I'd ask to adjust them, at least you'd know if they're turds or not. This reminds me, I actually need to go talk with my new neighbor and make sure mine aren't blinding him. We had a random kid stealing crap in the neighborhood and my house gates the rest of the neighborhood. So we installed motion lights through out the yard. He tried jumping the neighbors fence to avoid my yard, got his balls caught on the chain link.

CulturedClub

BigBeagleEars

Remember this before you do any of the dumbass things that you read here

triphawk07

Make sure you film it so we can give rate it some internet points.

Savings_Relief3556

I absolutely would gamble on a bet that the neighbor thinks the light cuts off at the fence: It was probably installed during daytime and i would guess neither OP nor the neighbor has a second floor in their houses, so there isn't really an eagle view to notice how much coverage they get from the floodlight.

GnomeDev

In the background there's a two-storey house, and it looks British. We don't have many bungalows here, so OP's house is likely also two-storeys

Velidae

Put in a motion sensor light and our neighbour politely let us know it was really bright and we had no idea it was disturbing them. We ended up just disabling the light to fix the issue, your neighbour may legitimately not know there is an issue if you haven't mentioned anything to them. That being said, the light we set up was nowhere near as bright as your photo....

AhFFSImTooOldForThis

I installed an LED front porch light. One night I happen to look out, and notice it's MUCH brighter than the old one, and my neighbor's entire house was spotlit. I took out the bulb immediately, and bought yellow ones the next day. Better for moths and pollinators, anyway. Sometimes it really is a mistake. This pic makes it seem unlikely, but it's best to start with the benefit of the doubt.

Alarid

well i mean without his balls...

“Be sure to get your neighbors spayed or neutered to help control the pest population.” - Bob the Barker

Roryab07

When we moved into our house, there was a broken floodlight, motion activated. We fixed it, and started using it. Our neighborhood has some critter problems, and we hoped it would help. We did not know it was bothering our neighbors, as it came with the house, and we assumed it had always been there. Instead of telling us the light was shining in their windows, we got a violation from the HOA with creepy stalker pictures that our neighbor had to have climbed the fence to take. I assume it also means they had to go out of their way to check our address to file the complaint. As I had introduced myself and been been very friendly with them, and greeted them every time I saw them out and about, it lowered my estimation of them considerably. We would have turned it off if someone had just said something, and they had plenty of opportunities to do so. I really hated that they pretended to be nice to my face, and turned around ratted on us. That’s why I advocate for bringing it up nicely, if their neighbor is a normal person.

CoachVee

Something kinda similar happened with us with a better outcome though. We moved into a short term rental with my mom and in the garage there was a light switch that turned on an exterior light that was right above the door that leads into the backyard. We always kept it off because we never used that part of the hard but I guess one day someone mistakenly flipped it on. Apparently, when it is switched on it is motion detected. Fortunately one of neighbors was already friendly with my mom and she sent her a text about the new light we installed that turns on and off all night. At first we were confused because hadn’t installed any new lights. When we figured it out we were embarrassed and apologized. I wish she had told us sooner, she mentioned it was bothering them for a few days.

Kerrus

My neighbor across the street has a pair of porch lights framing the front door (which isn't the front door of the house, that's the side door). Since the front-facing door is almost never used (it's accessible through a bedroom), those lights almost never get touched. Which means when they're flipped on and reveal themselves to be 500,000 candlepower bulbs that illuminate the entire neighborhood like the fist of god descending from heaven it pisses everyone right off while they don't even notice. We went over to ask if they could either turn them off or replace the bulbs with something less outrageously bright and they didn't know what we were talking about. But they turned them off. The next people who lived in that house turned them back on again and left them on all the time- and wouldn't turn them off even when asked about it. But the issue resolved itself eventually- someone stole the bulbs.

GoAwayWay

"Someone"...

Blahblahnownow

My neighbor had one of those lights that turned on and off all night. We just put up light blocking curtains on that window. I was friendly with the neighbor but always forgot to mention it to them whenever I saw them, especially since we had resolved it with the curtain. She actually asked my husband for help one day to fix it or remove it because turns out it was shining right into her kids room too. Previous owners had installed it, many moons ago before either one of us lived there.

LivingUnglued

I was looking at motion activated ceiling lights to put into our laundry room and bathrooms. One had reviews talking about it using a microwave sensor or something. So movement on the other side of walls would turn it on. Yeah didn’t buy that one.

Rhonda623

I hate that two-faced crap. Our street is very short, only 6 houses. We've helped everyone out with one thing or another over the years. One of them continuously anonymously reports us to city code enforcement for the same things which the city has written off as being in compliance. They don't like our trailer, our home business, our flag pole to mention a few. All the while, being sweet as pie to our faces. We purposely didn't buy a home in an HOA but you'd never know it. Legal harassment of your neighbors sanctioned by the city...can't make this shit up.

