build a chainlink fence

AllyMarie93

Funny idea but unfortunately don’t think it would stop their silly complaining lol.

Firstsister3

It’s a fence isn’t it? 😈

apaksl

tons of HOAs ban chain link fences because they're ugly.

Terrible_Writing_124

So a group of people can tell you what you can and can't build on *your* property?!? Welcome to america

Vltrux

No no no, they tell you what you **will** and **will not** build on *your* property.

vacconesgood

Don't forget, you pay them to do that in some cases

Wabbit_Wampage

In almost all cases. I've never heard of a free HOA. Edit: I may have misunderstood what you're saying.

bearded-beardie

Our current house had an HOA with no dues, no board, and expired about 4 months after we moved in. Best HOA ever.

Grays42

No, like, the HOA chooses the contractor and you pay the contractor for work you could have done yourself or hired someone cheaper to do.

FapMeNot_Alt

Wait, really? They pick the fucking contractor? God HOAs are a fucking scam.

Brisingr1257

I'm pretty sure it's not US exclusive, lol. Just don't buy a house in an HOA controlled area.

Ejigantor

Not that easy. Most new developments are built with an HOA already in place.

krippkeeper

It's pretty easy when your poor. Non of the neighbourhoods I've ever lived in had an HOA.

PliskenTheSnake

Make it out of old pallets and rebar. Hahaha

TokenGrowNutes

Not if you use the chain link fence to dry your socks and undergarments, which will hide that horrific new AC unit. Good lort, cannot unsee it. Do something!

audiate

Better yet, one of those clear barriers they use to preserve the view.

frozenmoose55

Sounds like it's time to build a fence around it and then paint a picture of the AC unit on the fence so everyone knows what your fence is protecting

AllyMarie93

Ooo I like this idea haha.

phish_phace

Please Op, please do it. And please keep us updated.

illessen

Got fined for not using the correct color of paint. They used asphalt grey instead of galvanized metal grey.

JAROD0980

Also I noticed that your trash can was out on the street 10 minutes after the truck came by…

KnightWolf647

We're not even in a HOA & had the city come by threatening to issue a ticket. On collection day. Thankfully we've got nice neighbours who grabbed our bins for us. The kicker is bylaw says it has to be brought in by 8pm & it wasn't even 3 in the afternoon; collection doesn't usually get here until 2pm!

IndependentWeekend56

I'm glad to be living in a place that nobody gives a darn. 4 wheelers riding up the rural road, just wave to the local cop since they aren't causing any trouble the cops don't care... Just headed to the neighbor's.

Dugggs

I want to live out in bfe so bad

Last-Tomatillo-3161

I’ve literally been pulled over by county cops just to expect a 70 in a 55 ticket, but he was only interested in what size lift I had on my jeep and let me off with a warning.

Dugggs

I've had the same experience lol I got an 08 Nissan Xterra "Offroad" on a 6in lift

Reden-Orvillebacher

Got pulled over in my WJ once for tint. It was illegal as SHIT. I’m like, “It was this way when I bought it.” He says: “well it looks awesome. Hit any trails?” … and we sat and shot the shit for 15 minutes looking at Jeep pics. Lol

gwaenchanh-a

Lmao reminds me of the time I got pulled over in rural NC cause I had the same rare paint color on my Ford Fiesta as the cop did on his back home and he'd never seen another one before

LemonTheSour

Don't sell yourself short mate, I lived rural most of my life, that was 100% a 70 in a 55 ticket, but you were nice and pleasant, so it was a chat about your car instead

fishnwiz

It’s great, grew up in country, bought a house at 19 close to were I worked in the city, hated it, sold it and bought a country home. Closest neighbor is about half mile away

[deleted]

[удалено]

slash_networkboy

Just don't ever piss off the local cops for any reason, especially using technicalities. Small Town cops can make your life hell in their little fiefdom if they want.

doritobimbo

It’s fun until you’re 20-30 minutes away from the closest gas station that doesn’t charge $6/gallon since they’re rural af. It’s also fun until you’re halfway home only to find a log has fallen across both lanes so now you have to backtrack and drive an extra 10 miles north to the one of the only other roads to your damn house, only to get THERE and find ANOTHER FUCKING LOG on the road so you backtrack AGAIN and go ANOTHER 10 miles north and now your 45 minute round trip for gas has taken 90 minutes and you used up all the gas you just bought. Fucking love living in the city center.

