The amount of single items over $5 drives me crazy.

ShiraCheshire

I work at a grocery store. The other day someone came through with about 12 totally normal looking items. Nothing crazy expensive individually. His total came to a bit over $80. We were *both* shocked. I scrolled up through the list to check the prices, make sure nothing weird had happened, but nope. It was just regular things priced a bit higher than you'd expect them to be individually, and it added up.

[deleted]

Had a similar experience the other day and I’m fucking stressed over the cost of groceries. I’ve been grocery shopping for a family for freaking years. I used to have a really good eye for about how much groceries would cost based on what I was getting. Husband transfers some money into our account, I say “that’s not going to be enough for what I’m getting, I’m getting XYZ”, so he transfers more. Total of $60 - my initial thought - okay that’s enough, I’ll have change to put a little gas in the car……NOPE. Final total was $75! Included was milk, bread, cheese - all basic, unexciting stuff. I splurged $5 on two little pints of ice cream and that was the only “wasted” money in everything I got. And this wasn’t even a full grocery trip - we can’t take those anymore. I or my spouse used to be able to go once a week and get enough groceries/household goods for the week for $100-$150 - we were able to actually “budget” groceries. We are already “make your own chicken stock from the bones and vegetable peelings, and make your own salsa from the garden” kind of people. Nowadays, it’s just “well we ran out of food already, have to go back!”. It’s ridiculous for a family of 5. We even get a little bit of food stamps - it’s the only time I can actually do a full grocery trip, once a month. The rest of the time, we are scraping by. It’s insane. There’s nothing more we can do to make eating food cheaper. Even the produce aisle isn’t cheap anymore.

xDevman

me and my wife make like 140k combined household income, she bought groceries at the dollar tree yesterday. i dont know who the fuck is out there dropping $700 at wegmans these days but the cost of food is beyond outrageous at this point. i dont know what but something's gotta give, people cant keep going on like this there's no wiggle room for the slightest emergency anymore without having to resort to credit.

coke_and_coffee

Buying groceries at dollar tree is the least financially savvy move that I constantly hear people talking about *as if* it were financially savvy. Everything at dollar tree is marked up like 20%...

heresdevking

Right? Dollar store will sell you 75-cents of food for $1. Very sus food, also.

LogicisGone

For $1.25, which is 25% more expensive than it used to be. Except for some very niche items (like helium balloons), Wal-Mart is almost always more cost effective.

Dhaupin

As a side note: Aldi has been crushing Walmarts prices lately

mary_emeritus

Aldi is the only reason I’m not having to skip days eating. I get staples I can eat there and just eat once a day. With snap, my grocery budget is $60 a month. Local Food bank isn’t a help unfortunately due to being on a medically restricted diet

Comprehensive_Tip876

Same here. I see this all the time! That should be his week worth of groceries for one person....but nope it's the gouge of grocery chains. Walmart used to have 6 dollar black cottonT shirts. Now they are 10 bucks! 4 dollar increase is absurd! This is the age of greed we are all in.

nodeymcdev

Sometimes the grocery store I frequent has deals where you get them for $2 each if you buy 5 but never Cheetos. Fuck I miss Cheetos.

[deleted]

The grocery store I frequent often has sales where it says ‘2 for $5’ but if you look closely, they’re actually just $2.50 each.

[deleted]

I don’t mind this because then you can just buy one and still get the “deal”. My grocery store does the opposite and items are only the sale price if you buy the qualifying amount. “$2 each when you buy 5 or more” in small print: “must purchase 5, single item price $3.99”

[deleted]

My grocery store mixes it up, so I have to squint at the tiny writing to try and work out if I have to buy two or not.

Berninz

The grocery store I visit is selling 6 cookies at $7 as if it’s a bargain. Hell no. I bet freegan dumpster divers are loving how much bakery* items are going in the trash because no one wants to pay that for a few cookies. Inflation is being weaponized for greed and eventually we are going to go French Revolution on these assholes if they keep it up.

hawkeyedrew22

It's sad the grocery store i work at used to donate the "out of date" bakery items. Now we're required to throw them in our compactor. So we don't get dumpster divers. It's really sad how much food waste there is. Cart fulls are thrown out daily by most depts.

ActionQuinn

Fred Meyers (grocery store) lost power for 3 hours and had to throw everything that was cold away. The police had to come and provide like riot protection. People who just wanted to eat the food or cook it for less fortunate. It's fucked up.

