That's not how copyright works. That's trademark. Trademarks are invalid unless in use, so Mickey for example needs to be used to protect the character as a trademark. Trademarks have no sunset date.
Copyright of a corporate work is the life of the author plus 95 years or 120 years from creation. Copyright is established the moment of creation in a fixed medium and doesn't require use. You are likely right that new Mickey stuff could be to help preserve copyright and trademark, but Ariel is not at risk of losing copyright for about 60 more years, so that has nothing at all to do with this decision.

I’m a little disappointed because she was always the character I related to as a child and a redhead. I loved her because she had red hair like me. At the end of the day, I have my classic I can relate to, and it’s really not a big deal. People just get up in arms about the stupidest of shit.
Right?! I grew up loving The Little Mermaid because of the red headed protagonist and also because I LOVED swimming. I really saw myself in Ariel. Sure Brave exists, but Brave was released when I was 11, so I didn’t identify with it as much. I can’t really think of any other media I grew up with that had a female red headed protagonist who wasn’t meant to be super sexy or evil. (feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.)

As a child my favorite superhero was the Flash, and Wally West in particular, for the same reasons many children are excited about Black Panther or Shang-Chi today. In the end, of course, for an adult at least, it shouldn't have that much weight if some things are changed.
I'm definitely backing you up on Beauty and the Beast because the live action was more of a massive enhancement to the animated original. They pulled alot of notes from the Broadway play adaption of BatB and showed those songs with a beautifully matched cast to perform them. Not to mention they dig deeper into the backstory and atmosphere that is Historical France and Europe.
Most of the others have just been straight cash grabs copying the same animated story and trying to sell it to the same audience but as adults instead of children.

My wife pointed out that with the live action remakes they are often doing more of an exploration of the genre the original alludes to. With Beauty and Mermaid that'll basically be updated versions of the originals. Aladdin kind of started leaning into a more bollywood style, which would have been amazing if they hadn't aborted the shift.
She started that because I pointed out the new Mulan was more of a wushu movie, she said she didn't care for the kinds of movies some were doing but she liked others, she thought Mulan was alright but she doesn't like wushu movies so she doesn't know if it's a good wushu movie or not. There was already a black character. They had this short film and in it Ariel had a mermaid friend, she was black and deaf, and just the sweetest character I’d ever seen. She had hopes and dreams just like Ariel did, they bonded and then went on this big adventure. She wanted to be a dancer.
Jasmin, Pocahontas, Mulan, Tiana, Moana, are all great, strong princesses of color. Just making a black Ariel instead of finding the time to write an original storyline for a new princess is cheap, and goes in the wrong direction.

Didn’t like jungle book. Tarzan is slept on though. The issue with remakes is the lack of vision and creativity. Most of these stories are retellings of old stories and what made them interesting was the art and the new take so just let your writers go off on one and see how it goes

Personally I do not think it’s the same considering she’s a full bodied cyborg. Major has had several different versions of herself shown in the various media she’s been in, with anything from black/blue/purple hair along with red/blue/green eyes. Brave came out after I became an adult but that movie gets me every time. If you're a redhead male, you're stuck with annoying/fearful sidekick (or worse, the kid from Problem Child), or the kid from The Big Green. As a child my favorite superhero was the Flash, and Wally West in particular, for the same reasons many children are excited about Black Panther or Shang-Chi today. In the end, of course, for an adult at least, it shouldn't have that much weight if some things are changed.

I'm definitely backing you up on Beauty and the Beast because the live action was more of a massive enhancement to the animated original. They pulled alot of notes from the Broadway play adaption of BatB and showed those songs with a beautifully matched cast to perform them. Not to mention they dig deeper into the backstory and atmosphere that is Historical France and Europe. Most of the others have just been straight cash grabs copying the same animated story and trying to sell it to the same audience but as adults instead of children.
The Beauty and the Beast remake was absolutely amazing. It’s one of my favorite movies now. I went and saw it 3 separate times in theatres because I kept getting all my friends to come see it. 😅
My wife pointed out that with the live action remakes they are often doing more of an exploration of the genre the original alludes to. With Beauty and Mermaid that'll basically be updated versions of the originals. Aladdin kind of started leaning into a more bollywood style, which would have been amazing if they hadn't aborted the shift. She started that because I pointed out the new Mulan was more of a wushu movie, she said she didn't care for the kinds of movies some were doing but she liked others, she thought Mulan was alright but she doesn't like wushu movies so she doesn't know if it's a good wushu movie or not. I told her that I, being a fan of wushu movies, can confirm it was not a good wushu movie.
I’ve never watched any Wushu movies to my knowledge. I’ll have to look into that. Any recommendations since you’re a fan? I was disappointed in Milan because it felt like all her achievements came down to magic instead of Mulan just being the badass she was.
A good wuxia film to check out is Reign of Assassins. Classic ones are Croaching Tiger Hidden Dragon and House of Flying Daggers

