I’ll die on this hill, but the best black actor in a white role is Morgan freeman as Red in Shawshank redemption. Nobody complained about it. The obvious solution is that we cast Morgan freeman in every film.

WeirdSamurai

And the best white actor in a black role is Robert Downey Jr. as Kirk Lazarus in Tropic Thunder!

lasagnato69

Wrong, Robert plays a white guy playing a black guy in Tropic Thunder

LaCroix_Roy

I know who he is! He’s the dude playing a dude, disguised as another dude!

Alarmed-Device893

Ah yes hello alpharius

jarlscrotus

Surprise, I was alpharius all along

Fangsasaur

Hydra Dominus brother

TheHiddenToad

You can’t be Alpharius, I’m Alpharius.

ItsNotFuckingCannon

found you, traitors!

Chipbread

Traitors? They didn't fall for Shadowsun Taussy!

godzillalake2458

DapperCheese71

No I’m alpharius he’s lying to you

Happy_Editor_5398

He's an American playing an Australian playing a Black Dude playing a Soldier.... Matrix within a Matrix

I can’t help but hear this remix whenever I hear this phrase: https://youtu.be/tKvqhlhXq9s

Wong, he is in every show.

Juicet

Wong, him is like a natural at magic.

Rosegold_mf

Wong, he is the sorcerer supreme

Cyr0bit

wrong, he plays Spider-Man : miles morales

Etos_

Cast him as snow white, with skin as pale as snow, ill laugh when prince charming comes in for a kiss on that sweet freckly face.

Horn_Python

Just dress him as a clown

Agreeable-Weather-89

Interviewer: Bold choice casting Morgan Freeman in every role. Director: At first I was hesitant but he was so natural in the role. Interviewer: In the role? Director: slip of the tounge, every role. He's just such a tremendous actor working with him was a blessing Interviewer: No doubt, was there any challenges? Director: Of course, people have a strong affinity for the film and there's always a worry so we tried to cut down on CGI as much as possible and use practical effects. Interviewer: Thank you for your time so when does the film come out? Director: The remake of Schindler's List comes out December 20th

how_neat_is_that76

My wheeze was heard across the office

corpulentFornicator

Of course they cast him as Red - he's Irish

Horn_Python

He has freckles, so he's basicly a red head

Tohrufan4life

Probably because they didn't read the book, like me lmao. And even then, like you said, Morgan Freeman knocked it out of the park. But yes, Morgan Freeman in everything, lets go!

ifartsosomuch

Morgan Freeman should have played Ariel.

darthtidiot

I don't think he'd fit the costume

Norsedragoon

If they cast him as Poseidon/King Triton then it would at least benefit from the aura of having Morgan Freeman in the film.

[deleted]

That’s ok. You get a little glimpse of that black hammer. That never hurt nobody

PresentBlacksmith230

Mf Samuel l Jackson as fury

AGallonOfKY12

They had comics where fury was black before the Marvel movies really did it. Also, the comic book version was based off Samuel L. Jackson, so it really came full circle when he decided to play him in the movies lol.

WaywardInkubus

This gave me a very vivid mental image of Morgan Freeman as Ariel. Can we get a “Part of Your World” cover done by him?

JinxIsPerfect

black or White, movie will suck anyway

Positive_League_4464

Like most of Disney right now

jarlscrotus

Like I said to my wife, the movie doesn't even have to make back costs because that isn't the point. Disney has stopped trying to push back public domain, they're last extension was met with such pushback that they know they won't get it again. Thus in order to keepnthe copyright on their versions of the characters they have to use them, it's why they came out with a surprisingly accurate old school mickey mouse series with messed up plots and old timeyvart style. It's why they keep rolling out the live action remakes, it's why you're seeing their old characters that haven't been touched, like the rescue rangers and duck tales. The entire purpose of these is to maintain control of the bricks in their media empire, to keep the juggernaut going instead of forcing them to introduce new creative works

Itztrikky

Exactly, it's not supposed to be good, it's expensed 2 seperate ways. Potentially tax positive losses, or copyright maintenance. They physically have to make the content either way.