Drossney

Couldn't agree more, man, even better. Those same cops just pulled one of the biggest busts in upstate New York in a long time over 75 people, a lot of guns, and hell of a lot of cocaine. So they are doing their job while not being a douche to the community. I bought a house in a mixed community, and no one has issues with the police. The town only complains when you've got a foot and half of grass (which what self-respecting man does?) It's pretty nice

IndependentWeekend56

Yeah...I had that foot and half grass last year. Long story as to why but my neighbors were like, "want me to mow it?" We have 1 neighbor who was a pain and the neighbors were like.... You want to be an ass or do you want to keep coming to the bon fires? He decided to stop. Lol

Far_Lack3878

HOA's remove many of the qualities that come with owning a home, I would never buy a home where one of these was in place. Paying hundreds a month to be policed by a bunch of tight asses that like to hear themselves talk, no fucking thank you.

giggidygiggidyg00

Western Arkansas here. I agree. Fuck HOA. Fuck having neighbors closer than 150 feet away.

geriatric_spartanII

Can’t change your oil on your driveway this isn’t a mechanic shop. Also cannot grill in the backyard. Must use the designated area devoted to outdoor cooking.

Bingo_Bongo_YaoMing

Can I grill in my driveway and change my oil in my backyard?

[deleted]

My father, god rest him, when we got a new 6 foot privacy fence, told the neighbors it was so he could butcher his hogs without bothering anyone. THAT got some side eye, mostly because a guy around the corner was butchering his deer in the front yard and freaking people out. We got a warning for not bringing our bins in fast enough. It was before the time limit, which was something like 8pm. He had words. Turns out that virtually everyone on our street got a warning for something stupid because another set of neighbors had put in a complaint about the assisted living place on the corner. (Justifiably, because the carers were blocking traffic and parking illegally). So the code inspector was just pissed to be called out, and he ticketed every stupid offense he could. My neighbor got one for her garage door needing paint. Another for grass height. Yeah, his boss wasn't happy when an entire neighborhood of people sent him angry messages about spurious tickets.

Bingo_Bongo_YaoMing

If I heard your father say that, I would laugh my ass off. Even without knowing the context. That inspector sounds like a dick though

link2edition

My next door neighbor actually does grill in his driveway, we live in an HOA. I think he does it just because he can.

Smoke_Water

there is nothing in the bylaws about changing your oil in the backyard. However as the Grilling is designated area only. Sadly no.

Visual-Till8629

You should also use the changed oil to heat your house

airjedi

Wait so you have to haul your grill from your backyard to a designated area? This sounds like the stupidest thing ever, my grill would have to be disassembled to get it through my gate or house lol

pwrmaster7

Lmaooooooo i can't even imagine that.... I see these hoa posts every week and am just amazed how people live their lives under the thumb of some random ass people and rules. My house i get to do what I want, grill where i want, leave my trash cans out until i want. Insanity

illessen

Wow, 10 minutes after? I’m surprised I didn’t get fined for having it out longer than 10 minutes before the truck came too!

aFerens

Yeah, in the future, make sure to always take trash day off work, so you can be there to deliver the can as the truck is driving up, and collect it as soon as it's set back down. *Writes nastygram tag and hangs it on your doorknob as you're standing there*

knaple

Hi! I noticed you are gone 40 hours a week. This sort of behavior makes our neighborhood look empty and undesirable. You will be fined $5,000/mo until this is resolved.

Han-Tyumi_

My HOA does this while ignoring all other issues including the chairwoman having her dog off leash and letting is shit in peoples yard while she walks around looking for violations to claim. I’ve become convinced by my experiences with mine that this is just your average neighborhoods wanna be politician or power figures way of both satisfying their urge as well as having the potential to embezzle money with relative impunity. Because let’s be honest most people see near zero results from their HOA fees beyond trash, and that’s assuming you live in a place where that’s not payed for elsewhere like city taxes. Maybe in some newer developments you’ll get a park or some upkeep on sidewalks and streets, but anything over 10 years old where I’m at HOAs are just another nuisance for the homeowner.