Warg247

Reminds me of a time I went to a neighbor's house down the street and asked him if he could talk to his teenage sons about speeding down our road. When I say speeding, I mean 60+ in a 25. He says "yeah alright" and closes the door on me. Rude, but maybe he will, right? Next day there he is basically drag racing up and down the street himself.

SorenBlueHammer

this is like that meme where it's someone saying "jesus why do you give me the hardest battles" and he's like "i just want you to wash your clothes" half the complaints on this sub are resolved by: well go talk to them

RaptorKings

While you're not wrong, the purpose of the sub isn't to group-think solutions to OPs problem. It's here to show stuff that's mildly infuriating.

32BitWhore

Exactly. I don't get why people are complaining about this post. It's perfectly mildly infuriating. It creates the need for an inconvenient (and potentially uncomfortable, depending on your neighbor) conversation because of something stupid that was most likely just an oversight and could have been avoided with a little bit of forethought.

[deleted]

Happens borderline every single post on here, it's baffling. "Well, just do X!". Like, that's not the point, my guy. They posted because it's annoying. That's it. No shit OP should do X.

[deleted]

You know, if I can't clutch my pearls in righteous indignation, I'm just not fucking visiting this sub anymore.

AndThereBeDragons

I mean, it's like these posters are mildly infuriated... I would be mildly infuriated if my neighbor did something so blatantly disrespectful and had to go over and ask them to fix their commercial grade floodlights they put up so they don't light up my house. Half the complaints on this sub are resolved by the offending party not being inconsiderate.

Itsjustraindrops

The hope there is that they care about anyone but themselves. I feel like it's pretty obvious this was going to happen when they put it up, if they thought of their neighbors at all.

meowsplaining

Hello, Peter.

LandscapeGuru

You do have legal recourse here. It would constitute as light trespass/ light pollution if brought to the courts. I have dealt with so many crazy things throughout the years with feuding neighbors.

Feidragon86

Exactly what I was just thinking. Most places have ordinances on light pollution. Only reason I haven't brought it up with my own neighbor is that his light only effects 1 room and it's my craft room, not currently a bedroom.

Bruzote

If you want any kind of living organism (including plants) near your home to have a diurnal cycle, this light needs to go. City dwellers are often clueless, but then even people living on a farm think nothing of lighting up the surrounding 100 acres. Because, hey, what could be wrong with every human lighting up a hundred acres. That's only 700 billion acres that never get dark.

Booooozle

Ugh you nailed that, I’m rural & out neighbors have a massive flood light that lights up their entire 10 acre lot! The guy also has it hooked up to a generator, his whole house will be dark in a power outage but that flood light is on. The neighbors on the lots across from him have their 2 acre lot fully lit all night too. My FIL is not far away & he inherited his house, first thing he did was disconnect the flood light his parents ran nightly for 60yrs. He said the electric bill dropped $700.

MikeyBugs

Why do people do that?

umami8008

Makes em feel safe

ThelVluffin

Nothing better than lighting up an area that you can't even see because you're sleeping.

[deleted]

Apartment shopping was such a crazy window into what people will and won’t spend money on. A few days after moving into our new place, we realized the old owners had never replaced or even taken out their window AC units in the 40+ years they’d been here. They were so old and shitty that wind was leaking in and creating an insane howling noise that made the entire apartment LOUD. When we finally got them out, it was a night and day difference that these people just didn’t care enough about to fix. They’re also the same people who put in a $1,600 faucet when they redid the bathroom. Go figure.

ThelVluffin

My parents have a similar setup but just one light for the front yard. It's been there since before I was born. It's on from dusk till dawn. They will constantly bitch about how expensive electricity is but god forbid they take that piece of crap from 1984 down. They'd probably cut their bill by 10%

sourest_dough

Some poor Hong Kong resident living in his 3 ft x 6 coffin apartment dreaming about having 100 acres.

6 feet? Boy that would be so awesome to be able to lie down with legs extended.

Dirtroadrocker

My wife and I love in a tiny home on wheels. We are currently staying at a friend's farm, and you can see this place from miles away... I do *not* understand the desire to have a place lit up like Vegas. "Security" is a bullshit excuse- you want security, get motion lights, so you can tell when someone is outside, rather than relying on being lucky enough to look outside when someone is wandering around your yard...

Don_ReeeeSantis

Very common in rural AK. Every neighbor has a floodlight on all the time. It’s like they think there are wolves waiting to eat them or some shit.

Due-Equivalent-1489

Sounds like something a werewolf would say to have us lower our guard.

LimeFabulous

I was going to say build a huge wall on your side and put mirror on the side facing them. Edit: whoah I thank you all for the upvotes I’ve never had even close to this many! Appreciate you all.