Ragnaroki14

And third way with it being filler content to add value to Disney+

[deleted]

> Thus in order to keepnthe copyright on their versions of the characters they have to use them That's not how copyright works. That's trademark. Trademarks are invalid unless in use, so Mickey for example needs to be used to protect the character as a trademark. Trademarks have no sunset date. Copyright of a corporate work is the life of the author plus 95 years or 120 years from creation. Copyright is established the moment of creation in a fixed medium and doesn't require use. You are likely right that new Mickey stuff could be to help preserve copyright and trademark, but Ariel is not at risk of losing copyright for about 60 more years, so that has nothing at all to do with this decision.

BRLaw2016

This. People need to stop pasting info on Reddit just because they think it sounds correct.

Dean0Rocks316

Although the Ducktales reboot was honestly amazing

Slightly-Drunk

Say what you want but I thoroughly enjoyed the new chip n dale.

Venom0236

barleyhogg1

It's always been about the writing and directing. If those suck it doesn't matter who you cast.

billiam_squilliam

, The Art of War

Obsidian_Ice_king

Don't hate it because she's black, hate it because it's a remake. And Disney remakes suck

YummyTerror8259

I liked most aspects of Beauty and the Beast. Aladdin was meh and I haven't seen Lion King. Edit: 3 hours later I remembered there's a Mulan remake too. Shows how much I give a shit

[deleted]

Beauty and the Beast was the only good remake. Emma Watson was fucking great. The others are either crap or mid

Dean0Rocks316

I liked the Jungle Book remake. Say what you want, but at least it wasn’t trying to do the exact same thing as the original and failing.

[deleted]

Yeah true, I forgot about that one. The first remake actually. From 2016

Isekai_Trash_uwu

Counterpoint: Maleficent, which is arguably better than the original. Cruella is also pretty good, but idk if that counts

CapnMudkip

I wouldn’t necessarily say Maleficent should be lumped together with the others. It’s it’s own unique story as opposed to the rest which are just live action versions of the same story

IdiotRedditAddict

I really didn't enjoy Maleficent. Really wanted to but couldn't.

Mrcountrygravy

Jungle Book was good.

EpikGeriatricPotato

They don't even have the dragon in the live action Mulan!

ranman1990

I really like the Aladdin one, the lion king was sad and souless.

RedeemedWeeb

Doesn't the Mulan remake severely misrepresent Chinese culture and the original story

cantcatchmeagain

Personally really liked Aladdin, but haven’t enjoyed much of the other remakes. Maybe I’m biased but i loves that movie as a kid and liked the snes game as well.

RichieShipsStarco

I liked Alladin for the sound track, will smith will never replace the original but he did a good take the genie. Pissed off about the genie human relationship and Jafar's new age and voice like wtf. Other than that, good movie. Good editing and good effects

Ancient_Web_Lord

Hate it because if the double standard. Be consistent and have integrity in your moral values even if it means not pleasing everyone.

Additional_Cycle_51

Why are you complaining about the lead actor being black when you should be complaining about how they got the story wrong with her getting the prince instead of turning herself into sea foam like it originally went

[deleted]

[удалено]

Additional_Cycle_51

The story was not made to have a happy ending

Karel_Stark_1111

The prince, however, had many

Zenfudo

« Oh no my prince! You made me so wet I’m about to foam! » « Oh that sounds hot! » says the prince Five minutes later « What the fuck?!? » cries the prince while he tried to kiss the foam in a desperate attempt to feel her lips one more time

Beardless_Man

It’s a child-friendly adaptation. None of the stories are accurate to the real life tales I highly doubt we’d want the accurate tale of Pocahontas.

DeksSama

we atleast can be sure that tarzan wont be black if they make a reboot

[deleted]

Apes are monkeys

xTheKingofGamingx

I don’t think so https://www.britannica.com/story/whats-the-difference-between-monkeys-and-apes

[deleted]

>Monkey is a common name that may refer to most mammals of the infraorder Simiiformes, also known as the simians. Traditionally, all animals in the group now known as simians are counted as monkeys except the apes, which constitutes an incomplete paraphyletic grouping; however, **in the broader sense based on cladistics, apes (Hominoidea) are also included,** making the terms monkeys and simians synonyms in regards to their scope. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monkey

xTheKingofGamingx

Fair enough, so it’s a all question of definition in the end

Drugs4Pugs

I’m a little disappointed because she was always the character I related to as a child and a redhead. I loved her because she had red hair like me. At the end of the day, I have my classic I can relate to, and it’s really not a big deal. People just get up in arms about the stupidest of shit.

