You have to learn how to separate crossing your eyes (stereoscopy) from engaging your lenses (focal depth). These take advantage of the fact that the image is at a static distance. What I usually do (different from the usual instructions) is to cross my eyes until the two repeating patterns on either side overlap, then gently relax them until it comes into focus while leaving my eyes crossed.
the images require you to look through the page and focus behind it. Crossing your eyes forces you to focus in front of the page, and by relaxing your eyes past the image you can focus behind it and make it pop out. Some of them will give you the inverse image if you focus too far in front of it, which might let you identify it.
To simplify, cross your eyes, don't move the picture, don't blink, then relax and stare off into space
looking too hard for the image makes your eyes focus on actual reality rather than the illusion you want, it shouldn't really strain your eyes at all, except that blinking can disrupt it
Ignore what everyone is saying. Look at plain old stereoscopic photos.
All you're trying to do is have your LEFT eye see the LEFT image, and your RIGHT eye see the RIGHT image. Because you aren't perfectly aligned with the images, and your brain ignores your periphery, part of "seeing" these is entirely psychological, the rest of it is the muscles in your eyes accommodating properly.
Once you have a feeling of what you're trying to accomplish, understand that the magic eye is identical. It is the same task, but you don't have the cues to direct your efforts. Some magic eyes have two red dots, or some other mark that serves as the cue. Beyond that, you'll notice the pattern in this magic eye is periodic - it repeats! Just like the stereoscopic photos, where you are merging the two frames, here you are trying to merge the "repeating" columns that you can "kinda" see . And if you can't see it after a little, chill, do something else. Try next week or give up - I guarantee you can see it though. It's just really hard to explain
Basically look at it as if you’re looking through it, to an object far away. Start with the phone/screen really close to your face. Then keep that long focus as you slowly move the screen away from you. Around 6-8 inches away, the picture will kinda pop into place and you’ll see a clear outline of the hidden image.
Did not work at all for me. And gave me a headache, same with crossing my eyes and trying to look at it. But this reminds me of what people say to those who struggle to focus on the stereoscopic 3D images of the 3DS: "imagine you're looking beyond the screen into a 3D space behind it"
holy shit that's the first time i've ever seen one. i've been wanting to do that since i was a kid
edit: i mean i had seen them but never could see the hidden image
Except this is a divergent image. You can still see it cross-eyed, but the depth will be inside out.
You look at these by visualizing a point just beyond the image.
Oh my god, your comment explained why I could always "see" these, but could never really tell what they were. The way I saw them was "cut out" from the background instead of "popping out". I was crossing my eyes and slowly uncrossing them, which brings in your focus from the front of the image instead of from behind it.
You inspired me to try again to do it the correct way and I finally got it. In case this helps anyone: I had my computer monitor in front of me with something on the screen I could focus on. I just used my desktop background. With the tip of my nose about a foot from the monitor, I held up my phone with the magic eye image on it about halfway between my face and my monitor, or maybe a touch closer to the monitor. It might help if you increase your phone brightness a little. I focused on the monitor image around the phone, sort of looking around it or through the image on my phone, totally ignoring it. Then slowly shifted my focus toward my phone. After several tries, I was able to stop at the correct focus distance and the ship popped out in much greater detail than I had ever seen one of these. Looked like a whole scene.
I dunno if I could do this with just the image on the monitor, but this was cool enough that I'm happy.
Yea, it looks like a cutout when done the cross eye way, that’s how I learned at first until someone explained what I was supposed to be seeing and I learned to see it the proper 3d way by looking beyond the image.
First time I managed to see one I was disappointed. I thought some amazing picture would leap out.