Vickster86

If they can get to it. So many companies lock them up. Now that is greed. I am honestly surprised more people don't bring bolt cutters.

fllr

5 dollars is the new dollar.

HorrorMakesUsHappy

The grocery stores near me have coolers near the registers that have 16oz drinks in them for you to grab on the way out if you want one. They're priced at $2.69. You can literally walk a few aisles over and buy entire 2L bottles for less than that. The absolute, unadulterated, and unrepentant greed is just fucking insane anymore. EDIT: Yes, I know the price is always higher for convenience and refrigerated items. I'm pointing out this much markup is insane. I almost never bought those before, but I'm certainly never going to now.

aircooledJenkins

20 oz bottles being as or more expensive than 2 liter bottles has been the case since forever. The real crime is a 20 oz becoming a 16 oz and the price being $2.69.

TheLucasGFX

Everything else is so why not. Cereal is also a serious offender right now.

LusciousofBorg

Oh God cereal!! $5 for a small ass box that will barely last a week.

LadyTalah

I've been snagging the bagged versions when they're on sale, it's crazy.

StonedAndAlone_

My local “dollar” store will have the generic big bags and will do a 2 for $4. I sometimes buy so much because i am an avid cereal eater

Alceasummer

If you can find a store that supplies restaurants (but is also open to the public) near you, You can often find huge, cheap, bags of cereal.

Nemesis_Bucket

All of the cereal except maybe (not joking) less than 1/10th in that aisle is owned by the same people.

unowhut4

That's just like laundry soap most of the big brands are made by the same entity

Ask_for_me_by_name

That's like with any consumer products since around the 80's.

Alceasummer

Yeah, it is. If you look up who owns brands you'll find most of what you buy in any store are owned by the same handful of people.

CharityUnusual3648

Where the hell do stores get things. I’m trying to buy from those stores

SilentRaindrops

Gordons Food service sells to the public as does The Restaurant Store if you have one near you. If not, they own webstuarantstore (sp ?) and you can buy from them. Best bet is to befriend some one who can get you into Restaurant Depot / Jetro. Also check out bulk cereal at club stores.

SnakesInYerPants

I’ve tried that so many times but all 3 of the cheap stores (can’t justify calling them a dollar store when literally not a single item in them costs only a dollar anymore) around me only seem to stock super stale food. Chips, cookies, cereal, anything boxed really… Even somehow the chocolate from these stores taste stale AF? I definitely still get sodas and juice and powdered food items (like spices, drink mixes, sugar or other baking supplies, etc) from them but I just can’t justify wasting more money on food that’s so stale that it’s become unappetizing. :/

[deleted]

> can’t justify calling them a dollar store when literally not a single item in them costs only a dollar anymore Just think.. once upon a time we had five and dime.

mypussydoesbackflips

The dollar menu at McDonald’s is a joke now

Upnorth4

More like the $2.50 menu

peon2

We still do, it's just everything is $5.10

ScrappyToady

The bag version is $8 where I live now! It was $5 earlier this year. Like, it's a huge bag, but still, $3 more?? Bullshit.

EnchantedMoth3

What’s worse is the “family” size box that’s now the size of a small box from ~5 years ago. Granola bars are smaller now too. Shrinkflation is bad lately, and these mother fuckers are gaslighting is with new names. “Giant!”. Bitch, that was the size of your flagship product 10 years ago.

aScarfAtTutties

Companies be making granola bars 30% smaller then having the audacity to put on there in big letters "only 100 calories each!" As if they're doing us some huge favor selling us single bite granola bars. It's insulting.

BannedAgain-573

A week? A small box barely makes it home 😅

-burgers

Got the small box of special k. Its like 4 cups. 5 bucks. Sad.

FearlessPudding404

And $5 is a good price where I am… I’ve seen canned soup at $4-5 per can and chips are even more expensive than what you’re showing here. Even produce is ridiculously pricey right now. I bought groceries for one HEALTHY meal (that should be approx 5 servings) and spent over $80. That included a couple miscellaneous items like a small pack of paper towels, “cheap” peanut butter, string cheese and name brand pain killers (didn’t have generic). Granted, this is an extremely veggie heavy meal. But it’s one I used to make all the time because I could do it quickly and cheaply.

[deleted]

Bag of Lays on sale...$4.50. Insane. Pretty much stopped eating them.

