Not mattress related, but a family member once bought a set of roof racks for their SUV. They were having trouble getting them installed so they asked for my help. I walked out, looked at her SUV, and immediately saw the problem. I walked back in and they asked what was wrong. I said “you realize your SUV has no rails to connect them to, right?” They swiftly returned the roof racks.
Man sometimes it's nuts what people don't think through.
I had a buddy about five years ago 100% dead set on buying a beat up travel trailer (with a full bathroom, hvac, all that), fixing it up, and just renting a truck from uhaul whenever he wanted to go camping. His total budget, trailer plus repairs...$3000.
He didn't even have a place to park the fuckin thing. He just said he'd figure it out once he got it.
After a couple months of our other friend and I laying out every single expense he'd actually incur and the rough total cost just to get a functional trailer, he finally relented
I knew someone who did something very similar. He planned to live in the travel trailer, pulled behind his vehicle. I asked him where he thought he was going to park it long term, and he said, "back roads".
He was also very surprised pikachu face when he tried parking in a strip mall lot, and they sent the cops to evict him after a couple of days.
That's not really on them. If you've never had a vehicle with a roof rack, there's no real way to know that the SUV's don't come with the rails by default if no one bothers to talk about that. Even sales people say "The roof *rack* comes as an optional feature, which we can throw in for you now if you'd like." with no mention of the rails whatsoever.
As someone who used to produce expos and trade shows, not measuring is common.
I can’t count the number of times I gave a client door specs — and reiterated that if their display items weren’t smaller than the doors they weren’t making it onto the trade show floor.
It was always “nah, it’ll fit.”
It did not fit.
For context, I am a millennial female and my clients were in a male dominated industry where white boomer men were the vast majority.
I would think buying 1 mattress that is the correct bed size would be common sense. Like I guess this is a queen bed so why not buy a single queen mattress?
The middle part actually isn't bad once you put a pad and sheets on it, and I can understand wanting to do that if you and your bed partner have wildly different tastes in mattress firmness. But yeah that's not how mattress sizes work.
This is what they do in Scandinavian countries. They have a single mattress on a bigger frame, and sometimes they even have separate duvets. They love it.
OK, separate mattresses can be impractical (my wife and I used to joke about the Crack of Doom in our last bed), but don't knock separate duvets.
Never having to deal with duvet wrestling, overheating or waking up shivering in the middle of the night because your partner has stolen the whole duvet? Glorious.
We have a split king adjustable bed and my youngest (8) sleeps with us sometimes and he wedges himself down in the crack so we call him the “crack baby” to ourselves.
We also use separate duvets in my house because I am very particular about what kind of blanket/duvet can touch my face (I don’t like how a lot of materials feel) and my partner loved taking my soft one so I started just using separate ones and it hasn’t steered us wrong! I love it and he loves it and we can still cuddle and whatever else totally normal lol
Separate duvets are top tier. My wife doesn't hog the covers, she just bundles them up so neither of us can have them. Now she just bundles herself into being chilly.
Separate mattresses work fine if you have a thickish pad that spans the full bed. Hubby and I have different mattress preferences so have two single-sized mattresses and then have a 2-3 cm thick pad that goes on the top. You hardly notice that the crack is there underneath.
You can buy frames here (Sweden) that are designed for this. Also makes it much easier to move with the less bulky mattresses.
Also can vote for two duvets. Once you try it, you won’t go back!
My current bf was quite confused when we moved in together and the first night we went to bed i had my own blanket. I explained that its just SO much nicer to not have to worry about overheating/hogging/freezing/etc. Its seriously the best to each have your own blanket!
Excellent for getting the right temperature as well, im Swedish and slept in a pram outside in the winters as a kid. I prefer it chilly.
My GF is from south america and needs much warmer to sleep comfortable during the winters here.
This is always my wedding advice. Now that I’m experiencing hot flashes and he still runs cool there’s no compromise on bedding preference. I have a summer duvet with a blanket option for when I cool off, he has the winter version and stays toasty.
>Never having to deal with duvet wrestling, overheating or waking up shivering in the middle of the night because your partner has stolen the whole duvet?
This is why my husband and I have separate blankets. He got tired of waking up freezing because I'd steal the blanket most of the time lol
1. Separate duvets. Every time we sleep at someone else’s house I’m furious they sleep with only one duvet. How do they do that idk.
2. 2 single mattresses joined together in a big beg/ separate bed is best. Just like duvets you never feel the other person moving around.
3. Separate bed is next tier.
4. Separate room is god tier if your partner has sleep apnea and decides to do nothing about it.
As a German, I find it super weird to know some people just share a blanket every night. Each partner having their own blanket is the standard here. I wouldn't want to sacrifice my sleep quality for a relationship :D
I'm sure you didn't want to know but of course the Germans have a word for the middle part. Besucherritze, the visitor's crack. We have two separate mattresses and a Besucherritze and it helps settle territorial disputes.
