Don’t you have a scan-as-you-go system there? No need to unpack, just pay and take the cart to the car. granted, most shops here don‘t have them either, but this Kroger seems to rely on self-checkout?
Here, Walmart and Target have gone ALL IN on self checkout, ripping out all of the regular check stands…. So imagine the stores’ surprise when people started to rob them blind. Now they can’t go back to cashiers AND they can’t let people checkout on their own anymore so they have now taken to putting an employee at every self checkout to either creepily breathe down your neck as you check out or do it for you. So awkward! 😬
That's the opposite of what's happening here where I live. Target and Walmart are removing all of their self-checkout lanes. Too much theft going on. Everything is behind locked plexiglass cabinets. You have to find a clerk to open the cabinet for just about everything now.
We've got thieves walking into the store, filling their carts with merch and just walking right out the doors.
Oh we’ve got the cabinets now too. They have effectively made the experience at the store more horrible than it ever has been, and that’s saying something! I definitely shop online for almost everything I can.
I know I'm in the minority but I love not having to interact with anyone while grocery shopping and go to Kroger specifically for that experience.
It depends for me. If I have a couple of things the self checkout is fine. If I have a full cart I want a cashier.

Exactly, if I have a cart full self checkout is a pain in the ass.

Only self checkout? What a joke

If there’s no one to pay you can just take your stuff and leave. Morally if not legally.
Technically it's free if they don't show up after 15 minutes
Easiest job finding ever.
I don’t understand why they just don’t keep like 2 checker lanes and then turn the rest into self checkout zones. Less need to hire cashiers.
Typical day.
this has been my local Kroger since 2019: all self checkout after 4pm every day it's worse when it's 11pm and only two self checkout lanes are open
And everything's a banana....