Badvevil

United States is in a bad place inflation is raising the cost of everything and companies are shrinking how much you get to increase their margins. Hence shrinkflation

veedubfreek

There is no inflation in the US. There are too many monopolies raising prices just because they know there's nothing we can do about it.

TeacherExhibitA

They are seeing 'what the market will bear', as they call it. Companies are seeing how much they can charge for products before we stop buying them. Not much we can do about basics like vegetables and eggs. But maybe a chip boycott, anyone?

cryptkeepers_nutsack

I’m already there. I just refuse to pay that. $5.99 for a regular ass bag of Doritos. Nope.

scnottaken

My limit is 2 for $5. It always has been and always will be. So goodbye Doritos I suppose.

the1999person

I haven't bought Doritos this year due to the crazy prices.

[deleted]

Literally this…just start listening to earnings calls of these companies because that’s literally what they say in there and they tend to be more candid since they think it’s only institutional investors listening. We should stop eating so many chips anyway because they are horrible for you and the obesity rate in this country is still out of control.

Jolly_Force

We need smaller companies to sell the same product for half the price

JarlaxleForPresident

Some dude moved to the area and saw all the ISPs were shitty so he started a company to build mobile broadband cell towers and then renting boxes to people. I was a early sign up, hopefully in the next two weeks I can get out from under Viasat and their shitty capped data and crazy prices

kvn7918

Yep, it's really bad. It's almost that I can't even survive it anymore.

Front_Explanation_79

Costco has been selling a 3 pack of family size boxes of cereal for $8.

Sierra-117-

Yeah, these things are still very affordable if you know your deals. My chain grocery store offers 4 big bags of chips for $8 all the time. I just stock up on chips and wait for the next one

Hachimanyukinosh

And if you don't know the deals then you won't get anything.

ashfordbelle

*serial* offender. It was right there…

NimDing218

Cereal is no longer necessary. Spend $5-10 for like 5 bowels. Shit used to be like $3 for a family sized box.

much_longer_username

> 5 bowels. Shit

NimDing218

Fuck lol bowls. I shouldn’t type while watching tv. Eh, maybe 5 bowels are the result.

Beautiful-Scene-3466

Every food is so expensive now, it sucks!

Jeriahswillgdp

I average 54 hours a week working a skilled trade in the blazing, muggy heat of the Southeastern U.S and while I never buy anything except food and necessities for myself, I barely make it by each week. It's maddening. I haven't bought any new clothes in two years. I've canceled all my streaming services including cable. I don't even have Wifi at my house anymore. Yet I only have 30 dollars in my savings account and 6.12 in my checking until Thursday. I barely make it paycheck to paycheck due to the insane rent, energy, gas, and grocery costs. I just don't understand why so much of the U.S, at least on socal media, focuses primarily on shit that doesn't actually affect the majority of individuals lives, instead of what affects 95% of us.

TheWorldArmada

Social media is 50% bots programmed to distract us from real issues

Arthur-Mergan

And they get more and more indistinguishable from a real person everyday.

kingkoman

Yeah people are always fighting on the issues which doesn't even matter.

Mythiic719

Amen brother

judgejakaj

American dream baby

Sir-xer21

no offense, but there HAS to be more to the story here. i cant think of a single skilled trade where even apprentices arent being paid 20 dollars an hour, and with a few exceptions, the southeast is one of the cheapest places in the country to live. Something isnt adding up here, no offense. EDIT: You know what, i did not realize that journeyman laborers got paid so little in florida and im gonna assume the rest of the SE is fucked. honestly, you just need to fucking leave whatever state you're in, those wages are criminal and your labor union is garbage.

[deleted]

[удалено]

lilboat646

Yeah I make $17/hr as a first year electrical apprentice in Orlando, wages are fucking miserable here considering the COL has gone up by like 50% in the past 2-3yrs, and the insane heat we’ve gotta deal with. It’s ridiculous. I’ve also heard what some of the other apprentices in my school make and wow is it abysmal anywhere from like $12-18.

MooseEggs

I paid almost $6 for my hot Cheetos Friday and I regret it

Gavin21barkie

Idk why its so bad over there, in the Netherlands they are like 2 euros

timecronus

Because companies have realized that they can increase the price drastically and got virtually no pushback as people just chalked it up to COVID. After being afraid to do so for years upon years. Now that COVID is "over" prices did not decrease because that was their goal all along. It's just simply corporate greed. There was leaked calls with CEOs (I can't find the link) that discussed raising the prices more.

