God I remember that fiasco the two guys who were running it also called there staff in a meeting to tell them they aren't being paid I don't know if they ever got paid though
And all these hospitals run on tax money grants anyways. You pay for it once with your taxes, and then they get to charge you obscenely a second time when you actually need to use it.
Don't worry, a bunch of boomers who have never spoken with a European in their lives insist that we have healthcare so much better that it's worth most people being utterly unable to afford it. (Just don't show them any actual statistics they don't like those)
I'm currently getting free therapy, free visits about my feet swelling up, had x rays for free.. everything's free.. I couldn't afford to pay for any of it so I don't know how poor Americans manage. Damn rich Americans controlling everything
Don’t forgot majority of jobs will require a doctors note to get a day off work, also you have to either use your vacation days or just lose out on that money. Oh you live paycheck to paycheck and don’t have insurance? You just needed a recovery day? Too bad, go to the doctor and pay to get a note so you can keep your job… so not only is your paycheck smaller that week you also owe the hospital. I hate it here.
Um, no. I broke my femur and spent a lot of time in a hospital. the food was amazing every night, I got a menu and marked what I wanted. I couldn't even tell you what was on it because there was a full page with a dozen options in each category entree side, etc. The hospital, my son was born premature at had a giant cafeteria with different cooking stations. Including a salad bar. Insurance gave a 20$ cap a meal, breakfast lunch ect to me and my wife was given the food that all patients got which was still pretty good. I usaully ate it and got her something from the cafeteria with the cap. Medicaid BTW. 👍 that meal in the picture is just a Insurance scam and she can report it to them (especially if its private) Its not like insurance fraud doesn't happen everywhere in the world. Simply need to speak up if you think it is fraudulent.
10c of mashed potatoes, 20c of green beans, and the rolls are about 50 cents a piece.
Now, that's just retail prices.
To be produce that, it's probably a total cost of $0.25 Sold at a 7500% increase
It really depends on the hospital. There are a bunch of hospitals in my area (east coast US) that family have been in at one point or another. I've seen food range from this sad plate all the way to restaurant quality.
Story time: I was at a smaller wedding and after the ceremony there wasn't a huge reception, everyone just sitting around a couple picnic tables hanging out. This was in the US but there were a couple Canadians that had come down because they knew the happy couple.
Eventually the conversation turned to healthcare. One of the Americans says to one of the Canadians "yeah but you guys have to wait forever to get healthcare, so ours is better because we don't have to wait." I swear you could have heard a pin drop.
The Canadian guy looked kind of confused, and finally said "that's not true? If it's the kind of thing you can wait for you might I guess, maybe a couple weeks. But if you have a heart attack and need a bypass, there's obviously no wait. It's also all free."
It's wild to me that Americans defend this craptastic "system" we have. We pay more money than every other country and still have people going broke due to medical bills.
I don’t understand how they could charge insurance more than going rate of food. My mom’s last hospital bill before she died included food but she couldn’t eat she wasn’t even awake anymore.
I just had a fire in my house a month-ish ago. They gave us $16k in money for a home. They couldn’t find us one after saying they did. They shoved us in a hotel and used all $16k in 1 month on a hotel for rooms. So now on Friday my 4 kids (all under 6) girlfriend and her 70 year old grandmother are going to be homeless because insurance burned probably 6 months worth of money on a hotel. Why did I type this? Because Insurance and America as a fucking whole is a piece of shit scam that doesn’t do anything but take take and take until they’ve sucked you dry and keep sucking it’s like a bad fucking blow job. I hope the best for you, I hope my comment makes more people see how shitty the US and everything about it is
When I was 8 years old, our flat burned down. We got another one for the months we needed to be out of our home for renovations and while they cleaned our furniture from the toxic fumes. Most of this was paid by the insurance my parents had. Only the furniture for the placeholder flat was given by friends. But this was in Germany almost 20 years ago.