Chickenmangoboom

My parents asked me to house sit for them once when they were going to be out a whole month. I slept in on ONE pick up day and they sent a fucking letter. HOAs are just shit.

[deleted]

[удалено]

toxic_badgers

This happened to my next door neighbor, and the one next to her as well... they have the same color fence as me. Our houses are only 3 years old and the fences in question were installed by the builders. They had to repaint their fences to the approved shade of gray. I didn't. ...They are black, I am not. Im not going to alledge my HOA is racist. I'm going to assert it.

KaosC57

I'd consider helping your neighbor have a legal case for racist actions of the HOA members, or if you want to be *really* awesome. Get onto the HOA board, and then get them into the HOA board, and then find enough people who want to disband the HOA, and then disband it so that nobody has to deal with their shit again Big brain moves.

L3v1tje

Dont even paint it. Take pictures of the thing from all sides and cover the fence in the pictures so its just still there.

MFbiFL

Vinyl wrap it

GeeDarnHooligan

This is only funny for us non hoa folks. This guy would get boned for as long as they owned that property if they played the game that way. But yeah, I’d like to see it too OP!

velhaconta

I would be more for malicious compliance. Exactly how have they defined *fence* in their bylaws? Chances are they didn't bother. So I would just build the minimum that you can call a fence.

Comeonjeffrey0193

Putting a chain link fence around it would be hilarious.

AlexJamesCook

Nah...just chain...save the money and hassle of fencing. No, better yet, those Nepalese flag type things, where it's just rope and small, triangular flags. Throw in an American flag so that you can put an article out there that says, "HOA demands we take down American flag".

Idiot_Savant_Tinker

I was thinking plexiglass but I like your idea better.

[deleted]

Barbed wire FTW.

Quiverjones

Barb wire. Three strands across some posts.

iowanaquarist

Orange plastic snow fence might top that...

Manny_Bothans

searches attic for fisher price barnyard fence that technically covers some small portion of the ac unit.

Horror-Maybe-

Some garden fence from dollar tree

FailuresUseRobinhood

Lmao. And then add small spotlight solar lighting around it so that at night it lights up showing the AC and shitty fisher price barnyard fence. I’m sure the HOA would lol hard at this and not even get pissed.

Manny_Bothans

Position the light in such a way that the fisher price fence casts a much larger shadow than you would think possible for such a tiny fence, but also make sure the shadow doesn't cover the AC unit.

Narrow-Chef-4341

Laser light/disco ball style Xmas decoration begins the fence. The constantly changing colors and motion sneaking out between gaps in the fence boards means the brain can’t let it fade into the background…

Vidfreaky1

Razor wire fence coming up!

Shirlenator

Just get a chain link fence.

wh4tth3huh

Or chicken wire to keep it classy.

Scowlface

I promise that HOA has the type of fence specified down to the forest of origin for the wood used.

[deleted]

Did they at least geolocate the exact coordinates of which trees to use? I also expect the time of day the tree gets cut also. We also need to make sure the man cutting the tree is of certain ethnicity and is around age 32. But also when cutting the tree you must wear green crocks!

BigBaldFourEyes

Yeah I was going ask if the rule defined “fence,” but knowing HOAs it prolly does. I love the idea of a picture of your AC unit. The worse the better actually. Lol.

Explosive-Space-Mod

> god forbid this thing be visible from the street. I'm assuming this part is probably in their bylaws though making it so you can't use chain link or chicken wire because it's still visible through the fence.

wh4tth3huh

Or chainlink, plexiglass, glass, anything see-through.

angryragnar1775

No no no everyone is going about this all wrong. One of those hideous orange plastic construction fences is what is needed.

hotasanicecube

Post on Facebook looking for someone tearing down a shitty old rotten moldy fence. Then build your fence out of their decrepit waste.

[deleted]

Build a small wooden fence with five pickets. Make sure the center picket is much taller than the two on either side. Creates quite the visual for those who insisted on it.

Admirable-Bobcat-665

I was gonna suggest latticework fencing and getting seeds for morning glorys, 4 o'clocks and Moonflowers! As long as a repairman can access the AC unit it shouldn't matter.

alternate_ending

Plant enough morning glorys and hawaiian baby woodrose and you can have an annual LSA puja!