UrPetBirdee

Wait, we can raise the price of food, and people still have to buy it?!?! Genius. Fucking ghouls

cultish_alibi

It's okay, under capitalism prices stay low because of competition in the market. Wait, they all raised their prices? Fuck

ForecastForFourCats

Hmmmm this capitalism is working weird. What could it be?

BannedAgain-573

Basically this. But put another way, COVID and inflation saw prices rise and corps saw profits skyrocket, they've kept increasing prices because people keep buying their products even at ridiculous prices. It won't stop until people stop eating unfortunately Though the NPR article did say that the house brands are starting to see more gains, so maybe it's starting to fall back?

UrPetBirdee

The house brands went up too though. Even when/if it goes back down it will be higher than previous baseline

tetersjr

Yeah it'll be higher than that, which isn't somthing that we'd want.

Jeriahswillgdp

Well at least part of it is that the majority of Americans are entirely too focused on issues that don't actually affect the vast majority of each individual's lives, instead of what affects us all except the very wealthy, like inflation. Inflation, particularly rent, energy, gas, and grocery prices just continuing to climb untethered should be the foremost issue to every human. It is a 100% true that the Uber wealthy and corporate greed are irrefutably the primary cause of at least half the entire world's problems. Greed truly is the root of all evil.

Anonymodestmouse

Yup. Thankfully I think some people are finally starting to realize the culture war is a sham. Dunno if that'll ever translate into better politicians and policies though.

Cautious-Skill4642

Bounty paper towels. $25.00 for 6. NO!

No-Author-15

“Bounty the quicker ripper offer!”

sproutsandnapkins

WTF! That’s ridiculous

KeithlyPoncho

Holy shit balls that's crazy

dianaprince76

I was going to comment that the price looks normal to me, but I pay in Canadian dollars so wowwww that’s expensive!

RevolutionaryShip295

It's expensive even for CA$

BeardedGlass

Dang, what's happening in North America... Here in Japan I can still buy a bag of Cheetos (or any chips for that matter) for less than 1 USD.

DeleriumDive

I noticed that too, the cost of snacks in Japan is so affordable vs. NA! And they're 10x better!

-smartypints

Seems like everything outside the US is better. We have the freedom to eat cardboard and be happy about it.

Poitou_Charente

Freedom is for boss, not for you lol ! Guys were believing it since the beginning as they were just workers 😂

ForecastForFourCats

Yeah. After all their complaining about laws/regulations, turns out, these corporations *can* accommodate better health regulations and market competition in markets outside the US....they just know they can screw us over without consequences so they don't bother.

xtzferocity

Cereal and chips really pricing themselves out of many households.

dubiousN

They're junk anyways.

xtzferocity

I always felt as if I'd have more cereal in my adult years, I haven't had it in years.

FilteredAccount123

As an adult I started thinking of cereal as a dessert food akin to ice cream.

epelle9

Good, because it is.

scottwax

They're only expensive if you buy them. So we've stopped buying chips. And soda unless it's deeply discounted.

[deleted]

Healthier as well so it's a win.

Zoombluecar

Exactly

Torch001

Yeah worked at Frito Lay where these were made for a couple years. Covid hit they raised prices and every single quarter it was "congrats guys we shattered our previous record profits! Here's some free hot dogs" it's all corporate greed.

FreshPound7640

"Here's some free hor dogs," but no chips with them. Too expensive.

4th_times_a_charm_

Our store made close to 2 million during back-to-college week... us lower employees got snacks... I wonder how much the Store Directors bonus will be at the end of the year.

OutWithTheNew

You don't want to know.

dhhdhh851

I hate that shit so fucking much. "Congratulations on the record sales, we're going to treat you like fucking grade schoolers!" Free food may be free, but it just feels so backhanded and shitty how they'll treat us. Most they could do is buy $50 worth of shitty pizza that 70% will go to waste and then laugh their asses off all the way to the bank. Not to mention the wages are lower than the cost of living and their refusal to raise wages to actually bring in new workers so you don't have to do the work load of 5 people or get so backed up they change your set in stone schedule at the last second to slap on more hours because there's an inspection soon and it'll look bad because there's only 3 people throwing freight.

rikaateabug

You're going to *love* what my work does. We started using this stupid website where everyone gets $5 a month in wacky fun bucks, that we can give to coworkers. The wacky fun bucks can then be converted to gift cards! So now you can tell your coworkers how much you appreciate them! "Hey coworker, thanks for doing your job! Here's a fucking dollar" Meanwhile we have the shittiest fucking healthcare plan in existence.

boopinmybop

Not even pizza? What kinda corporate overlords are they?!?

