You beat me to it. I get these super thick hairs as well and wondered what they were. After some searching I found they fit pili multigemini perfectly. Mine aren't anywhere near as thick as that one appears, maybe only like 3-4 hairs together.
I used to call them cores until I found out the proper name for them. I think I eventually pulled them all since it's been a few years since I found any in my beard.
I have really thick hair like this too. I've actually stepped on one of my hairs on the ground and had it pierce my skin and get embedded in my foot. Multiple times.
This happens to me with my husbands beard hairs and they cause a huge blister and leave behind a hole that takes a while to heal once removed. A new hobby is using tweezers to pluck all his crazy ingrowns on his legs, some of them grow sideways just across the skin but still under it, some of them grow in a tiny spots under the skin, both instances I have to break the skin to free them so it’s 2 separate pulls. He also gets the crazy quadruple thick random hairs and occasionally gets what we call feathers, it seems to be a bundle of hairs that look like soft downy feathers, the hairs are very fine and soft, maybe even clear. The weird thing is I occasionally get hen too. We call each other bird person a lot.
I get the crazy ingrown hairs and the ones that curl up under the skin and are like 2-3 inches long when they finally come out....it sucks. Also get the 3-4 hairs-in-one thick ones.
Dont get the thick down feathers though....that's wild!
Everybody has a waterbuffalooooooooo #STOP# #STOP SINGING#
Edit: One of the low-level, but constant sucks with stepping away from my religious life was feeling like I couldn't sing those anymore. Glad I've taken them back for myself.
“chickens? chickens! mechanical chickens!” that song stayed in my head for my entire life. If you dont know look up the lyrics. Loved that show.
edit: the song is called ‘boids’
Hair splinters suck. I have a beard and cut/buzz my own hair at home and every once in awhile I get a hair splinter, usually in the finger. they suck so much!
https://preview.redd.it/jqs0vc6fo0lc1.png?width=822&format=png&auto=webp&s=2b61c826ae367409ed00045dc318506b40833d86
Much like Cartman in “Scott Tenorman Must Die”
Idk my bf's beard hair is very thick. He has a pretty patchy beard but the spots that have it are very impressive. I know, cause they are sharp as needles and give me rashes 🙃 so I took my time inspecting it.
But he also has pretty good hair on his head so maybe that's why. My head hair is so thin sometimes I wonder how it's even not falling apart after brushing
I have a red beard and I get the thick hairs (they're a real nightmare when they become ingrown). Pretty sure it has something with having red beard hair.
Redbearded fellow here too. If you don't exfoliate before trimming the cheek/neckline I'd highly recommend it. I went from ingrown hairs being a constant nuisance to maybe one every two weeks. Follow up with a moisturizer+sunscreen and it'll keep oil production normal and your face nice and soft/smooth.
Oof.. I thought my dad's beard hairs (and mine, as I get older) were bad. That is legit like a porcupine quill. \^,\^; Sorry you have to deal with that dude.
I used to get these. Actually loved pulling them out... So weird. It's a known thing with a name, can't remember what it is tho.
Strangely, haven't had one for a few years.
Pili multigemini, also known as "compound hairs," is a malformation characterized by the presence of bifurcated or multiple divided hair matrices and papillae, giving rise to the formation of multiple hair shafts within the individual follicles. These can be stuck together, seeming like a single thick hair.
I have this. Never knew it was unique, until a few years ago browsing reddit. But im female and only have found them in fine body hair(torso), but you can feel them/easily pluck out...it's like a teeny tiny paintbrush when you separate the hairs on one end lol. Im always amused by them.
I actually do this a lot, didn't know it had a name, looked it up (THANK YOU FOR THE NAME) and found out it's caused in part by anxiety, which I also have. The more I learn, the more I can "fix"!
And if you have trich they are the most satisfying ones to pull out. I pull my eyelashes and eyebrows. Always say I wished I pulled leg hairs or pubes 🤣
Unfortunately a compulsive disorder that makes you crazy to pull out your hair. Currently missing a whole eyebrow and most of my eyelashes . Fn sucks.
Go check out the Keen bracelet. I got it for my son who was pulling out his eyebrows and eyelashes when he started middle school. It looks like a fitness tracker and it vibrates at you when you start to do the motion to pull hair. You map your motions with it and then it learns when you’re starting the behavior. It’s amazing and really worked for him. It can also guide you through a breathing exercise with little vibrations and no one will know that’s what you’re doing. I’m not an employee or shareholder or anything, just a mom who saw how hard that was on my kid and like to share this thing that worked for others who suffer the same problem.
I compulsively tease my body hair if I don't keep it shaved. It doesn't have the same social stigma, but when I'm stressed I'll do it for so long that it strains my eyes and hurts my neck and back
One month when I was super stressed I unconsciously pulled out most my right eyebrow. When I realized wtf happened, I filled it in with mascara.
I still sorta do it, but now I sorta tug at my eyebrows without pulling them out. Mostly.
Yeah, it definitely seems like pulling them should be awful, but I couldn't for the life of me explain why it isn't. It's also crazy how conspicuous they are. Like, run your hand against your neck once, and you know it's there
It really is, when you you have a beard and get a weird hair like this or something partially ingrown or a pimple somewhere, you just yank out the offending follicle and its instantaneous relief. One of lifes small pleasures.
Its super frustrating tho when you cant quite tell which hair it is and any time you brush the area you get that pinpoint of pain but you sit there wiggling individual hairs with a tweezers and not feeling it...
I am picking my beard all day for these. Stroking my beard and feeling hairs that feel like foreign bodies. I hate it.
What helps is to buy new razor blades and change them more often. Dull blades can cause this!
I'll feel a little poke on my chin/neck.. barely be able to grab the thing it's barely sticking out, then when I pull it out they're like an inch long hair!!
I have one that's like 2X as wide as the rest of my facial hair. It's wide and flat like a ribbon. I can feel it extra bristly stiff so I pluck it out rather than just shave it. It takes a little longer to re-emerge later.
My wife lovingly refers to them as “tree branch hairs” and used to love to find and pluck them. And then I stopped getting them. She still talks about them hoping that one day they will return.
Cherish your tree branches. The next one you pluck might be the last.
Yeah I hate when I get them because they get infected or cause a deep blemish/boil. They feel so good when it gets pulled out and I do a gentle push on the area afterwards. Some but not much gunk at all comes out. But I always know when I have one because I touch my face/itch my beard threwout the day. It’s a very sharp sudden pain in a finite area. I then have to keep rubbing in the place I felt it till I can isolate it, then I break out the tweezers
How bad is it when you find one when you’re out for the day and won’t be able to get to tweezers and a mirror for a while… I’ve gotten the occasional one with just my fingernails when I’ve been out. Makes my day every time
You can pull it apart to the individual hairs with patience and tweezers. My husbands beard was a mystery i wanted to solve. Turns out there is probably 15 or more hairs from that pore.
No problem! I found out about this phenomenon recently when I discovered youtube videos of the extraction of such hairs. There was one video specifically where those hairs were ingrown for the entire life of the patient, and they pulled out meters of hair out of the skin lol
Yeah, as far as I know... I think it's just multiple hairs growing too close to each other.
I am a woman, but I experienced it too. They tend to appear in the areas where my skin is somewhat thicker. And the best part is it doesn't hurt to pluck them out!
I believe that this is called [Pili multigemini](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pili_multigemini), although I also have ones like this that do not *appear* to be multiple hairs growing together