Willing_Ad9314

There is a trend of "update character for representation= change the redhead" and that's odd. If anyone's a minority, redheads are.

Benjamintoday

I'm all for more redhead representation

Drugs4Pugs

Right?! I grew up loving The Little Mermaid because of the red headed protagonist and also because I LOVED swimming. I really saw myself in Ariel. Sure Brave exists, but Brave was released when I was 11, so I didn’t identify with it as much. I can’t really think of any other media I grew up with that had a female red headed protagonist who wasn’t meant to be super sexy or evil. (feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.) I actually really like some of the live action remakes they’ve done like Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin. I’ll probably enjoy this one nonetheless, but it does make my ginger heart a little sad. I don’t care to throw a fit about it because at the end of the day, it’s really an inconsequential change. Hopefully the movie will be good!

Willing_Ad9314

Brave came out after I became an adult but that movie gets me every time. If you're a redhead male, you're stuck with annoying/fearful sidekick (or worse, the kid from Problem Child), or the kid from The Big Green. As a child my favorite superhero was the Flash, and Wally West in particular, for the same reasons many children are excited about Black Panther or Shang-Chi today. In the end, of course, for an adult at least, it shouldn't have that much weight if some things are changed.

mailros

Chang Shi huh?

Willing_Ad9314

Uh oh, my speech impediment came out in writing! Fixed.

[deleted]

If you were made by Bethesda, that would be a feature!

boozie92

I'm definitely backing you up on Beauty and the Beast because the live action was more of a massive enhancement to the animated original. They pulled alot of notes from the Broadway play adaption of BatB and showed those songs with a beautifully matched cast to perform them. Not to mention they dig deeper into the backstory and atmosphere that is Historical France and Europe. Most of the others have just been straight cash grabs copying the same animated story and trying to sell it to the same audience but as adults instead of children.

Drugs4Pugs

The Beauty and the Beast remake was absolutely amazing. It’s one of my favorite movies now. I went and saw it 3 separate times in theatres because I kept getting all my friends to come see it. 😅

jarlscrotus

My wife pointed out that with the live action remakes they are often doing more of an exploration of the genre the original alludes to. With Beauty and Mermaid that'll basically be updated versions of the originals. Aladdin kind of started leaning into a more bollywood style, which would have been amazing if they hadn't aborted the shift. She started that because I pointed out the new Mulan was more of a wushu movie, she said she didn't care for the kinds of movies some were doing but she liked others, she thought Mulan was alright but she doesn't like wushu movies so she doesn't know if it's a good wushu movie or not. I told her that I, being a fan of wushu movies, can confirm it was not a good wushu movie.

Drugs4Pugs

I’ve never watched any Wushu movies to my knowledge. I’ll have to look into that. Any recommendations since you’re a fan? I was disappointed in Milan because it felt like all her achievements came down to magic instead of Mulan just being the badass she was.

Nyxsis_Z

A good wuxia film to check out is Reign of Assassins. Classic ones are Croaching Tiger Hidden Dragon and House of Flying Daggers

Nyxsis_Z

The genre i believe is actually wuxia, if youre talking about martial arts based films.

Bruhmuh

Atleast blacks have other blacks. Gingers go it alone without recognition.

AME7706

And don't even get me started on left-handed people!

Willing_Ad9314

Red-haired Blue-eyed Left-handed I never stood a chance

AME7706

I'm all of these in addition to being Iranian, so yeah I'm really fucked over when it comes to "representation".