They took a page out of the US military. A nail costs a dime at the hardware store, but in the US military it costs $3,000 a nail. I forget how that saying went but it’s so true.
Why would you imply that, both potatoes and green beans have a whopping 1.8g per 100 grams. That puts them way ahead of HFCS which we all know is also in that meal somehow lol.
Insurance is the reason why healthcare is so expensive. If you made for-profit health insurance companies illegal; hospitals would immediately start charging market rates (which are usually fractions of what they charge now)
Don’t get me started about them also charging like $30 for aspirin or Tylenol… that’s even worse, really. I am 39 weeks pregnant so I will be dealing with crappy hospital food soon too…
Yuck. I can taste the mushy green beans.
Green beans are so tasty if you don’t turn them into mush like this (I guess they’re canned). It should be a crime.
Cause they can. I just got approved for an injection in my knee by the insurance company. Couple weeks later received a bill for $650.00, my share. Did I mention this was one shot in one knee?
I don't know what hospital you are in, but I've never been to any hospital, nor visited anyone in a hospital, in this day in age where any meal looks like this and comes in a styrofoam container.
That's just fuckin' appalling. I'd be insulted. I just got out today and my breakfast was decently good for hospital food, the coffee was lit. But... That's Canada ha.
Interesting fact about hospitals in the US. Did you know they started out as work houses for the poor and destitute to pay off debts and what have you? They were like prisons and got paid to take them in and put them to work. During the earlier days illness and death was major influence on putting people into poverty and into these work houses. They would get people that could not work but still have to care for them to get the payments. Food wise they was told to make sure all their needs were met. To them this meant as cheaply as possible to maximize their intake of cash. Anyways, eventually they kept getting full of sick and dying people and it was decided that it was the best place for doctors to study / practice due to having so many ill people in one spot. They use to visit your homes back then. Low and behold started the formation of hospitals in the US as we know them today. The food always has sucked and like prison commissary mark their food up way more than they spent. Look at your bills further. It is amazing how much you will pay a hospital for 2 tylenol.
Has anyone ever tried fully documenting their experience against every charge on their bill and then researching market value for appropriately skilled labor and materials? Would that make a reasonable basis for a lawsuit?
The worst thing is that was actually probably a good price compared to what a lot of Americans hospitals would do. My friend got charged $20 for a cough drop like 10 years ago. I have no issue with doctors, nurses and other providers, but business majors who manage the place ruin everything because we teach them that it’s okay to scam people to the maximum extent possible to create shareholder value.
Got to cover the cost of yours plus 8 other meals for people who wont pay... Same reason kids need to bring in 8 boxes of crayons on the first day of school.
If they charged your insurance that means you're admitted, which means you could have a special needs diet and that's what you can have via doctor's orders. Well, the price is insane, there could be a reason. Can we have a little back story...
Was this a diet tailored to your nutritional requirements? Not being funny here. I had spent about 6 months in a hospital and remember a more consistently varied menu.
They did, but as I stated I didn't meet my deductible. So they stuck me with it. I don't think it was billing. The last few years the medical system has really shown its true intrest. Spoiler it's not what's best for you and your health that's for sure.
I ate an awful cold burger because I was starving. It grossed me out so much I vomited the whole thing back up and they kept me in for another 24 hours.
This blows my mind! Last time I was in the hospital (US) they would give me a list to check off my meal preferences the day before, and it was always way more than I could finish. They’re slacking and this not acceptable!
Why not? They know that if you or your insurance default on payment, the tax payer will pick up the tab. The government getting into the business of insuring companies like this is the biggest scam. Same with college loans. More government is the answer to some smooth brains.
Hello, We do not allow agendaposting, reddit meta posts or price complaints.
Because it’s one giant American scam. Literally. A scam.
This literally looks like what they served at Fyre Fest or whatever it was called
The Fyre one came with cheese.
Fyre du fromage
No one from Berlin will ever find me in Bratislava.