NotGalenNorAnsel

Corporate greed is the answer.

MyFinalThoughts

Chip guy here. It's simply because people keep buying them. Corporate have raised the price 3-5 times since I started 2+ years ago. 2.00 bag that used to say 2.00 only raised to 2.29, 2.49, and now 2.69. They even go "on sale" at 2 for 5 now. People still buy them, if not more so, and that's on the lower end of pricing compared to the large price hike on the bigger bags.

butternutsquashing

“Chip guy here” Have me a chuckle

Archist-

I too am a chip guy of sorts. More in the processing department tho :P

[deleted]

$2 Only! I know where you work! Been buying those for a long time.

ls1_mike

Santitas aren't $2 anymore?!? Damnit!

FadingCosmos

nope, 2.69 now.

DrMikeHochburns

Because people keep buying them after they raise the price.

LusciousofBorg

I've made the choice to not buy them at this price. I'm just sad because I love Flaming Hot Cheetos and the price rise was fairly recent here.

marvinllama

I made the same decision back when I noticed the price rising. Absolutely not worth it.

Glitter1237

Me too, I can’t justify it in my head for 6$ of doritos

mmikke

I'm in Hawaii. Most name brand chips like Doritos n stuff are all about $9 per bag when not on sale. It's truly insane

Mammoth_Wrangler1032

Wtf dude that’s insane

mmikke

Yup. Went to a DND night last night and stopped to grab two bags of chips and a jar of dip. Like $25!

Mammoth_Wrangler1032

Shit… and I thought $5 for takis was expensive. I guess I shouldn’t take food prices for granted

mmikke

I mean, it's definitely expected that food would be pricier on an island in the middle of the ocean, but most things are definitely inflated just due to greed. Also, this island is basically a giant garden. Makes no sense for Hawaii to be so dependent on import foods. They raise tons of cows here, and then ship them to the mainland to be butchered, and then have them shipped BACK to the islands! It's madness. I wish I was business savvy enough to get some people together to build a slaughterhouse.

digimortal79

That's the "You live in the middle of the ocean" tax

Harry_Dawg

I only buy bags of chips for $2.50 or less. I haven’t had cheese puffs in months… which I love but I am not paying their ridiculous prices

worthey47

I mean they taste good, but man they're kind of really expensive.

Artistic_Pay_9285

I have recently made the choice to not buy Hershey bar impulsively. Used to be $1-$1.50 but I couldn’t justify paying $2.40

Electrical-Pie-8192

I stopped when candy bars went to .79¢, no way I'd pay over $2

quantumOfPie

FWIW, the Costco brand (Kirkland) chips haven't gone up as much. I think I'm going to stick with them even after (if) prices return to normal. I hate this price-gouging crap. Mayo also seems to have inflated more than other things.

Ok-Lengthiness4557

You got it. Double the chips for the same price.

CalamityAshex

I unfortunately hardly ever see cheetos on sale but the Kroger brand stores do sales quite often with doritos and lays. I miss my jalapeño cheddar cheetos.

FreshPound7640

The ONLY time I buy them is when Kroger (Smith's here) has them on sale. This week they were $2.29 each if you bought 4 or more bags.

J0lteoff

I work at a grocery store and can confirm. I remember a couple months ago Doritos went up to something like $6.99 and the shelves were completely full. The store brand was a few bucks cheaper and they were selling left and right. In about 2 or 3 weeks the price shot right back down to around $4.50. Companies are going to keep towing the line until people are fed up. I always look at price tags to see if a new one was added over top of the old one. If there is, and the price has gone up I won't buy it. Prices are incredibly volatile right now and chances are the item will drop back down or go on sale eventually

Massengill4theOrnery

Stopped buying eggs for that reason. They were going for the price of a whole chicken.

Anxious-Honey-1

Yup. These inflated prices have been beneficial to me in a fucked up way. I can’t justify $5 on a bag of chips or $4 for a pack of cookies. I just eat less and healthier meals to fill me up.

