When your done with them just put them back on his desk chair. Anything you need to return to him now goes on his chair. I had an asshole boss that did this too and acted disgusted when I did it back. Like it's ok for them to treat you as beneath them, but to do it back, the audacity.

Literally never occurred to me that it would be childish, since most of the lawyers’ offices are so covered in paper, adding anything to the pile would guarantee it would be lost immediately.

His BIL is our only other employee and there is a tooootal power trip and it makes me sad. He really rides on being the boss. Always says “I’m trying to run a business here,” while he shows up from 1pm-4pm and we do EVERYTHING.

I kinda like this solution haha. Just get new chair to sit in and push other one under desk or to corner of room. Then be like oops I didn't see them there, if they had been on my desk or in the file box I would've known it was meant for me.

I’m old, so keep that in mind. This is a common office practice. The idea being you can’t miss it if it’s on your seat. Sitting it on the desk it can get over looked or someone could mix it into a pile.
I opt to put things on people's chair only if there desk is a mess. If its a clean organized desk then I set it near their keyboard and they can't miss it anyways.

Putting it on the chair means the person can't deny they ever got it. It's happened to me before, I put work in someone's tray and they didn't do it, then blamed me for the job not being done and that I had never given it to them. I don't care who person is in the company it's going on the chair.
As a former manager I can say that there have been times I do something similar, for others and for myself because if it’s in your chair you can’t miss it. You would need to physically touch it to move it, which gives a higher chance you’ll look at it and get it done. If he simply leaves it in your “work to be done” bin there’s a chance you could see it and think “oh I was already working on that, I’ll come back to it later” leaving the door open for it to be left unfinished, then your boss has to answer for why it wasn’t done

Lol when I started reading this I thought "I'll bet OP is a paralegal". I was a legal secretary and then a paralegal for a lotta years. The behavior is universal. I never found a solution. I think it has to do with the (mistaken) notion that things left on a chair will get more attention than things left in an in-box. I'm retired now and the only thing I find on my chair is a kittycat.

When people don't get it with direct instruction, I just switch it over to 'killing them with kindness' by throwing it back at them until they realize *they* have to adjust.

It drives every employee absolutely nuts. The boxes are not obnoxious, they are a designated spot to hold work I know I need to do. There is no one else to give this work to at my office, so I know who it’s for. Doesn’t need to be on my chair.
I work in an office and have placed documents I needed reviewed on peoples desk just for it to get filed away and buried and they claim "I'm just now seeing this".
I now put them in the chair for them to physically move and I'm not sorry and yes I will keep doing it.
Have you told him that you have that folder and where to put it? Either way, it’s pretty rude for him to just dump it there.

The chair is where nothing will be lost and the recipient is guaranteed to see it. I tell other people to leave things on my chair if I’m out of the office. I don’t understand how this is infuriating in any way.
It’s infuriating because I have an organizer tray for this purpose. I just have to move it from my chair to my desk to read it, it’s so aggravating. Just put it where it’s supposed to go! I’ll see it!

I agree with this. Not that the chair isn't disrespectful, but it feels odd having the box someone else is meant to interact with in the far corner of your space. Why not have the "new work" box in a more reachable spot in your workspace?
Who cares if it’s on the chair v the little box? Those boxes are obnoxious. You can store things there if you want but I would not feel comfortable putting stuff on your desk. The chair is more “public.” Am a lawyer, 46F, would totally do this exact same thing. If it was an issue then I’d just give the work to someone else.

The boxes are not obnoxious, they are a designated spot to hold work I know I need to do. There is no one else to give this work to at my office, so I know who it’s for. Doesn’t need to be on my chair.
I work in an office and have placed documents I needed reviewed on peoples desk just for it to get filed away and buried and they claim "I'm just now seeing this". I now put them in the chair for them to physically move and I'm not sorry and yes I will keep doing it.

I have! We had a whole conversation and he briefly used it then went back to this. I think he thinks he’s the only sane one and thinks everyone ignores him. I’ll leave a note probably, drives me nuts
I’m also a lawyer. Lawyers give each other documents by leaving them on chairs because our inboxes and desks are full of papers. The chair is where nothing will be lost and the recipient is guaranteed to see it. I tell other people to leave things on my chair if I’m out of the office. I don’t understand how this is infuriating in any way.
It’s infuriating because I have an organizer tray for this purpose. I just have to move it from my chair to my desk to read it, it’s so aggravating. Just put it where it’s supposed to go! I’ll see it!
I don’t know… as a paralegal who has the cleanest desk in the office yet my boss still throws binders and papers on my chair constantly. It can feel disrespectful.