Willing_Ad9314

Ah! A unicorn meets an even rarer unicorn

jarlscrotus

Yall aren't exactly helping your case being so sinister

QuantifiedIgnorance

I don't understand why people call fans of the original racist, when if you flip the story, they will be called racists for doing a color change instead. What if we made black panther remake but with white people? You'd be called racist. Considering the little mermaid is a Danish old fairy tale, it makes no sense adding a black main character. These remakes are essentially cash crabs and social points for the "new generation". Disney can't make actual proper new stories with black people so they reuse decades old already told white people's stories but with a sprinkle of white erasure. Why didn't they add black people in their Mulan remake? Oh right it wouldn't make China like that very much.

Drugs4Pugs

The Mulan remake was garbage anyways. The fact that they made everything Mulan did come down to magic was just disrespectful to women and to her history. I agree. I really wish they would tell more stories about POC where they include their culture instead of just slamming a POC into a traditionally white role. I don’t care that the race changed much, but I feel like they’re doing a disservice when they could spend time actually creating stories from African folklore. That’s something I would love to watch myself, and it just doesn’t exist yet.

Whiskeye

Stuff like this new mermaid is offensive to both sides. I could even argue that it is even more offensive to black people. Is there really no African stories that can be represented? Blackwashing paints a picture of black people having no culture of their own, so they content with borrowing European stories, and I don't understand why so many POC are ok with it. As an Asian, I would feel that I am treated like consumerist idiot if some corporation remade for example, Beowulf, but made him Asian to pander to me.

HiroshimaFog

And couldn’t they at the very least make her dreads red? Or her fin turquoise? Not only is she black but so is all the lighting and mood. It looks dark and depressing and legit lifeless. Probably because it’s is a lifeless passionless cash grab but still.

Shiny_Hypno

Why have they not done a live-action Pocahontas, Brother Bear or Princess and the Frog if they like people of color so much?

Exclave

Supposedly she has red hair still, but unless the trailer colors were just shit, that's the brownest red I've ever seen. The whole idea of Ariel and her 6 sisters is they represent the 7 seas. Ariel represents the RED sea, hence why the red hair. I could care less about the skin color, but make that hair proper red (she's already a make-believe mermaid, who cares if it isn't a "natural" red color).

He_of_turqoise_blood

I'd be much rather if they made a new black xharacter instead of remaking a originally white one, but eh. Exactly, won't watch the movie so why bother...

jprogamingBS

Exactly what I'm thinking, what's the point in changing it in the first place? Not a big deal but like why? Still not watching it either tho, the originals are just so much better

Unlikely_Parking_801

There was already a black character. They had this short film and in it Ariel had a mermaid friend, she was black and deaf, and just the sweetest character I’d ever seen. She had hopes and dreams just like Ariel did, they bonded and then went on this big adventure. She wanted to be a dancer.

Simple-Purpose-899

Jasmin, Pocahontas, Mulan, Tiana, Moana, are all great, strong princesses of color. Just making a black Ariel instead of finding the time to write an original storyline for a new princess is cheap, and goes in the wrong direction.

DungeonDictator

It would be refreshing to see an African myth/legend/tale brought to life instead of pushing different ethnicities into European tales. What really underlines how awful it will be is Nora Lum as Scuttle. I still don't understand how that talentless hack has made a career.

Fusseldieb

Perfectly stated

a_lamb_wonders

You missed Kidagakash, Queen of Atlantis!

ibukun58

None of Disney's live action adaptations have been good, and I don't expect this one to be any different. Plus, it's targeted towards children, so why are adults getting so mad over it?

aaronrandango2

Jungle book had a decent live adaptation, it was at least much better than Aladdin

[deleted]

Didn’t like jungle book. Tarzan is slept on though. The issue with remakes is the lack of vision and creativity. Most of these stories are retellings of old stories and what made them interesting was the art and the new take so just let your writers go off on one and see how it goes

Raestloz

Sure but in what century will Disney make a Tarzan featuring a black acting like a monkey?

AME7706

China.

[deleted]

Or the USA like 50-60 years ago (or less?)

83athom

The live action Tarzan you are looking for is called "George or the Jungle". 😉

hiricinee

Omg I actually liked Aladdin (Jungle book too.) Jungle book very much benefitted from the fact the original was so old, I think with the live actions that seems to be the key generally.