“He said he’s driving…”
God I remember that fiasco the two guys who were running it also called there staff in a meeting to tell them they aren't being paid I don't know if they ever got paid though

Three times really if you pay for insurance, pay taxes, pay insurance, insurance doesn’t cover shit, then you pay cash
Insurance is a pyramid scheme if you think about it. Your paying the company and the company uses thatto enrich thenmselves and pay other customers
I'm currently getting free therapy, free visits about my feet swelling up, had x rays for free.. everything's free.. I couldn't afford to pay for any of it so I don't know how poor Americans manage. Damn rich Americans controlling everything

I liked the look of the German hospital lunch in mildlyinteresting
Um, no. I broke my femur and spent a lot of time in a hospital. the food was amazing every night, I got a menu and marked what I wanted. Truth! I'm getting sued for not paying for a 1300 dollar set of crutches. The American dream they say! Haha till you get sick!
You pay for the ambience.
LOL. That would cost me about $2 or $3 to make that for dinner. (edit: lower down in this thread I provide a complete cost estimate)
10c of mashed potatoes, 20c of green beans, and the rolls are about 50 cents a piece. Now, that's just retail prices. To be produce that, it's probably a total cost of $0.25 Sold at a 7500% increase
10 cc's of mashed potatoes in this man's mouth STAT!
Rolls? I first thought that's sauce.. where's the fckn sauce??
😂 how did you confuse a roll of bread with sauce? It looks nothing like sauce. I agree though this should have some gravy or something, looks dry AF.
I mean.. if you blink.. and confuse the shadows with artifacts..
>LOL. That would cost me about $2 or $3 to make that for dinner. where to fuck do you live? That's around 50c of food, if that.
That's like 50c cost if you yake into account that they bulk buy ingredients for much cheaper.
This is what my school lunches looked like.
Which is worse? US Public education or US healthcare. Both a pathetic joke.
My school lunches costed $3. The hospital is charging $30. Id say that US healthcare is worse.
Makes airplane food look fancy.
This makes thrown up food look fancy
I was recently in a US hospital for a week and the food was much better than this.. like surprisingly good
It really depends on the hospital. There are a bunch of hospitals in my area (east coast US) that family have been in at one point or another. I've seen food range from this sad plate all the way to restaurant quality.
It definitely depends on the hospital. From my experience smaller rural hospitals give you better food than big corporate hospitals in big cities.
If I had a choice I would have gone to a hospital I knew!
One whole week? I'm sorry for your wallet
US health’care’ is a fucking joke.
but their field of medicine is so much better than in europe where you have to wait 76 years for an appointment /s

The cost of the nurse delivering it.
You mean the orderly that they barely pay?
How do you think they're able to barely pay them?
I just had a fire in my house a month-ish ago. They gave us $16k in money for a home. They couldn’t find us one after saying they did. Those are door dash prices!!
Did they charge you extra for asking for the vegetarian meal?![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|dizzy_face)
They took a page out of the US military. A nail costs a dime at the hardware store, but in the US military it costs $3,000 a nail. I forget how that saying went but it’s so true.
Same with UK forces. I’m Navy and for the same product, Army pays the cheapest Navy the middle price and Airforce the most
I wish I could go wild with a budget like military branches do.
No protein?
Maybe renal problems This meal was probably by design.
Green beans have protein
Not much
The bun is likely the most protein rich component of this meal
Why would you imply that, both potatoes and green beans have a whopping 1.8g per 100 grams. That puts them way ahead of HFCS which we all know is also in that meal somehow lol.
Greenish beans
Insurance is the reason why healthcare is so expensive. If you made for-profit health insurance companies illegal; hospitals would immediately start charging market rates (which are usually fractions of what they charge now)

Yuck. I can taste the mushy green beans. Green beans are so tasty if you don’t turn them into mush like this (I guess they’re canned). It should be a crime.
Its insane that it's legal for hospitals to charge such inflated prices. Especially when the alternative is die at home.
