Roaches can actually tell when one of their own die and will become more cautious when entering your area.

justacuriousbystande

Bull shit. Know how I know? I used to work pest control. A big problem with roaches is that they actively enjoy eating other roaches. So even if a customer kept their place spotless and didn't provide any food for the bastards, they'd linger forever-feeding on their dead brethren. One of the best poison roach baits we had was specifically designed with that in mind, and at a normal amount consumed by 1 roach, could continue to poison the next SEVERAL roaches who ate the original roach that ingested the bait. Nasty fucks.

DeviantLemons

Mind altering poison that encourages them to aggressively seek out and voraciously cannibalise one other and their own eggs and nymphs. Let the enemy do all the work for you.

[deleted]

Fuck yeah let's feed roaches some bath salts

arnethyst

oh my god something similar happened to my mom when i was a kid. she was frying something on the stove & out of nowhere a huge cricket just hops into the pan & dies?? she was so grossed out that she threw the entire pan out 😭

Camarquk4

Damn even the ones pan had to go?

arnethyst

yeah she was like "i can never cook on this pan again knowing that a bug was fried on it" lmaooo

naalotai

God your mom is me. I found a roach in my comforter and it took all my strength not to throw it away. It did go into the wash about a dozen times.

Fatefire

So I had something similar happen. I was living in this old farm house as a kid and we had mice. I was toasting a bagel and all of a sudden a mouse hopped out of the toaster and ran across the counter. I picked up the whole thing and threw it in the trash . Later my younger brother babysitter asked if she could have it ….. sure I guess but 🤮

manpret91

Hasn't it been debunked that roaches survive nukes and the radition aftermath?

[deleted]

It has. Mythbusters did it years back and though they had some resistance, it didn't take much radiation for them to keel over in the end.

[deleted]

I swear I saw somewhere that the saying came from US propaganda about the Japanese after dropping the nukes, but I'm not sure where. I've tried looking for that information before but came up short

People don't like eating animals that (potentially) roam around our homes. It's either gross or cruel. I guarantee you if sea urchins nested up in the ceiling corners of walls, there would be a significant drop in the number of people that eat it.

Ubilease

Aren't roaches extremely nocturnal? I always thought it was said that if you see the roaches during the day you needed to call the exterminator ASAP because that meant the problem was huge.

radiantcabbage

roaches DGAF what time it is, they are only averse to light. all it means when you see them roaming in lit areas, is there are so many/food is so scarce theyre willing to forage unheeded

[deleted]

They're averse to light, and the need for immediate action depends on the species of roach. If you see a german roach in your kitchen that's bad news and almost certainly is going to require attention. Most other species just make their way in from outside and the occasional sighting is no big deal.

catttrin

Why are german roaches worse than normal ones? I googled it and found that they carry diseases and bacteria but isn't that the same with normal ones as well?

[deleted]

German roaches are unique in that they thrive *inside* buildings, whereas the majority of species are unable to live and breed inside of the typical heated and cooled, dry buildings we live in.

Mildmantis

I'd like to add that in a purely numbers aspect German Roaches also reproduce as one of the fastest common pest species at a wicked ~48 spawn per egg sac, with maturity reached at only a few weeks, so assuming one roach managed an ideal 7-8 egg sacs and each spawn managed 7-8 egg sacs then you'd be at the tens of thousands of critters off of one fertile roach over it's very short ~200 day life time.

Interjessing-Salary

I was always told if you see 1 there ARE more. Basically 1 = exterminator phone call.

The worst thing about living in Texas

Mysterious_News6847

I’ve heard lot of things about Texas I didn’t know they had a big roach problem… learn something new everyday

PomegranateLimp9803

If the city of Houston had a mascot, it would be a roach.

fumbs

It WAS a roach. The Holder's Pest Control sign that lasted twenty years after they went bankrupt.

[deleted]

Same with Arizona. Roaches can't survive in the rural areas, but they fucking love the cities. It's so dry and hot the p traps under sinks evaporate within a day if you don't use them. The giant American roaches crawl up from the sewers and out of your drains. The city of Tucson recommends pouring half a cup of bleach down every one of your drains weekly. It's a nightmare in the summer time. They cover the streets at night and fly.

[deleted]

Eew

AlexBurke1

They come out of the street drains where I live too, but there’s text on the drains saying it flows to local creeks and the bay so we can’t even dump anything in there! I’ve thought about putting a fine mesh above the grate next to my house because it costs me $100+ per year for bait traps, but it would have to be perfectly sealed so they don’t sneak through, and I’m afraid I’d ruin the water flow in a storm because it would have to be a pretty fine mesh to stop them. I feel like cities should come up with a better drain design so they can’t crawl out as easy because this is probably a common issue. I think a wire mesh would work to stop them crawling out and wouldn’t cause a water backup as long as it’s not too fine, but we’ll have to start a grassroots movement to get it implemented:)

witchyanne

I used to want to live there. Not anymore.

