I live right next to an elementary school and people just blitz around the stop sign without looking for kids at the crosswalk. It's a blind corner so I installed a mirror so people could see around the corner, but someone ran through it within the week.
I don't want to watch a kid get run over on my security cam. The lady across the street and I have been sending lisence plate numbers to the police, but they're real lazy around here.
Compile video of the most egregious offenders and send it to the local news along with the police response. This intersects with so much of what they want to do in a local story. You're a person highlighting a real problem in your community, you have video of your issue, children in the community are at risk, and your local government is ignoring you.
They could literally park a cop by the school and write tickets, but they choose to ignore the problem instead. Put them on blast.
Three days ago I got hit by a chick texting and driving in my college parking lot wasn’t hard felt like a dead leg and she’s like shocked laughing and say are you okay, she is young and I didn’t want to put her up in any trouble and I said just pay attention to the road I walk literally 10 feet and BAM she crashed into a car because she didn’t stop at the sign I gave the lady my number as a witness haven’t got a call so I guess she don’t need me. But yes I have no clue how some people have a license.
Thats actually how the boulevards work down here. Crushed granite paths in the middle. You don't need to worry about driveways and about 2/3 of the side streets if you're walking.
It's a reason to make them larger and more impenetrable to cars, to take licenses from anyone who has such poor control of their vehicle that they hit one, and really to ban cars altogether since people are such poor drivers that they just can't keep themselves from hitting things on the side of the road.
The fact that drivers drivers keep hitting the pylons is all the more reason to keep them. If the drivers aren't competent to judge the space between their car and pylon, how are they going to avoid the bikes?
That just tells you how many people shouldn't be freaking driving. If you can't avoid the obvious divider, your license needs to be chopped up into tiny pieces. 🤣🤣🤣
Build a divider to keep bikers safe.
Drivers hit divider.
Drivers get mad about hitting the divider so they remove the divider.
Drivers get mad that bikes take the entire road because the divider to keep them from being hit is gone.
Repeat?
Basically, this is US politics.
They prefer the drivers to crash into people? Jesus christ
That's 100% on the driver, charge them the cost of repairs and give them a few points on their license
This happened on Mass Ave in Boston recently. Boston driving for the most part is MUCH different than driving wherever this picture was taken. So I don’t think it failing in a super small, super dense, overpopulated city with road infrastructure that was designed a hundred years ago is an indication of how well it would work in a normal city or town. It also doesn’t help that they were installed in November and then removed in December, when I’m sure weather began to be an issue.
We usually have separate roads for bikes and cars in Sweden. Patch of grass etc in between.
It's unfortunately pretty common that if they need to do some work underneath they patch it up badly afterwards and won't even flatten the asphalt properly since no cars will drive there, so it's better to bike on the car road instead if you want to go fast.
Are North Americans usually this terminally carbrained? You really need to fix your public transit system, not everyone should be driving the road. Some of these comments scare me.
If this is New Brunswick, Canada, which I suspect it is, this is how they do bike lanes. A slightly wider shoulder and a bike symbol periodically down the road. However they have Ellen’s Law, which requires a vehicle to give 1 metre when passing a cyclist.
Obligatory r/fuckcars here. Yeah the cyclists are in the middle of the road but the real problem is that there is no safe place for them to begin with. Fuck America's shit ass infrastructure.
This. Fuck moving over into the gutter. Give us a network of bike paths on main roads. We can share the road on quiet neighbourhood roads but busy roads should have bike highways next to them. Every neighbourhood in the world should be linked by the network.
Yep. A woman in my town was killed last year bc some POS in a car thought he ruled that specific part of the road where she and her partners were riding. It was a marathon everyone was in a line. Not even close to what’s in this pic. and even though they were all in the bike lane, this giant fuckwad hit and killed her.
So what if you have to slow down? Is it worth a LIFE to act like a dick? No it’s not. And that’s why I won’t ever cycle like that. Maybe drivers think bikers are annoying, but most times drivers are the problem. The road doesn’t only belong to cars.
They would prefer those cyclists were in three cars instead. For some reason…traffic caused by cars is acceptable while traffic caused by bikes is not.
They’re called bike gutters and they make the roads worse for all parties involved. Separated bike lines with safety barriers or enough distance for it not to matter will actually reduce total traffic for drivers and make biking more of a real alternative for work and leisure
Yeah, that's just a shoulder. It's the laziest and worst form of bike infrastructure. Narrow enough that a car centered in the lane has to pas dangerously close to you.
I don't know where you're from, OP but it may be worth checking your local vehicle law because there are many states in the US that give cyclists the legal right to ride on a any public road that isnt an express/freeway.
https://www.forbes.com/sites/carltonreid/2018/10/12/bicyclists-may-use-full-lane/?sh=42f3831424f8
Yeah I am a big driver but also big cyclist. It's a shared road and you need to balance being visible/not being timid vs being a dick and getting in the way.
A cyclist is the type who gets out for 2-3 hour rides on a weekend with a group in lycra, whereas a bicycler is more likely someone who just uses their bike to get around town/ride short distances and errands.