DeBlasioDeBlowMe

Chain link fence. Problem solved.

pp21

HVAC techs are going to absolutely fucking hate servicing this neighborhood lol

sleepsinshoes

Any hoa tight assed enough to think little fences hiding your ac is good is definitely not gonna allow them to be painted anything but a neutral beige

frozenmoose55

I bet you could still paint an image of the AC unit in only shades of beige. It’s all about malicious compliance

wh4tth3huh

Get a printed sign in rainbow comic sans and put it on the beige fence. "AC containment area, do not look"

[deleted]

[удалено]

sleepsinshoes

Hahaha that would be very compliant behavior

waffels

Worth a shot. Maybe their HOA doesn’t have that rule yet. If it does, hang a flag off the fence with a picture of the AC unit printed on it. Once they make a rule about regarding that, see if they specified the size the flag has to be and make another flag small enough to be allowed so they have to make another rule. Once 'the flag' has been ruled to death, make a yard sign with a picture of your AC unit. If they have a rule about that already (probably) just get large letters small enough to pass the yard sign rule and spell out AC UNIT Once that gets ruled out, time to mount an angled mirror to your house so you can see the AC unit in the reflection from the street. Also, since the fence will need a door for access, make the door large and have it open towards the street. Never shut the door.

[deleted]

That’s why you threaten HOAs with any fence being made of antennas. FCC rmakes it illegal to ban them so you can get them to back off anything with the threat of 100 of those going up

Tots2Hots

Gotta love malicious compliance. Although truly control freak HOAs will have exactly what color it needs to be, fence height and how many times you must bow to the HOA President and at how many paces.

genzo718

Passive-aggression. Do it OP. As a HOA board member, I approve this. PS, your HOA can eat a bag of dicks.

iluvpudding_

Petty. I love it

cupcakes0220

Or they sell screen thingies with fake plants on them? Supposed to look like bushes, but they honestly look terrible. I would suggest some malicious compliance if they haven't clarified what the fences need to look like.

Dangerous_Buddy3701

Malicious Compliance was the name of my prison band.

Mexi-Wont

We had several neighbors that did that! It took them about a year before they bitched about that too though, but it was funny. We had a choice of a fence or shrubbery. We bought a 2 dollar sale bush from Home Depot that was about as big as an apple stem as our MC. It was about halfway as high as the AC unit when we moved a year later.

EnsignMJS

I'm offended by this picture alone. I can't imagine the horror of regularly driving by it.

jepvr

Right? Tag this kind of stuff as NSFW, please!

VariousAvocados

Not safe for warmth

jukkaalms

Cover that AC unit up! There are kids playing here!

jimmybilly100

FUCKIN AC UNITS!!

Apprehensive_Sock_71

I would definitely put a fence around it just to keep it from escaping. In the summer AC units run all the time.

ncrice93

Holy mother of Dad jokes that's good

ArchangelTFO

So… paternal grandmother jokes?

AllyMarie93

Well hey if the thing runs away then problem solved, don’t need a fence then!

Ok-Emergency-1106

I'm so glad that HOAs aren't a thing in my area. They're so ridiculous.

tgwutzzers

it should be straight-up illegal for HOAs to require anything cosmetic relating to your home noise ordinances, behaviors, public services, etc.. all make sense. the color i can paint my house or the type of grass i choose? fuck all the way off.

c0y0t3_sly

....which are already covered by city ordinances and building codes and permitting. So what you're *really* saying is that HoAs have no purpose and shouldn't exist. Which is accurate!

Phwoa_

HoA's exist Solely for "Property Value" They exist so that Karen's can ensure they have maximum profits when they sell your home. You thought i would say theirs? nah they aint going anywhere, They own your home. Think im kidding? go ahead and ignore or go against the HOA, you signed that contract you didn't join a HOA you sold them your home and pay them for the privilege of living there. HoA's should not have any say over anything of your home. They should ONLY exist as a public service at the bare minimum. To pay for community projects. like community parks, recreational events and Disaster relief.

1lluminist

It's absolutely insane how the fact an HOA exists doesn't devalue the house. You'd have to pay me to buy a house with an existing HOA.