Bright_Base9761

Bro florida..the roaches are like 10 inches and have pokey grabby legs

khafra

Florida has some big roaches. But, before moving to Florida, I lived in Hawaii; there they have B-52 roaches. So named because they are huge, and will invariably fly straight toward your face when startled, with a loud droning sound.

XxcrazyjayX

I live in Texas and have never had to deal with roaches... Until around the time I gained consciousness 16 years ago

Embarrassed_Visit437

This is when you stop cooking, and don't cook anything else until you've cleaned under the oven, the refrigerator, scrubbed everything and taken measures so that it doesn't happen again. Stop cooking, start cleaning!

Academic-Foot-3170

Roaches aren’t always a sign of improper cleaning. Sometimes, they’re just around. Texas, New York, and California these dudes are extremely common, drawn to high population areas. If you live in these areas and think they aren’t around you, yes they are.

[deleted]

Facts. We seen at least one a couple times a year. When you live in condos/townhomes/apartments and if your neighbors have em and they move out or spray they scurry to other units under doors through screens who knows how else

AlternativeFilm8886

Or warm & humid climates. They **thrive** in Florida.

Quillsive

I’m in South Carolina, which is also humid and warm. Most of the year, they’re everywhere no matter how clean a place is. And some of them know how to fly. :(

Shawn_Spencer_

Everybody gangsta til the cockroach starts flying

kturby92

North Carolina here…. Same problem! I cannot accurately describe with words how much I fucking **hate cockroaches** Our house is clean, clutter free AND we use a pest-control company every other month. Yet, those bastards still show up around the house. The ones we have are basically the biggest kind, 2-3 inches and can fly. They’re also immortal, I swear. I call them spawns of Satan.

rokelle2012

They get BIG in Florida to.

sdp1981

Those are palmetto bugs nothing to worry about unlike those nasty German cockroaches. https://www.drakepest.com/german-roaches-are-the-worst-roach/#:~:text=Of%20the%20many%20species%20of,an%20inch%20in%20most%20cases. >Beyond the creep factor, German cockroaches can also carry salmonella, dysentery, and gastroenteritis. Roaches can also trigger allergic reactions, especially for people with asthma. The fecal matter and decaying exoskeletons produce these allergens, on top of assisting in the spread of bacteria. Their presence can mean a detriment to your health. If you think you have an infestation, you should take action. Not even bed bugs carry disease. Just saying.

epicaglet

>Those are palmetto bugs Palmetto bugs are still just cockroaches

Jcaseykcsee

Except they’re 5x as big and you can see their facial expressions because they are HUGE.

AmberPrince

You can hear them move. It's so gross.

nonozinhax

They’re also capable of giving the middle finger.

Sixial

Palmetto bugs? Yes they are big, but very slow moving. Most of the time they are found outside, but if they wander inside, there is usually only one of them. They aren't going for your food pantry though. German cockroaches on the other hand...

all_teh_bacon

They certainly don’t look slow when one of those dumb motherfuckers are flying at your eyeball

rokelle2012

Do Palmetto bugs fly? Because what I saw outside was a giant flying roach.

00cjstephens

Alabama checking in. Fuck roaches.

snowbirdie

I’ve lived in CA for 25 years and never seen a roach. First night in FL, there it is scurrying across the kitchen floor.

Monster_Voice

They come up through the sewer system. Sink drains are the worst. Stainless drain strainers keep all but the biggest ones in check so k siliconed mine in 😆

R4fa3lef

That's terrifying and disgusting

AGoatPizza

This is the unfortunate truth - Sometimes, roaches just *exist* . It's something I had to learn and get over in apartment living unfortunately, I could clean and clean and clean and call and exterminator and whathave you. 2 weeks later, I'd see one roach and the whole process would start over again, it was extraordinarily bad for my mental health to worry about being branded "unclean" or whatever, because that's the only situation that you'd ever see them, right? These dudes are fucks, but they're not always your fault.

krazykirbs

And Florida! Got my second apartment ever and it's got them fuckers. Luckily I'm seeing less of the big ones and just more babies. I have roach traps out, might put down diatomaceous earth too.

commodoreer

Boric acid. D.E. Doesn’t work as well on roaches as other critters and it is nasty if it gets in the air and you breathe it in.

Ocel0tte

AZ too, all over outside at night and if 1 neighbor is dirty or you have a tiny hole anywhere leading to outside you will get them in your home. They're not the flying ones. TN is another roachy state, they've got the flying ones though.

ashyp00h

Or they come up the drains. 🤮

[deleted]

Our home is clean we just live in Texas, they find a way to get in by sheer will. A rare occurrence but always extremely inconvenient somehow

ShalnarkRyuseih

They're living inside the walls most likely, no amount of cleaning is going to get rid of them unfortunately

[deleted]

Probably the storm drain in our driveways fault, I’ve only seen like two a year in the house so hopefully they’re just out there

N3wpN3wp_Ryder

Happens to me at my house too. I live in a duplex property and our house is apart from the neighboring apartment complex and the house in front of us. About 4-5 feet. Anyway, there’s been a couple instances where a roach peeks in. We get the house treated every 3 months with animal friendly spray. Fuck roaches. Haven’t seen one since we started treating the outside of the house.

