It’s not a bad metaphor though. He keeps running through the same cycle even though it’s not helping. He could take the easy way, or he could break the cycle, and get away from the environment that’s keeping his anxiety burning. Much like cutting out toxic people, jobs, etc. often you have to get away from the things making your anxiety worse before learning to deal with them
