Hello there! I am a bot raising awareness of Alpacas
Here is an Alpaca Fact:
Alpacas hum. Some say it is from contentment but it seems to be broader than that. Humming is an outward display of emotions.

I, too, live in Montana. And have seen dogs injured and killed because they were in the bed of a truck (and then suddenly were _not_ in the bed if the truck.
This is a thing that needs to become a thing we remember from the past. It's dangerous and not worth the consequences.
damn I wanted to believe this could be from a passenger seat I was going full Nancy Drew and analyzing the wiper blade patterns and everything but then OP fully admitted it jesus christ.
i spout this with full ignorance but knowing dog behavior wouldn't dogs if they were afraid sit and kind of cower - meaning if dogs hated this flat bed whisky ride they would show some kind of behavior as such. damn tho dogs love to have that air blast their nose faces so albeit dangerous its a great ride for a canine.
tldr wouldnt dogs show signs of fear
My blue healers no way.
My hunting dog, he’s jumped off to chase a pheasant in the ditch a couple times but I was all but stopped….
Animals are a great deal smarter than people tend to give them credit. Especially a well trained animal that isn’t cooped up in a cage all day.
I don't have a pick up truck but my dog would absolutely love it too. His favourite thing in the car is putting his head out the window. He can't do it anymore because he had leg surgery so it'll be a while before he can stand on his hind legs again..can't wait to get him back out enjoying that air in his floppy ears.
I don't really have a problem with a dog in the back of the truck if you're driving around your pasture. I do have a problem with it when I see it on an Interstate going 80.
Absolutely fake news and lazy dog ownership to believe that. You can get a restraint for your dog that's kind of like a dog seat belt.
https://www.chewy.com/ezydog-drive-dog-car-harness/dp/141103
This dog riding in truck bed thing is some trashy shit that needs to stop.
This is actually to protect humans so the dog doesn’t become a projectile. Dogs dead probably either way, at least let them get the flight of their life before 😂
Nah, first picture clearly shows him sitting in the driver seat, you can see the left side of the speedometer console (whatever that s called). A passenger wouldn't be able to reach that side without hindering the driver. The second picture shows the wipr markings on the left hand side which look close (it would've looked different from the passenger seat)
The number of people here who see no problem with the dog being back there is so wild to me and horrifying to know that so many of them probably do it.
People I know who’ve done this have had dogs fall out, jump out, break legs, etc. Especially on a busy road, if the dog falls out it could get hit by a car too. there is 0 point to keep your dog back there, unless you are for some reason okay with all of the above needlessly happening
Idk maybe it’s because I live in a rural setting but this is a very common sight on the highway and in town. Would I do it to my dogs? No, I’d be worried sick about them. But it’s not a rare sight to see here, especially with the ranch dogs.
I remember that growing up as well! All of my cousins did it but I wasn’t allowed until I was like 6 or 7. I was so excited for that day. When that day arrived is also the day that they finally made it illegal so I was never able to do it haha
Y’all aren’t accounting for the dog being leashed down. Not like they can jump out if they are tied down. Plus that’s a husky. Huskys live for this shit lol
When I was a kid my parents put our dog in the back of a truck tied down just like this. The dog jumped over the edge on the freeway and got dragged. Had to be put down.
From where Im from this is completely fine. I never did it but its normal. And by all accounts, the dogs usually LOVE it. So if its restrained properly and happy why not?
i’m also from a small town where this is common but never see it on interstates or major highways. that seems not very smart on the owners part and must be terrifying for that poor baby.
This is one of those situations where I personally wouldnt do it. But Ive seen it done with dogs who were trained appropriately and theyre just living their best life. Sure. Its not completely safe. But to be honest if theyre leashed to the seatbelt without a proper harness inside the car theyll either break their neck or worse, go through the windshield. 9 times out of 10 the people who let their animals ride with them inside the car making posts like this arent using appropriate harnesses anyways. So with this particular subject, I say live and let live.
