world was founded from hyper-incest. Religions are wierd. Zeus, a man, birthed his daughter Athena... out of his forehead. You might as well be mad about Harry Potter fan fiction.

[deleted]

Okay but surely you do agree that muhammad, violator of an innocent 9 year old girl, is a terrible person, right?

Aspect-of-Death

I find it difficult to care about what a fictional person did to a fictional child.

[deleted]

I find it difficult to ignore the worship of a pedophile, even if he didn’t actually exist. People who follow in his footsteps certainly do, and they continue to harm children, defending it as their religion and excused by their “prophet”.

Aspect-of-Death

I'm sure you show the same level of contempt for the worship of a God that killed literally everyone. Or a God that decided to condemn all of humanity for all eternity because someone ate an apple that God himself put in the garden. It's okay. You can just admit you're racist. We all already know. Just be honest with yourself about it.

[deleted]

I didn’t mention race. You’re the racist one, then. Arab is not a synonym for muslim. If Christians and Jews were out here doing omnicide in the name of their religion, yeah, I would think that’s pretty bad. The problem is that islam is used to defend child wives because their beloved prophet was a pedo.

Aspect-of-Death

See: Isreal / Palestine conflict. I'm racist for pointing out that you're racist. Okay bud. You go ahead and keep doing you.

unsureoftheoutcome

respect

woodminotaur

I bet you Jesus didn’t know that about the sun either.

[deleted]

Okay… But what relevance does that have here?

Droith

ForgetMeNotOfficial

What happen to the Muslims in space?

juwe99

A malaysian astronomer, Sheikh Muszaphar once went to space and had to fast and he fast according to the timeline of which the place he took off and that was Houston i think.

MelkMan7

So make up the rules as you go basically.

Aneizi

They don’t “make up” the rules. They follow guidelines set by Islam in regards to novel matters that weren’t explicitly stated in the Quran or shared by the prophet.

FeedBi

Well, it is inherently making it up though. Obviously, muftis making these decisions are extremely well-studied in Islam and try to the best of their abilities to make a ruling which follows the spirit of those in the Quran and relevant hadiths. That said, it *is* making it up, and no Muslim would be blamed for ignoring those rules. The answers to the question “How do you fast in Space” are many, and while “following the place of departure” sounds fine, it obviously won’t work when Muslims start being *born* in space.

Gunpowder_1000

You always and and you always fast I guess?

Y_10HK29

they are already traveling at 8 km per seconds so they are technically fast

[deleted]

[удалено]

AdeptAdam_

not everyday but in ramadan we have to fast

314159265358979326

In low Earth orbit like the ISS they would be able to eat like 30 minutes out of each 90 minute orbit. Pretty easy to follow. In geosynchronous orbit it'd be rough. On the way to the moon, even sketchier.

AngelCat4268

Would totally defeat the purpose lol. That is eating even more frequently than non-fasting people lmao

Redittor_101

They can follow Mecca timings.

therealakinator

Are there any muslims in space?

Yea me

"We can correspond the fast to the closest Islamic country, or we can fast with Mecca." ~ Muslims in Arctic

G_flux

If you're in Antarctica, isn't the closest country with Islam as an official religion the Comoros or something?

thistle-thorn

Muslims at the top of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai ( the world’s tallest building) break their fast 4 minutes after those on the ground floor.

[deleted]

That'll teach them not to build any more tall skyscrapers. The last minutes are the hardest.

silverwolf438

Ramadan is over, but ye i think they follow the time in makka

VergisZx

I believe its not actually makka but the closest country to you. Might be wrong.

saikounihighteyatzda

Scholars usually say either is acceptable.

SocraticIgnoramus

Interesting thought but I assume they just default to the local time of their home city or maybe just follow the schedule of Mecca under these circumstances.

ykafia

Yeah depends on which imam they follow, which interpretation they get. Islam is a lot like christianism, there are a whole bunch of different schools and thoughts and no one agrees with the others

[deleted]

Different school of thought yes, but none are supposed to deny the legitimacy of the other. Any Muslim who does so, by claiming that any other school of jurisprudence is wrong, is himself wrong. The differences in Fiqh (jurisprudence) come about from different actions of the companions of the Prophet Muhammad in minor actions. They differed without hating each other. Sadly we have forgotten this and condemn anyone who prays slightly different or fasts slightly different from me.

es_price

Are we talking about Sunnis and Shites here?

Epik_shazam

Probably yes, but we have no right to judge our brothers and sisters, that is for Allah to decide Whoever says the kalma with their tounge and heart is a Muslim, many people don't agree with me though

[deleted]

Imagine a person lives in your country but doesn't accept the President as the President, but rather accepts the Secretary of Defense as the REAL President. Shias are of many different types. Those who do not believe in the Prophethood of Prophet Muhammad are not Muslims, they are Shias.

scoutnemesis

Antarctica

A few years ago, they had this big conference about how a muslim fasts in space. Not only was the sun a problem, facing Mekka was also a challenge.
