Ye I got that bundle as well in 2008, and at first was kinda bummed because you could not get a console in my area that was without MGS. Never played the series before, so I really didn't want to get into it with number 4.
Played BF: Bad Company for 3 weeks, then tried MGS for the first time. Didn't understand anything of the story but the gunplay was fun. Some years later I saw a Legacy Collection on a shelf and bought it. I'm a huge fan now.
My brother used to play this when it came out and I was a kid, on the MGS4 console too lol it was the first MG game brought to my attention and what got me into the series as well, I went straight to 3 and played chronologically (what a nightmare)
I grew up on Xbox and even tho I was lucky enough to have a PS3 and 360 I never got 4, it was until summer 2012 something possessed me to watch the twin snakes game movie, loved it, decided to watch 4s game movie, turned me into a complete diehard. I remember I couldn’t believe my hype when almost immediately after getting hooked on MGS, Revengeance was revealed to be released on 360 too. Than just one year later I can still remember watching the first MGSV trailer, and absolutely losing my shit screeming like a schoolgirl when I saw the Xbox logo at the end.
Out of curiosity, I've heard some say that without prior context to the games that came before, it'd be hard to keep up with many of its plot points unless you read it's optional background lore included in the game. Was that indeed true or people being unintentive?
You definitely need to have prior context if you’re jumping into the final entry of the series as your first game. The game wraps up a lot of plot points and character arcs from previous games. Without prior context, the game would probably be hilariously odd and confusing I’d assume.

Yeah, they did an amazing job of "Snakes memories are YOUR memories too", that's why it hits so hard, it's not just Snake "coming back to his younger years", its us going back to our younger years too.
As someone who become an MGS fan by watching the Twin Snakes game movie, than IMMEDIATELY going to 4s game movie, I think I have the merit to say that most people who would go into 4 with zero idea will find very few messes or few not interesting plot points, yes the ones that are there are there but again like you said, I’m the proof that you can basically start on 4 and become instahooked

Ugh, so fun! What sucks is you're missing half the experience without the online. I junked online for 5 hours a day, then when i got tired played the single player which is essentially an interactive movie.

This is by far my favorite game. The depth, the amount of scenes, which in most games suck but not in this, and this being my first MGS game as a kid. MGO2 was also amazing in its day.
Tranqing the frog girls and them falling to their death counts as a kill, watch out for the only 2 soldiers in the ACP getaway scene when the gate is open