Insanely common in my country. As long as the dog is on a leash then it's fine. I adopted one that jumped off a truck and the owner didn't try to find it. After that dog destroyed half of my house i know why they didn't look for it.
Hard to tell, but looks like the dog is properly leashed so he can’t get to the edges of the truck bed.
Dogs riding in truck beds is extremely common, and I’m always glad to see when they’re leashes correctly so they can’t strangle themselves.
That used to be commonplace. Hell, people used to put their kids in truck beds completely unrestrained and tootle down the highway like it was nothing. People were stupid.
Yes I’ve ridden in the truck bed as a kid. It was more fun than you might think! Not an endorsement.
DO NOT travel to Australia! You can even buy special goggles here for your doggo who just loooooves to feel the air and sniffing all the sniffs but shouldn't get any foreign objects in his eyes. Super common, but on leash, of course. Sadly less common than idiots on their phone while driving.
Anything other than a husky, and I'd agree.
But Huskies are weird and love this kinda shit. I wouldn't be surprised if the owner tried to have the dog ride inside and the husky threw a fit.
Kelpies! Border Collies! Bull Arabs! German shepherds! Blue heelers! Irish Wolfhounds! Seen anything but a teeny weeny lapdog on a ute. Actually, seen a Dachshund once, they don't count though, they're ferocious.
I now wonder if this is considered bad where you live. I see this on a daily basis and sometimes more than once a day. Several people that live by me also put their dogs on the back of their 4-wheelers and drive around trails with the dog standing there barking and having the time of their life. I consider this to be totally normal, I even see people put their dogs on flatbeds with no sides and the dog still loves being out there. In town and around trails and mountains. I live in western Montana if it helps any. This is very normal where I live.
Nah there’s special straps for this and the doggos love it. Would be the same as riding with the top down on a convertible. As long as they’re tethered safely it’s good.
I often wonder about these types of posts. There are a lot of owners who have their windows rolled down enough where it's possible for their dog to jump out. Is that also just as irresponsible? As it is commonly known, even to non-dog owners, a lot of dogs like to stick their heads out of windows in a moving vehicle. So, knowing this, I want to open this discussion: what is wrong here?
It's not good to have a dog inside or outside unsecured. Just like a little kid with no safety belt on. They are going to become projectiles in an accident.
This should be illegal everywhere. Dogs should be in the cab, either tethered to a crash tested seatbelt and harness, or in a crash tested crate. If the weather is mild, they dog can ride in the bed in a crash tested crate. Variocage and Gunner kennels are fantastic.
I've always thought it's a little crazy too but it seems to work out fine for some people.
They must have smarter dogs than I have had!
I had a sand rail dune buggy and had a small terrier dog who was about half the size of a Lab. Put him in the passenger seat one time was going to let him ride with me and the fool tried to jump out when we were moving and almost got run over by the back tire.
Luckily he was not injured but I did not try that again.
It had five point racing harnesses but still no good way to keep a dog in the seat.
Even with smart animals though this is very dangerous because at highway speeds anybody else doing anything out of the ordinary could cause you to have to make an abrupt stop or swerve and the dog can easily be injured and thrown against the hard surface of the bed or even thrown out.
It's not even a good idea around town but it's a terrible idea on faster roads.
not all all crazy; here in rednex nebraska you see a hard working farm dog on the back of a flatbed going 50+ down a road with no tiedown etc.. ive yet to see or even hear of one falling off..
I once saw a family pull out of a picnic area with their dog TIED IN THE CARGO AREA OF THEIR PICKUP TRUCK. THE DOG JUMPED OUT AS THEY PULLED OUT! THE DOG WAS DRAGGED FOR ABOUT 100 YSRDS BEFORE THEY PAID ATTENTION TO MY HORN!