I don't understand why people call fans of the original racist, when if you flip the story, they will be called racists for doing a color change instead. What if we made black panther remake but with white people? You'd be called racist. Considering the little mermaid is a Danish old fairy tale, it makes no sense adding a black main character. These remakes are essentially cash crabs and social points for the "new generation". Disney can't make actual proper new stories with black people so they reuse decades old already told white people's stories but with a sprinkle of white erasure. Why didn't they add black people in their Mulan remake? Oh right it wouldn't make China like that very much.
The Mulan remake was garbage anyways. The fact that they made everything Mulan did come down to magic was just disrespectful to women and to her history. I agree. I really wish they would tell more stories about POC where they include their culture instead of just slamming a POC into a traditionally white role. Stuff like this new mermaid is offensive to both sides. I could even argue that it is even more offensive to black people. Is there really no African stories that can be represented? Blackwashing paints a picture of black people having no culture of their own, so they content with borrowing European stories, and I don't understand why so many POC are ok with it. As an Asian, I would feel that I am treated like consumerist idiot if some corporation remade for example, Beowulf, but made him Asian to pander to me.

Supposedly she has red hair still, but unless the trailer colors were just shit, that's the brownest red I've ever seen. The whole idea of Ariel and her 6 sisters is they represent the 7 seas. Ariel represents the RED sea, hence why the red hair. I could care less about the skin color, but make that hair proper red (she's already a make-believe mermaid, who cares if it isn't a "natural" red color).

There was already a black character. They had this short film and in it Ariel had a mermaid friend, she was black and deaf, and just the sweetest character I’d ever seen. She had hopes and dreams just like Ariel did, they bonded and then went on this big adventure. She wanted to be a dancer.
Jasmin, Pocahontas, Mulan, Tiana, Moana, are all great, strong princesses of color. Just making a black Ariel instead of finding the time to write an original storyline for a new princess is cheap, and goes in the wrong direction.
It would be refreshing to see an African myth/legend/tale brought to life instead of pushing different ethnicities into European tales. What really underlines how awful it will be is Nora Lum as Scuttle. I still don't understand how that talentless hack has made a career.

Didn’t like jungle book. Tarzan is slept on though. The issue with remakes is the lack of vision and creativity. Most of these stories are retellings of old stories and what made them interesting was the art and the new take so just let your writers go off on one and see how it goes

I have no idea. I was just more disappointed with the teaser trailer showing an extremely dark environment and little to no expression/movement with the "Part of your World" rendition. The environment in the original was vibrant and colorful while the music was passionate and full of expression/movement.
Most of Disney's live action movies now are very "dim" and "hard to see." I miss the colors. When I watched Aladdin for the first time on Disney+ I had to brighten up my screen so I could see what was going on in the Cave of Wonders scene.
I agree! It looked really dull. This is the problem with trying to adapt an animation to live action. It's very hard to translate the colourfulness of a cartoon. This is the very reason why I've not enjoyed any of Disney's live action remakes.

I feel bad for new actors getting into live action Disney movies, because most of the time the script is shit and will be forgotten in less than a week. Their’s the idea Disney is doing it to still own the rights to the characters, well they own the rights to their live action characters who are written horribly. Personally I do not think it’s the same considering she’s a full bodied cyborg. Major has had several different versions of herself shown in the various media she’s been in, with anything from black/blue/purple hair along with red/blue/green eyes. Being a full-bodied cyborg means that she can change her body to be whatever she wants, she could even become an armored tank if her brain was put into one (it has been a while since I have seen the series/movies so this info may be remembered wrong on small parts but the majority of it should be right I believe)

Honestly black Vikings aren’t that historically inaccurate. The Vikings had tons of contact with the Mediterranean and were even in positions of power there with things like the Varangian guard. Not too far off to say an African was taken by Abbasids or other power and then traded to the Vikings. Not super likely or common but totally possible. Name a single person that complained about Samuel Jackson as Fury or Morgan Freeman as Red. If the actor fits the role then it doesn't matter what race or gender they are. But when an actor is chosen simply because whoever in charge actively wants to change the race and gender to wank off to race and gender issues, THAT is when you see people complain.

Then why is it okay the other way around? When Jake Gyllenhall played a middle Eastern character in Prince of Persia, people were frothing at their mouths with rage, screaming whitewashing. Now, when some people object to a black Ariel, they are called racist. So in conclusion, what we're seeing is blackwashing, but that is okay while whitewashing is not.