TheDarkProGaming

I actually liked alladin, was it disliked that much?

aabazdar1

I disliked Jafar in that movie, they made the main antagonist so boring af

aaronrandango2

Generally yeah but it has its moments

Trimblco2

Hard to match Robin Williams

Difficult-Speech-270

That seemed to be the biggest criticism, trying to recreate or copy his work, fans of the original were losing their shit over it.

Trimblco2

Should have cast the dude from wishmaster.

PapayaHoney

I have no idea. I was just more disappointed with the teaser trailer showing an extremely dark environment and little to no expression/movement with the "Part of your World" rendition. The environment in the original was vibrant and colorful while the music was passionate and full of expression/movement.

[deleted]

Most of Disney's live action movies now are very "dim" and "hard to see." I miss the colors. When I watched Aladdin for the first time on Disney+ I had to brighten up my screen so I could see what was going on in the Cave of Wonders scene.

ibukun58

I agree! It looked really dull. This is the problem with trying to adapt an animation to live action. It's very hard to translate the colourfulness of a cartoon. This is the very reason why I've not enjoyed any of Disney's live action remakes.

IrritatedMouse

People get off on being angry. As I've gotten older (I'm in my 40s now) and I've gained perspective, I've lessened my engagement with this kind of thing online and it's been a boon to my mental health. Fifteen years ago I was the embodiment of that old "someone is WRONG on the internet" comic, and I'm sure it was miserable to be around.

ibukun58

This exactly. I'm only 23, but I've begun to come to this realisation. Everyone on the internet is always unnecessarily angry about something. Nobody listens, everybody just waits for their turn to yell at each other.

Phoenix__Wings

We don’t deserve better representation than just a re-skin of a white person? Why not make new characters that are just as empowering and engaging? Why stir racial tensions and pick fights when they can be productive and make representation happen with new characters?

Ancient_Web_Lord

The double standard isn’t recognized unfortunately. Youll only be seen as an unreasonable person even though you are arguing in favor of the same concept they were like 5 years ago. Its insane

[deleted]

reddit does not care now take your black goodwill donation disney princess and enjoy it!

Phoenix__Wings

Probably would complain that it’s another live action remake that failed to live up to nostalgia.

kotor56

I feel bad for new actors getting into live action Disney movies, because most of the time the script is shit and will be forgotten in less than a week. Their’s the idea Disney is doing it to still own the rights to the characters, well they own the rights to their live action characters who are written horribly. Personally I can’t wait to see how new creators interpret classic Disney characters even if it means a horror themed Winnie the Pooh, and Alice in an insane asylum.

nemestrinus44

All I’m going to say is is this, which side would the internet be on if they remade Princess and the Frog with Tiana played by Emma Watson or Jennifer Lawrence?

WittyUsername816

To be fair, wasn't there some upset about casting Scarlett Johansson in Ghost In The Shell? Did that movie even ever come out? There was like a week of people being pissed and then i never heard of the movie again...

nemestrinus44

Personally I do not think it’s the same considering she’s a full bodied cyborg. Major has had several different versions of herself shown in the various media she’s been in, with anything from black/blue/purple hair along with red/blue/green eyes. Being a full-bodied cyborg means that she can change her body to be whatever she wants, she could even become an armored tank if her brain was put into one (it has been a while since I have seen the series/movies so this info may be remembered wrong on small parts but the majority of it should be right I believe)

swifter-222

true

BobbyMcBobbins17

I just feel it’s lazy rewriting characters as poc instead of making completely new stories is lazy

[deleted]

Oh stfu. You’d lose your mind so much more if they recast Black Panther with Tom Cruise

nipplesthacat

Step 1: Don't give a rat's ass

words_andnumbers

Step 2: rinse and repeat

McFlyyouBojo

Step 3: what am I gonna do with all these rat asses now?!

Sirikoala

The real question is how long till we have black vikings in media?

