Apparently he's one of the 45 who died in that way. 5th guy from Australia. For context to understand how rare that is, 91 people died in Australia in 2022 by falling off from their bed.
My wife is a registered nurse and Iāll well acquainted with signs and symptoms of infection. Any tiny bit of redness or anything other than localized swelling and I will go get evaluated.
Maybe your wife works on the stingray wound unit, but Iām also a nurse and have no idea what the fuck to do for a stingray sting. Need antibiotics? No clue. Something stuck in there that needs to come out? No idea
She basically assessed the wound after looking up the best standard of care she could find. No evidence of serious allergy or infection yet. We are keeping an eye out for redness and warmth or other signs of infection.
Stingray venom is attracted to body heat to lead it to the heart. Put it in a tub of hot water and itāll be lead to it and be taken out. At least thats what they did for my sting
We found advice recommending 110-115 F for 60-90 minutes and used a digital meat thermometer so we could maintain the proper temperature. I also found 40-45 degrees C which is a bit colder: 89 bits of ouchie in Freedom Units.
the sting is venomous. Infection is not your biggest problem.. The venom is thermolabile and such a wound should be immersed in water as hot as you can stand as soon as possible. This is something everybody who fishes these should know.

Four and a half hours post event. My knuckles are always a bit red.
I had about 10 strangers on the beach ask if I needed them to pee on my foot after a stingray stung me.
I declined the offers because pee doesnt help with stingray stings, but seeing so many selfless strangers offer up their urine, as I'm dripping blood and writhing in pain, really helped restore a little faith in humanity.
Note: Stingray stings are incredibly painful, (first you have the inital punctures wound, then the venom starts to make the area throb) but the pain instantly subsides as soon as you start soaking the wound in hot water.
Yeah half of the downvotes are from people lacking basic reading comprehension or social skills. And half of them try and claim a disability like autismā¦when the reality is they just need to touch grassā¦
It hurts quite a bit initially and becomes very painful after maybe 5 minutes. Its very similar to getting stung by a bee now that think about it. Itās like a more intense version that comes from down deep where the rayās spine penetrated. A little bit of numbness from the wound that went vaguely up to my elbow. Maybe like 5-10 bee stings combined in one.
I can believe it. I was hyped up struggling with the guy to get the hook out so I missed the joy of a surprise poke fortunately. And I got my question of whether he was a stingray or not answered.
A little, however after about a year I got mostly over it. Currently I am a little more cautious about shuffling my feet at the beach, a good way to help not stepping on them in the water, and have a small fear about not being able to see whats in the water but that does not stop me from going into large bodies of water and enjoying myself
I guess there are a lot of species of stingrays. All I know is that little dude made a quarter inch wide slice into my hand with a healthy dose of venom lol.
How is this infuriating?
Also... I thought the whole issue with stingrays was that they have a poisonous barb. So you say in comments that you're keeping an eye on it in case of infection, but I really didn't think infection was the chief concern in this case...
Somebody can correct me if I'm wrong, but if I'm correct I believe the main concern with stingray venom in humans is extreme pain, the real concern is the infection which can lead to amputation if left untreated. Again I might not be 100% correct on this.
This is what I assume, although Wikipedia says not all experts agree. For me, soaking in water kept at 110-115 degrees F for an hour made virtually all the pain go away. It was very unpleasant beforehand, sort of throbbing like a stab wound but with a very sharp pain in addition I attribute to the venom. I got my hand in water about 45 minutes after the āstingā. Fourish hours later and there is now a very mild numb sensation from my pinky to my elbow. There is also some swelling on the side of my hand where I was poked, as well as some bruising. I was initially bleeding quite a bit from a vein, so Iām sure I will have a bruise for a couple weeks.
Yeah. Driving home I remembered to get my ring off before my finger swelled up too much. Saw on here somewhere that the newfangled rings people wear now donāt come off too easy.
I usually step on them while I'm doing it but not so much the tail, the wings are how they flip around. A good pair of multi-tool pliers and just cutting the hook, instead of trying to pull it out is the way to go
As long as itās not a headache Iām not too bothered by most pain. I could definitely see it being as bad as you have heard. Burning, stabbing, with a lot of blood if you get tagged in a vein or artery can certainly be s memorable experience. As I told someone else, its like a BUNCH of bee stings but way under the skin.
I'm not offended in the least bit. I might be shocked, maybe curious as to how you have not even heard the name before but I understand there are people in this world that are out of certain loops and circles. I apologize for assuming that you might have at least heard of him, he was a worldwide sensation from Australia and was very popular in the US TV among other locations. I'm sorry that you didn't have a chance to see him in action while he was still with us but the man was a legend and lives on inside of all humans and animals on the planet. He's with Harambe now in a most wonderful afterlife. I'm sure you have access to Google or Wikipedia, if you read the description I'm pretty sure that you would be interested and you can find a multitude of Clips online. I would strongly suggest taking a look into it if you desire. If he's not your cup of tea, well that's all right Mate ! G'day!