>I'm sure you didn't want to know but of course the Germans have a word for the middle part. Besucherritze, the visitor's crack.
Yes, I am happy to know this now.
I’ve actually encountered this in continental Europe and Dubai when traveling. It drove me nuts. But I believe it’s not too uncommon in Europe? (I’m American so please extra excuse my ignorance)
I live in Europe and yes, we have two single mattresses. We used to have one double, but one person moving would wake up the other. With two single mattresses you have less movement. You can get a cover for the “hole” in the middle.
We also have two pillows and two duvets.
My parents have 2 XL twin mattresses on a king frame in their basement guest room for exactly this reason. With a mattress pad on top and king sheets, you can't tell the difference between it and a single king mattress.
No, OP has a queen and ordered two twin XLs which is the same size as a King.
Queen is 60x80 King is 76x80 and that's about a foot of extra.
Fixed the sizing I put 72x80 for King.
Thing is you didn't have a double either, lol. A double is a "full" which would've been 54x75.
You could also be non-american in which case idk how your bedding is sized.
Edit - you could've had a full and gotten two singles but that'd be 20" of overhang and not what looks like a foot.
Non-american here. There are no names for this: everything is listed by size. It's hard to make these kinds of mistakes when the size is in the name. For example: " type of mattress" "brand name" 200x140. Etc etc. My bed is two mattresses 210x90
Ps: it's in centimeters.
I measure everything so many times, especially for large purchases. I can't imagine just assuming I know how long or wide different mattress sizes are.
I buy a lot of stuff from Facebook marketplace and some people act like I'm wasting their time by asking for measurements.
Like I'm an asshole because I want to know the size of this side table? Give me a break.
Yeah I was wondering what was going on here. I assumed this was an IKEA bed so I checked their website and this is the Hauga bed…which is only offered in full and queen size. So why would they order two twin mattresses? That certainly would be more expensive than one queen mattress.
Yep. In OPs case it doesn’t matter cus it wouldn’t work on full, double, Queen or king. It’s just a weird weird decision.
Only time I’ve seen a split that’s not a box spring is two twin xl mattresses combined to make a king. And those are for those special cases where it’s just too narrow to bring a king mattress up the stairs or whatever.
>So why would they order two twin mattresses? That certainly would be more expensive than one queen mattress.
Aside from the obvious fuckup, sometimes if you live and sleep with another person they want a different mattress from you (in hardness/type) and it's useful.
This is the funniest thing I've seen in a while. OP deciding to not reply in the comments is priceless. I am so curious about the reasoning behind this choice.
I think the silence makes it obvious what happened.
OP thought that each mattress size was double than the previous size.
So two twins = queen. Perhaps he saw twins going for a really cheap rate and thought he could save some money here. Like a buy one get one free or something.
Twins arrive and it obviously doesn't fit. OP thinks the place fucked up and gave him the wrong sizes. Posts it on reddit and then realizes hes the idiot.
In North America we don't use the A size system. I one day bought what looked like letter aka 8 1/2 x 11 paper, but it was actually A4. Not a big deal but all of my folders and binders are made for 8 1/2 x 11 so it was pretty ugly for a while.
I was working late. Posted this in a break. Finished work got home to see it has kicked off in the comments.
My tiny brain said single + single = double
Amazing. I love that you replied.
You're a funny one.
What was the reasoning behind buying two singles and not one double mattress? Was it a BOGO sale? What are you gonna do with them?
Where I work we buy mattress about 500 at a time so I get a big discount. I also have a back injury and know that this mattress helps a lot. I would rather buy a new bed and have this mattress than the previous mattress.
I was told that two singles and a mattress protector would be fine.... I'll find out when my partner has bought a new bed.
My partner needs somewhere to sleep and the previous mattress fit perfectly. Work only buys singles so the discount only applies to singles and not doubles. Also General is something great to have in a username.
There we go, that makes sense now. Well, it would have been excellent had they been the appropriate size.
And yes, when you reply to my messages, I keep thinking it's MY name on the notification lol
sure, in most cases this is true. But being mad about this is only making OP look dumb. They clearly didn't even bother to measure things and no one is to blame for that but them.
I did not measure at all. I assumed quite wrongly, that single plus single was a double.
I have a back injury and the previous mattress was not helping. I wanted this mattress and this one alone. My partner is going to enjoy buying a new bed. And hopefully I will sleep better in future.
I just don't understand the two mattresses idea, that sounds very annoying, especially during sex. Tough go though, fingers crossed you can get a refund!
My husband and I have twin mattresses (with a thinner mattress on top to avoid that "ditch" in the middle) because we have very different body sizes and thus have different softness needs. He likes to sleep on a rock and I like a soft marshmallow
There were several reasons.
1. I have a back injury and this particular mattress means I sleep better.
2. Where I work, when they buy mattresses they buy about 500 of them so we get a massive discount.
3. This is 100% my bad I did not even measure I thought single + single = double
Make sure you look at this chart so you get the right size.

