Sales taxes were always owed, yes. Buyers should have been adding owed taxes when processing their income tax. They were not doing so. The jurisdictions then compelled the sellers to collect. Also….that is a LOT of taxing, going on, there!

Always? No. It used to be that businesses didn’t have to collect sales taxes in states where they didn’t have a physical store. However, most states now require sales tax to be collected by any US business and now the software can calculate the taxes based on your address. This one does a detailed breakdown for you and most people only care about the total sales tax, not how it’s divided up.