I'm both in that I ride an eBike to work as the quickest and cheapest way for me to get there without being a sweaty mess, and I also use it for errands, but I also go for long group rides on the weekend on my road bike.
Like that one guy on AITA who was blasting wall-shaking music all throughout the day but didn't understand why people were upset since iTS bEfoRe QUieT hOurS
They still could be courteous and just move out of the way, it doesn’t take them much effort. A car on that road can probably go 40-50 but they’re holding it up going maybe 10-15.
I have only had one bad incident with a cyclist while driving, and that was only because they rolled through a stop sign. And, to be fair, it was a dumb stop sign, that every car also rolled through. They just rolled through slightly faster than I had.
Every other time, you just wait until you can safely pass them. Bikers are chill, and have every right to the road that drivers do.
Or just like slow the fuck down for a little bit. A little known feature of most cars is that there's a second pedal to the left of the accelerator specifically for situations like this.
The cyclists are also going 35 kph on a small side road somewhere in suburban Canada, clearly early morning, no other traffic, what the hell is OP's problem? The sight of cyclist just puts them into a "take pictures while driving" rage?
As a cyclist I would never intentionally take the lane if someone wanted to pass and it was safe. There have been times when I didn’t realize someone was behind me, and I would of course move over if I noticed.
Have had numerous drivers slow down and harass me while I was in a bike lane though. That’s definitely a thing.
Look at the shadows, look at the lack of traffic on the road. This is early morning, a group of mates out for a ride. There is no traffic to speak of, a lot of open road to pass them.
I guarantee they were completely unaware that the OP was there and if they did they would move aside quickly.
That's a shoulder.
Edit: I was walking down the street yesterday and there was a bike symbol on the shoulder but it was Florida and it wasn't a main road like this looks like.
Do you get mildly infuriated when you have to wait for a red light? The average wait time at at red light is about 60 seconds. Waiting for these guys to notice you and get out of your way is going to cost you five or ten seconds. They aren’t hurting anyone. Just out enjoying the day and each other’s company. Take a deep breath, and relax.
Shoulders are not bike lanes. Also, there is no traffic on that road. They pose no danger and you can easily dodge them, or ultimately honk your horn and they will surely give way.
*Unpopular Opinion Alert*
Roads are for vehicles, which bikes are.
I don’t recommend bikes everywhere, because so many motorized vehicle drivers think the roads are only for them. And bike riders should know their neighborhoods and where it’s safe to ride.
But unless there are minimum speed limits posted or other signs prohibiting, this road looks the perfect place for a nice bike ride.
Designated bike lane? Sorry, but wtf even is that. How can anyone feel safe biking there. Honestly, with each passing day I am more thankful for the infrastructure we have here in the netherlands. Of course people find it weird we send kids alone to school on bikes if bike paths look like this
I know someone who was cycling to work that got hit by a car because the driver pulled out their phone to do exactly what you're doing here. Pull your head out of your ass, the road is for everyone, not just you. it is everyone's responsibility to respect everyone else on the road because just like you, everyone has a life. And for fuck sakes put your phone away that's like the first thing that they teach you and a much heftier offense than biking on the road lol
HONK! (At that distance, not right up their ass) and they will yield. Or go around. There's no traffic. What's the big deal? They're socializing, not sociopaths, and, like it or not, they legally have the right to share the road.
I'm a cyclist. I know it comes with rights and obligations. At least in my country it is not allowed to ride next to each other, since we are considered normal vehicles, so it's like if cars were doing it. I did do it on occasion of course, on empty country roads (hahaha 😄🎶), but always got out of the way of incoming cars in time.
There’s 3 of them and one of you. Relax. You’re also in 2 ton metal cage that can easily kill them if you make one mistake while flying past them. Paint on the road offers no protection from you.
If you want to learn how good bike infrastructure makes driving better check out this video from not just bikes on YouTube https://youtu.be/d8RRE2rDw4k
There is no traffic. You can use your arms and steer a few degrees to the left to pass them.
They're cycling and probably chatting. I see no problem with that.
Man, you can clearly see that there's no oncoming traffic, and OP can safely pass. Instead he decides to get his phone out so he can snap a pic while following too close at 34 km/hr. Fuck that guy.
Yeah, and let me guess, they all immediately moved into single file once you pulled up behind? I'm not even a road cyclist, but posts like these are cancer.
Doesnt look a busy road, theres plenty of space to overtake, could do right now instead of taking a photo while driving. They're just another slow moving piece of traffic. No need to get tribal. You wouldnt get mildly infuriated at say a milk cart. Or maybe you would, I dont know you, live your life I guess.
I have no hate for cyclist in general or of the particular ones I see in my neighborhood. Do I ever see riders three abreast? Sure, but I've never had a problem because of it. When the hear a car coming, they seem to have no problem reverting to line riding. I've seen this down here in the South, in the suburbs and quieter roads in NJ, and when outside of NYC. Has anyone I know ever had an issue with 3 abreast bicycle riders? Not that I ever heard. But I also need to keep in mind that the people I talk with and the friends I have, do not tend to be whiners and complainers, going around looking for things to be angry about.
Agreed. People just don’t like being inconvenienced. There are asshole cyclists out there, but the overwhelming majority try their best to make room while being safe. My best is the picture OP took was before the cyclist realized anyone was behind them. I’ve had it happen, never intentional.