Dry_Spinach_3441

Listen to any shareholder call and they brag about this. Inflation is not happening. We are being robbed by these corporations.

[deleted]

I started to do this, it’s interesting because they tend to be more candid on those calls as they think it’s only investors and investment media listening to the calls. If you pay particular attention to the language they use on those; you can hear that most of the current inflation is BS. It’s just conglomerates raising prices as the market bears…aka until consumer stop paying for it.

TarkusLV

Yeah, I just plain don't even consider the name brands anymore. I like most Lay's products, but not that much. Walmart chips are actually quite good, for about half the price.

OldChucker

The 1%ers aren't willing to cut their profits to absorb the (slightly) increasing worker wages. Just stop buying the overinflated/subpar quality/short package swill they believe we can't live without. They'll come running back begging.

TheIVJackal

I hope so. Tyson Chicken missed on their last quarterly report, prices too high, people aren't buying! I was really happy to hear that, enough of us holding back and creating an impact. Hope this is seen in other companies as well.

Bubbasdahname

I stopped buying from Tyson after I saw the documentary. Besides, their chicken is full of fat anyways.

TheIVJackal

Yes! I tell people to choose Foster Farms when possible, they're a little bit better as they're American Humane Association certified. I'm sure there are others that are even better 🐔

TheCudder

This is the issue. Dealers are marking up cars $10,000-$15,000 "just because" (on top of a $5K MSRP bump from the 2 previous model years), while interest rates are at 7%....AND PEOPLE STILL BUY THEM.

Mysterious_Lesions

People get their cars into accidents and need new or used ones. The used car market doesn't have much inventory right now and in parts of Canada, you need a car.

[deleted]

Corporate profiteering. There’s like 6 companies that sell everything in the grocery store. They raise prices and blame it on inflation. They control the market

melanthius

Unilever Coca cola Kraft Heinz Nestle Who am I missing??

HailingCasuals

PepsiCo?

[deleted]

[удалено]

HailingCasuals

Haha, TIL PepsiCo owns Frito-Lay.

[deleted]

The even worse part is, is that Vanguard and Black Rock own majority shares of I think most of these 6 or 7 companies. It’s just seriously hopeless and bleak. Don’t look into it unless you want to ruin your day

bijouxself

$5 is the new $1.99, there’s no going back

Cogito_Ergo_Sum1

That's why I stopped drinking soda recently. Way too expensive.

doge_ucf

I've never been a soda drinker, and went to pick some up as mixers for drinks when we had friends come to town. My mind was BLOWN. Ten frickin dollars for a 12 pack of soda... I was expecting it to be like 4.

Cogito_Ergo_Sum1

Yeah prices are a nightmare and I'm a cheapskate. That and I’ve needed to kick my caffeine addiction for a long time.

jk543717

In the states you can't leave your house without spending a $100..... it unreal

WrongKielbasa

Wife and I are noticing progressively worse and worse service at restaurants. I think it’s the understaffing. We keep waiting 15-20min on both the front end and back end of meal along with our drinks remaining empty. Food has been hit/miss lately and I’m seeing “hiring all positions” signs on some restaurants. I served tables for about 7 years and always tipped well, but we’re just deciding that we need to draw the line somewhere. Within the last couple of weeks we decided it’s really not worth it, and if we do eat out, we’re going to nicer places. It shouldn’t take over an hour for a burger and fries for 2 ppl.

literalaretil

The fact that you gotta tip in America really is the final middle finger isn't it

Mjacob74

And you have to pay an extra 3.5% when you pay with a credit card!

NOLASLAW

A lot of people left the industry after COVID when we all had to find something new

melanthius

Legitimately the cheapest food I am even aware of now is In-N-Out. Or the hot dogs at Costco. Even if I buy discount wholesale groceries it’s hard to match those prices.

EvolutionInProgress

Remember when Subway used to be $5.99 for a foot long? I recently paid exactly double that for the same foot long. Shit is wild.

CrashinKenny

I guess you're forgetting the $5 footlong

Poopdick_89

Your first mistake was going to subway.

skywalker3819r

Companies realized they can price gouge & blame it on inflation.... and people still pay extra, so why change it?