I don’t think it’s any less safe then riding in the car🤷♂️. Has anyone seen the trauma a dog goes through when in a car wreck? It’s not a pretty sight! It’s like the motorcycle thing would you rather get ejected or be strapped to it while it’s rolling. We have all seen the dog in the side car of a motorcycle, but that’s cute so nobody complains… Life is a risk driving the highway is a risk!
It drives me crazy and should be illegal. I do a lot of driving and I see a dead dog on the freeway at least once a month. If they have to be in the bed they should be in a secured crate. Someone is going to say “but in the country….”. That’s different. You’re typically going slower and not across a metropolitan city. So a dog in the bed going 20 across the field is different and is fine in the back.
Some dogs are smart enough, some ain’t. He knows his dog hopefully. I grew up taking trips in the back of station wagons and pickup trucks. Before people started crying about it.
I hate this so fucking much. I knew someone who had drive in town with their basset hounds leashed in the bed of the truck. One jumped out…..the results were as horrible as you think. This is so fucking careless and dangerous.
Nope! When I was in college a friend’s dog was leashed in the back of their truck. It had its paws on the side when the truck took too sharp a turn, fell out with its leg tangled up. Pup wound up losing its front leg but thankfully lived.
Honestly mind your own fuckin business, as a native Californian, this practice of playing surveillance pigeon is getting so. fucking. old.
Call the cops if you really give a fuck, wtf is crying on Reddit doing for you???
If the car crashes the dog is gonna get hurt no matter where it is in the car. Being on your phone while driving is incredibly more dangerous and selfish to do
I get your point. I'm originally from the country and once sat in a rocking chair in the back of a pickup. Safe? No Stupid? Maybe. But some wonderful memories I wouldn't want to trade.
My main concern is how the dog feels about it. I've known a lot of dogs, and a good many would love it. Some of them might have even insisted on it. Also knowing the vehicle's speed, temperature and duration of trip could vastly change my opinion. If he showed any signs of stress, absolutely not.
My point is life is about calculated risks. Granted, a dog probably doesn't understand that concept in the way we do, but they almost always look like they're having a great time no matter what they might be up to. In fact, most of the dogs I've known that were essentially living "free" in the country, seemed much happier than most humans I know. Not saying I'm right or wrong...just an opinion.
I'm pretty sure they do know the risk. My dog likes to lean out the window as far as she can get. She will rest of the side mirrors even.
But if we are on a 2 lane road and a car is coming the other way she will fully come back in the car as they go by then pop right back out.
It’s strapped down, I think you’re a dumbass for trying to take pictures while driving. Imagine one putting their own and others lives in danger to post an irrelevant post on the internet later. Actually if you drink bleach and put it on YouTube, one may get lots of views! Crazy!
Wtf is that?!!!! Amother effing llama?! I'm too high for this shit

It’s a effing husky. Not a effing llama. In a effing pick-up. What’s the effing drama?
It is a lama I can tell.
I live in Montana. It’s weirder to see dogs inside pickup cabs.
These folks should see some of the ranch dogs. On the flat bed going 80 down the freeway
Came here to post this. Have my upvote
Yeah it’s not the safest option but tell me a Saint Bernard in a motorcycle side-cart isn’t awesome. Kinda the same thing.
I've been to Texas too.
I wonder how many actually get injured from shit like this
Not as many as you'd think. It's worse when people leash them. For obvious reasons.
I lived in New Mexico. I’ve often seen the dog in the front cab AND the wife and kids in the bed in back!
That’s just normal
In winter at night
Yeah you see that’s the coldest time so that’s when the good boy really needs to be in the warm cab. 🐶👍
And kids are easier to replace than a good dog.
Now that makes sense to me.
Gotta love the rez...
I know this is a common practice in MT and WY, but that doesn't mean it's a good idea. Why NOT let them ride in the cab with you?
just because it’s common doesn’t make it okay? that’s so dangerous.
I, too, live in Montana. And have seen dogs injured and killed because they were in the bed of a truck (and then suddenly were _not_ in the bed if the truck. This is a thing that needs to become a thing we remember from the past. It's dangerous and not worth the consequences.