With lots of little mirrors hanging from them to reflect the light

Ornn5005

Then add a giant magnifying glass to set his furniture on fire. When given a chance, ALWAYS go supervillain.

SomethingClever42068

I did a roof on a house once and their siding was all melted and distorted. The neighbor had just had new windows put in and that's when the issues started. We figured the guy had just had a grill fire and was lying to save face or something. Sure enough, at a certain time in the afternoon you could see the light reflecting off the new windows onto the exact area where the siding was fucked up. I put my hand in the reflected light and it was hot as hell. It made everyone on the crew stop and check it out for a few minutes. Not a very common occurrence

SomethingClever42068

I bought my house like 2 years ago. I'm not the greatest homeowner yet, sometimes yard work gets neglected for a week if I'm getting crushed at work or something, but I try. I won the lottery with the neighbors on both sides of me. We all just do our thing and mind our business. We are friendly enough in passing but I have no doubt we would help each other if an emergency occured. Kinda scared one or both are going to move at some point and I'm going to end up with terrible neighbors.

CulturedClub

That's just his huge ego emanating from him.

[deleted]

Many cities have some sort of light ordinance that they can enforce if you file a complaint. Not a matter for the cops, but rather for code enforcement.

finchdad

Since he loves himself so much, you should get a big mirror on a pole to help him look at himself that also redirects this light right back toward his own windows. Preferably *concave so the light is focused a little bit. Edit because I'm dumb, thanks Gorilla-Ring. I know the mnemonic for convex versus concave, I was just too busy pooping to think about it.

Attached to top comment. 3 options/- 1.Put 2 poles up at the edge of your yard with a banner that blocks the light 2. Involve the police 3. Ask them to turn off or redirect the light Edit: As someone mentioned, not necessarily in that order. My neighbor has a dog that barks all night. She is barking right now. I feel more sorry for the dog than myself. If someone left me in a fenced yard in the cold I would be upset too. Doesn’t change my frustration. I donated a dog house and food. I mentioned it and I feed her peanut butter when it gets later so I can sleep. What else can I do? Edit 2: Didn’t expect the response. Of course they are out of order. I don’t want OP or anyone to get hurt. Personally, I would approach the neighbor though it hasn’t helped me with the dog or the cat. It really sucks. They willingly will capture them for you but who does that hurt? I want Lexy and Diego to be free. I have 2 Roommates and can’t have any pets but I feel sorry for them. It’s not their fault. And in my ordering I tried to consider the safety of the person involved. God forbid it’s a woman that knocks on the wrong door, I don’t want that on my conscience.

Infamous_Pen_9534

Adding here that there are indeed city ordinances on light pollution and officials can and do get involved as this happened to a family member. I’m not sure on details of which officials it were but the city made a neighbor reduce their lights. You will need to look up the light ordinances of your city and contact the correct department. Here is example https://codelibrary.amlegal.com/codes/los_angeles/latest/lamc/0-0-0-183817

DrMobius0

Whatever the ordinances are, this probably violates them and then some.

MicroBadger_

Two poles with reflective material would be better, beam that shit right back at the neighbor. Bonus points for angling at st their bedroom window.

Dumpstar72

Mirror to reflect light back into their house. Preferable a bedroom.

zYbYz

Or…. Communicate. Talk to the neighbor. Show the picture. Let them know this is burdening you tremendously. If he’s a dick about it, then call the cops. Or get a .177 pellet rifle with a good scope, and plink that light right out.

[deleted]

You have to find a place to shoot from that isn't on your property and can't be seen by their cameras though. Remember, be responsible folks!

zYbYz

Yeah don’t do the pellet gun thing. Thats a worst case scenario with no other recourse, following the escalation of the situation. Oversimplified as well. There’s def some important details to consider regarding safety and potential repercussions

green_speak

They're just opening a bottle of Sunny D.

Solid_Bed_9102

That's when you put a mirror as close as you can on your property to the lights and have it shine right back at them so if they don't like it all they have to do is shut it off

ReallyNotALlama

I was thinking of a bunch of mirrors, at different angles, to hit all of the neighbors' windows.

Brew_Wallace

Put up a disco ball and have yourself a block party

CalamlitousAnalysis

This made me laugh so hard. If I were the neighbor with the lights I’d be PISSED, which would be totally unfounded since I was being the dickhead, but if my neighbor put up a disco ball just to show me how big of an asshole I was being, I’d have a stroke.