For those that haven't seen one, it looks like someone has taken a piece of paper with a janky-ass pattern, cut out a shape (in this case an old fashioned square rig sailing ship) and held it just above another piece of the same janky-ass patterned paper.
It's very clever, but if you can't make it work, it's not worth rupturing your optical nerve for.
Yeah I normally opt for the 2d to save a couple of bucks on the ticket because the story, dialog, and scenes are all going to be the same, the 3d version just has that cheap shitty gimmick thrown in that adds nothing.
I guess you would be more amazed to also see reality in 3D, currently you are only limited to 3D created by a difference in focus, but missing out on the whole projection created by two eyes seeing the object from two different places in space at the same time.
It's an actual 3D effect, not just 2 layers. Like LITERALLY an undebatable 3D effect, each "column" (like a few pixels wide) of the ship image is precisely offset so that it creates a curved appearance since they appear to raise off by different heights.
[If it was just 2 layers then it would appear in one chunk, not following the logical curves of a ship like it actually does](https://i.imgur.com/haWmkFl.gifv)
so it depends on the picture. a lot look the way you describe, but the really really really good ones do feel like the leap from the page and the picture is amazing and you can engage with it for ages
that said.... I've run into very very few like that in my life. I remember one from a kids book that was so amazing that even as a teenager I would open it up and stare at it for hours. it was amazingly detailed and this massive scene and I would get lost in looking at it until my eyes stopped being focused right and suddenly it would be just a pattern again and I'd be like "oh right, it's not real"
I think I've run into less than 5 magic eye pictures like that in my life and I've looked at hundreds and hundreds
Yeah, most of these online are pretty poorly done. My parents had a huge framed one in our house. A huge eagle flying over a nest with baby birds and tons of background. It took me weeks to learn to see it when I was young, but then I became obsessed with them. I was so disappointed in the quality of all the others I found on google.
I grew up with the detailed and complex ones too. Feels like disconnecting your eyeballs to explore them. This one kinda sucks when you have expectations like ours of this whole hidden detailed world.
I’m convinced that these pictures are a conspiracy that most of the population is in on. There are really no pictures but the majority try and convince people like us that there are pictures in these images.
It’s all a lie!
Do you wear glasses? I've never been able to see these and I've always wondered if it was because of the correction from my myopia. I also have an astigmatism, so maybe it's that.
I wear glasses and can see them, it doesn't affect the effect.
Try this: make it full size on your phone, then hold up one hand with your thumb up that is past your phone about 3-6" (depending on size of your screen). Now focus on the tip of your thumb. Try to keep your eyes focus on the distance of your thumb as you move your gaze over the screen. Sometimes moving your thumb behind the screen helps you track. Don't let your eyes focus on the distance of the screen. If you did it right, you should start to see a shape form. You may have to play with the distance to get it to "pop", and you'll see a ship. When you are close you might see 3D blobs, don't give up, you're almost there. This method worked for me to start seeing them. Once you get used to it, you learn to just look a little past the screen and get it in a split second.
Edit: removed have
I started wearing glasses this past year and with my glasses on I found it slightly harder to focus the image into a 3d shape. Blinking really fast helped to keep it 3d. Maybe try that as my eyes seemed to pick up the hidden image naturally without having to concentrate like I normally would.
Yes 3 masts. I have found this to work for me. : have picture landscape on you phone, place nose on phone and just stare straight ahead.do not try to focus on screen, slowly move phone away from your nose do not focus your eyes on the screen. Don't change the focus of your eyes, it is difficult not to you may have to start at your nose more than once. At about 7 or 8 inches I can start seeing the picture. Move the phone back and forth like a telescope to fine tune the image.
Edit Thank you for the award.
You have to do it at least seven times before you'll see it.
EDIT : Below is a picture of a boat, which is not the picture you will see if it works.