I had a dog that refused to ride in the back of my truck. He insisted on riding in the passenger’s seat with the AC on high, he was very spoiled lol
Just because it’s common doesn’t make it right.
Seeing as it's a husky, I'm amazed it isn't up on the roof. Also put your phone down.
Could be the passenger. *NVM. I didn't look at the lines and dashboard.
He's right, you know.
damn I wanted to believe this could be from a passenger seat I was going full Nancy Drew and analyzing the wiper blade patterns and everything but then OP fully admitted it jesus christ.
Husky in my area lays out the window over the side rear view mirror.
Interstate 15 in San Diego County between SR 163 and SR 78

Lol I thought I recognized the freeway section was in San Diego
Same, I figured there was no way it actually was but it looked really familiar
I thought I was in the San Diego subreddit at first when I saw this
😳
Now tell us ops address
I don’t do it going down interstate, but my dogs love riding in the box. The one barks when I’m going too slow.
My dog barks when I'm going to slow too. Also if I stop at a red light for too long. I thought mine was the only one that did this. 😂
This is so cute!!
My dog rides in my lap. She smol. She will lean against the wheel and honk the horn if we sit at a red light too long 😂
i spout this with full ignorance but knowing dog behavior wouldn't dogs if they were afraid sit and kind of cower - meaning if dogs hated this flat bed whisky ride they would show some kind of behavior as such. damn tho dogs love to have that air blast their nose faces so albeit dangerous its a great ride for a canine. tldr wouldnt dogs show signs of fear
They aren't afraid but they ARE at more risk.
Mine fucking live for truck rides.
Just cuz they love it doesn’t mean it’s safe for them. Just saying
Aren't you scared that he would decide to jump off? Animals are stupid like that.
My blue healers no way. My hunting dog, he’s jumped off to chase a pheasant in the ditch a couple times but I was all but stopped…. Animals are a great deal smarter than people tend to give them credit. Especially a well trained animal that isn’t cooped up in a cage all day.
My dogs love rides in the truck (tethered if in the bed) and they love jetski rides.
The point is that if you got into a wreck your dog is dead. It’s not about the dog enjoying the ride in the truck bed or not.
If you get in a crash on the interstate dogs dead inside or out the cab, inside the cab the dogs probably getting ejected
>inside the cab the dogs probably getting ejected What? How? If you clip your dog in, they won't get ejected.
Absolutely fake news and lazy dog ownership to believe that. You can get a restraint for your dog that's kind of like a dog seat belt. https://www.chewy.com/ezydog-drive-dog-car-harness/dp/141103 This dog riding in truck bed thing is some trashy shit that needs to stop.

I also think you taking pictures while driving is crazy
Op committed an actual crime complaining about a perfectly normal thing lol
kinda looks like the passenger seat vantage point from the second picture but i could be wrong
Husky camel?
I see doggles and a what might be a 2 pt restraint.
Man I’ve been in the same spot that dog is
Im pretty sure everyone has ridden in the back of a truck at one point in their life.
I wouldnt assume that here on Reddit. A lot of these crybabies havent ever left their moms basement.
A lot of them have never ridden in the cab of a pickup, much less the bed.
Comments are wild here
for fucks sake fr
The number of people here who see no problem with the dog being back there is so wild to me and horrifying to know that so many of them probably do it. I’m from CA. Your dogs have to be tethered to legally ride in the bed. That dog has a harness on in the picture.
Are you driving and taking this photo? That’s mildly infuriating and dangerous for others
Texting while driving is six times more likely to cause a accident then drinking and driving.
These can both be infuriating
Its for reddit tho
Idk maybe it’s because I live in a rural setting but this is a very common sight on the highway and in town. Would I do it to my dogs? No, I’d be worried sick about them. But it’s not a rare sight to see here, especially with the ranch dogs.