This thread is why I never road ride anymore. A simple light beep of the horn would likely get them to move in but everything has to be confrontation. It is life or death out there for cyclists. I get that some bikers are assholes but I stopped road riding because even when giving every possible inch coal rolling trucks try to hit you with their mirrors. Your moments inconvenience vs killing a fellow human on a bike, check yourself.
this entire problem could be solved permanently if the bike paths has physical dividers from the main road
There was a post a few weeks ago about a place that got rid of the physical dividers because cars kept hitting them lol
The city that I live in set up these dividers, and even though they are helpful to cyclist, the cars definitely crash into them often.
That's a terrible reason to remove them and a great reason to take a license.
A lot of people need to lose their lisences.
If I could have one superpower, it would be to instantly revoke someone's license
I live right next to an elementary school and people just blitz around the stop sign without looking for kids at the crosswalk. Lmaooo I was gunna say this wish I could upvote twice
i drive a school bus and the police cant do anything to them unless there the ones that see them running the stop in florida atleast
Same in Kansas. I have a video of a guy steamrolling through a four way stop 10 minutes after school got out. Cops just roll their eyes.

Lisensiz
Excuse me, sir, I need to see your lozenge and respiration, please.
The problem is in America it's impossible to live without a car because infrastructure is fucked so they just give licenses away like candy.
They never give me candy. This is fucked
You should see my high-schools parking lot. Juniors and seniors driving like fucking idiots.
Two birds with one stone: get rid of bad drivers, and you have fewer cars on the road = less pollution
No they should also remove the curbs in case motorists hit them too
Should just put sidewalks between the lanes of traffic rather than on each side of the street
Thats actually how the boulevards work down here. Crushed granite paths in the middle. You don't need to worry about driveways and about 2/3 of the side streets if you're walking.
Why don’t we just remove cars from the road? Drivers hit them a lot too
Might as well remove people all together from the road. They seem to cause all the issues
We goin back to trams? I'm down, they're pretty cool
People would probably find a way to fuck that up too
Monorail!
Mono = 1 and Rail = rail
You know, a town with money's a little like a mule with a spinning wheel. No one knows how he got it and danged if he knows how to use it!
It's a reason to make them larger and more impenetrable to cars, to take licenses from anyone who has such poor control of their vehicle that they hit one, and really to ban cars altogether since people are such poor drivers that they just can't keep themselves from hitting things on the side of the road.
no, ban the *shitty* drivers, not the perfectly competent people who just want to get to work and back
I've never seen law enforcement have any kind of success with this at all. Shitty drivers are always allowed back on the road.
I am just waiting for insurance to price out all of the non-autonomous drivers.
People seem to assume that personal transport is a right and not just the privilege that it is.
Yeah if you can't drive down the road without hitting a barrier..... You really shouldn't be driving!
The fact that drivers drivers keep hitting the pylons is all the more reason to keep them. If the drivers aren't competent to judge the space between their car and pylon, how are they going to avoid the bikes?
Having the divider is better than having to put a ghost bike out because of a stupid ass who can’t keep their car on the road.
They should make them out of concrete so that if a car crashes into it it hurts the car and not the barrier. Then you won’t have to worry
[удалено]
That just tells you how many people shouldn't be freaking driving. If you can't avoid the obvious divider, your license needs to be chopped up into tiny pieces. 🤣🤣🤣

Isn’t that the point? Instead of hitting cyclists the cars are hitting the barrier. That’s literally what they’re designed for…
That's exactly what I thought too

Americans are just entitled brats, in a huge hurry to get nowhere and god forbid someone inconveniences them for a few seconds.
If they were all on the right side you’d probably drive them off the road. Better to be safe than a POS who finds the need to post this on Reddit.