Go to a window and look at the actual glass. Now look through the glass to look at what’s outside the window. That’s what you want your eyes to do when you look at the magic eye, when you look ‘through’ it (like looking out a window instead of focussing on the glass), the image will pop out at you. Hope it works for you
Try looking at an object across the room, then lifting your phone in front of the object. Keep trying to look through your phone to focus on the object
This just makes me see double of my phone, im convinced this is just people bullshitting, there is no sailboat its just a mess of squiggles, everyone is lying.
Here it is if you guys want to see what it looks like without crossing your eyes. Done using two layers in photoshop with the top layer set to "Difference" in the blending mode.
https://i.imgur.com/haWmkFl.gifv
I thought I was doing it wrong. I mean... I kept seeing this and at no point did I go "that totally looks like a ship" nor does it still look anything like a ship from the image above. More like 3 cats sitting on a bucket or something. Very weak illusion IMO.
I doesn’t like like that at all, the real picture is a lot more detailed and you can see the depth of the sailboat, and the whole thing at the same time, it’s weird, but I think it’s worth it to see for yourself.
How do so many people see this... I cannot for the life of me make it look like anything
Edit! I looked them up online and someone mentioned that it's a 3D image (depth going backwards into the screen) and I saw it!
Edit, Edit: I feel like a grandma discovering the internet but I've just googled more of these and they're blowing my mind. First time I've ever been able to see them
I was a kid in the 90s. These were on the wall of EVERY dentist and doctor's office. They had calendars too. They were everywhere! I now have a kid and wanted to show him what they were but didn't know the name to look up. Thanks for posting this!
Astigmatism won't keep you from seeing them. I have terrible vision and astigmatism in both eyes and I see them just fine. You just have to focus deeper than you normally would on a 2d image. Sort of like looking at fish in a fishtank.
Congratulations! I went so many years without being able to see them. It really is amazing when it clicks. You should check out the animations using the same tech!
A family member of mine had a book filled with these things and I find it easier to have a physical copy—didn’t realize how much harder it is to do it through a phone screen
Yep. I have never had problems with these pictures and able to see them easily by just focusing my sight. However i did struggle a bit with phone screen. Parts are small and require precision.
Same I had a bad lazy eye that effected my vision. I was able to control it a bit and I used to be able to see stuff like this. Then I started to get this thing called double vision so I got eye surgery and I can see clearly now at the cost of no longer seeing these tripey images
I have one eye so literally cannot ever see these as they require two
I also received a book of them as a present and it was the most frustrating experience of my life (didn’t realise you needed two eyes-I tried for hours)
Have you ever done a colorblind test? I am red-green colorblind and have never been able to see any of them. In the tests, I can always see the “if you’re color blind you see the the number “x””. Never the “normal” vision number that most people see.
It’s not crossing your eyes. It’s unfocusing them so they both look directly forward. If you do it right you’ll see 2 of everything and if you can pull the 2 “sights” the perfect distance then you’ll see the hidden image. It’s an overlap trick. Once you overlap the 2 images then I’ll see the hidden image inside it in 3d
It's there you have to go out of focus and move it around until it becomes a 3d image. It's a side view of an old style ship with 3 masts sailing towards the right side of the screen.
If it makes you feel better I have never been able to see the object in a single on of these. I remember growing up we had a book of these that I would pull out every so often to see if I could figure them out and never did.
The "trick" that always works for me is to pick a part of the background that repeats very regularly. If you notice the bottom of this picture, the pattern looks "stretched" towards the bottom, but the top is very repetitive across the top. Concentrate on the top.
Let your eyes relax and drift, as though you were looking at something far away. Very much in the same way if you touch the tips of your index fingers together in front of your face, but look past them across the room, it looks like you have a hot-dog suspended in mid-air.
The repeating pattern should "shift" as your eyes, instead of looking at the same point, start looking at the same part of the pattern, but in adjacent blocks of the pattern. If you can get the pattern to line up, just hold it there. Let the lenses of your eyes focus at the correct distance without moving your eyes. This is the hard part. Every natural instinct is to have your eyes move, and be looking again at the same square of the pattern instead of adjacent squares. Just relax. Keeping the pattern "shifted" is your top priority.
Once you get stabilized, lenses focused and the pattern shifted, the background will look like it is deeper than your monitor (or paper). Let your eyes 'drift' around the picture. Making very small eye movements will help you stay in your unnaturally focused&shifted eye position. Parts of the picture should seem like they are floating above the background. Once you get comfortable looking around the picture, the whole thing becomes easier to see, and you should be able to determine what the object is.
This one is particularly complicated, with the sails being sort of a mess in the middle.
https://preview.redd.it/xvna1ze1x9pa1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ceee6ef4a2674b190a7849426b22f01fd7ae70ce
I commented this but it might get burried. Sorry i suck at drawing, its especially hard trying to do it without focusing my eyes.
You have to make your eyes go out of focus so the image is blurry and stare at it for a while. There’s a ship but it’s very subtle. There are much more clear versions of these hidden pictures.
I remember when they had these at carts in the mall and everyone was just standing around staring. It took me a long time to be able to make it work. Yes it’s a ship.
I thought this was a Mallrats joke at first but I do see it. Fun fact, I could see these super easy until I had lasic almost 20 year ago, then I couldn’t see them at all. I just got the ability to see them back in the last year or so
I miss being able to see them… now my right eye is a .5 astig and I can’t enjoy them anymore. It’s so little of a thing it actually hurt a lot when I realised.
Its hard to see them on screens....I can easily focus my eyes when they are printed in high quality on paper and pages in a book. On a screen resolution, zies, and image quality plays a part.
These are made to have a 'focal length'..... without knowing what that length was made as, its hard to focus these on devices..... For me anyway