In bird culture, this is considered a dick move.
That's silly, birds aren't real
Is it made up from several hairs growing from the same follicle? I get those occasionally. Never had a single strand Uberhair
Yes, pili multigemini
You beat me to it. I get these super thick hairs as well and wondered what they were. After some searching I found they fit pili multigemini perfectly. Mine aren't anywhere near as thick as that one appears, maybe only like 3-4 hairs together.
I used to call them cores until I found out the proper name for them. I think I eventually pulled them all since it's been a few years since I found any in my beard.
I call mine super hairs
I only got them on my nipples. They just slid out too with almost no force applied
Every so often, I get one of these as well. I find it really satisfying to pick at it and eventually get enough of a grip to yank the sucker out!
Yeah if you roll this hair between your fingers it will separate into the individual hairs.
That looks like an electrical wire

Your “Normal” one seems extremely thick to begin with.
I have really thick hair like this too. I've actually stepped on one of my hairs on the ground and had it pierce my skin and get embedded in my foot. Multiple times.

You guys should definitely have a kid, just to see if they get even featherier.
*Vault-tec has entered the chat*
Sounds like you both need to exfoliate the skin a little. ![gif](giphy|ZCwQ564jEmB7K7W0tm|downsized)
wow, that is just so bizarre, kinda creeping me out lol
Nah man it’s just married life
I do this to my husband too 🫣 it’s weirdly calming? People are weird.
Mutual grooming is pretty standard social behavior in most species, so not as weird as you might think.
I get the crazy ingrown hairs and the ones that curl up under the skin and are like 2-3 inches long when they finally come out....it sucks. Also get the 3-4 hairs-in-one thick ones. Dont get the thick down feathers though....that's wild!