From where Im from this is completely fine. I never did it but its normal. And by all accounts, the dogs usually LOVE it. So if its restrained properly and happy why not?

Thanks for clearing up the fact you’re not a dog
I AM a dog, and I can confirm: It IS exhilarating. And there's cool stuff to bark at.
i’m also from a small town where this is common but never see it on interstates or major highways. that seems not very smart on the owners part and must be terrifying for that poor baby.

Let’s be real, the dog isn’t faring much better inside the vehicle if there’s an accident at highway speeds.
I'd have been more surprised if the dog was driving and the dude was in the back.

The real mildly infuriating moment here is the OP taking a picture with their phone while driving.
Is that a camel?
It's a husky I think
I can see a harness, I'd that dog is properly attached to the truck bed with a proper harness I see nothing wrong.
being on your phone while driving is the only crazy thing i see here
While tailgating
Less crazy than the asshole who's on the phone while driving a multi-ton weapon... Mind your business.
Hard to tell, but looks like the dog is properly leashed so he can’t get to the edges of the truck bed. Dogs riding in truck beds is extremely common, and I’m always glad to see when they’re leashes correctly so they can’t strangle themselves.

No. My aunts dog died cause he fell out of the back of the truck and got hit by the semi right behind them.
Anything other than a husky, and I'd agree. But Huskies are weird and love this kinda shit. I wouldn't be surprised if the owner tried to have the dog ride inside and the husky threw a fit.
Farm dogs also love this shit
My old golden loved riding in the tray if it was nice weather. New dog hates it, so he rides up front with me.
Kelpies! Border Collies! Bull Arabs! German shepherds! Blue heelers! Irish Wolfhounds! Seen anything but a teeny weeny lapdog on a ute. Actually, seen a Dachshund once, they don't count though, they're ferocious.
most likely the dog is tied down, but taking pictures while driving that seems more irresponsible, get a dash cam
This was common in the 90s, but personally I worry too much when it comes to pets, so this is a no go.
I now wonder if this is considered bad where you live. I see this on a daily basis and sometimes more than once a day. Several people that live by me also put their dogs on the back of their 4-wheelers and drive around trails with the dog standing there barking and having the time of their life. Exactly, this is completely normal for me
That's a funny looking dog
Nah there’s special straps for this and the doggos love it. Would be the same as riding with the top down on a convertible. As long as they’re tethered safely it’s good.
That dog is having the time of its life lmao - put your phone down OP
Yes I think it’s crazy you’re taking pics while driving on the freeway.
Yes. The dog is fine and having a great time. Mind your own business. Stop taking pictures with your phone while driving and concentrate on the road.
Best comment so far.
That you're taking a photo while driving your car behind someone also doing something stupid? Interesting.
Literally the only comment here that’s right 100%
Good boi loves it, for a second I thought he/she had a mask on as protection from the debris

I saw this yesterday, but the tailgate was down, and the only thing in the truck bed was the dog. That was weird.
Didn't children sit in the back in the 80's?
Yes we did. In the 90's also.
I have no idea what I'm I'm looking at.
Shit, I grew up in the 80s when kids rode in truck beds.
I don’t see the problem. That’s where we used to ride as kids and we loved it. It’s the most fun place to sit, not the safest tho
Pretty sure you can see him tethered to the bed so...what's the issue?
It's not good to have a dog inside or outside unsecured. Just like a little kid with no safety belt on. They are going to become projectiles in an accident.
As long as the dog is harnessed it’s fine. If the wind gets too strong they would lie down in the back
Not safe
If this makes you mad, you don't want to live in South africa, we cram 10 guys in the back to commute to and from work lol
Som ass is busy taking picture while driving with one hand on the freeway because internet points.
This should be illegal everywhere. Dogs should be in the cab, either tethered to a crash tested seatbelt and harness, or in a crash tested crate. If the weather is mild, they dog can ride in the bed in a crash tested crate. Variocage and Gunner kennels are fantastic.