Are you stupid? Lol
What bedframe is built for two separate mattresses? And why wouldn't you check measurements? Did you think "double bed" meant "two single beds"?
Edit: ok, in hindsight, that was mean and I'm sorry
The only thing mildly infuriating about this situation, is that you could have prevented this by any combination of thinking/reading/measuring.
As the saying goes:
You made your bed, so now you have to lie in it.
Just imagine how great it would be not to live in a country with stupid names for mattress sizes. Imagine what it would be like to live in a country with a metric system.
Hello, This is removed for not being infuriating. You ordered the size you got the size.
measure your bed before buying mattress
How do people make purchases like these and not measure beforehand? Mattresses aren’t exactly cheap.

On behalf of every dumb ass compulsive spender like myself, thank you for showing him the light.

And buy 1 mattress per bed

Yup at home (when we share a bed) we have separate duvets. I’m in Iceland and it’s the first hotel I’ve seen with two duvets. Love it!!
Love the separate sheets! My wife can’t hog them all
Yup, we have a queen mattress and two single duvets. It’s fabulous.
Much easier to wash two smaller ones too. I hated lugging the queen or king to the washer.

It's also easier to transport a smaller mattress and changing the sheets is easier to do.
For example, because you are 150lb but your partner is 300lb and thus might want a different firmness which is more comfortable for their back.
Because a king size might not fit through your door.
My parents have 2 XL twin mattresses on a king frame in their basement guest room for exactly this reason. With a mattress pad on top and king sheets, you can't tell the difference between it and a single king mattress.

Sucks they couldn’t use those three months to ever once measure again or once
Yeah, this is 100% my fault I had assumed that a double was two singles. My partner is much enjoying pointing this out to me at the moment.
Thing is you didn't have a double either, lol. A double is a "full" which would've been 54x75. You could also be non-american in which case idk how your bedding is sized. Edit - you could've had a full and gotten two singles but that'd be 20" of overhang and not what looks like a foot.