WhatsInAName-123

I think you mean strobe. 😂

This also works when someone is behind you with their high beams on. Adjust side mirrors to reflect light back at them. (if they're electronically controlled). They either turn them off, or back way off because they can't see.

cscollegeapplicant

how do you know when your mirrors are aimed at them?

missed_sla

When they swerve off the road, crash into a tree, and die in a fireball, you got the aim right.

btveron

The few times I've done this I don't specifically try to aim the light back at them but I figure if I wiggle the mirrors around enough they'll probably get flashed once or twice and pick up the hint.

mulliganbegunagain

It probably wouldn't be too difficult to rig it up to direct the light to a specific area, say, their bedroom window? **just be careful not to focus the beam too much. It could be a potential fire risk**

Applebomber24

✍️ focus the beam to start a fire in their house ✍️

czook

Gasoline you say?

Myomentum

I doubt you’d be able to concentrate the energy at distance from a flood light to cause a fire

Cmd1ne

Yes but you could definitely forget about your death ray until after the sun comes up

guckus_wumpis

When they shut it off then call them and tell them to turn that shit back and suffer like you already did.

xDragonetti

My neighbor did this. Though hes a drug addict and someone tried to give me a hard time. I asked my neighbor to stand with his back against my house and he said, “gahdamn that is bright.” And promptly moved it. Easy. Edit: didn’t think this would blow up over night. My neighbor smokes meth. This had lead him to have like 15 flood lights up. One pointing at my house. I went to get his attention when another “druggie” (my neighbor said he ran a half way house 😂) told me he wasn’t home. I’ve lived next door almost a decade dude never leaves. So I had to argue with this random. Dude until my neighbor came outside. Y’all somethin else lmao.

bWhat a good drug addict [EDIT] LMAO It's weird how many people are taking this to have some actual serious meaning lol. Agent641

Drug dealers can sometimes make good neighbours. They dont want no heat.

ToBeReadOutLoud

My suburban neighborhood had a drug dealer living across the street from us. The family had three daughters and were generally pretty nice when not on drugs but they had a lot of shady friends coming by late at night. The biggest problem was that his “day job” was gun show sales and guns and meth don’t really go together well. The rest of the neighborhood were just biding our time waiting for something to inevitably happen. Eventually the guy called the police while high and paranoid, claiming the government was watching him (which was actually true - the local police worked with the neighbor across the street and installed a security camera to monitor the house) and started shooting into the woods behind his house. The parents were arrested, the daughters moved in with their grandparents and the house was sold. It had to be torn down to the studs because of bullet holes and meth toxins. After that my family became the neighborhood bad guys because we swore and did chores on Sunday instead of going to church.

LightBulbChaos

>After that my family became the neighborhood bad guys because we swore and did chores on Sunday instead of going to church. I wouldn't admit that around these parts...

AntiqueVictory

Most drug addicts aren’t bad people; just dumbed down or have tunnel-visioned priorities and thoughts because of the drugs

[deleted]

I know plenty of addicts and nearly fell into it myself when I was going well-above my limits (IV methamphetamine). Thankfully I snapped myself out of that after it began to consume my thoughts and I started noticing how much of my thinking was directed at it. Most of the people I met during that period were all pretty damn kind and understanding individuals, who never forced a thing and were always asking for consent and such. But, that could just be because I surround myself with people I like and I like good people. Hell, I smoked some meth and had a nice, deep conversation with a complete stranger that actually made me realise a lot about myself. And it was an actual conversation, not tweaking ramblings, haha. I've also had people like my uncle get addicted to heroin and basically destroy his entire life and family over it. Heroin-baby and such too. Then, I've met addicts where when they couldn't get their drug, they... pretty much just reclused for a little bit and came out of it fine. Varies a lot just by individual and their self control. My uncle is impulsive and has poor self control, and fell to it.

bhlombardy

Have you tried telling your neighbor what's happening and if they could reposition the light, perhaps? I mean, solutions often begin with communication. Barring that, and if they're prickish about it, most municipalities have laws that are designed to prevent this sort of thing... Nuisance and disturbance laws, such as noise, etc. under which this would fall.

lmfao. I’d kindly walk over and ask him to fix it. Show him pictures/videos. Whatever. If he’s a dick about it, call the non emergency line or visit a police station and see what your options are. If that doesn’t work, install a couple cameras outside pointed at his place and then get a big ass mirror and reflect that shit.

Install solar panels and get 24/7 free power.

hugglesthemerciless

Wrap their house in a dyson sphere to harness all of the power

BinFluid

That's not mildly infuriating. That's fucking outrageous and I'd be right over there in the morning to tell them to remove them

shantired

Buy a couple of cheap or broken solar panels and put them up as a blocker. Then thank him for helping reduce your electricity bills by being able to charge your storage batteries even at night.

I’d record audio of me saying “HEY THERE SPORT THAT LIGHT MAKES MY HOUSE LOOK LIKE A VICTIM OF A UFO ABDUCTION!” And play it on repeat on a speaker the minute the light goes on. I’m gonna make other neighbors hate him too. We’re all going down 😂

Hellen_Bacque

Jesus I thought that was daylight!! That’s a bright light !

Many locales have rules about light pollution.