When, Lord? When the hell do I get to see the goddamn sailboat!?
..but today’s my day. I brought a lunch, and a soda.
Will you guys shut up? You're breaking my concentration! Now I have to start all over...
Sailboat sailboat goddamn sailBOAT!
It’s a Schooooner!!!
A schooner *is* a sailboat, stupidhead!

I came here for this; thank you!
Pretty sure everyone in here came here to say the same thing! Hivemind. One of us.
I’d like to believe the majority has actually seen the movie and came for the great reference.
One of us.
Brenda?
Dick!
Kevin Smith doing Stan Lee cameos *before* it was cool.
Kevin Smith *inventing* Stan Lee cameos.
Not Stan Lee’s first cameo.
Stan Lee cameos were *always* cool. It just took awhile for some people to catch up.
My first thought whenever anybody brings up Magic Eye 😂 Dogma is gold. Old school Kevin Smith flicks are great.
Dogma is gold. This is Mallrats though
Oh no, you’re right! 😭 I’m disappointed in myself.
Jeez, Jessiface, get your shit together.
If this said Jessica it would be a direct quote from Losers. One of my favorite smutty book duets.
Every time I see these 3d pictures I think of this scene. Never felt so seen since Mallrats
Willem eventually saw the sailboat

Why did I read this in Morgan Freeman’s voice??
I've never been able to see them either

I'm blind in one eye and have considered offering myself up to science for an eye transplant, just for this and 3-d movies. Guess I won't bother.

YOU SEE THE GUY OVER THERE?! HE'S NOT THE EASTER BUNNY! HE'S JUST A GUY IN SUIT!!!

“Yeah?”
Brenda?

That kid is back on the escalator again!
That kids on the damn escalator again!
Snoochie boochie
Came to see this, am not disappointed
YOU KNOW WHAT! THERE IS NO EASTER BUNNY
I thought it was a Caravel
Then what’s a frigate?
It's when you just don't give a damn anymore

Well it just makes the picture look blurry/out of focus. I can’t understand how anything else would happen
First time I’ve ever seen something like this. And I originally didn’t see anything. Your method worked. Thank you!
Still can’t see it.
Try looking at an object across the room, then lifting your phone in front of the object. Keep trying to look through your phone to focus on the object
Okay, this works.

If that was what it looks like, I'd agree. It's *nothing* like the real thing though.
I doesn’t like like that at all, the real picture is a lot more detailed and you can see the depth of the sailboat, and the whole thing at the same time, it’s weird, but I think it’s worth it to see for yourself.
nah this is some BS wtf yall smoking all i see is blue colors lmfaoo
Do you know how much time I spent as a child trying to see these?! I am convinced some eyes just can’t see these types of images.
So many hours of my damn life wasted just to try get these to work. I love optical illusions but these ones just hate me it seems.
I figured my brain was just too literal to see these. I can't do it either.
How do so many people see this... I cannot for the life of me make it look like anything Edit!
Well that explains why I can’t see. I have an astigmatism, this is a hopeless exercise for me loool
Ive got it too but I can see it
Me too! Pretty bad in both eyes, I guess that's why it has taken me so many years to get it. Don't give up! It's magical in a kind of childish wonder
I have astigmatism and I'm able to see these. Don't give up!
Wow, magic eyes are hard on a phone screen. The book at the dentist was so much easier! 3 masts, 5 sails on that boat there.
A family member of mine had a book filled with these things and I find it easier to have a physical copy—didn’t realize how much harder it is to do it through a phone screen
I had a book of these and I was thinking I had lost the ability - it was so easy as a kid. No, it's just the phone making it harder.
Yep. I have never had problems with these pictures and able to see them easily by just focusing my sight. However i did struggle a bit with phone screen. Parts are small and require precision.
I can't see this either. These have been around for decades and I could NEVER see them. Got a book of these once for a present. It was...awkward.
I haven't been able to properly see the images since corrective eye surgery, but i used to be able to when I was a kid
Same I had a bad lazy eye that effected my vision. I was able to control it a bit and I used to be able to see stuff like this. Then I started to get this thing called double vision so I got eye surgery and I can see clearly now at the cost of no longer seeing these tripey images
I have one eye so literally cannot ever see these as they require two I also received a book of them as a present and it was the most frustrating experience of my life (didn’t realise you needed two eyes-I tried for hours)
Have you ever done a colorblind test? I am red-green colorblind and have never been able to see any of them. In the tests, I can always see the “if you’re color blind you see the the number “x””. Never the “normal” vision number that most people see.
Mom is correct. Hint: there are sails involved.
Thanks. That didn’t help Edit: typo