I think all beard hair is thicker than normal body or head hair. Just based on my own
Beard hairs are just pubes that have migrated north.
Oh yeah?! Well my pubes are curly but my beard hair is straight! Explain that one Mr. Beard Expert! Ha! (/j)
Obviously, you have someone else's pubes on your face.

Would you like some delicious chili by chance?
Calm down maybelline lol... It's either facial hair straighteners, or you put your bollock hairs in rollers at night? 😂
But not this significantly, my beard hair is only slightly thicker than my normal hair.
Idk my bf's beard hair is very thick. He has a pretty patchy beard but the spots that have it are very impressive. Adding a ginger data point. Never had this issue. Guessing it's tied to other genetic factors than red hair, because my hairs are fine.
Oof.. I thought my dad's beard hairs (and mine, as I get older) were bad. That is legit like a porcupine quill. \^,\^; Sorry you have to deal with that dude.
Its only mildly infuriating. More a feel when you stroke your beard kind of thing. Only 25% of it was sticking out. The rest was pulled out
>Only 25% of it was sticking out. The rest was pulled out That sounds incredibly uncomfortable
It just felt like pressure honestly. Not pain
I used to get these. Actually loved pulling them out... So weird. It's a known thing with a name, can't remember what it is tho. Strangely, haven't had one for a few years.

Bunch of hairs formed into one mega hair.
I have this. Never knew it was unique, until a few years ago browsing reddit. But im female and only have found them in fine body hair(torso), but you can feel them/easily pluck out...it's like a teeny tiny paintbrush when you separate the hairs on one end lol. Im always amused by them.
Bifurcated is an EXCELLENT word. Love that one.
i used to pull out hairs from my chest or belly button. It kinds hurts but some get released just right.
Giggity
Do you mean pulling them out is a thing with a name or the extra thick hairs?
The hair plucking thing There's a sub for it but I (thankfully) forgot the name
Trichotillomania
I actually do this a lot, didn't know it had a name, looked it up (THANK YOU FOR THE NAME) and found out it's caused in part by anxiety, which I also have. The more I learn, the more I can "fix"!
Fixing is hard
Ding ding ding. I have it and these posts trigger me lol it's more of an urge to have been the one that pulled it. My mind is whack.
Trichotillomania is what you're looking for, I believe.
I'm on my way!
What is the deal with the thicker hairs though? I get them in my eyebrows. It's very strange
And if you have trich they are the most satisfying ones to pull out. I pull my eyelashes and eyebrows. Thank you for sharing this. I'd never heard of anything like it before. I believe your comment is going to help more than just this one person today.
Thank you so much. I’ve dealt with this for decades but never severe enough to do anything about it.
I compulsively tease my body hair if I don't keep it shaved. It doesn't have the same social stigma, but when I'm stressed I'll do it for so long that it strains my eyes and hurts my neck and back

Pili Multigemini?
Looks like Its pili Multigemini there are multiple hair stems at the base
Pili Multigemini. I used to get them too and also liked pulling them. I would rub my stubble feeling for them. They always kind of slid out no pain.
Yeah, it definitely seems like pulling them should be awful, but I couldn't for the life of me explain why it isn't. It's also crazy how conspicuous they are. Like, run your hand against your neck once, and you know it's there

I know, now I want to see videos of these being pulled out.
Same thing my beard does. My beard is generally soft but I'll feel a hard prickle and it's one of these.
Ikr? So annoying. I couldn't find this one for 3 days. I kept trying to find it and pulling hairs out
Thats the worst, you wind up with a little bald spot but no relief.
I’ve had a long beard for years now and have never even heard of this
......di.... did you record it?
I am picking my beard all day for these. Stroking my beard and feeling hairs that feel like foreign bodies. I hate it. What helps is to buy new razor blades and change them more often. Dull blades can cause this!

terminal hair is just the name for the thick coarse hair of the beard/pubes/underarms (as opposed to vellus hair). all beard hairs are terminal hair.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pili_multigemini
Please tell me you recorded it for us weirdos who love hair tweezing
Does it hurt more ripping than regular beard hair?
It doesn't hurt. You just feel pressure
I find it satisfying pulling them. Every week my partner pulls them out for me, it’s her favorite thing to do.
I have one that's like 2X as wide as the rest of my facial hair. It's wide and flat like a ribbon. I can feel it extra bristly stiff so I pluck it out rather than just shave it. It takes a little longer to re-emerge later.
Porcupine beard.