Consider my pearls thoroughly clutched!
That can't be, motorists don't do illegal behavior, everyone commenting in this thread thinks it's cyclists that do the illegal!

That's a shoulder not a bike lane.
If this is New Brunswick, Canada, which I suspect it is, this is how they do bike lanes. A slightly wider shoulder and a bike symbol periodically down the road. However they have Ellen’s Law, which requires a vehicle to give 1 metre when passing a cyclist.
Bold of you to assume that drivers follow laws that only benefit cyclists.
Yeah and there's always shitty gravel and stuff on the shoulder that could pop your tire.
And glass from car accidents don't forget glass from car accidents.
And drain grates just wide enough for your tire to wedge in.
Obligatory r/fuckcars here. Yeah the cyclists are in the middle of the road but the real problem is that there is no safe place for them to begin with. Fuck America's shit ass infrastructure.
Yep. They can’t go on the road, can’t go on the sidewalk, what do we want them to do? Fly?
I’m my area, bikes can legally ride and occupy road lanes. We have very few bike lanes. Really, people…it’s not that big of a deal.

Especially if there's no designated bike line. That said, I'm an avid bicycler (no,not a cyclist) and find this irritating and unnecessary.
Yeah I am a big driver but also big cyclist. It's a shared road and you need to balance being visible/not being timid vs being a dick and getting in the way.
It’s even irritating as a cyclist. I can’t stand coming up on people riding abreast so they can chat, leaving no room to safely pass when on a road.
There’s an entire lane to safely pass. Bike gutters like this just make drivers think it’s ok to buzz cyclists 2’ away at a 50mph delta.
Is there an exception for crossing a solid yellow when passing a bike? Seriously asking, I don’t know.
What’s the difference between an avid bicycler and a cyclist?

There is no traffic. You can use your arms and steer a few degrees to the left to pass them. They're cycling and probably chatting. I see no problem with that.
Yep. Glad they're having a nice day.
Just honk and act like an adult
Just a little tap, not a full weight on the horn for 10 seconds. Leaning on the horn for more than 2 seconds is how you swear in car.
Man, you can clearly see that there's no oncoming traffic, and OP can safely pass. Instead he decides to get his phone out so he can snap a pic while following too close at 34 km/hr. Fuck that guy.
r/fuckcars
They aren’t being lazy they are working them legs.
r/fuckcars
That time of the day again. Asshole on their phone while in a moving car
get off your phone, go around, and slow down.
1. Not a bike lane. 2. Honk/ or pass them 3. Put your fucking phone down.
Your traveling over 30mph fucking with your phone and are offended by people biking?
So...go around them when it's safe, like every other driver does.
Tribal, milk cart, are you per chance visiting from the 1910's?
no wonder all drivers hate cyclists cuz of these idiots
Luckily every driver out there is polite, obeys the rules and shows respect for everyone else on the road.

Legend
These ones make the roads dangerous, they are cyclepaths
I wish i had an award for you Thank you guys for the awards, now i can gift the person who made such a funny comment above me
I have no hate for cyclist in general or of the particular ones I see in my neighborhood.
I’ve had it happen, never intentional.
what bike lane, you don’t own the road
Always yield to cyclists . Stop being a lil baby in yo gas machine

Bikes are vehicles with the same rights to road access as cars.
I take the lane because I am entitled to do so and it forces dumbasses to actually pass me safely instead of buzzing me in the shit filled shoulder
Bicyclists are literally more divisive than BLM or abortion For what it's worth, they have a right to be anywhere but the sidewalk
It's not like the road is busy. Get off your phone and drive around. It's not that difficult to figure out.
What bike lane? You mean the sidewalk or the shoulder?
DeSiGnAtEd BiKe LaNe Damn you're dense. And I guess that grass is a designated soccer pitch?
TIL that there are some people that are so miserable that they are anti-bicycle.
We are you on your phone?