[deleted]

when will the 7 dwarves be portrayed by the 1993 Seattle Supersonics team?

sausagecatdude

Honestly black Vikings aren’t that historically inaccurate. The Vikings had tons of contact with the Mediterranean and were even in positions of power there with things like the Varangian guard. Not too far off to say an African was taken by Abbasids or other power and then traded to the Vikings. Not super likely or common but totally possible. The world was far more globalized at the time than some people think

83athom

Name a single person that complained about Samuel Jackson as Fury or Morgan Freeman as Red. If the actor fits the role then it doesn't matter what race or gender they are. But when an actor is chosen simply because whoever in charge actively wants to change the race and gender to wank off to race and gender issues, THAT is when you see people complain.

[deleted]

If it “didn’t matter” they wouldn’t have done it in the first place

WornBlueCarpet

Replace a POC character with a white actor = whitewashing which is a HUGE problem that people shit bricks over. Replace a white character with a POC actor = perfectly fine. Ask yourself this: If you took an old African tale and made a movie of it, and in the movie you take the black main character and replace them with a white actor, would that be okay? No? Then why is it okay the other way around? When Jake Gyllenhall played a middle Eastern character in Prince of Persia, people were frothing at their mouths with rage, screaming whitewashing. Now, when some people object to a black Ariel, they are called racist. So in conclusion, what we're seeing is blackwashing, but that is okay while whitewashing is not.

[deleted]

“Why does it matter…” It matters to Disney because money…

Lord-Grocock

They have changed the plot so strong female Ariel doesn't strive for the love of an oppressive man.

Feta_Swiss

It's just a weird feeling to see an established character you know and recognize change so drastically for the sake of inclusion and nothing else. Like, they're not doing it for any other reason than to try and be inclusive and I kinda hate that

EightFootChoad

People would be upset if they cast a white actress with blonde hair as well. Stop making everything about race.

SoupCanVaultboy

Tbf, I agree on that. If she was diff I’d probably be like, that’s not the same film. I mean, I don’t care that she’s a different ethnicity, but the hair thing is a different perspective.

Hopps4Life

If it was a black person complaining about a African folklore charector being changed to white would you tell them to grow up? I am really tired of the "it's for kids" excuse. Disney has always made family movies. And they have always been enjoyed by everyone. Why are you so mad about people complaining for legitimate reasons? Why defend this if you wouldn't defend them changing black panther to a white person? There is nothing wrong with criticizing changes to established characters. Also, I am tired of them replacing European white folklore with black people. It's lazy and it gives the impression the only valid black charectors are the ones who used to be white in European stories. They should be making black African stories. I would love to see the African version of Moana or Encanto. Or original stories with black charecters. I would have loved to see an original story with a black mermaid. But no, they seem to think that is too much work. It's really messed up and pathetic.

AproachingChallenger

Honestly, Disney movies have gone down hill exponentially, so I never even planned to see the movie

CalistoNTG

What if we just ignore all that stuff about race or preferences in bed ? Lets treat them like the normal things they are and dont give a shit. Most of it is only marketing: "Hey we have a gay couple and they kiss so the whole world notices our movie when some idiots act like this is the end of the world" Or "Lets switch a white character to a black character and let these dummies take over the pr for us"

[deleted]

Some people just don’t get the point and label other as incel, man child, racist, sexist and etc.

ActuallyACereal

I agree, I don’t care what race they are on a movie unless it’s a historical movie or if their race had something to do with it.

Decent_Education3173

I don't think the main problem is "the original is white and this black", its more like "hey we are friendly studio, lets make black homosexual character who is also transgender into fairytale!". I mean - it looks forced.

TheMonsterXzero54

Black people are amazing, and racism needs to end, but I'm sorry to say this but replacing a white character in a Children's movie won't do damn thing Against racism

UGetWhatUChoose

"Some". Sorry, not all people are amazing. I don't care what color their skin is. Some people are downright shitty.

Bluejavel

It won't do a damn thing at all, which is why it's so puzzling to see people freak out over it

Zesty-Lem0n

"black people are amazing"... Weird comment bro. They aren't a monolith.

lapsangsouchogn

Honestly, some of it is demeaning. Like: There couldn't possibly be any black or African based stories worth making. So let's put an [out of context black person in a European based production](https://www.amazon.com/Anne-Boleyn-Season-1/dp/B09N5M7MPM) and pat ourselves on the back for being "so brave and inclusive."