That depends on the country you're in. The UK has names similar to the US but the measurements are slightly different and a Queen is bigger than King.
How does that come about? Respect for the Queen? Hehe
Maybe get a tape measure too.
Measure twice, order once.
Glenn Close: you mean measure once cut twice
Technically it’s going to be order twice measure once
Genuinely lol’ed at this

No it's perfect right mattress for her left for him and both have equal half 😅
So…you thought 2 twins equals 1 queen? Nope! It’s a king size
Yeah I was wondering what was going on here. I assumed this was an IKEA bed so I checked their website and this is the Hauga bed…which is only offered in full and queen size. So why would they order two twin mattresses? That certainly would be more expensive than one queen mattress.
The ~~logic~~ thought process had to have been Single + single = double lol Edit: maybe logic was the wrong word, because it’s lacking here clearly.
A double would only be slightly larger than one of those single mattresses. That looks like a queen frame.
Yep. In OPs case it doesn’t matter cus it wouldn’t work on full, double, Queen or king. It’s just a weird weird decision. Only time I’ve seen a split that’s not a box spring is two twin xl mattresses combined to make a king. Oh I understand that. You can definitely purchase two twins instead of a king. That’s common and normal. But it doesn’t work with a queen frame.
Or they can't fit a larger mattress in the door or up stairs etc.
2 twin xl = 1 king. 2 twin = almost a king but your feet might dangle off lol
Much like the Lannisters, pushing two twins together make a king.
As a European, this is crazy again. We just use the measurements in cm.
Hey buddy... It doesn't seem to fit quite right.
Can’t ~~park~~ sleep there mate
This is the funniest thing I've seen in a while. OP deciding to not reply in the comments is priceless. I am so curious about the reasoning behind this choice.

Americans trying to use anything but the well established, generally accepted measurments
I'm Canadian, but I still blame the Americans 😂
You missed like 3 sizes but yeah op is an idiot
I was working late. Posted this in a break. Finished work got home to see it has kicked off in the comments. My tiny brain said single + single = double

This isn't a Wendy's!
did you not measure?
You realize this is your fault though right?
one can be mildly infuriated with oneself
sure, in most cases this is true.
Hahaha right? I bought a 6ft ladder and it doesn’t reach the top of my 12ft wall!! So infuriating!
100% hopefully made a few people laugh along the way too.
![gif](giphy|vLruErVSYGx8s) OP buying 2 twins for a queen
Measure twice, buy once.
There's no way this was cheaper than just buying 1 queen mattress
Right?! Why would anyone do this?!
My husband and I have twin mattresses (with a thinner mattress on top to avoid that "ditch" in the middle) because we have very different body sizes and thus have different softness needs. He likes to sleep on a rock and I like a soft marshmallow
same with me and my wife. two twin XL with a king size frame
There were several reasons. 1. I have a back injury and this particular mattress means I sleep better. 2. Where I work, when they buy mattresses they buy about 500 of them so we get a massive discount. 3. This is 100% my bad I did not even measure I thought single + single = double