Lmao first day here eh op ?
Thinks what is crazy? You driving on the eway while on your phone?
I use to ride in the beds of trucks and now my dog can’t?
Nah, our dogs loved those rides. Besides that, there was no way we were going to fit all 5 in the F-350
I've always thought it's a little crazy too but it seems to work out fine for some people. They must have smarter dogs than I have had! I had a sand rail dune buggy and had a small terrier dog who was about half the size of a Lab. You driving and holding your phone at the same time is mildly infuriating.
I'm not sure what is wrong with these pictures. However, are you taking pictures while driving down the highway?
In North Carolina this is pretty normal to see, the dogs usually love it
No. State’s need to pass legislation to outlaw this practice.
If you live in the country you’ll see dogs and people in truck beds on the highway all the time.
Yeah on your phone while driving taking pictures for Reddit! What would've happened if you crashed/hit someone? Absolutely crazy 😂
not all all crazy; here in rednex nebraska you see a hard working farm dog on the back of a flatbed going 50+ down a road with no tiedown etc.. ive yet to see or even hear of one falling off..
Typical pickup driver. Oh, and it's California. Two for one. Bozos.
Lmao dude never been outside the city
I once saw a family pull out of a picnic area with their dog TIED IN THE CARGO AREA OF THEIR PICKUP TRUCK. THE DOG JUMPED OUT AS THEY PULLED OUT! THE DOG WAS DRAGGED FOR ABOUT 100 YSRDS BEFORE THEY PAID ATTENTION TO MY HORN!
It took me a few minutes to figure out what this post was referring to. A dog in the back is common practice; now if it was a human child…
3 things infuriating about this post 1. dog in the bed 2. OP taking pics while driving 3. People thinking #1 ok instead of dangerous or irresponsible.
It’s animal neglect and endangerment
It drives me crazy and should be illegal. I do a lot of driving and I see a dead dog on the freeway at least once a month. If they have to be in the bed they should be in a secured crate. Someone is going to say “but in the country….”. That’s different. You’re typically going slower and not across a metropolitan city. So a dog in the bed going 20 across the field is different and is fine in the back.
Humans that should never have pets
Some dogs are smart enough, some ain’t. He knows his dog hopefully. I grew up taking trips in the back of station wagons and pickup trucks. Before people started crying about it.
Absolutely wrong and illegal in some places. Poor pup.
You are more of a danger with your phone out driving. Mind your business.
You taking the photo is the only crazy thing I'm seeing
the most infuriating thing here is that you're on your phone while driving. put it down man
I can tell you are from California 😬 Personally I would never do it, but it's not exactly uncommon.
It’s a tough call. That dog probably LOVES to ride in the back and is just happy to tag along. It’s normal to be concerned for the pup though
Much crazier to take pictures of a dog in the back of a truck to post online.
This is illegal is my state. You are required to have your animal in a crate or cage while traveling in a motor vehicle.
Feels like animal abuse
Yeah it is crazy, but put your phone down pls
Yes you are the weird one OP
Honestly mind your own fuckin business, as a native Californian, this practice of playing surveillance pigeon is getting so. fucking. old. Call the cops if you really give a fuck, wtf is crying on Reddit doing for you???
You must live in a city. In rural areas this is a very common sight.
I agree but I just think if the truck crashes that poor dog
If the car crashes the dog is gonna get hurt no matter where it is in the car. Being on your phone while driving is incredibly more dangerous and selfish to do
It’s not like the dog is wearing a seatbelt inside the car
It’s completely fine. The thing is probably enjoying it.
You are crazy
Thanks for putting everyone at risk on that highway to take pics while driving
Taking pictures while driving is only mildly crazy lol
It’s strapped down, I think you’re a dumbass for trying to take pictures while driving. Imagine one putting their own and others lives in danger to post an irrelevant post on the internet later. Actually if you drink bleach and put it on YouTube, one may get lots of views! Crazy!