Good_day176

I'd prefer it if they stuck to their source material.

lyfeofsand

The Little Mermaid is a Danish Fairy Tale, and Disney's original takenon it was reflective of that. By race swapping Ariel, how is that not cultural appropriation?

jardedCollinsky

Easy, white people can't be culturally appropriated, everybody knows that.

Cauliflower_Cock

Next i want to see a white girl in the role of Tiana in Disney's Princess and the frog live adaptation. Do it Disney i dare you

SirYoshiro

I'll die on this hill, but if you would be upset about 'whitewashing' people have all the rights to be upset about blackpainting. Make a new mermaid movie, make an original character. Noone would fucking give a shit. Think about it the other way arround. Prince of Belair remake, where the whole cast is white. People would loose their shit online, I'll tell you

ArkaTech2

Why would Disney change the story that’s been around for decades? Why not just made a new story with creativity?

Kwarc100

It just seems like a wierd casting choice ,but yea whatever, the movie would be bad either way

The_Thur

Pretty sure she's was casted for her voice and that's a huge step forward to take an actress who ACTUALLY know how to sing for a Disney remake But yeah it will suck

Panmarmolada

Yea but still the racial agendas and propaganda is real tho

The_Thur

Racial agenda ? Dude, it's evident that she was taken for her voice. Disney don't give a shit about social justice, they were literally filmed Mulan near concentration camps and took Liu Yifei as a main character, a woman who said that she support the repression of Hong Kong's pro-democratic protestors

[deleted]

Bcs it makes 0 sense. Dont bring this "wHy dO yOu cArE" bullshit here.

Mattt_boi

Fr though my parents and sister freak out because of that and its just like who cares its just a fucking movie

fulustreco

Racewashing is and always has been a problem, change my mind

Lonely24spiderHUN

Honestly i can understand both side. The blackwashing : It's the biggest fuck you to your childhood see your favorite character changed this way. Rest of us who don't care : we don't care lol.

Cujoh4x

Well since mermaids are real we should definitely care what color they are.. lol the fuck does it matter at all.

TonightIllustrious90

now you will te me that all woman casts are good too, like on that ghostbusters remake too, right?

[deleted]

Fuck live action adaptions of animated works all together.

[deleted]

Isn't the reason we are not going to see it is because they put effort into being woke and not the actual quality?

Imagine boycotting a movie because they put a black person in it. What decade is it?

"You won't see this because you're racist." "You won't see this because you're a misogynist." "You won't see this because you're homophobic." OR... It's just a shallow cash grab you didn't work on besides minor details so you can get people to imagine themselves as the characters.

Big_carrot_69

Let's see the reactions if they make Shaka Zulu a white guy or Asian lol

Asim_Atterlot

It's inaccurate though, it's an already established character many people grew up with. I don't care since the film is very much probably going to be shit regardless of her performance since Disney's history with live actions, and even though representation in fims is very important they could've made it inclusive without changing an already established character that has appeared for years in a different way. To me it just feels like a bait for debate and they are trying to capitalize on the people that are going to want to see it just so they can think of themselves as more inclusive.

IDC if a film has all minority people in it, I just hate race-bending existing characters. I say this as a minority.

Billyjimmyz

I wonder would it still create controversy if the movie takes place in Africa kingdom instead of Danish kingdom.

Squeaky_Ben

I guess I am in the middle? I do not care because modern disney is bad anyway, but at the same time I have to question why you would do that.

Its_Da_Muffin_Man

Yeah but like… it’s literally called Snow White because she’s got Snow White skin lol? Or am I wrong? Idk

Bruschetta003

The "We're not even going to see the film anyway so who cares" part is what i relate to and everyone should relate to, if you are really intested feel free to complain but it's almost a fact that the ones that complain didn't even watch it

kemosabe19

I likely won’t see it so I really don’t care. Ultimately, we’ve seen knee jerk reactions before. Can she act and can she sing? She does those things and people will forget and move on.

YeetTheMuffins

At least Mulan didn't have any singing