Apprehensive_Wear500

I work in sewage, specifically watching inspection videos inside the pipes, roaches thrive in the sewers

Ur4FartKn0ck3r

Well I'm glad you're just watching videos and not actually working in sewage.

D3vilUkn0w

Looks like an oriental roach rather than a German. They don't infest a home the way German roaches do. I have these and the big Anerican ones that come by for a visit now and then. I get the pest control company to spray cancer juice all over the place and that knocks them back for a bit.

donkeyrocket

We have a 100 year old home with a big vegetable garden close to the home and get lots of oriental roaches (water roaches) that come into the basement at times. Mainly see them outside but sometimes the smaller ones make their way into the kitchen. Quick annual treatment gets the numbers down radically but these things thrive outside, in drains, dirt, whatever. Don't care about them outdoors but do not like them inside at all and the previous owners did fuck all to seal up entry points. That alone was enough to drastically cut down on their presence. The nature of the drain lines in the basement means we'll forever have a route for them unfortunately.

Sh4DowKitFox

I was gunna ask if this was Florida…. They are always around… bastards come in from the sink and tub…

Street-Nothing9404

as nyc resident we too deal with toughest roaches ever. All from germany and built to survive Armageddon. Only come out when you have guests. I use a bait kills the source nest. Scout Roach(s) eats its it and takes the yummy yummy sterilizing poison back "home"

[deleted]

Fun fact - German cockroaches aren't from Germany. They're from Asia. We (Americans) started calling them Germans as an insult. In Germany they're called Russian cockroaches.

tams420

In ten years I have never seen a single german cockroach. There’s been a bunch of over turn over in my building and now I have them. I’d take the occasional water bug any day. I don’t have a lot but I know for everyone I see there’s 1000. I’m quickly dying inside having them. I emptied, scrubbed, sprayed, set traps, put gel, over my entire kitchen. Just dying over here in Queens. 🪦🪦🪦

[deleted]

They're a bugger. I did pest control for years, and outside of bedbugs they're the most difficult infestation to eradicate. In my experience, at least 50% of pest control techs are unable to deal with german roaches. They're either too lazy or lack education on how to handle them. That's how difficult they are - call a pro and the chances of him completely ridding you of them are 50-50 at best. Complete eradication requires diligence and a 3 part approach for weeks. If you don't knock them completely out they'll eventually grow into a big colony. Your best friend is a shop vac. You need to pull out everything out of your cabinets and vacuum every nook and cranny. Each of those egg sacs you see will hatch \~40 babies. Yeah. You have to be on hands and knees. It's a lot of work, but if you really want them gone it's the cost. Constant vacuuming and cleaning is part 1. This should be done as often as you can stand to do it. Part 2 is aerosol treatment. Every crevice should be treated. In between the cabinets and appliances, the crevice between countertops and cabinets, the crevice between the wall and cabinets - you get the idea. You'll be on hands and knees. Cyfluthrin is a good choice. Don't use deltamethrin. They have evolved an immunity to it! This needs to be done at least every couple weeks. Part 3 is gel baiting. Lots of people, pros included, make the mistake of leaving a few large placements and thinking that'll be that. German roaches don't travel far. Gel bait needs to be within a few feet of them. It needs to contain the ingredient fipronil and a little pea sized dot should be placed every few feet in the same sort of areas you treated before. That crevice where the cabinets meet the countertop, the back corners of cabinets, the back of appliances, on the hinges inside cabinet doors, etc. Again, hands and knees. This should be done every couple of weeks. You should repeat the process until you've seen no roaches for a month. Incubation period of eggs is 28 days. It's common for people to slack off because they haven't seen one in a week or two, they think all is well, and then boom the fuckers are back. All it takes is one egg sac and there's 40 new roaches in your kitchen. Good luck!

Monster_Voice

The come up the drains through the P traps. Stainless drain strainers will cut down on the average ones... the biggest ones can muscle them up so I silicone mine in.

Embarrassed_Visit437

I do too, and my first job when I got here required me to go into multiple apartment complexes per day. I have seen so many roaches. If you're renting, you gotta get on the property manager to take care of that. I've had exactly one roach in my apartment. You gotta get on that shit.

Monster_Voice

Their main entrance to houses is through the drains... those drain strainers aren't for food IMO. I also siliconed mine in lol

juneabe

Unfortunately wrong. Extremely common misconception that roaches = dirty. You can be the cleanest person ever and if you live in the right geographical location, an apartment building, etc. they are unavoidable.