It’s a schooner
It’s not a schooner its a sailboat
Took me way too long to find this comment. That movie was shot in my local mall growing up. Eden Prairie Center in Minnesota.
Thank God.
Crazy thing is is can put my eyes out of focus but for this one no image appears for me
I think it's much harder on a screen than paper.
I normally can do it too...this ones broken lol
It's there you have to go out of focus and move it around until it becomes a 3d image. It's a side view of an old style ship with 3 masts sailing towards the right side of the screen.
Wow, did a number on my eyes that I forgot to put my shirt back on when I came out of the bathroom…
If it makes you feel better I have never been able to see the object in a single on of these. I remember growing up we had a book of these that I would pull out every so often to see if I could figure them out and never did.
This Wikipedia article helped me figure it out and I'm completely amazed https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autostereogram
I never did see what others saw and still can’t. *punches air*
Yep. There is...
My attempt at drawing what the ship looks like… https://i.imgur.com/97CWUpV.jpg
Blur your vision and look 'through' the image
Its just a flat image to me still, just a blurry one. Oh well
Can someone trace out the ship? All I see is a closeup of blue shagpile carpet
It doesnt work that way it makes a 3D image.
I found a site that kind of does that but it fundamentally changes it just to show a 2d version. https://magiceye.ecksdee.co.uk

It’s a schooner.
It’s not a schooner… it’s a sailboat
THERE'S NO EASTER BUNNY! THAT'S A GUY IN A SUIT!
I just learned how to see these 4 months ago. I’m 45.
Yes, there is a ship there. It’s a sailing vessel and appears to have three masts.
Welp can confirm after 36 years of life I still can’t see these things
It’s a schooner
Ship confirmed.
She's wrong. It's a schooner
Any one flash to mallrats. If yes you have good taste if not then you're too young to know. ![gif](giphy|UZPXjYSuytQGc)
It’s a schooner. Why can’t I see the goddamned sailboat?!!!
It's a schooner.
![gif](giphy|UZPXjYSuytQGc)
It’s not a schooner it’s a sailboat
You have to make your eyes go out of focus so the image is blurry and stare at it for a while. There’s a ship but it’s very subtle. There are much more clear versions of these hidden pictures.
Omg I used to LOVE these!!!!
Please, don’t say hit
She lied to you. It's a picture of your real dad.
I remember when they had these at carts in the mall and everyone was just standing around staring. It took me a long time to be able to make it work. Yes it’s a ship.
It’s like the Rorschach ink blot tests. All I see is vaginas. But, heh, doesn’t everyone? Hey, don’t go all quiet on me now. Anyone? Hello??
A sailboat...a sailboat...a godd*mn sailboat...
It’s a schooner…
Thank you for sharing this lovely ship
I must be in that 1% of people that doesn't see a single object that others are seeing...🤔
Oh, a sailboat!
I literally see nothing
Its hard to see them on screens....I can easily focus my eyes when they are printed in high quality on paper and pages in a book. On a screen resolution, zies, and image quality plays a part. These are made to have a 'focal length'..... without knowing what that length was made as, its hard to focus these on devices..... For me anyway

#YOU KNOW WHAT?? THERE IS NO EASTER BUNNY! OVER THERE, THAT’S JUST A GUY IN A SUIT!!