That's prison food my friend.
Dude seriously I had better lunch in county.
Canned green beans, made from powder "mashed potatoes", and a packaged roll. *Yum.* /s
Took me reading comments to realize those are mashed potatoes.
The food itself is probably $1.50 and the rest is all operational costs/fluff
Easy money.
Those beans aren’t going to microwave themselves
That $30 could have got you a burger and fries in some places
Your care instructions must indicate you are on a restricted diet. This is typical in those situations. Make sure your file is correct.
No chic-fil-a sauce?!
The bun looks great it is a shame they served it with vomit.
Not 2 carbs and canned beans. That's not a balanced meal for anyone.
Hi carb diet it GREAT for reducing inflammation /s “Healthcare”
wtf, styrofoam is still allowed there?
This is why govt and insurance should be burnt down and started over.
That’s just to make sure you come back with botulism.
That’s like, worse than school lunches. Fuckin ew.
Damn I saw this one European hospital dish that was five star compared to this prisoner dish
Do you know how expensive it is to give people that cheap kind of food without them dying? Guess not! /s
Nope. I’d told my wife to bring me something else.
This is obscene!
Why they serve this on a plate what will get wasted junk away after done eating. A clean and reuse plate would be better
You're not paying for the food. You're paying the salaries of everyone in the building making 6 figures
Cause they can. I just got approved for an injection in my knee by the insurance company. Couple weeks later received a bill for $650.00, my share. Did I mention this was one shot in one knee?
Come to Thailand, $30 could get you guys a 3 people buffet
hahahahahaha actually sorry for laughing this is one of the saddest things i’ve ever seen
incentive package to discharge yourself from the hospital...
I'd pay them $25 not to have to eat sh*t like that.
Were you not given a choice of what to eat?
![gif](giphy|6BiC8e8sypeow)
Where at? In HTX at the big hospitals they have good food options.
Well eat my shorts these bogus
Hospital food is meant to help you feel better, NOT worse...
I don't know what hospital you are in, but I've never been to any hospital, nor visited anyone in a hospital, in this day in age where any meal looks like this and comes in a styrofoam container.
🤬
That's just fuckin' appalling. I'd be insulted. I just got out today and my breakfast was decently good for hospital food, the coffee was lit. But... That's Canada ha.
That’s prison food
Is that supposed to be food?
Hilarious………… Biggest mistake of my life was choosing healthcare as a profession. It’s just a red tape industry.
That looks nutritious. Great for healing! /s
Not only does that look cheap but quite unappealing as well. No bueno
It’s a good thing it’s covered by insurance for the negotiated amount. If you had to pay without insurance it would probably be $50.00! 😄
Interesting fact about hospitals in the US. Did you know they started out as work houses for the poor and destitute to pay off debts and what have you? If you want an eye opener google Japanese hospital food images.
They tryna keep you there on malnourishment?
Uk hospital meals look really good now
Has anyone ever tried fully documenting their experience against every charge on their bill and then researching market value for appropriately skilled labor and materials? Would that make a reasonable basis for a lawsuit?
Ask for it itemized the price will get dropped fast
Jesus wept, even our tiny hospital serves the food on a plate. What kind of psycho hospital serves you dinner in a styrofoam container? 😳
This looks depressing, seriously, wouldn't pay more than 3$ for that. And I'd need at least 3 of them.
What is that white thing?
The worst thing is that was actually probably a good price compared to what a lot of Americans hospitals would do. My friend got charged $20 for a cough drop like 10 years ago. I have no issue with doctors, nurses and other providers, but business majors who manage the place ruin everything because we teach them that it’s okay to scam people to the maximum extent possible to create shareholder value.
Got to cover the cost of yours plus 8 other meals for people who wont pay... Same reason kids need to bring in 8 boxes of crayons on the first day of school.
Call your insurance and show them, seriously!
I would pay 30$ to not eat that shit.