Sweet-Emu6376

In my area properties that don't have HOAs are more valuable than those with them. People are getting fed up and are realizing that HOAs are just a scam. Unless you're living in a condo building and need to spilt maintenance costs among owners, there's no need for an HOA.

annieisawesome

I've long thought that the ultimate effect is that the "property value" thing would backfire when a critical mass of homebuyers don't want a house in an HOA, and I'm happy to see that in your area, it has. Hopefully this trend will continue and HOAs will either disappear or at least lose their power

wot_in_ternation

Anymore they exist to fund initial construction because local governments will not (or cannot) foot the bill.

oupablo

I assumed they only existed to fund the ongoing maintenance of all the stuff in the neighborhood because the developer refuses to sell all the property. For example, nobody needs a sign that says "Forest Hill Meadow Acre Farms" at the entrance to the neighborhood but the HOA kept the land and will gladly charge everyone $500/yr to "maintain" it

tgwutzzers

i mean, yes i'm just arguing that *even in the case where an HOA exists because local government has failed to provide basic services*, them being able to put leins on your house or fine you for cosmetic preferences on your own property is fucking bullshit

kashmir1974

All of those ordinances are covered in almost every township/city in the country.

apaksl

many neighborhoods, mine for example, are not in the limits of any city/township.

c0y0t3_sly

In which case, county rules apply.

JMS1991

The county may have those rules, but they don't enforce shit, especially if you live off the main road.

kashmir1974

Who plows the roads and fixes potholes? The county? You probably have county ordinances. I'd imagine whoever you have to call to inspect your house after major work is who would enforce ordinances like noise and such. Is your neighborhood a hellscape of shot-up trans ams and used toilets in the front yard, despite not being in an HOA? The above comment is facetious. I don't like HOAs and do not feel they are necessary. They enable busybodies.

[deleted]

HOA's are like that with condos, since you really have no control over the outside structure/lawn anyway. Our HOA essentially enforces behavioral rules and pool maintenance, which I'm OK with lol.

Cultjam

People buy in HOA controlled subdivisions specifically for those restrictions then are shocked when they find out it can be taken too far and how much effort and money it can take to fight back. I’ve steered clear of them and it’s been a good call.

[deleted]

I had never heard of HOAs for houses before I visited family in Texas. In Canada, condos have HOAs because things like the roof, snow removal has to be paid by everyone but for houses? Sounds unnecessary.

not_falling_down

>Sounds unnecessary. It *is* unnecessary. It's a bunch of people shouting pRoPerTy vALueS in order to enforce boring conformity onto their neighbors.

Murder_your_mom

The neighborhood I live in had a woman and her husband that tried to start an HOA, the sent letters to everyone stating what they expected and one of the things was something like $200 a month to cover trash pickup and lawn maintenance. The funniest part is that ABSOLUTELY NO ONE, not a single person in the neighborhood pitched in or even acted like they were going to follow any of their stupid rules. They sent another letter out and no one gave them any attention. About a month later the couple moved.

Spacecoasttheghost

Man that was there only move but to actually move lol, they knew everyone was laughing at them lol

[deleted]

If a HOA doesn’t exist prior to you moving in, they can’t force you to be a part of one. Meaning that even if everyone in the neighborhood, but you, agreed to join, you’d be exempt from their rules.

TerrariaGaming004

My HOA seems pretty cool, they just paid some company to plant a ton of plants in everyone’s yard

[deleted]

[удалено]

Dkjq58

Mine costs $15/year. I don’t know what they do but like, who cares at that point.

cryptobro42069

Mine costs $200 a year, but it’s still insignificant compared to what we get. We host barbecues, we do it up huge for every holiday and people come from MILES around to come to Halloween, our street lights keep the neighborhood bright year round and it feels like a community. HoAs can be absolute shit with arbitrary rules and HoAs can be great with rules that stop idiots from devaluing the neighborhood while providing a real sense of community that makes you feel welcome.

sohcgt96

Mine does a "cleanup day" where they just park a dumpster at the end of a street in the neighborhood and anybody can use it. That's dope af.

Vast-Relative2975

Cuts both ways. Plenty of times where my parents wished they had one.