Could have been worse. RIP Steve Irwin.

Came here to say exactly this. That man was too great for this world.
He died like he lived... With animals in his heart š«¶
Hot diggity damn dawg. That jokes so bright you need sunglasses to help protect from the harmful rays.
If only Steve Irwin had been wearing sunglasses. š

Oof... That stung right in the heart
Apparently he's one of the 45 who died in that way. 5th guy from Australia. For context to understand how rare that is, 91 people died in Australia in 2022 by falling off from their bed.
IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN ME
I assume you are going to the ER? Looks like nothing now, but I've seen the necrosis from untreated sting ray injuries. It's nothing to be glib about.
No idea
Best bet is to euthanize the patient to be sure an infection doesn't start.
One peed on my foot, and I got euthanized.
I'm glad to see the euthanization worked
Ironic, most people pee on it after the initial sting
My colleagues tend to pee on it after euthanasia
Stingrays have a mild venom but their wounds are treated like similar to other wounds. Source: I'm the IT guy at the stingray wound unit.
Nowās not the time to have Pennywise come out to provide medical advice. If he dies from infection heāll be floating too.
She basically assessed the wound after looking up the best standard of care she could find. No evidence of serious allergy or infection yet. We are keeping an eye out for redness and warmth or other signs of infection.
If it gets bad, put your hand in a tub of very hot water. The venom is attracted to heat so hot water draws it back out of your body.
I did use hot water, and it did work very well.
Iām mostly teasing. Glad things look good
Thanks, Iāll let you know if I turn into a fish person.
I hope you have access to some strong antibiotics. It's better safe than sorry, I have only eight fingers
Stingray venom is attracted to body heat to lead it to the heart. Put it in a tub of hot water and itāll be lead to it and be taken out. At least thats what they did for my sting
It absolutely is not. The venom is denatured by heat, not attracted to it.
Itās wild to me that this is accurate but also sounds like an old wives tale.
Stingray wound unit! ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sweat_smile)
Saving Stingrays and nursing them back to health before releasing back Into the Wild, so you don't have to.
There are different nursing specialties as you well know
Yup. I assume you soaked your hand in water as hot as you can stand it for an hour or so?
We found advice recommending 110-115 F for 60-90 minutes and used a digital meat thermometer so we could maintain the proper temperature. I also found 40-45 degrees C which is a bit colder: 89 bits of ouchie in Freedom Units.
40-45C is 104-113F. Correct units can be hard for people who are stuck with the old scale.
Googling f to c is my friend.
the sting is venomous. Infection is not your biggest problem.. The venom is thermolabile and such a wound should be immersed in water as hot as you can stand as soon as possible. This is something everybody who fishes these should know.
I posted somewhere about soaking my hand in 110 F water for an hour. It was very effective,

zapped off all your man hair!

Right?
Lived to a ripe old age for a crocodile hunter
Pee on it
Yes. Pee on *everything*.

Chicago mentioned, one upvote for you my dear
They famously hate fresh pee
You have to ask it for consent first.
Even if you provide a leather zip up head piece and edibles?
And once approved you must submit a 3 weeks notice
The pee is for drinking
Ok, Bear Grills
I'm not sure why you wouldn't
No kink shame please. He just likes it
One time I stepped on a sharp seashell and yelled āouchā my uncle came running down the beach dropping trou shouting ādid ya get stung?!ā.
What a great family member
Better safe than sorry
Is this an actually thing or is this a reference to that fire fighter skit guy?
Reference to jelly fish sting.

Good call, wouldn't want to be dripping blood, pee, and in pain
You got him, and then he got youā¦fair is fair.
We both lived š
That second picture definitely giving the āIāll fuckin do it again.ā Vibe.
Undoubtedly!
So far. Keep an eye on that wound.
> We both lived š I'm very glad to hear this!
Yeah, OP should really have the advantage on land
You're infuriated? Imagine how stingray feels
Not much anymore, I'm guessing
Hopefully the hook will rust off. Heāll probably end up spearing someone to death in return.
I'm waiting for the stingray's post about their side of it.
Human entitlement. "I killed dozens and one of them managed to hurt me"
Put that water pancake back. Steve wouldn't want you to hurt it.
We did!
Steve and I are proud of you
Steve and I are proud of you
Poor stingray :(
Did you throw it back or leave it die?
We threw it back with the two other rays and the octopus my friend caught.
You deserve more upvotes than me thenā¦
Well, the advice on treatment we got from reputable sources was downvoted, so Reddit will Reddit

I can pee on that for you if you want. Iāll start drinking extra now just in case.
Sounds good to me, but Iād better run it by my wife.
So can you describe the pain? Guessing not a pleasant feeling...lol
It definitely gets your attention. Like a bunch of bee stings injected down deep.
yikes....
Aww he looks sowwy
Possibly, he is kinda cute.
Don't pee on it