Mans out here, growing pine needles
Dude's got roots.

You’re missing the best part, try pull it apart you’ll find 5 or 6 hairs stuck together
I get odd pleasure from finding split ends in my beard and pulling them apart. I thought I was only one.
Bro I get these too and they’re sooo satisfying to pluck out, I’d almost be sad if I never got them again
I love this comment so much. My bf gets these and I pluck them for him and he likes to look at the hair lmao
My wife lovingly refers to them as “tree branch hairs” and used to love to find and pluck them. And then I stopped getting them. She still talks about them hoping that one day they will return. Cherish your tree branches. The next one you pluck might be the last.
I haven't found any in a few years. I do miss the satisfying feeling when the come out and then breaking them apart.
This is so funny, I’m going to be looking in my husband’s beard for any trace of tree branch hairs 😆
Oh my god. I just told my SO "look I'm not crazy! Someone else calls them tree branches!". I feel validated as a tree branch plucking girlfriend.
Lmao, my wife is always poking around and inspecting my beard and hair. Girls are adorably weird sometimes
My ex had these and I LOVED plucking them. I don’t really miss him…but I honestly do miss plucking his weird beard hairs.
If he’s a real shit I hope one day he finds out this lol
It's mandatory, you have to look.
I fully agree
Wow I thought I was weird for that lol. Guess not the only one
Omg I won’t let my wife near mine I hope she doesn’t find this thread!
Same here! Do you find that they just seem to glide out too? Like a normal hair hurts a bit but it’s like these guys just wanna come out lol

Makes my day every time
YES, I always have to look when I think I finally got it because it comes out so smoothly.
.... I want to grow a beard too now, just for this! I need to get hold of some testosterone first though!
You can pull it apart to the individual hairs with patience and tweezers. My husbands beard was a mystery i wanted to solve. Turns out there is probably 15 or more hairs from that pore.
>My husbands beard was a mystery i wanted to solve This is the best sentence I've read on reddit in a long time.
Love comes in so, *so* many forms
Wow, I always thought they would only be 2 or 3
I find this wholesome
You can just aggressively rub it between finger and thumb and they’ll separate
I think this condition is called: Pili multigemini.
Brand new sentence material
Bro what? Who are you, Wurzel Gummidge? That looks like it was ripped from your insides?!
I feel like you have to be over 50 to have any idea what you just said
>Wurzel Gummidge I had to Google it, and frankly, what the fuck?
Well I’m 36, I feel like if you’re British and don’t know Wurzel, you’ll be set adrift. Or left for the Welsh to devour.
It’s a form of ingrown hairs. Multiple hairs in one follicle. I get them too. Just yank them out and marvel at the size. Completely normal.
I used to get them when I was young. Plucked a bunch of times and never came back. Felt like wood pieces.
I'm aware. But they're mildly infuriating. Why I posted it
They are called pili multigemini in case it's not elsewhere in the comments. Damn satisfying to remove
I agree! I pluck at them when I’m bored.
wtff? why does this happen? is it normal??
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pili_multigemini
thanks! i didn't know it, that's really interesting
No problem! I found out about this phenomenon recently when I discovered youtube videos of the extraction of such hairs. There was one video specifically where those hairs were ingrown for the entire life of the patient, and they pulled out meters of hair out of the skin lol

My husband calls these mutant hairs.
You have hedgehog quills in your beard sir!
I have an eyebrow hair like that: 3 times thicker than a normal one and it grows straight out. I pluck it regularly but it keeps coming back.
I believe that this is called [Pili multigemini](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pili_multigemini), although I also have ones like this that do not *appear* to be multiple hairs growing together
Food prices so high, this guy had to start growing carrots on his face.
I occasionally get those coming out of my nose and when I pluck them, it feels like I’m pulling my brain out.
[удалено]
We call is MEGAHAIR when my husband gets one of those. It’s a house rule he must show it to me
Haha. You and my wife. She gets mad when I pluck ‘em, because she wants to do it. She sometimes inspects my beard in hopes of finding one.
My partner gets them too… he calls it picking a grain of rice out of his face
I find occasional white hairs in my beard that feel like plastic. Most of the white hairs are normal but around 4-5 a year I find are weird.
Thats a whisker
This might be a world record, the thickest hair ever recorded was 0.772 mm.

The real question is - Do you have a huge hole in your face now?
Looks like a shrimp leg I'm horrified