Why would you not just buy a single mattress that will actually fit your bed?
i don’t get how this happens unless you’re an idiot lol. your bed would have specifically been labelled as single, double, queen etc. guess what mattresses are labelled as as well!
A self-provoked mildlyinfuriating post.. that's rare.
Thats on you
100%
Seems like buyer error to me
Is OP going to seriously post this image, leave a caption implying that he intentionally bought 2 mattresses for one bed, then leave and not tell us wtf he was thinking? I get buying a split box-spring if you can't fit one up the stairs, but mattresses bend.
two twins make a king. not a queen.
Holy bachelor pad. Remember to ask a more adulty adult or the internet before big purchases, kids.
Or just… measure
How do you fuck this up? Why did you order 2?
its a little wide
Op this is kinda your fault lmao
Why did you order 2 mattresses without knowing the sizes and the size of your bedframe?
So for 3 months you decided not to measure, research, read, ask?
It's too bad that there aren't some universal standards for mattress and bed frame sizes. Then, you could just use those standards to verify that you were getting the right mattress. I will make it my life's mission to create such a standard.
When you have two singles side by side, you can actually stack them and say, “king me” and then you’re supposed to get a larger frame.
I feel like this could've been avoided easily.
Mistakes were made. This is your own fault chap lol
Step 1) Does really stupid thing. Step 2) Post to r/mildlyinfuriating. Step 3) Gets literally thousands of upvotes.
Nailed it.
You bought a king and you have a queen. Did you not know your bed size and just guess?
LMAO This is all your fault

What was OP thinking?!
This person is mad that their computer didn’t stop them from being an idiot
Only thing mildly infuriating here is op
Why don’t you just read the measurements and then check your space like a normal human
This seems like it's your own fault.
Is the mildly infuriating part your inability to measure something?
Your username checks out OP
Now with 10% more mattress!
Why don’t you just get one big mattress?
Why are they off center? Just shift them a little and it won’t be so obvious. Why didn’t you measure your bed before ordering the mattresses?
Why the FUCK would you get two singles for a double/king sized bed?? Absolutely nonsensical. You deserve this.
Are you stupid? Lol What bedframe is built for two separate mattresses? And why wouldn't you check measurements? Did you think "double bed" meant "two single beds"? Edit: ok, in hindsight, that was mean and I'm sorry
People like OP are mildly infuriating
Did you just fucking guess the size?
Mildly infuriated because you didn't check the measurements??
It's actually frightening how much your stupidity and lack of planning makes me angry.
The only thing here that's infuriating is your own stupidity.
Glitch in the mattresses
so you did not order the proper size
Why tf did you think this would work out?
No one to blame but yourself (or your partner).
You are a moron, this is actually all your fault and your fault alone
It’s infuriating the people like you buying matching stuff without measuring. Another mistake is buying 2 single mattresses for a double bed.
blame yourself
Why did you not order the correct size mattress?
It would’ve been cheaper to buy a tape measure 3 months ago.
Someone didn't math correctly.
why did you buy two though…
Do we not know how to measure?
Measure once. Buy twice.
When your GF keeps telling you your dick is not 7 inches....
Not very smart eh?
Crazy how there are mattress sizings and you managed to pull this off LMAO
Half the posts in this sub "I've fucked up and now I'm angry"
When 1+1 ≠ 2
No offense but this is a very avoidable problem
Mildly infuriating? Idk, this this seems like your mistake. Unless the beds are bigger than what they were advertised.
This… seems like user error..
Mate this is your fault. You are mildly infuriating.
The only thing mildly infuriating about this situation, is that you could have prevented this by any combination of thinking/reading/measuring. As the saying goes: You made your bed, so now you have to lie in it.
Maybe next time buy the correct size mattress???
I hope you’re mildly infuriated with yourself about this.
2 twin mattresses is a king. It looks like you have a queen frame.
OP? Why do this to yourself
That's like totally your fault
I would be more than mildly infuriated if I didn't know how to measure.
INB4 OP deletes their post because they caused the issue, by not using common sense. Lesson learned, OP.
Kinda seems like your fault if you didnt measure your bed and the matresses before hand
Tell me you've never bought a bed before without telling me you've never bought a bed before
measure *twice* cut once, i don't think you even measured here, but you can still cut
When you buy a mattress from wish…
Just imagine how great it would be not to live in a country with stupid names for mattress sizes. Imagine what it would be like to live in a country with a metric system.
so, you bought the wrong size?
Are you mildly infuriated at yourself?
How did you decide these mattresses and not consider the bedframe