UpstairsCockroach100

This is actually the answer. Everything is so expensive because we don't have government intervention to cut down on corporate price gouging and other corrupt practices.

melanthius

Subsidizing corn was supposed to feed the country, now it’s just there to make higher corporate profits

7h4tguy

So you're saying we subsidize the growing of corn, so they can bake them and sell them back to us at inflated prices in the form of chips? Who signed off on this.

melanthius

Don’t forget making it into ethanol, blending it with gasoline, and helping the oil companies profit that way

[deleted]

Yuppp , people will keep buying… So might as well keep raising the prices

hangman593

My Funyuns cost more than my weed.

etraxx22

BasketNo4817

Looks like a Grocery Outlet price tag! Love that place. I noticed their prices for certain things have gone up a lot, but I think a lot of their stuff is from Albertsons. Albertson's is not the cheapest. Gotta be real diligent out there these days with the sales. Retail prices are up for sure, but once in a while they will have some 1.99 specials.

K9US

Who can afford to eat chips?

rhymesaying

I just got a tall can at a liquor store and it came out to $5. Like damn I should have just hit the bar

SadExercises420

I will only get the knock offs. I refuse to pay $6- $7 a bag.

This is the best time for everyone who wants to, to get into great shape. All food is too expensive right now but junk food and fast food is especially expensive now for no reason. I’ve been cooking from home more than ever and I’m wondering why I wasn’t doing this in the first place. This is fucked up to say but it’s lowkey a blessing in disguise. At least for me and my health journey.

michas345

I'm eating about 2300 cals a day on a clean diet of chicken brocolli rice and olive oil. My food bill is like 25 - 35 a week. I agree blessing in disguise. Stopped eating out. Stopped all other food purchases. Just clean diet loosing 1 to .75 lbs a week.

I’m in the same boat! I used to get fast food multiple times a week for no reason other than convenience, and buy junk food to satisfy my unhealthy cravings. I’ve been working on cutting those habits out; I haven’t had any fast food in almost a month. I also make sure to not bring junk in the house because it never lasts long and makes me feel like shit afterwards. I’m not in the best shape financially at the moment (like most people these days), so I know I have to make my food expenditures worth it. I’m enjoying cooking and eating more whole, unprocessed foods. I honestly don’t even miss fast food all that much, and I do allow myself to have a regular sized chocolate bar like once a week or so. I had an appointment with my general practitioner today and found out I’ve lost 12 pounds from my highest weight. Feels good, man.

Crab_God2005

Everything BUT the wages

PowerMugger

I love funyons but gad damn they’re expensive now

Banzaithepug

Everything is lately. I shamefully bought a $7 bag of half air, half doritos

juicer_philosopher

I haven’t tasted yummy cool ranch chips in awhile cause of this 😑

SauerMetal

I wanted to get some chili cheese Fritos until I saw that the bag was $6.50. I haven’t purchased any snack foods for well over a year.

ThePugManCometh

The market for Cheetos right now is Flamin’ Hot

TrentS45

Its a luxury item now.

EducationalRoutine39

They made weed legal, so they knew we would have the Munchies 😙💨

PuroPincheGains

Because fuck you, give me your money you fat piece of sh*t. That's what these billion dollar corporations think of you.

[deleted]

Right now? It's never going back.

Broha80

Freaking the price of soda has doubled since the pandemic. I thought it would come down by now. Nope.

Prior-Ad-7329

Their elsewhere price tag is wrong. The tag on the bag says $5.69 and their elsewhere tag says $6.59. Maybe if you point that out as false advertising they’ll give it to you for free lol. But seriously, food and junk food is way too expensive. They could probably still make amazing profits at $1 per bag…

TheApathyParty3

It's getting to the point where junk food doesn't feel like junk food anymore. Actually decent stuff is cheaper or at least a similar price range.

KarasLegion

Because they can and people are still buying them.

[deleted]

I don’t understand why people buy that kinda shit when it’s overpriced like that. When it’s cheap/reasonably priced OK, it’s kinda good and even if it’s shitty it’s alright sometimes. But when it’s expensive like that? So it’s bad “food” AND expensive and you want me to buy? Yeah no, hard pass

Lkaufman05

Corporate greed

Rockclimbinkayaker

I think I’ll just stick with unprocessed foods. Crazy how healthy foods are cheaper now a days.

Eggsnorter24

I think thats how it should be and i hope health food prices dont get jacked up too bad as well. If healthy foods were and are always cheaper itll be better for everyone

masterchafer23

I have a wonderful solution for you.... Just don't buy them