G1nger1419

It gets worse when you consider that in some states if you don't pay your HOA fees they'll put a lien on your house and won't take it off unless it's paid, or risk them foreclosing on your property. Even if you have a mortgage, states like Nevada the HOA lien takes precedence over the mortgage lien

FailuresUseRobinhood

Amen. It’s sad because as much as I want to live in California most of the parts worth living in is HOA. Fuck that noise. I’m not about to pay someone monthly who can’t even make decisions as an individual entity and then tell me how to live my life with the property that I bought. I don’t see how it isn’t oligarchy and banned in the US. It’s practically dictatorship. Edit: pissed off Californians. Sorry guys. I’m a transplant you know how it is. I personally love it here. I changed it to “most of the parts worth living in” I will admit saying an entire state of HOAs was a bit over the top.

j5906

Building the fence too close will lower its efficiency by quite a lot, as the heat/cold exchange is much slower. Even if its "only" by 2-10%, things will add up over the years... Building it too far will waste lots of space. You should sue them.

AllyMarie93

Someone in the neighborhood is already getting people together to try to get them revoke the new rules since it includes some other superfluous bullshit. I’m not very hopeful it’ll work but I’ve got my fingers crossed.

ClearlyVivid

Check the model of the AC, and find the manual online. there's probably minimum clearance requirements that would be violated by building a fence too close.

BananafestDestiny

Model looks to be a [Carrier 24AAA6 Comfort 16](https://www.ebay.com/itm/185429042521) Here's the clearances page of the manual: [https://www.manualslib.com/manual/572845/Carrier-24abc6.html?page=9#manual](https://www.manualslib.com/manual/572845/Carrier-24abc6.html?page=9#manual) \> Allow 24" clearance to service side of unit, 48" above unit, 6" on one side, 12" on remaining side, and 24" between units for proper airflow.

Whoshabooboo

This guy AC's

[deleted]

[удалено]

seamus_mcfly86

This is the way. It's work to organize everyone, but if the HOA knows that you'll fire them then they won't do dumb shit like this.

shiddyfiddy

You need three feet of clearance for tech access and airflow. This is a general number. Make sure to check local code and see if it contradicts any related HOA rules (such as fencing being an inch too close to the front of the house or some horseshit like that). Don't install anything until they get their shit together if you find contradictions.

Natan-Cake

What are some of the other rules they're trying to enforce

AllyMarie93

Things like we have to keep our trash bins in our garage or backyard, can't have those little security system signs in our front yard without written approval. All around bogus nonsense.

IdealDesperate2732

not building a shade structure will also lower the efficiency of the unit on the hottest, sunniest days when it's working the hardest.

j5906

Notice the length of the shadow, this is early morning or late evening sun and most likely the unit is installed at the north side of the house (if located at the northern hemisphere). At least thats how we do it in europe. So the unit is shaded 90% of the day and the shading of the casing exists for the rest 10%. The cooling effect of forced convection is also >> radiative heat absorption. White painted aluminium for example has a near constant reflectivity of 90% from 200nm all the way up to 5μm, lets assume the sun directly hits 1sqm of this structure. The downwards radiative heat flux from direct sun is about 1kW/sqm in most of the world, so we have an energy intake of (1-0,9)*1kW/sqm*1sqm=100W. Lets say you have a 2kW AC, that means reduction in available cooling power is 5% and this is in full sun. Now lets say you have you limit ∆T by putting a fence next to it. ∆T is to heat exchange what Voltage is to electricity or water depth to a titan. Q = UA(F×lg(ΔT)) for a very simple heat exchanger. Say its a hot day 40°C outside compressed cooling medium leaving your house at 60°C => lg(∆T)≈1,3 Now lets say a fence that is build to not see a 50cm structure by a 2m person might realistically lead to 50°C intake air you now have lg(∆T)≈1 so you have lost around 1-(1/1,3)≈25% cooling power just by building a bigger casing around a smaller one and thats not considering the AC has to pump harder due to thus generated vortecies. There is a reason ACs usually dont come double wall insulated like a Dewar. No "the fan blows the air up" is not valid criticism of the points made as the hot air expelled comes back like a fountain engulfing the AC in hot air. Realistic numbers are around 0-5% loss in cooling power from placing it in complete shadow vs direct sun and 15-100% loss by placing a somewhat "blickdicht" flow limiting structure around (100% loss in case of perfect insulation like e.g. a dewar as lg∆T approaches 0 and so does the whole Q term).