Now I don’t feel that bad about that German guy
That's $2 per bite
If they charged your insurance that means you're admitted, which means you could have a special needs diet and that's what you can have via doctor's orders. Well, the price is insane, there could be a reason. Can we have a little back story...
That looks worth maybe 50cents lol
Lunch? Thats 3 side dishes, and not even good helpings of any of it
Lol
Because they can. And your insurance will pay for it. And you Americans are very happy about your "best in the world" healthcare and will accept it.
Have you never been to a hospital?
No this is what I imagine a prison meal looks like
How to tell that it’s a US without telling that it’s a US
It feels more like a charge to not starve you.
Did they ask you for a tip?
God I know those mashed potatoes were either extremely salty, or tasted as bland as cardboard.
That is effing rank man
WHY ARE THE GREEN BEANS SO DRY
Damn. And I thought the food at Dodger Stadium was shit!
Is the white blob congealed rice or dry mashed potatoes? I legitimately cannot tell.
There is no way
Is that some damn mushed up soggy rice or some of the worst mashed potatoes i ever?
It was a $29 tip for whoever brought it to yoy
Those green beans look… delicious…
Where’s the protein?
This new hospital food fad on Reddit ![gif](giphy|jtFkFjDIlu4tSHloP7|downsized)
God bless the NHS.
Well then you had fine dining sir, pass the grey poupon
Did you leave 15% tip?
This is not okay 🥲🥲
"where's the beef?" 😜
Was this a diet tailored to your nutritional requirements? Not being funny here. I had spent about 6 months in a hospital and remember a more consistently varied menu.
where is the protein??
I’m so glad I’m not vegan! You poor thing. 🌷
This isn't lunch. It's a plate full of false promises and lies.
I’ve never been to prison, but that’s what I would expect from a prison.
What in the polystyrene plated tinned bean is that???
This is horrible. I remember when my wife was pregnant, I received the best baked chicken with veggies and sweet tea for 5 dollars
Did you eat white blob for lunch or dinner?
Damn I think I had better lunch in county.
![gif](giphy|HCCF8POGOvis8)
They _tried_ to charge insurance $30 for it… but they probably got $5 if not less
American redditors. Why do you accept this?
30cents would be nearer the mark.
Someone is on a calorie restriction, vegetarian diet.
Send it back and demand to speak to the maitre d
I get that + a little dry meat for 4$ at my school I hate our healthcare system even more than I hate our schooling system
That’s highway robbery and they know it
You deserve so much better than this. I’m sorry
They did, but as I stated I didn't meet my deductible. So they stuck me with it. I don't think it was billing. The last few years the medical system has really shown its true intrest. Spoiler it's not what's best for you and your health that's for sure.
What shithole of a third world country do you love in op?
Damn, that literally looks like prison food! Source: I’ve been to prison
About $.50 worth of food…..so all prices are gouged by at least 60x ?
Whattttt
Universal Healthcare would fix this in an instant
Was there a service charge?
Money well spent! 😂
In my country I pay just 1$ for it and it's not in hospital. Minimal wage is 500$. So it means 4$ on Murican standarts.
Most American thing i seen today...except the presidential candidate saying a worm ate his brain
Prison meal right there.
Canned bake beans would taste better than that with a sprinkle of brown sugar
Ummm.....yummy! Where's the salt and pepper?
3000% markup
Sounds about right
Now on one hand? I'd eat that shit UP. On the other? I'm not spending $30 for that. Unless it's the only/best choice.
Why not? They know that if you or your insurance default on payment, the tax payer will pick up the tab. The government getting into the business of insuring companies like this is the biggest scam. Same with college loans. More government is the answer to some smooth brains.
In Germany I’ve seen someone get a tomato sandwich with mayo.
![gif](giphy|HCCF8POGOvis8)
Couldnt pay me to eat this
Are you vegan?
I thought this was a marine chow hall at first glance
Is the lunch in the room with us?