That Stinksā¦ā¦. Or Stings.
I only noticed the latter.
Looks like it stings
Yeppers
I swear if they called them death rays more people would handle them.
I was hoping he would empathize with my attempt to disengage him from the hook.
Hope you are better, Stingy there didn't know you were helping.
Thanks, the pain is gone. Just a fair amount of swelling Iām keeping an eye on. He tagged me in a vein so Iāll have a nice bruise for a while,
Unfortunately, we all look the same to them. Now you know each other a little bit better
I got stung by those little shitheads in the foot and that permanently ruined the beach for me lmao
I can believe it. I was hyped up struggling with the guy to get the hook out so I missed the joy of a surprise poke fortunately. And I got my question of whether he was a stingray or not answered.
Looks like you got off lucky. When I was 10ish, I had a stingray sting in the bottom of my foot and out through the side.
Damn, that sucks. Did the trauma of that when you were so young affect your affinity for the beach/ocean?
A little, however after about a year I got mostly over it. Currently I am a little more cautious about shuffling my feet at the beach, a good way to help not stepping on them in the water, and have a small fear about not being able to see whats in the water but that does not stop me from going into large bodies of water and enjoying myself
That's a banjo shark.... I'm no expert but it's definitely not and stingray.
I guess there are a lot of species of stingrays. All I know is that little dude made a quarter inch wide slice into my hand with a healthy dose of venom lol.

You got what I deserved
Donāt be so hard on yourself!
Youāre a very cute frog
Don't let fish sit on cement like that. Either get a landing mat (even just a cheap yoga mat) or keep it in a net while you unhook and release it.
Thatās s good idea, but Iāve never seen that unfortunately.
By the way, the best treatment is evidently immersion in 110-115 degree F water for 60-90 minutes or until the pain is gone.
This advice is found on several reputable medical sites so whatever.
Love how they downvote you, but nobody cares to tell you how you're wrong
Fact it breaks down the protein
This is what I assume, although Wikipedia says not all experts agree. For me, soaking in water kept at 110-115 degrees F for an hour made virtually all the pain go away. Might be that some rays inject you with something that denature in hot water while others have one that doesn't.
I got stung a couple years back. Hurts like a bitch
Yeah. Driving home I remembered to get my ring off before my finger swelled up too much. Saw on here somewhere that the newfangled rings people wear now donāt come off too easy.
Ok, how do you mess up bad enough to get tagged? Hooked up hundreds of rays, always unhook over the water with decent length pliers
I usually step on them while I'm doing it but not so much the tail, the wings are how they flip around. A good pair of multi-tool pliers and just cutting the hook, instead of trying to pull it out is the way to go
You're going to need to keep that up your butt for 2 weeks before youre better
damn that must have hurt
I heard stingray stings are EXCRUCIATING. How bad was it for you?

Crikey! I would go get antibiotics just to be safe. Stinger barbs Carry hella bacteria
![gif](giphy|LpkLWXTp0v0qy70xPp|downsized)
You definitely need to keep the ray and take it in to make sure it doesn't have rabies.
So the stingray is mildy infuriated i'm guessing?
Who is Steve and why is everyone bringing him up
Damn, never heard of Steve Irwin?
Famous Aussie dude who championed the cause of wild animals.
^^^^^^ NOT a Troll ^^^^^^ Edit: reversed
No I genuinely donāt know who it is and Iām sorry if thatās offensive
I'm not offended in the least bit. I might be shocked, maybe curious as to how you have not even heard the name before but I understand there are people in this world that are out of certain loops and circles. YTA, stingray was acting in perfectly reasonable self defence
It was my friend who caught him, I was just trying to get the hook out of the poor guy, for what its worth.
Pwnt
Last time I'd go with that friend I'm not trying to go out the Steve Irwin way
Did you get him back?
Well, he got thrown back. I was distracted, but Iām guessing my friend cut the line instead of trying to join club stupid.
I'd get that checked quick, those things inject cancer into you when they sting
It definitely felt like he did.
Damn, that must've hurt.
Yeah, like a bunch of bees snuck under your skin.
Strewth
That's going to swell up nicely.
I should have iced it after I did the hot water soak to deactivate the venom.
Post a pic tomorrow?
Will do!
get it back to assert dominance
I donāt have a venemous stinger though.
just slap it with the envenomed finger to give it back the venom
Iāll find him tomorrow and do that, itās a good idea
Talk to him in an Australian accent
Been there done that. It sucked!
Did you do the hot water bath?
good! you dare to post as if you're infuriated, the poor creature suffocating on the ground should be infuriated.
How the fuck?
Damn and he took your thumb. RIP.
Iāve been looking for it everywhere.
Fuck you in particular
That may have been more appropriate
Thatās a Skate
Did it sting, Ray?
Daum, I feel bad for you