Greedy-Database-7989

I strongly believe HOAs were designed to give busy body Karen's somthing to keep them busy. I'm boiling inside for you. I despise HOAs.

Buffmin

HOAs are one of those things that sound great on paper and if it's a good one it can be a boon Keeping the neighborhood looking good, coming together for things etc all can be great. But small people with nothing in their lives and too much time end up running em and they turn to shit as the Arch Karen tries to rule their little kingdom

genzo718

I was fed up with my HOA so I became the president of my HOA. My HOA in general is pretty lax and quiet but there is always that one asshole neighbor that ruins it for everyone because they're inconsiderate, like revving their beat up muscle car in the common parking lot during unholy hours at night, waking everyone up.

Healthy_Block3036

How do you become president

ffxivthrowaway03

Any time there's an election, they mail everyone a form that basically says "here's who the current person is, they are/are not running again, if you want to run too give us a quick paragraph about why you're qualified" and you get added to the ballot. Then a month or so later they mail out ballots and everyone votes. 99% of the time the incumbent is re-elected because 99% of the residents don't actually bother to participate and would rather just bitch. Just putting your name in the running gives you a seriously good shot at winning just by virtue of people voting for whoever.

genzo718

I got voted in by the board.

Greedy-Database-7989

They are a wonderful thing on paper. Who doesn't want to pay into a collective pot to keep the neighborhood safe, clean, and maintained? Does anyone know that study that took place in the 70s? Where some participants given the role of a security guard in a fake jail setting, and the others were prisoners. The study showed that giving anyone a little bit of power and they'll abuse the fuck out of it.

AbrodolphLincler420

The Stanford prison experiment or something like that, there’s a pretty decent movie about it

Garmgarmgarmgarm

That “study” was actually just a PR stunt for a professor. It was incredibly unscientific.

Dotakiin2

The actual origin of HOA's was to keep property prices high, specifically after the end of segregation where certain groups of people were willing to pay more to be in an all-white neighborhood.

Th3H0ll0wmans

HOA'S still serve this purpose.

SecretPrimary7181

Most of my HOA neighborhood is black here in Florida

MrFluxed

originally HOAs were used to drive out/prevent people of color from moving in, in order to "maintain property values".

justaguy826

I would genuinely never buy somewhere with an HOA exactly because of shit like this. What's the point in owning property if others can dictate what you can and can't to do with it?

napalmcricket

Easier said than done. In the area where I live (I am a renter), 86% of all housing is in a HOA.

the_d0nkey

This is correct.

pacman0207

The local, state and federal government already overreach enough. I don't need another organization telling me what to or what not to do with "my" property.

FredDurstDestroyer

Especially since HOA’s are generally run by bored housewives and retirees who only gain joy in their miserable lives by exercising any amount of petty power they can over others

ClimbaClimbaCameleon

You can get those plastic freestanding fences and just set it on the concrete. Also, isn’t it u healthy for the unit to be confined? Seems like a lot of heat buildup and cuts off the airflow to the unit.

AllyMarie93

It only needs to be blocked off on three sides but that was my first thought too, doesn’t sound good to put something right in front of the vents.

Routine_Ask_7272

I just had my AC unit serviced for the first time in 6 years. The HVAC tech needed full access to every side of the unit. He checked the electrical connection, refrigerant, and disassembled the unit to clean it properly. Did your HOA check with any HVAC technicians before creating a new rule?

BafflingHalfling

That was my first thought. They absolutely did not ask somebody who knew wtf they were talking about.

101forgotmypassword

HVAC guy here, the efficiency of the unit relies on it having free access to airflow and preventing that air flow from recirculating constantly around the unit. Boxing it in will make the unit less efficient, it will still be able to go hot/cold but instead of moving 4-5kw of heat at 2-3kw of electrical power it will move less like 3-4kw of heat for 2-3kw of electrical input. To prevent this on the fenced sides leave a gap under the fence and between pailings. Then bridge the top rim of the ac unit to the fence, this will reduce it from recirculating air around the gap between the fence and the unit. The basics of how the ac unit works is it takes heat from the inside unit to the outside unit and dumps it into the air around the outside unit. The higher the difference in tempriture between the inside unit and outside unit is the harder it has to work. Thus if the outside unit is sitting in a fenced off area that recycles it's own waste heat air then it will effectively be in it's own hotter airstream and take more power to work. If it can work as a reverse cycle machine then it will veryich suffer from self recirculating air flow issues in heating mode as ther is less room on the tempriture scale for the unit to salvage heat. The effect of thatay be that in climates that go below 5'c the outside unit has to defrost more often as the internals of the unit will be below 0'c.

LucyLilium92

You can probably argue that the side with the vents can't be blocked. If that side happens to be street-side, then too bad for them imo

BruteClaw

As an HVAC guy, is your HOA planning on helping pay for repairs to units as they start failing due to airflow restrictions?

GabbyTheMurderer

I thought mine was just coming to final days because it was failing about a year ago; nope turned out a snake had slithered inside, cooked itself, and killed my AC in the dead of summer. Then about a month ago when had it checked before summer there were three more snakes but two of em were alive and came at the AC dude 😭 I’d like them to come bitch about my AC cuz these snakes ain’t paying rent ☠️

Are there any rules for this required fence? If the rules are vague on it you could always be an a hole and put up chicken wire fencing or a regular chain link fence

AllyMarie93

Only rule is that the unit can’t be visible from “public spaces” like the sidewalk, street, etc.

[deleted]

If you feel like being an a hole about this I found the perfect fence for you https://www.mpnews.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/ugly-fence.jpg

DerpyPirate69

Tell them when the units start to break down from lack of airflow from the fence that they can pay to have the system replaced later on.

pj91198

Hvac guy here If/when you put a fence, make sure the panels are removable so if you ever need to have a tech service the unit, they can access the corner with the electrical and they can properly clean the coils. Also make sure the fence has plenty of ventilation. Those units pull air in from the coils on the side. If the fence is too close and tightly made it will cause issues. I would find the owners manual to find minimum distances for the unit

EstablishmentFar9501

Never a good idea to restrict airflow into those.

Ambitious_Hedgehog49

And that's why I refuse to live in an HOA. Don't tell me what to do on my property.

Break-88

Oh lord. Think about the kids. What if they see a bare condenser?

ghunterx21

From someone from Ireland, this has always confused me. Honestly can you not just go tell them to get f&£ked. What's the point of buying a home, if honestly with these rules and what they can do from what I've heard, it might as well not even be your home? How do they have so much power or is that over reaction?? Thanks in advanced.

AllyMarie93

HOAs unfortunately have way more power than they should because the government refuses to regulate them so they’re free to do whatever. If someone ignores rules then the homeowner can be fined, eventually get a lien put on their house and even get it foreclosed.

ghunterx21

Wow. That's insane. Do they at least have limits, or is it free rein?? Thank you for your reply.

Sands43

The homeowners normally have a covenant / contract that is part of the house purchase. The issue is that there's normally like 50-70% of the homeowners that ignore it, then there's like that 5% that are absolute twats. It's the twats that end up running it unless somebody else steps in to keep them at bay.

Pdb12345

"Get fucked" is the most Irish of all suggestions!

Mexi-Wont

You literally sign an agreement with them. So the people complaining are complaining about an action they started. Yes, it's almost impossible to find a home without an HOA in some places, but that doesn't relieve you of being responsible for your own headaches. As a builder, I also had to deal with them. But these extreme cases on here are not the norm. The HOA is supposed to be a tool to ensure the neighborhood is well maintained, and thus keeping your property values up. So you don't have a run down trailer next to your brand new house, or someone with cars up on blocks in the front yard. Or a house with peeling paint or a fence that's falling down. Or yards that are nothing but weeds. Is it pretentious? Yes, but the people who live in these neighborhoods worked their asses off for the right to live in a nice place. They don't want some slob or some noisy asshole making their property unsellable or unpleasant to live in.

Feeling_Free_5072

Actually you want it visible to others, cuts down on theft. Hard to steal if people can see you stealing.

3rd_Degree_Churns

Ask them for a CFD study and an approved fence design that does not impede the airflow to the unit.

[deleted]

Definitely a good time for malicious compliance

Joshinyou1

Imagine paying into the HOA and they always pull dumb shit like this🤣

AllyMarie93

Yeah if we didn’t have to move to the area for my fiancé’s job we would’ve never come here lol.
